This is part of a promotion, which kicks off today, for the LA Times’ Taste event which features happy hours around town. Rachel Palley Warehouse Sale
It’s almost autumn. You know what that means: Sales off spring and summer fashion! Fortunately, LA weather is so temperate that we can usually wear those seasons’ styles way into October. At Rachel Pally’s warehouse sale, you can save 55%-85% on her Spring and Summer Collections in women’s dresses, tops and bottoms. Cash and credit cards only.

  • August 19-21, Friday-Saturday 10am-6pm, Sunday 11am-4pm. 2301 E. 7th Street, Suite C100, Los Angeles (map).

Sunday, August 21

Bacon Brunch at Royal/T Cafe
Bacon is definitely a foodie buzz word so no doubt they’ll flock to this bacon-focused brunch which will feature bacon and Nutella panini and a special Bacon High Tea. While you’re indulging in everyone’s favorite meat product, check out the bacon-inspired jewelry in OnchMovement’s Meat-cessories line in the OnchMovement’s “Perfectasy” pop-up shop, which is around through August 31. Wonder if that bacon bracelet smells as good as it looks. There will also be drink specials: $12 bottomless mimosas and $28 bottles of Veuve du Vernay Champagne to quench your bacon-induced thirst.

  • 10am-1pm. Royal/T Cafe, 8910 Washington Boulevard, Culver City (map).

Gourmet Music Carnival
I know, “Another food truck fest?” you’re probably saying. But this inaugural event is a cross between a food truck fest, flea market and concert series. That’s right, indulge in 40-60 food trucks, browse 200 local vendors and rock out to 9 bands. Currently there’s a Thrillist Rewards special where, for $36, you get an open vodka and moonshine bar tended by Joel Black (formerly of Cana), VIP tent for the concerts and food from 25 food trucks.

  • 11am-7pm. $12-$50. LA Historic Park, 1245 N Spring Street, Los Angeles (map).

Bay Cities and Italian Wine With Silverlake Wine
West meets East as the beloved Santa Monica deli treks to Silverlake for a very special wine tasting. Enjoy wines like Caravaglio Salina Vino Da Tavola Bianco 2010, Macarico Macari Aglianico Del Vulture 2007 and Germano Angelo Nebbiolo Langhe 2007…yeah, I’m not sure what these are either but you know they probably go well with the meatballs, charcuterie and, yes, godmothers that the deli will be bringing.

  • 3pm. $20. Silverlake Wine, 2395 Glendale Boulevard, Los Angeles (map). Reservations required: (323) 662-9024.

Mm, the best way to get those carbs! For $30 you get three types of mac & cheese — sundried tomato & asiago, pesto with parmesan, and farmhouse cheddar and smoked gouda — paired with craft brews like Affligem Blonde and Shipyard Bluefin Stout. Enjoy a sneak peek screaming, I mean screening har, har, of the Dreamworks’ remake for ’80s horror movie, Fright Night, in the shadow of the creepy, old Linda Vista Hospital, the center of many paranormal investigations. There will also be a Fright Night food truck, whatever that means, as well as giveaways and a Best Dressed Vampire contest. Bring your own lawn chairs and ice chests. Even though this new movie, which actually debuts August 19, stars Colin Farrell, looks like it could be a fun one.

Sunday, August 14

Tequila with Dan Dunn at Lexington Social House
If you count yourself a boozer, doing tequila shots with Dan “The Imbiber” Dunn should be on your drinking bucket list, right up there with talking cocktail history over punch with David Wondrich and drinking a Bloody Mary in Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. This Sunday, Dan will be take you on a wild ride through 10 tequilas like Casa Noble Crystal, Tequila Ocho Reposado, and Chinaco Negro Extra Anejo to name a few. This Weekend: New Hollywood Gastropub, Bastille Day Parties, Fun Run/Food Fest

You’re not going to let a little Carmaggedon interfere with your weekend plans, are ya? Especially when there’s a bunch of food festivals like LA Food Fest (which I’m giving away tickets to) going on! Plus all this other fun stuff.

Thursday, July 14

Paella and Spanish Wine Tasting at 55 Degree
If you’re all Frenched out from Bastille Day activities today, 55 Degrees in Atwater Village has got a Spanish solution: paella from chef Adriana Morera of the Paella Project and Spanish wines like Tempranillos and Malbecs. The tasting will feature the country’s beloved dish with mussels, clams, chicken and chorizo, or there’s a veg option. Cost is $5 to $13.

  • 6-10pm. 55 Degree, 3111 Glendale Boulevard, Atwater Village (map). (323) 662-5556

Bastille Day With Cointreau at Spare Room
The Spare Room really knows how to throw a shindig (I was just there last night for tiki night and had a hoot). So it’s no shocker that they’ll be doing up Bastille Day in style with Adele Jacques of ParisLovesLA performing Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot songs. Francophiles will tipple on specialty cocktails created by bartender Naomi Schimek. There’s the cognac, lavender, lemon cocktail Duke for a Day or do it up chic with the Champagne Flip (champs, cognac, Cointreau, egg yolk, cream and sugar).

  • 8pm. The Spare Room at Hollywood Roosevelt, 7000 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood (map). (323) 466-7000.

Bastille Day at The Bar at Cliff’s Edge
The Silver Lake bar is taking Bastille celebrations to another level inviting guests to show up in French costumes (I’m thinking Marie Antoinette or maybe a la hep cat Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face) for a chance to win a prize. The party will naturally have free cake as well as free rose wine and swinging French music! Vive la France!

  • 8pm-12am. The Bar at Cliff’s Edge, 3626 Sunset Boulevard, Silver Lake (map).

Friday, July 15

District 13 Gastropub Opens in Hollywood
That’s right, slotted in the strip mall between Big Wang’s and Stout in the old Soi 56 spot is a new brewpub with food by  Executive Chef Aoi Ratanamanee (Rambutan). The brew food — sausages, burgers, fish and chips — is meant to complement the quality beer the restaurant will be serving up like The Bruery Rugbrod and DogFish Head Palo Santo Marron. There’s even a Danger Dog! Yummy on all counts!

  • Opens 11:30am. 1556 North Cahuenga Boulevard, Hollywood (map). (323) 957-1313.

Saturday, July 16

Munchathon: 5K Fun Run/Food Truck Festival in Orange County
If you want to just get out of Dodge altogether, hit up this fun food festival in the OC where you can nullify any weight gained from good food truck eats by running an obstacle course (with food and drink stops for obstacles) at the same time. It’s so crazy it might just work. OK, maybe not but still sounds fun. There will be over 50 food trucks, like Ahn Joo, Lobsta Truck and Ludo Bites Truck, plus a rec area where you can play ring toss, basketball or Frisbee.

  • 9am-5pm. Oak Canyon Park, 5305 Santiago Canyon Road, Silverado (map).

Eat Real Festival
This food festival doesn’t just feed you, it teaches you everything about our favorite subject, from where food comes from to how it’s made. Learn how to make your own tomato sauce from KCRW Good Food’s Evan Kleiman, watch a panel on “The Future of Food Writing” featuring LA Times‘ Russ Parsons and LA Weekly Squid Ink’s Amy Scattergood. Nosh on food from Nom Nom and Flying Pig food trucks and browse the marketplace with goods by Creme Caramel LA and butchers Lindy & Grundy. The festival is free to attend, you just pay for your own Marketplace goods and food purchases.

  • Saturday 10:30am-9pm, Sunday 10:30am-5pm. 8800 Venice Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

This is a party that no fashionista on a budget will want to miss. We’re talking mini makeovers by Stila, an OPI manicure bar and blowouts by Fred Segal Salon, including styling tips from Fred Segal Originals and Citizens of Humanity. After getting dolled up, indulge in desserts and cocktails while trying your luck at winning a $500 gift certificate for Fred Segal Santa Monica. Right now via Daily Candy you can get a $100 Fred Segal gift card and gift bag worth $150 for only $75 if you hit the above link.

  • 5-9pm. Fred Segal Santa Monica, 420 and 500 Broadway, Santa Monica (map).

Enjoy $5 pints of handcrafted Angel City Brewing beer while pondering the various street art works of 25 internationally known artists, some of whom are included in MOCA’s current Art in the Streets show. The exhibit itself will run through July 10.

Unlimited Wine Tasting Singles Mixer at Wine Expo
Sounds like the perfect situation for some spectacularly bad pickup lines! At this singles event, for $44 you have 10 wines to pick from and can taste as many as you like. Could be fun for both spectator and participant. Attendees are encouraged to be 22-45-year-old professionals and asked to dress for the event as they “would on a first date.” So grab your wingmen and mingle. But word of caution, if you want to make a good impression, don’t abuse the liquid courage.

  • 7:30-10:30pm. $44. Wine Expo, 2933 Santa Monica Boulevard, Santa Monica (map).

Monday, May 2

Discounted Austria Uncorked Admission From Silverlake Wine
The regular price for this Austrian wine expo is $75 but Silverlake Wine customers get $30 off by going here and entering “slw” for the discount code. If you want VIP treatment, that’ll be $100 for early entry and a special take-home wine package.

  • 5:30-9pm. SLS Hotel, 465 S La Cienega Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

Double Feature at the Aero: The Princess Bride/The Notebook
Now, I usually prefer slasher movies for Valentine’s Day but these are two of my favorite lovey-dovey ones. Both revolve around twoo wuuuve. And The Princess Bride has romance, adventure, comedy, a sword fight and The Notebook has, well, Ryan Gosling. Swoon! You’ll laugh and you’ll cry. The Notebook gets me every time I see it. Every. Time.

  • 7:30pm. Tickets: $11. Aero Theatre, 1328 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica (map).

Charity Wine Tasting for Mutts and Meows
Drink wine for a great cause: Molly’s Mutts and Meows which goes toward helping cats and dogs find homes. Sunday, February 13

33rd Annual LA Chinatown Firecracker 5K/10K
This is called a fun run but it’s also an ass-kicker with its 1-mile uphill. Oy. Last year when I was in great shape I did the 10K, this year I’ll be happy if I can do that 5K. If anything, all 5K/10K finishers get a medal! Plus the entry fee includes a carbo load meal the night before. Online registration is closed but you can still register at the race.

  • 6am registration. $37. Broadway and College Street, Chinatown (map).

Monday, February 14

Hophead Heaven Kickoff at Library Alehouse
You’re bitter about Valentine’s Day, embrace that bitterness at this Hophead Heaven hop-centric fest which features AleSmith’s My Bloody Valentine, a hoppy seasonal red, as well as Green Flash’s West Coast IPA, Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA and Sierra Nevada Hoptimum to name a few. $10 gets you the Alehouse logo tasting glass, $2 for 3.5-ounce pour.

Other Russian River beers on tap, some of which have never been on tap in LA before, include Pliny the Elder, Damnation, Redemption, Mortification…great names. If you miss the Younger here, there will be some available at sister bar, Verdugo Bar.

Magnum Pop-up at Pal Cabron
Magnum pop-up part deux, featuring the food of Chef Joseph Mahon (Bastide) and wine pairings by David Haskell (Bin 8945), is going to be a blast, especially the late hours which will have a dj and even a pinata bashing. Whoever finds the Magnum condom that falls out of the pinata with the Mexican candy wins dinner for two at the next Magnum pop-up. Make your reservations asap as there are only a few spots left. This Weekend: Free Pisco Sours, Vintage Sale, White Trash Wine/Food Tasting

Wow, lots of fun things going on this weekend. What have you got going on?

Thursday, February 3

Mo Chica’s 17th Tasting with Bossa Nova
Chef de Cuisine Ricardo Lopez will present his 17th Thursday tasting menu, while Bill Esparaza, blogger of StreetGourmetLA will be playing saxophone with his Bossa Nova group, Cachaca Nova from 6-10pm. Good food and music and a festive atmosphere. What better way to kick off the weekend?

Friday, February 4

White Trash Deluxe Wine and Food Tasting
To be clear, this has no affiliation with Colorado Wine Company’s annual white trash tasting. Unlike CoWineCo this one offers “gourmet” interpretations of white trash food: truffled Chex mix, pigs in Croissant blankets, potato skins with aged cheddar and lardon, and artisanal marshmallow fluff and peanut butter brioche sandwiches. Fancy! Each dish will be paired with fancy vino. Fun way to watch the Super Bowl, which starts at 2 on Sunday.

  • Friday-Sunday. $30. Vintage Enoteca, 7554 W. Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles (map). Reservations: (323) 512-5278.

826LA’s Dead Author Reading with HG Wells and Anais Nin
I keep meaning to check out these Dead Author Readings, which sound hilarious and feature comedian Paul F. Tompkins as moderator HG Wells. This weekend’s special guest dead author is none other than Anais Nin (Maya Rudolph of Saturday Night Live). You might remember Anais (great name) from her 1940s erotica and her fling with Henry Miller. Should be a lively discussion.

  • 6:30pm. $5. UCB Theatre, 5919 Franklin Avenue, Los Angeles (map).

Rachel Pally Blowout Warehouse Sale
Get 55-85% off a bunch of Rachel Pally at this amazing-sounding sale which will feature the Holiday 2010 collection as well as Summer/Fall 2010 fashions.

  • Friday, 10am-6pm; Saturday, 10am-5pm; Sunday, 11am-4pm. 2301 E. 7th Street, Suite C100, Los Angeles (map).

Saturday, February 5

Free Pisco Sour Day
Toast this cocktail day with a free Pisco Sour at The Buffalo Club, Big Bar, Rivera or Red Medicine. All you have to do is get your coupon from the Discover Pisco. Flash that puppy at one of the participating bars and then cheers! One free Gran Sierpe Pisco Sour per customer, all others will be discounted.

Chic & You Shall Find’s Vintage Liquidation Sale
Cheap vintage! Yeah, you probably NEVER see those words together. In any case, apparently this store is shutting down (at least that’s what the email that I got about it implies) and needs to get rid of everything asap. Shop $10 and $20 racks!

  • 11am-4pm. 1203 S. La Jolla Avenue, Los Angeles (map).

Poster Peepshow: The Art of the Pin Up
I LOVE vintage pinup girls and here’s a whole poster show of them. Peruse works by Rolf Armstrong, Jim Silke and Olivia De Berardinis, who will be signing copies of her book at 6pm before the party. The opening reception sounds like a blast with live model drawing with the Suicide Girls and an appearance by Catwoman, Julie Newmar. Refreshments and food will be served. Must be 18 and over to attend.

  • 7-11pm. Gallery Nucleus, 210 East Main Street, Alhambra (map).

Last year’s items consisted of anything from a life-size cut-out of Freddy Mercury to a photo of a team member kissing a drive-thru employee of a fast food restaurant. Fun! And it’s for a good cause as it will also help gather material goods like dry food and shoes for downtown LA’s Union Rescue Mission and the LA Food Bank.
