Boozing With Man’s BFF: Dog-Friendly Bars in Culver City

Mya in a t-shirt by Holly Hite

Mya in her going-out clothes.

Ever since I got my rescue pit bull Mya, I want to take her with me everywhere. I mean, wook at that wittle face! Unfortunately, most bars/restaurants usually won’t let me share a table with my new canine bff, something about it being a violation of a health code or something. Pfft! In any case, that hasn’t stopped me from trying to find places within the 1.5-mile radius of where I live in Culver City/Palms where I can booze it up with Mya close by. Here’s what I found.

Akasha: Akasha has a couple of patios, one adjacent to the dining room and one off the café side. Dogs aren’t allowed on the patio but can be tied up outside it. Although I love stopping by here for a little breakfast and the happy hour, I’m squeamish about leaving Mya outside the fence since the sidewalk is kinda narrow so if other dogs walk by there could be a problem. In any case the trick is to score a seat off to the side away from the main thoroughfare. Recommended drink: One of the organic seasonal cocktails (the list on the site needs to be updated).

Bigfoot West: They have a patio enclosed by a fence with slats so you can tie your pooch to the outside of it and pet him/her through the spaces, if your hand can fit, that is. Unfortunately, this is a smoking patio so if you can’t stand the smell of cigarette smoke, you might want to skip this one since it seems like a lot of Bigfoot’s patrons like that bad habit. I hate smoke but the appeal of a great beer selection  and whiskey was hard to resist. Happy hour is daily from 5-9pm with $5 cocktails. Recommended drink: Boont Amber Ale on tap — smooth, flavorful, refreshing or a Manhattan. The happy hour drinks are too light (and sweet) for my taste so I stay away.

Father’s Office: Surprisingly the place that doesn’t allow photography, babies or ketchup lets you bring your dog but only if you tie him/her up outside of the patio. What I like about this is that Mya is dog-aggressive but since she’s tucked in behind plants and there’s a lot of room for people and their dogs to walk a wide birth around her she can’t get into trouble. Anyway, yay for enjoying really tasty craft beer alongside man’s best friend. Recommended drink: Can’t go wrong with any of their beers plus they also have a full bar so check out their Manhattan.

Gyenari: OK the food and cocktails here aren’t all that great but gotta love a patio with heated lamps and a place to tie up your doggy nearby. When I went they said I had to tie Mya outside of the fence but shhhh! they didn’t yell at me when she “snuck” onto the patio. Heh. Recommended drink: Stick to straight booze, neat or on the rocks. UPDATE 4/21/11: Gyenari is now closed but has been replaced with MoKo.

Le Saint Amour: The patio of this French brasserie actually has a place designated pour les chiens. It’s tucked in from the sidewalk so your dog doesn’t get stepped on by passers-by. Great place for enjoying wine and bites with friends. Keep in mind that they have delicious bone marrow here. However when I tried to give the leftover bone to Mya, she wouldn’t have it. She’s one picky eater. Recommended drink: Take your pick from beers like Allagash or Le Fin du Monde or from the wine list which features wine by the glass from $9-$15.

Native Foods: If you’re into organic beers (I’m not really), this is the place for you. They have a patio so you can enjoy your En ”Cha-Cha” Lada Bowl and Stone beer with Fido (on the other side of the fence of course).

Rush Street: Now I haven’t taken Mya to this Culver City barestaurant yet but they are right next door to Gyenari and also have a patio that you can tie your dog outside of. Same situation in terms of food and cocktails as Gyenari — meaning meh — but take your pick if you want to sit at a bustling patio or a quieter one. They have happy hour here but it’s only applicable to the second floor. Bew. Recommended drink: Draft beer or straight booze (their cocktails are too sweet for the likes of me).

Cinco de Mayo 2010: Mustache Airbrushing, Mexican Beer Pong, Umami & a Movie

Pose (detail) by Philo Nordlund

Pose (detail) by Philo Nordlund

Tired of the same old, same old for Cinco de Mayo? It doesn’t have to be about another margarita, another mariachi, another hangover. Here are five unusual ways to celebrate Mexico’s victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla, or as it’s commonly called, Cinco de Mayo.

25 Degrees’ Sonoran Hot Dog: 25 Degrees in Hollywood Roosevelt is not only offering free chips and salsa all day long and tequila and Mexican beer specials during 5-7pm happy hour but a special treat. The Sonoran hot dog seems like a random food not at all related to Mexico but it does have some chili and refried beans, as well as caramelized onions, tomatoes, queso fresco, mustard and garlic aioli AND it’s wrapped in bacon. A perfect way to fortify your stomach for the drinking ahead.

Mexico Restaurante y Barra All Day Specials: For the hard-core partyers there are lots of specials going on at this West Hollywood Mexican restaurant starting at noon and going til 2am; where to begin? For a fiver you get your choice of Dos Equis and Tecate Beer Drafts, tacos (pollo, carnitas or veggie) or appetizers like tamales or taquitos. Naturally margaritas are involved. Take your pick of traditional or strawberry for $8 a glass or $22 pitcher. Good thing designated driver service, Y Drive LA, will be on hand to take your drunk ass and your car home.

Rush Street Mexican Beer Pong and “Break the Pinata” Contest: This Culver City barestaurant is where you’ll want to go for some fun and games. Not only will they have Mexican beer pong, slurball and flip cup but a “Break the Pinata” contest. For sustenance, they’ll be rolling out their own dollar taco stand from 5-7pm. Mariachi band “Los Imperiales” will keep you on your feet while you imbibe from a selection of 20 tequilas and five Mexican beers. And then it’s a dj and dancing from 9pm to close.

Spanish Kitchen Drink Wheel and Mustache Airbrushing: This fiesta at Spanish Kitchen on La Cienega sounds like a blast, especially since they’ll be doing free mustache airbrushing (choose from six different styles). Will make for some fun pictures to look at the next day when you’re sober. And why just order off a menu when you can spin a drink wheel for your chance of winning one of 12 different top-shelf tequila shots and margaritas for five bucks? Masked luchadores from Lucha Va Voom as well as the Las Chicas Cazadores will be providing the entertainment and Tecate will be $3 all day and night.

Umami Burger presents… Dinner and a Movie: Three Amigos: The only sombreros you’ll see at this Cinco party are the ones on the screen. I never liked this movie with three formerly funny comedians but I do like Umami and beer. And this Cinco kicks off a Wednesday night movie series at Space 15Twenty where you can enjoy a free flick with a sample of craft beer and your order of Umami burger. The house ale of the evening will be Nakhon Lager, which is brewed with jasmine rice.

OK, I know I said only five ways but, come on, I had to include cupcakes. Sprinkles Cupcakes has a holiday Choco Loco cupcake made with Belgian dark chocolate cake with bittersweet chocolate and Mexican cinnamon frosting. Or check out Yummy Cupcakes’ unusual Chocolate Chili cupcake, a chocolate cupcake with a light blend of chilies frosted with a chocolate/chili buttercream. Yummy!

But whatever trouble you get in tomorrow, above all, be safe: 4 Ways To Be Safe on Alcoholidays.

Rush Street: Girls’ Night Out of Pole Dancing & Girly Drinks

Pole Dancing 101

Pole Dancing 101

I did something the other night that I swore to myself I’d never ever do. I took a pole dancing lesson. Yup. Rush Street has an ’80s ladies’ night on Wednesdays on its second floor where ladies can take a free pole dancing lesson courtesy of Studio City’s pole dancing/fitness studio, Polistic. And I was invited to this girls-only media dinner which showcased this as well as the Culver City barestaurant’s new spring cocktail menu.

I told my friends who pooh-poohed the bar night that I was just going to take pictures and maybe some video of other bloggers taking on the pole but that I would never deign touch it myself. I’m not a big party girl and definitely not the type to sexy it up for some random male attention at a bar.

But then after our dinner of yummy portabello mushroom fries, miso and sake marinated salmon, crab ravioli and grilled shrimp and some tasty mocktails, our group of gals took the party upstairs. A couple of the instructors showed us around the pole, starting off with a basic spin around it. “The only thing I require is that we all cheer as loud as we can for everyone,” the instructor said. Little did I know how much this would help.

It also helped that most every girl had taken a turn on the pole and that the move was so easy I really had no excuse not to give it a try. Oh, except one. “I ate too much,” I warned the instructor when she tried to get me on the pole. But even then I already had one hand on it and the girls were already shouting words of encouragement from the sidelines. “Alll riiight, I’ll be a good sport,” I told myself while listening to the instructor’s instructions to put my left hand over my right hand on the bar overhead and then wrap my left leg around the bar. She then pushed me so I fell to the left and twirled around the bar in a not very graceful way.

The girls cheered loudly anyway, “Woooooooooh!” I know my style was a far cry from pro but it was kinda fun. Took me back to when I was a kid and loved playing on the monkey bars. I even got the friction burn on my hands like I did in the old days.

Now, I did this stone sober because I’m in the midst of a booze fast but this would probably have been a lot more fun and swirly if I had had a couple of cocktails beforehand. Fortunately Rush Street knows that and has some liquid courage specials on this ladies’ night: $6 X-Rated vodka cocktails, $9 Pretty in Pink Cosmo (X-Rated, vodka, pineapple, cranberry) and Pink-a-licious Martini (X-Rated, Sprite, cranberry, vodka). Yes, they’re made from X-Rated Fusion Liqueur, a very sweet and fruity drink ingredient. However, I suspect that those who love the pole won’t mind the girly drinks.

If, however, you’d prefer to imbibe something other than a melon/berry/mango-y drink, the bar has a new spring cocktail menu that’s heavy in the flavored vodka department and seems girl-drink-intensive but has some interesting concoctions:

Some of the drinks on the Spring Fling Cocktail Menu ($12 each):

  • Bronx Cocktail: Plymouth Gin, Cinzano Sweet Vermouth, Cinzano Dry Vermouth, orange juice, simple syrup
  • El Diablo: Absolut Ruby Red, watermelon syrup, jalapenos, cranberry juice, lemon and lime juice
  • Ginger Rogers: Beefeater 24, ginger syrup, lemon juice, mint, topped with ginger ale
  • Lady Rio: Sagatiba Cachaca, Caravella Lemoncello, Dailys pomegranate syrup, simple syrup, raspberries
  • Orange Clover: Jameson, Aperol, orange juice, simple syrup
  • Pear Flower: Grey Goose La Poire Vodka, St. Germain, lemon and lime juice, grapefruit juice
  • Strawberry Fields: Absolut Citron, strawberry, lemon, simple syrup, float of prosecco

I was able to try the mocktail versions of El Diablo and Strawberry Fields. Both were pretty tasty even without the booze. Although I have to say that just by reading the ingredients for El Diablo, it sounded like it had too much going on what with the grapefruit, watermelon, jalapenos and cranberry. Eesh! But the Flavorpill editor sitting next to me ordered it and loved it.

Anyhoo, if you’d like to give Rush Street’s ’80s Ladies’ Night a shot, it goes off every Wednesday night starting at 9pm. The pole dancing lessons are FREE. If you’re into this sorta thing, it could be a fun girls’ night out.
