Joe’s Restaurant in Venice: The Best Well Liquor?

Joe's - Drunk Chicken Cocktail

Joe's - Drunk Chicken Cocktail courtesy of Joe's Restaurant

The fact that 20-year-old Venice eatery, Joe’s Restaurant on Abbot Kinney, is launching a new market-driven cocktail list with local, seasonal ingredients isn’t really news. Especially in light of the fact that many cocktail-serious bars have already been doing this for years. But that it counts premium liquors for its well booze is pretty darn impressive. Joe’s beverage director Jennifer Zerboni has stocked her bar with Corralejo for well tequila and Rittenhouse Rye, “North American Whiskey of the Year,” for well bourbon (WELL bourbon!) because, as she says, “I like my guests and don’t want them getting headaches from any of my drinks.” Awww, I love her!

And, yes, it’s not your imagination, Rittenhouse Rye IS in very limited supply. “I love the taste of the Rittenhouse, but it is very hard to get so I am always on a waiting list. Whenever we get it in, I stock it in my well because it is a little stronger and I think it makes the drinks taste better. Whenever we are out of it, I stock the well with Old Overholt which I also like a lot, until I get another bottle of the Rittenhouse,” says Jennifer.

If you’re curious about her new headache-free cocktails ($10-$12), though, check out this menu. Below are some of the more intriguing picks.

  • B.S. Rita: Corralejo Silver, lime, simple farmers market strawberries, basil, salt rim
  • Drunk Chicken: Dry London Gin, lemon, rhubarb simple syrup, egg white, rhubarb bitters
  • Fleur de Lis: Luksusowa Vodka, lemon, grapefruit, elderflower liqueur, muddled basil
  • Venice Peach: Buffalo Trace Bourbon, housemade peach puree, lemon, peach, pastis

They also serve classics like Sazeracs and Hemingway Daiquiris as well as agua frescas like watermelon mint and cantaloupe ginger for your designated drivers. Go, Joe’s!

St. Patrick’s Day Cocktail Roundup: No Green Beer

Token Irishman

Drago Centro's Token Irishman cocktail.

Since I don’t celebrate alcoholidays and will most likely be hiding out at home during St. Patrick’s Day next Wednesday, I thought it would be interesting to find out if some of my fave L.A. mixologists/bars were planning any special cocktails to celebrate the Irish holiday. I emailed Damian, Joe, Steve, Pablo, Marcos and Vincenzo. And then? Crickets.

I had to email them again and even then only Steve and Vincenzo responded to say that they had nothing for me. Oh well. At least I could count on my PR friends to send me info on what L.A. restaurants are doing for the holiday in terms of green beer alternatives. Check out my LA Weekly Squid Ink post here. It also includes a couple of recipes if you opt for celebrating at home.

Win Tickets to The Edison’s Radio Room, Free Drinks & Reserved Table

Cocktails at the Radio Room.

Cocktail at the Radio Room.

**********CONTEST CLOSED************

Have you always wanted to check out the fabulous Radio Room night at the Edison downtown but have an aversion to cover charges? I feel ya, that’s why I was ecstatic when Dan Cox of Dan Cox PR offered me a pair of VIP tickets to give away to one of my lucky readers for next week’s Radio Room.

If you’ve never heard of the Radio Room, it’s one night in mixology heaven where once a month the Edison brings over some of the best bartenders from around the country. So you don’t have to trek all the way to New York’s Death & Company to enjoy a cocktail made by mixologist Alex Day or to Portland to get a taste of mixologist Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s creations.

And for next week, guest bartenders will include the Edison’s brand-new Director of Spirits, Joseph Brooke. It’ll probably be one of the rare moments that you’ll be able to get a drink made by him since he’ll undoubtedly have his hands full running the Edison from now on. (Although you will still be able to visit him at Copa d’Oro in Santa Monica til April 1.) Joe will be joined by the highly esteemed Brian Miller of New York’s Death & Company and Erick Castro of San Francisco’s Bourbon & Branch/Rickhouse Bar.

Radio Room Cocktail List ($14 each):

  • Gilda (by Brian): Herradura Blanco Tequila, fresh pineapple and lime juices, blended with cinnamon bark syrup.
  • High Tea (by Joe): Black tea-infused London Dry Gin, honey, lemon and milk topped with soda.
  • Hispaniola (by Brian): Flor de Cana Rum infused with Summer Royale Tea with a splash of lime, a hint of fresh sugar cane and ginger syrup.
  • Kentucky Buck (by Erick): Woodford Reserve Bourbon, lemon juice, turbinado simple, strawberry puree and ginger beer.
  • Miss Behavin’ (by Brian): 100-proof Laird’s bonded apple brandy with Clear Creek Pear Brandy, citrus sugar and topped with champagne.
  • The Porco Rosso (by Joe): High West Rye Whiskey, Aperol, Carpano Antica with bitters and citrus.
  • Sancho’s Lady (by Erick): Herradura Blanco Tequila and LeCompte Calvafos with orange juice, lemon, turbinado simple and small hands grenadine.

So the winner of this pair of tickets not only gains free entry (reg. $10/person) to the Edison but THREE DRINK TICKETS (value $14 per drink) per person! AND a reserved table for the evening.

Maan, that’s better than the deal I’m getting which is a media pass and a drink ticket. OK, I’m not really complaining. I promise to be happy for whomever wins.

OK so how do you win these tickets? Just do the following:

  1. Leave a comment below with your email address (so I can contact you if you win) and your Twitter handle as well as what’s your go-to cocktail after a hard day. There is no right answer, I’m just curious.
  2. Tweet this: “I need a drink @carolineoncrack! Gimme tix 2 The Edison’s Radio Room! http://bit.ly/c5myF3″

At 1pm PST on Monday the 22nd, I’ll plug your entries into the randomizer, pick out a winner and notify you.

Good luck! Oh, and BTW, if you win, remember to be nice to your bartenders and servers! And I’m not talking just a pretty smile; tip!

What’s the Most Romantic Cocktail?

Lambrusco Rosemary Gin Fizz photo by Claire Barrett

Lambrusco Rosemary Gin Fizz photo by Claire Barrett

Ferget chocolates. I don’t know about you but nothing says “olive juice”(mouth it) like a custom-made cocktail. But out of curiosity, I asked some of L.A.’s top mixologists/bartenders what they consider to be the most romantic cocktail; specifically what would they serve their luh-vuh. I got some interesting answers, all seem to involve bubbly, and even a couple of recipes for you to try on your own special someone, be it for yourself or your SO.

For Natalie Bovis-Nelsen, The Liquid Muse and cocktail book author (Preggatinis), it’s all about her Lambrusco Rosemary Fizz, which is actually cited in her new cocktail book, The Bubbly Bride. “Originality is the key to a creative girl’s heart, so rather than the same old hum-drum champagne, surprise your sweetie with a red sparkling cocktail. I love Lambrusco, which is an Italian sparkling red wine – and I especially like it with the earthy rosemary nuances in this drink. Whether you’re getting married or having a simple romantic occasion, this is a drink to remember!”

Lambrusco Rosemary Fizz
by Natalie Bovis-Nelsen, The Bubbly Bride

  • 1 orange wheel
  • 3-4 fresh rosemary leaves
  • 3/4 ounce Grand Marnier
  • 4 ounces sparkling Lambrusco
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary

Muddle orange wheel and rosemary leaves in the bottom of mixing glass. Add Grand Marnier and shake with ice. Strain into a champagne coupe. Top with Lambrusco. Garnish with the sprig of fresh rosemary.

Aidan Demarest, The Edison and First and Hope: “Champagne. Girls think it’s harmless because it’s all bubbly but then it hits them. It’s a real panty dropper.”

Steve Livigni, of new rum bar La Descarga, offered a short and sweet: “A giant glass of Veuve Clicquot Rose with my girlfriend in it.”

For Pablo Moix, also of La Descarga, his idea of a “romantic cocktail” also involves effervescence. “Bubbles and strawberries have been a romantic staple for years but, I think that if you make it delicious and with a twist, raise the ABV of your cocktail just a little, it will get the romance started a little sooner.”

  • 1 ounce Cazadores Blanco Tequila
  • 1/2 ounce Lemon juice
  • 1/2 ounce Lillet rouge
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup
  • Top with Martini & Rossi Prosecco

Served in a flute and garnish with a strawberry.

Rhachel Shaw of Malo: “My barback made a Ramos Gin Fizz for his girlfriend once. Now she loves them so he makes them all the time despite the fact that they are a pain in the ass to make. I think it’s pretty romantic that he shakes his little arms off to make his lady happy.”

Rhachel also shared a V Day cocktail special they’re serving up at Malo: “Maybe it’s because I’m having a contrarian streak about Valentine’s Day but in addition to the other cocktail specials we’re having just for this weekend, I have one called the Lover’s Dare Margarita. It’s Ocho Tequila Reposado, Grand Marnier Centenaire, lime and agave. You also have the option of added salt which is Velvet De Guerande Sea Salt from France, which tastes like butter. It’s a $25 margarita. I don’t know if I’m looking to start couples a fightin’ [over its cost]. I might be. I like to think of it as the ‘Do these jeans make me look fat?’ of cocktails.”

Damian Windsor of Roger Room: “How about ‘the Pash,’ common slang in commonwealth countries  for French kissing? Not to be confused with an Australian kiss which is a French kiss down under…. [My wife] loves passionfruit, it’s very exotic, and just like love it is sweet and sour at the same time, a reminder that relationships are work.”

  • 1 ounce passionfruit juice
  • 1/2 ounce Aperol
  • 3 ounces prosecco

Add ingredients to a mixing tin and stir before serving in a champagne flute.
