Beachwood BBQ and Library Alehouse’s “Pliny the Younger Fights Cancer” Charity Raffle Thru February 18

Russian River growlers Flickr shot by --Mark--

Every year beer geeks go insane for Russian River’s Pliny the Younger Triple IPA. So much so that labyrinthine lines form around the blocks of the very few bars that are lucky enough to get a hold of the allotted five gallons of the beer.

Yes, Pliny the Younger is only available for purchase at a very few bars because as the brewery’s site says “it is extremely difficult, time and space consuming, and very expensive to make.” Even mothership Russian River brewpub in Santa Rosa doesn’t allow growlers or bottles, rather you are welcome to a 10-ounce glass of the 10.5% ABV beer. And as if its rarity isn’t enough to fuel the fervor, currently Pliny the Younger, not to be confused with Russian River’s more readily available Pliny the Elder Double IPA? Ranks No. 1 out of 100 on Beer Advocate’s list of top beers. Settle down, settle down.

So where can you, a SoCal beer lover, get a hold of this NorCal ambrosia? Russian River Brewery has announced that Pliny will be released this Friday, February 3; and local beer bars Beachwood BBQ (Seal Beach) and Library Alehouse (Santa Monica) will indeed carry it! However the bars will be controlling the chaos by selling $5 raffle tickets for a chance to win/purchase a pint. So you don’t have to stand in line for the beer or suffer Walmart-on-Black-Friday-type crowds, PLUS 100% of the proceeds from the raffle ticket sales will go to the Melanoma Research Foundation, in memory of Beachwood BBQ’s friend Tony Carbone who died of melanoma in 2008.

Beachwood BBQ, both Seal Beach and Long Beach locations, has been selling tickets, to raffle off its 130 pints, since January 17 and will continue to do so til February 18. While Santa Monica’s Library Alehouse will start selling its tickets for a chance at purchasing one of 50 glasses of Pliny for 25 cents, on February 3rd. There’s no limit to how many raffle tickets you can buy but it is cash only.

Winners will then be drawn on February 20 and contacted via email and then have 10 days to fetch their pints. Mmm, can you taste it already?

By the way, other bars that will be carrying Pliny the Younger: Lucky Baldwin’s, Verdugo Bar and The Surly Goat!

Thursday, November 3

Movember Cocktail Party at the Spare Room
To celebrate the month of Movember, Hollywood Roosevelt’s Spare Room is throwing a philanthropic party where proceeds from its special “Mo-Cocktail” (Del Maguey mescal, dark cacao, coffee heering, cayenne, smoked salt, chocolate cream float) and photobooth will go to Movember, to support prostate cancer (never thought I’d type those words in my blog) and other male cancer initiatives. Swedish/Canadian beauty Malin Akerman (Watchmen) will be hosting, Warpaint will perform and Tim Nordwin (OK Go) will dj.

  • 9pm. Spare Room, 7000 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood (map). (323) 769-7296.

Wet Hop Mini-Fest at Library Alehouse
This Santa Monica beer restaurant will be celebrating the unique craft brew trend that is Wet Hops through November 9 or “until we can’t fill the handles anymore.” Wet hops are those that are freshly picked and overnighted to brewers to be used in their pale ales and IPAs. Stop by and check out the five taps (possibly 6 tonight).

  • Thru November 9, 6-11:30pm. Library Alehouse, 2911 Main Street, Santa Monica (map). (310) 314-4855.

Saturday, November  5

Free LA Opera Open House
This sounds like it’s going to be an awesome event, well, to opera fans. In celebration of its 25th anniversary, LA Opera is opening its doors to the public. You’ll get behind-the-scene tours (scenery/prop and costume/wig displays!), demos and even a Q&A with Placido Domingo himself! There will also be two concerts where Placido will conduct as well as perform!

This Weekend: Belgian Beer Garden, Chanel for Sale, Princess Bride Drinking Game

It’s my big move weekend! So excited. OK, not really. Because that will mean that I probably won’t be able to go to any of these fun events. Sad trombone.

Friday, July 22

The Paper Bag Princess Vintage Super Summer Sale
I always drive pass by the store on Olympic and drool over its gorgeous dresses in the window display. So happy happy joy joy that they’re having a week-long sale with items marked up to 90% off. They said there will be no less than 30 racks packed with finds 75-90% off. Peruse designer handbags, costume jewelry and even bridal gowns.

  • 11am. Paper Bag Princess, 8818 West Olympic Boulevard, Beverly Hills (map).

Saturday, July 23

ColLAboration #5: Belgian Independence Day
My second favorite Independence Day celebrating awesome beer-making Belgium. For $15 (plus 69-cent service fee) you get a limited-edition Duvel collector’s goblet as well as entry into future ColLAboration beer gardens. It’s highly recommended you buy your membership glass in advance since there will be a limited amount sold at the event. If you buy from The Full Pint, you get three beer tokens (normally $6 each) and the goblet and admission for $24!

  • 12-9pm. Admission: $15-$24. 8950 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood (map).

A Drinking Game: The Princess Bride
A drinking game around The Princess Bride sounds like a really good time. The rules? The audience and the actors — yes, it’s a live performance — take a swig on specific keywords and cues signaled by a bell. How much do you want to bet that “Inconceivable” makes it as a drink cue? Molly Malone’s will have cheap drafts for sale and there will also be props like swords and masks to really get in the mood.

  • 7-10pm. $10. Molly Malone’s, 575 S Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles (map). (323) 935-1577.

Sunday, July 24

GLAAD Hancock Park: Top Chef Invasion
This intimate food fest with tasting stations featuring Comme Ca, Dominick’s and Little Next Door and a Top Chef Challenge hosted by Susan Feniger is all for a great cause: the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). General admission is $100 but for the Platinum Level tickets ($150) you get judging entry to the chef challenge!

  • 4-7pm. Home of Dean Hansell, 667 S. June, Los Angeles (map).

Angeleno’s Live & Dine LA
Every year I look forward to this event which celebrates Angeleno Magazine‘s annual restaurant awards. All the food tasting stations from the issue’s winning restaurants and chefs — like Scott Conant of Scarpetta, Sang Yoon of Lukshon and Kris Yenbamroong of Night + Market — are laid out all around the Fairmont Miramar Hotel’s ginormous fig tree. There will also be culinary demos as well as a nice sampling of wines and spirits.

  • 4:30-7pm. Tickets: $95 general, $150 VIP. Fairmont Miramar Hotel, 101 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica (map).

L.A. Beer Experts Pair Craft Beer With 4th of July Barbeque

Barbecue by Caroline on Crack

What would make this even tastier? Beeeer!

As a food enthusiast, for your Fourth of July barbecue, you’re probably not going to want to sully your Kansas City-style spareribs experience by washing them down with a Bud Light. No, you’ll want the perfect brew to complement that spicy sweet sauciness…and another beer to go with the rosemary potato salad, and one to go with that bourbon caramel apple pie.

Fortunately, Los Angeles beer experts — Jimmy Han (Beer Belly), Thomas Kelley (Library Alehouse), Alex Macy (Sunset Beer Company) and Christine Perozzi (The Beer Chicks), who curated the beer selection at next month’s Craft Beer Crawl — are here to help you with your craft beer-paired BBQ needs. Here are their suggestions to complement popular barbecue party staples.

Barbecued Meats: “Brewed with three types of rye malt, The Bruery Rugbrod brown ale that emphasizes the earthy, spicy character of the grain with hints of roasted malt, would balance the flavor of the meat and have some bitter crispness to cut the richness.” — Han

“BBQ rib depends on the style of sauce. With Hoisin-based sauce, Firestone 14 is incredible. Big, dark, and complex with ample sweetness to balance the heat. Other big beers and barleywines will pair well with bold sauces. Rauchbier or “smoked beer” is a good choice across the board for obvious reasons. The traditional one is from Aecht Schenkerla. Alaskan Smoked Porter would be wondrous with Memphis style, and for the more acidic styles based around vinegar I think a well-balanced Flanders Red might be an interesting pairing, say Rodenbach.” — Kelley

“My favorite all-around pairings with the stuff would probably be a fresh and hoppy Pilsner, a Marzen like Paulaner Oktoberfest, or a lighter dry stout.” — Macy

“I always love a smoked black lager with BBQ. L-O-V-E! Craftsman makes a great one and the black lager style is really catching on.” — Perozzi

Potato Salad: “Eagle Rock Brewery Revolution (XPA) is a hoppy pale ale that would bring some crisp, refreshing hoppiness to the starchy, sweetness of a potato salad.” — Han

“Totally depends on dressing and additional ingredients. For traditional, I’d probably go with a crisp Hellespont lager, say from Sudwerk. Light, refreshing, and palette scrubbing.” — Kelley

“If it’s one with dill, I’ve found that to conflict with hops, but I usually like something malty but pretty light. You could do one of the amber lagers, or something like a cream ale (the American style, not the Irish or British beer that is often confused to be cream ale). On that note, for a really great cream ale, try the one from Taps.” — Macy

“I love to pair a nice herbaceous IPA with hints of rosemary and grass…plus the dryness in the hops really works with the creaminess of a mayo-based potato salad.” — Perozzi

Apple Pie: “Craftsman Triple White Sage with a bright aromatic and 9% ABV would complement the sweet apple pie and crust to bring a unique characteristic of sweet and herby.” — Han

“Ephemere from Unibroue. They use Granny Smiths in that beer, it’s super fruity but highly carbonated, and fairly dry.” — Kelley

“If you’re putting vanilla ice cream on top, my favorite is something like Thomas Hardy’s ale, Gouden Carolus Grand Cru of the emperor, or even something dark like an imperial stout! And if you want to go really intense, it could probably even work with Alesmith Speedway Stout (it might overpower, but it could also be the perfect analog to having coffee with your pie).” — Macy

“There’s no other beer I’d pair with the apple pie than the Ephemere Pomme from Unibroue…. unless I went with Allagash Curieux aged in Bourbon barrels. Forget about it.” — Perozzi

This Weekend: Gigantic Warehouse Sale, Ugly Sweater Party, SaMo Pub Crawl

No one panic. Sure this is the last weekend before the holidays but check out all the fun events going on! Fortunately, most involve drinking.

Friday, December 17

Eagle Rock Brewery’s Ugly Sweater Party
You know you have one, everyone does: an ugly sweater that was either a well-intended gift handmade by crazy ol’ Aunt Franny or something you made in Home Ec. Now’s the time to dust it off and put it to good use. Bring it to Eagle Rock Brewery and if it’s voted The Ugliest you win a free Eagle Rock Brewery T-shirt and a pint glass! I just wanna see a room full of ugly sweater-wearing beer drinkers.

  • 4-10pm. Eagle Rock Brewery, 3056 Roswell Street, Los Angeles (map). (323) 257-7866.

4th Street’s Annual Holiday “Mad Men” Style Open House
Love vintage, retro, Mad Men style? Retro Row in Long Beach is opening all its doors in celebration of the holidays. Peruse 36-plus shops for great deals on vintage fashions. There will specials and music as well as cocktails and mocktails.

  • 6-9pm. 4th Street (from Junipero to Cherry), Long Beach (map).

Saturday, December 18

Holiday Giant Warehouse Sale
I know it’s a drag to have to shop for others for a change so discounts and deals during the holidays are always much appreciated. And you’ll find over 40,000 fashionable items marked down to 80% off at this weekend warehouse sale! Brands include BCBG Max Azria, C&C California, English Laundry and more. BONUS: I’ll be giving away five $50 gift cards for this sale. I’ll post the deets on my Facebook at noon today so stay tuned!

  • Saturday-Sunday. LA Convention Center, South Hall G, 1201 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles (map).

2nd Annual Santa Monica Pub Crawl
It’s time to be merry and full of holiday cheer and this annual pub crawl will help you do just that. What’s awesome about it is that you have three routes to choose from. So you can hit up your favorite bars on Main Street, explore the ones around the pier or stay inland at the bars on Wilshire near Brentwood.

  • 5pm. Various bars in Santa Monica (map).

Monday, December 20

Kickoff for Holiday Beer Fest at Library Alehouse
Speaking of drinking, one of my favorite beer pubs will be kicking off two weeks of holiday brew (10 rotating taps of seasonal and strong ales). For $10 you get a Library Alehouse tasting glass and a beer. I know, tasting glass is pretty small but you get to use it for $2.50-$5 refills throughout the fest. Holiday brews include St. Bernardus Noell and Avery Jubilation Ale, my faves! And if you want to fortify your stomach, the restaurant is offering 10% off their food for those two weeks.

  • Library Alehouse, 2911 Main Street, Santa Monica (map). (310) 314-4855.
