Resistance Is Futile: LA Street Food Fest + Giveaway

Starry Kitchen and Less Than 3 Is Me by Caroline on Crack

Will Nguyen of Starry Kitchen sport the banana at this year's LA Street Food Fest?

Carmaggedon. Autopocalypse. The 405 freeway closed the whole weekend from the 101 to 10? What’s a Westsider who wants to hit up foodie favorite event LA Street Food Fest in Pasadena on July 16th to do?

Feel the Lure of LA Food Fest

Sailor Jerry Rum bartenders by Caroline on Crack

A Sailor Jerry Rum bar if you want something other than beer, gin or tequila.

I mean, who would want to brave what’s being touted to be the clusterfuck from hell even if LASFF is a fun event featuring the food of LA’s most popular food trucks like Great Balls on Tires, Grilled Cheese Truck and The Frymsith?

And sure, restaurants Mo-Chica/Picca, Pal Cabron, and Starry Kitchen will also be serving up food and there’s even an Ice Cream Social with Scoops and Batch From Scratch, Bulgarini Gelato, CoolHaus and Ice Ice Shavie, the new mixology-driven shaved ice truck… Oh dear, that’s pretty hard to resist. (List of participants)

The things that may just push any booze-loving Westsider over the edge though? The Tequila Tasting Tent showcasing 13 tequilas as well as the Hendrick’s Gin sponsored Test Kitchen Luxe Lounge with Chef Farid Zadi and renowned mixologist Julian Cox (Rivera/Playa). Julian will be mixing up some unique specialties just for the event including his Gin y Hendrix with Hendrick’s gin, lime, mint, agave, salt and cucumber espuma as well as his Peat Rose with Hendrick’s, lemon, cane sugar, seltzer, lemon verbena, Islay Scotch and rose air. Now, do you still want to hole up at home with all this going on?

As Much as You Hate the Word, Call It a Staycation

Mayor Villaraigosa and Susan Feniger by Caroline on Crack

The mayor will be returning to the food fest this year sans cast.

If you’re finding it hard to stick to your side of town but really don’t want to worry about driving either, LASFF organizer Shawna Dawson, the city of Pasadena and even Mayor Villaraigosa are trying to convince Westsiders to just take a “staycation” by booking a hotel room in the vicinity of the event.

The Courtyard Marriott in Old Town Pasadena is offering a special discount rate of $119 a night as well as a free shuttle to get to the event (perfect, considering that tequila tent). Well, it could be fun exploring what the ‘Dena has to offer. Hmm, I would be able to actually drink more at 1886 without having to worry about the long drive back home since the bar is just an affordable cab ride away from the Marriott.

Fun Things To Do in the ‘Dena During Your Stay

And Ms. Shawna, who herself is a resident of the 626, offered up other fun things to do, see, eat in Pasadena.

  • Relax at the Langham Hotel’s Huntington Spa with either their new summer Lemon Mint Swedish Massage (60 minutes for $110) or a Chuan back, neck and shoulder massage (30 minutes for $95).
  • Get an All-Out-Diva Pedicure ($60) at Dashing Diva to treat your feet after walking all over the festival.
  • And if you still feel like eating after the festival, there’s the Hat‘s infamous chili cheese fries.

Maybe if I could get a friend to split that hotel room it won’t be too bad. Thinking, thinking.

Giveaway!

Highlights of LA Street Food Fest Summer Tasting Event

Nguyen Tran of Starry Kitchen by Caroline on Crack

Nguyen Tran of Starry Kitchen sporting a banana costume and a big smile.

Back in February of this year, the first LA Street Food Fest took place: 30 food trucks, a donation-based cash beer and wine bar and over 10,000 attendees. Suffice it to say, a lot of the food truck fans in attendance weren’t happy, complaining of lonnng, slowww-moving lines and a too-small venue. But being the savvy business woman that she is, co-founder of the event, Shawna Dawson didn’t get defensive, but rather she listened.

This past Saturday’s LA Street Food Fest Summer Tasting Event not only took place in a wayyy larger venue, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, but restricted attendance to 5,000 and organized the food trucks by placing them in space-saving booths. There was also now room for two beer gardens, an ice cream social, live music as well as a tequila bar and a rum bar. And even the 85-degree day was taken into consideration as tents were placed on the bleachers in the Bowl so attendees could take refuge from the oppressive sun. Add to that that general admission was $45 and included EVERYthing and this was a cheapskate foodie’s paradise.

I was lucky enough to be one of four bloggers chosen by Shawna to do an hour of live Tweeting at the event so I not only got VIP access to the event but sat in the press box overlooking the Bowl while scouring Twitter for interesting Tweets from the attendees. But cooler still was not having to wait in long lines for the drinks.

Unfortunately I spent more time getting drinks in that VIP hour and not enough time making a run for the more popular food trucks like Grilled Cheese Truck and Manila Machine. By the time I realized I should eat, those lines were already intimidatingly long. So I just jumped in manageable lines like the ones for Dogtown Dogs, Fresh Fries, Komodo, Pal Cabron, Starry Kitchen and Tamales Elena. Was not disappointed at all.

If I paid for my entry, I probably would have been more persistent in trying to get to the more popular trucks but as it was I was just hungry and wanted to get as many tasting-size portions as I could in my belly. My plan worked as I was full by the time my shift started at 6. Huzzah!

Highlights of the day include:

  • The #5 Camarena tequila cocktail by Michel Dozois of Neve Ice was spicy and refreshing, perfect for the sultry day.
  • Scoring two yummy Dark & Stormys in one shot at the Sailor Jerry Rum table. Other folks later in the day had said they were disappointed by the drinks here, but I lucked out. Maybe it’s because I got mine early?
  • Seeing Starry Kitchen owner, Nguyen Tran, sporting half a banana costume, an “Enjoy our balls in yo mouth” sign and a huge smile.
  • Getting a free refreshing oxygen blast from Bliss Spa Hollywood. Unfortunately it was too hot and sticky for the freebie massage.
  • Running into a bazillion blogger friends: Lindsay, Zach, Julie, Elise of LAist; Shauna of The Minty; Daniel of Thirsty in LA and more
  • The Minty’s Shauna telling Mayor Villaraigosa to move aside so that she could get a picture of Susan Feniger. Ha! Susan felt bad so asked the mayor to join her for a second photo.
  • Sharing live Tweeting duties with bloggers Kelsi of StyleSmith, Josie of Uncouthgourmands, and Sarah of Your Daily Thread.
  • Seeing my Tweets 6 feet tall! OK, I may be exaggerating. However tall they were on the Jumbotron.
  • Getting a bird’s-eye view of the action in the Bowl via the press box.
  • Shawna Dawson in action. The woman was calm, cool and collected on the walkie talkie, even with people pulling her every which way.

I had SO. Much. Fun at this food fest, but I realize my experience might have been unique. What did you think of the event?

OMGBren

The winner. She's the one in the back.

If you left your comments and did everything I asked for, your entry to my contest to win VIP tickets to the sold-out LA Street Food Fest Summer Tasting Event was counted. So the lucky person who gets two VIP tickets to the food truck lover’s paradise this Saturday is @omgbren! Congrats, Bren Lee Gomez! Have fun and I hope to run into you at the event.

And thanks to everyone who participated in the contest. I wish I had more tickets to give away, but alas two’s all I got.

LA Street Food Fest Founders Shawna Dawson and Sonja Rasula by BoudoirRougePhoto.com

LA Street Food Fest founders Shawna Dawson and Sonja Rasula by BoudoirRougePhoto.com

*****CONTEST IS CLOSED*****

With only four days until the LA Street Food Fest at the Rose Bowl, I’m sure you’ve heard all about it by now. That you get to eat food from over 60 LA food trucks, enjoy live music at an outdoor concert, partake of an ice cream social, shop the Unique LA Marketplace, explore the tequila and mezcal tasting and indulge in the open bars featuring Sailor Jerry Rum and Camarena Tequila. I know, it’s pretty awesome and it’s definitely the must-do this weekend if you’re a fan of food trucks, nomminess and tasty cocktails.

But if that’s not enough to get you champing at the bit, I’ve got more good news for you that isn’t even published on the event’s site yet but has been confirmed by Shawna Dawson, co-founder of the LA Street Food Fest.

Skilled mixologists Michel Dozois (Neve Ice) and Devon Espinosa (Tasting Kitchen) have created special cocktails — a couple for the VIP hour and two more for general admission — just for the occasion.

VIP Hour Cocktails:

  • #5 (by Michel) – Camerena Reposado, freshly squeezed lemon juice, chili slices and fresh cherries
  • Camarena Fresca (by Devon) — Camarena Silver, Lime, St. Germain topped with sparkling lemonade

General Admission Cocktails (both by Michel):

  • Los Pelomas – Camerena Reposado, fresh grape fruit juice, simple syrup and a splash of soda
  • Mexican Spice — Camerena Silver, fresh squeezed lime juice, agave nectar and a strawberry

Also, Sailor Jerry Rum will offer the thirst-quenching Arnold Palmer and its signature Dark & Stormy made with spicy ginger beer. Perfect for a warm summer day.

So if you’ve already bought your tickets you’re probably very happy right now. But if you haven’t yet, you procrastinator, I’m sorry to say that all the general admission tickets have sold out as of this morning.

If you don’t mind splurging a bit and getting in early there are still a few VIP tickets available. At $65 a person, you get entrance into the event an hour and a half before everyone else, access to the VIP parking lot, those two bonus cocktails and special food items plus a surprise guest on stage. Not too shabby, and if you want to get in the event, VIP is the only way to go.

That is unless you win the pair of VIP tickets (worth $130) I’m giving away! That’s right, one lucky crackhead will get to attend the LA Street Food Fest in style. Lucky!

For your chance at the tickets all you have to do is the following:

  1. Leave a comment below with your email address (so I can contact you if you win) and your Twitter handle as well as which food truck you’re looking forward to trying at the fest.
  2. Tweet this: I’m hungry, @carolineoncrack! Gimme VIP tix to @lafoodfest! http://bit.ly/d3w3gZ
  3. And lastly become a fan of (aka Like) my Facebook page.

**You have to do all of the above for your contest submission to be valid.**

Contest ends Thursday at 7pm PST. And at 1pm PST on Friday the 23rd, Ill plug the entries into the randomizer, pick out a winner and notify you.

Good luck, all! By the way, if you don’t win this time, make sure to buy your tickets online as they won’t be sold at the door.

The Edison happy hour is gonna make you do math by giving you 40% off house cocktails, well and select beer and wine by the glass. At least they have nosh like vegetable panini and chicken wings for a straight-up $5. BTW, don’t forget to tip your bartender. Just because the drink is cheap doesn’t mean you should be.

Friday, June 25

Grease Sing-a-Long in the Hollywood Bowl
OK, who doesn’t know all the words to “You’re the One That I Want”? Man, I LOVE this movie. John Travolta was so hot and Olivia Newton-John was rockin’ her extreme makeover. Grab your friends, a bottle of wine and a picnic basket and sing your heart out at this fun Bowl-tastic sing-a-long. Frenchy will be hosting the evening! BTW, I’ve always wanted pink hair thanks to her.

Bring a picnic basket and a blanket and stake out a spot on the grass in the Rose Bowl. Live performances by The Deadly Syndrome and Warpaint.

Foodie Fitness’ Urban Hike in Orange County
Join me and Foodie Fitness, aka H.C. of LA/OC Foodventures, for a trek through the OC. Actually H.C. will be walking the entire length of Beach Boulevard from La Habra to Huntington Beach (21 miles!). I’ll just join him for the last 6-10 miles before he reaches the final destination: Don the Beachcomber for a prix fixe menu with tiki drink flight! It’s free to join, you just pay for your own food and drink. Hope to see you there!

  • Starts at 7am at Whittier and Beach in La Habra (map). Look for the Asian dude with glasses and a big backpack.
