2012 New Year’s Eve Parties With Open Bars

Cheers by Caroline on Crack

Cheers, 2012!

Don’t want to worry about keeping track of your bar tab for New Year’s Eve? NYE celebrations featuring open bars is definitely the way to go. And then you won’t have to remember to close out your check at the end of the night! Fortunately there’s a nice selection of parties going off this Saturday, ranging from a casual wallet-friendly beer fest to casino night in Havana.

By the way, remember to be safe this NYE. You don’t want to start off 2012 with a DUI! Take the Metro (which is free) or call a cab. The LAPD will be out in full force.

The Eveleigh’s NYE Roaring ’20s Soiree — $30 Open bar 10-11pm
1920s seems to be the theme to many a NYE party this year. This one on Sunset features a ’20s-inspired cocktail menu created by the great Dave Kupchinsky. Open bar isn’t all night, just 10-11pm, but you get a complimentary midnight champagne toast and live jazz music. Dress code: ’20s cocktail attire.

Free-Flowing Taps: Blue Palms Brewhouse’s New Year’s Eve Celebration — $55 Open taps
The beer lover’s NYE party. Open taps til 2am, including specialty kegs for the event, an open “call” bar and a midnight champagne toast. There will be passed appetizers but the kitchen will be taking regular food orders as well. Lobster mac & cheese! Not bad for $55 ($65 at the door). Plus the bar will stay open til 3am after the 1:30am last call to give you time to sober up. Aww, so nice!

Los Angeles New Years Eve 2012 – White & Black(out) Ball — $75 Open bar
Party down in a historic Santa Monica landmark. You have to dress in black and white attire for it though. Here you get an open bar, champagne toast at midnight, two floors of live music AND they promise giveaways all night.

J Lounge’s Midnight in Paris — $80 VIP Open bar
At this 1,000-capacity 1920s-Parisian-themed blowout there will be four bars, three dance floors, a photobooth to commemorate the evening, a three-course dinner and gogo dancers. Your VIP ticket gets you the open bar, champagne toast and VIP lounge access.

Tony’s Darts Away’s New Year’s Eve Feast and Party — $95 Open bar and feasting
This party is a great deal considering it’s all the vegan/non-vegan food and California craft brew you can consume for $95. Not to mention the commemorative NYE TDA glass you get, reserved seating and potential raffle prices.

The It Pick: LACMA’s ’20s Soiree$85 – $150 hosted pre-Prohibition cocktails
This sounds like THE party to hit up for New Year’s what with speakeasy shenanigans, pre-Prohibition-style cocktails, cigars, burlesque and an 18-piece orchestra. If you get your ticket through Thrillist Rewards you’ll also score LACMA’s annual MUSE membership in addition to VIP treatment. At midnight this party one-ups all others with its champagne toast which is accompanied with a fireworks display. Since tickets are limited you have to dress to impress. Diamonds and pearls, Betty Boop!

Caulfield’s Rooftop Party — $100 Open bar ($150 at the door)
This swank Beverly Hills restaurant has a special dinner for NYE but what’s been overlooked is its rooftop party atop the Thompson Beverly Hills where there’s an open bar from 9pm to midnight. RSVP with rsvpthompson2012 [at] gmail.com. If you want the whole she-bang of dinner and rooftop party access tickets are $175 a person. You can also upgrade to table service or, if you travel with an entourage, a large cabana for you and friends for $2,000.

More Quality Booze for Your Buck: Harvard & Stone New Year’s Eve Bash — $100 Open bar with craft cocktails
This bash at Harvard & Stone sounds like you’ll get more than your money’s worth what with the variety of booze at your disposal for just a Benjamin. Indulge in H&S’s well-crafted cocktails as well as cocktail punches, American craft beer and bottomless champagne. PLUS, live music and a DJ!

MyHouse NYE 2012 — $100 VIP Open bar
A Hollywood “house party” where you can sip on cocktails made straight from their “kitchen” and dance in the living room to DJ Orator. If you’re into SBE, paparazzi, Kim Kardashian gossip, then this is the fete for you.

W Hollywood NYE 2012 — $100 Open bar
Dance all over the W Hollywood. Each venue will feature different music: Living Room (Top 40), main room (hip hop/R&B) and Delphine (House).

Le Prestige New Year’s Eve 2012 — $120 VIP Open bar
At the El Rey, this strictly enforced dress-to-impress party has a premium open bar which specifically says “including but not limited to Grey Goose, Tanqueray, Bacardi, Patron, Johnny Walker Black, domestic and imported beers.” Dumbfoundead and his band will host and do a mini performance.

NYE at Wilshire — $125 Premium open bar
For those who skipped out celebrating NYE in Vegas this year, maybe this Santa Monica restaurant-turn-casino will do. The $125 admission includes a premium open bar and $200 in fake casino chips to play with. What’s your pleasure? Craps, Blackjack or Roulette? Dress code: suits and evening gowns, cuz it’s swank like that.

Las Palmas Avenue 2012 New Years Eve Block Party — $150 Premium open bar
Sceney Hollywood clubs join forces. For $150, it’s open bar all night for you and a midnight champagne toast as well as access to the VIP balcony which has its own separate bar. There you can rest your tootsies between dance stops at the three clubs which will be playing different music — Premiere (House), Las Palmas (Hip Hop) and Angels & Kings (Rock). Each one will feature their own countdown.

SkyBar’s Shaken Not Stirred — $175 Open bar
At this James Bond-inspired party, guests will sip on martinis while placing their bets at the casino tables. Dress code: Black tie optional.

La Descarga’s Havana Nocturna — $200 Open bar
You know this Havana-inspired rum bar will do up NYE in style. Space is limited so it won’t be too crazy. Enjoy the open bar and six courses of passed appetizers and desserts. For entertainment take in the nine-piece Latin orchestra and burlesque dancers or try your luck at blackjack, roulette and craps. The three biggest chip holders at the end of the night will receive prizes. Dress code: Formal 1920s gangsters and dames.

Official Maxim Black & White New Year’s Eve Affair — $225 VIP open bar
Ring in the new year in the recently renovated Chinese Theatre Grauman’s Ballroom. VIP access gets you an open bar and entry to all levels of the theatre which includes the VIP lounge and the red carpet photo op area. DJs Eric Cubeechee and Romy Ancona will be spinning some danceable mashups. And apparently there’s a “big surprise live act coming your way, too.”

Honorable mentions: These aren’t open bar events but they do offer some fine drinking.

Big Bar — Want to drink around the world without leaving your bar stool? This little Los Feliz drink hole will feature a new specialty cocktail ($10 each) to celebrate each timezone hitting 2012. Ring in the new year with Berlin by toasting a Husker Du (vodka, Aperol, lemon, bitters) and cheers L.A. in 2012 with a Historic Core (Rittenhouse bonded, Lairds bonded, Chartreuse, Dolin, Angostura).

Neat — For something more low-key, this Glendale bar will have champagne toasts at nine and 12 as well as a live band. And you can order Chinese take-out at the bar.

This Halloween Weekend: Narnia at La Descarga, Candy & Wine Pairing, Extreme Tim Burton

I LOVE Halloween. Candy, scary movies, costumes — now that’s a good time right there.

Thursday, October 27

Werewolves of London Halloween Hotel Package
Partying in WeHo for Halloween? Grab a suite at the London. The hotel is doing a special Halloween package for the holiday now through November 1. Room rates start at $365 and you get two cocktails from the Halloween Witches Brew menu, an overnight parking spot, breakfast at Boxwood Cafe Breakfast Table and, since you’ll probably be out getting into shenanigans the night before, a late 2pm checkout.

  • Through November 1.  Starting at $365. London, 1020 North San Vicente Boulevard, West Hollywood (map). Reservations: (866) 282-4560

Friday, October 28

HallowedVine: Candy and Wine Pairing at Vintage
Enjoy Halloween candy like a grown-up: with a wine pairing! Vintage Enoteca has paired Halloween faves like candy corn and smarties with Viognier and Muscat Blanc. Hmm, what does the sugar blues paired with intoxication feel like I wonder? Other pairings include Raisinets & M&Ms with Merlot, Snickers & Junior Mints with Grenache Noir.

  • Friday-Monday. $25. Vintage Enoteca, 7554 W. Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles (map). (323) 512-5278.

La Descarga’s Narnia Halloween 2011
A rum bar turned Narnia wonderland for Halloween. La Descarga will be transformed into that storybook land with burlesque dancers and the house band putting scenes from the story to musical life. There will be guest DJs and live music by Saint Motel. Best part is that there will be a super premium open bar with Halloween cocktails and punch bowls. Only thing is that there is a 125-person max and naturally costumes are required.

  • Friday and Saturday. $100. La Descarga, 1159 N Western Avenue, Los Angeles (map). Reservations: narniahalloween[at]gmail.com.

Glow Ultra Lounge’s Halloween Costume Ball
I admit it, the one thing that caught my eye today about this party at the marina is the dessert candy bar. For $20-$30 you get hors d’oeuvres and a costume contest with a $300 grand prize. Drinks aren’t included but they have “cheap drink specials.”

  • 8pm-2am. $20 advanced, $30 door. Glow Ultra Lounge, 4100 Admiralty Way, Marina Del Rey (map).

Villains Tavern’s and The One Eyed Gypsy’s Dark Carnival II
This sounds like it’s going to be an epic party: 12 live bands on the outdoor stage , a food court, eight punchbowl spirits with Milagro Tequila and Sailor Jerry’s Rum, and two outdoor bars. If that’s not enough fun for you, there will also be Foosball and Giant Jenga, Tarot card and palm readings, photobooth AND snacks like the infamous bacon caramel popcorn as well as cotton candy. Pfew! A free Haunted Shuttle will transport party-goers from the two venues which are just a mile apart. A portion of the proceeds will go to Sunset Free Clinic.

  • Friday 7pm-1am and Saturday 12pm-1am. Free admission. Villains Tavern, 1356 Palmetto Street, Downtown (map).

Saturday, October 29

Pumpkin-palooza at Blue Palms Brewhouse
Pumpkin ale gets a bum rap from beer snobs but leave it to Blue Palms Brewhouse to pick some tasty ones for its pumpkin beer event, like 2010 Beer Valley Jackalope Imperial Pumpkin Porter Ale, Dogfish Head Punkin and Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin, in addition to fall treats like The Bruery’s Barrel-Aged Autumn Maple and Midnight Sun Treat. The event will also have pumpkin-focused food like pumpkin quesadillas and smoked pumpkin seeds!

  • 2pm. Blue Palms Brewhouse, 6124 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood (map). (323) 464-2337.

Halloween Horror and Hooch at Neat
If you don’t win my giveaway for the exclusive Halloween party at Neat on Sunday, get in on Saturday for the public blowout. $10 at the door gets you a Dirty and Dangerous cocktail or Wychwood Brewery beer. There will be a DJ to keep you boo-gying as well as a costume contest for what I’m told will be some “kickass prizes.”

  • 9pm. $10. Neat, 1114 N. Pacific Avenue, Glendale (map).

Sunday, October 30

Tim Burton Exhibit’s Open for 38 Hours Straight at LACMA
The Tim Burton Exhibit at LACMA draws to a close but in celebration of what has to be the director’s favorite holiday, the museum will run the exhibit for 38 hours straight! If you haven’t visited it yet, Halloween AM would be the perfect time as tickets are half-price from 12am to 9am.

  • 10am Sunday to 12am Tuesday. LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

Nightmare on Elm Street and Eagle Rock Brewery at Barnsdall
Man, I love scary movie nights, especially scary movie nights with great brews to drink. Barnsdall is doing a special showing of Nightmare on Elm Street (filmed at our local Marshall High) and Eagle Rock Brewery will be providing the beer while City Sip pours the wine. And munch on fare from food trucks Heirloom LA and Border Grill truck.

  • Doors open at 5pm. $25. Barnsdall, 4800 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

Monday, October 31

Halloween Makeup Makeover at Ciel Spa
Is doing your own makeup the hardest part of your costume? Have the pros do it at Ciel Spa in the SLS Hotel. The spa has partnered up with Makeup Mandy, “eyelash bar to the stars” and will be offering lashes for $30, hair extensions like feathers and bling for $12 and full face makeup starting at $180.

La Descarga’s Fall Cocktail Menu Debuts: Ghost Salt, Tamarind Syrup & 100 Bottles of Rum

Kenny of La Descarga by Caroline on Crack

Bartender Kenny presenting the Martinique Smuggler

It’s always a sultry night in La Descarga no matter what the thermostat says outside of the Hollywood rum bar. And yet, the Cuban-themed venue has debuted a new fall cocktail menu this week. Unlike usual seasonal cocktail menus at other cocktail bars, this one doesn’t really pay any mind to which ingredients are in season at the farmers market. Rather, inspired by classics, tropical concoctions and the LD bartenders’ boozy dreams, this new menu features an array of delicious drinks that will transport you to more tropical climes. And what makes this LD menu different from all others in the past? LD’s GM Steve Livigni said, “The biggest change on the menu is probably the fact that all of the new drinks were developed by the staff here at LD, not Pablo and I, under the guidance of head bartender Kenny Arbuckle.  Kenny did most of the drinks but Meghan Malloy and Armando Conway contributed as well.”

Here are just a few highlights off the menu that I was able to try last Thursday.

L.A. Lupe by Caroline on Crack

L.A. Lupe: Leblon Cachaca, St. Vincent's coconut, Velvet Falernum, lime juice, tonic

This coconutty concoction had made an appearance on the La Descarga menu before and due to popular demand it’s back. With the coconut spiced up with cloves, ginger and cardamom and the cachaca this tasted like a sexier, lighter Pina Colada and was my favorite cocktails of the evening.

Blood & Samba by Caroline on Crack

Blood & Samba: Cachaca, Carpano Antica, Cherry Heering, OJ

Another favorite, even a play off the classic Blood & Sand but Scotch is replaced with Cachaca for a sweeter, quaffable cocktail. Even LD’s GM and mixologist Steve Livigni counts this among his faves.

Onbeat by Caroline on Crack

Onbeat: House Spirits 100% Barley White Dog, mango-basil syrup, lemon, Bitter Truth Lemon Bitters

Bartender Kenny created this tropical drink with housemade mango-basil simple syrup which works beautifully with the malty barley white whiskey.

Circumnavigate by Caroline on Crack

Circumnavigate: Blanco tequila, tamarind syrup, Bitter Truth Xocalatl Mole Bitters, lime, ghost pepper salt

I had wanted to try this intriguing cocktail first thing but Kenny said that the ghost pepper salt used in the mix has a tendency to wipe out one’s palate. So I saved it for the last drink of the night. Here, the hottest salt in the world isn’t used to rim the glass a la a margarita. THAT would be crazy caliente. So Kenny threw it in the tin with the other ingredients where its spiciness was diluted but still apparent in every sip. I’d say this is a bucket list kind of cocktail where you try it for its unusual, exotic ingredients more than anything.

Hit the jump to see what else is on the menu.

Old faves like Hemingway’s Daiquiri and Tapping the Admiral remain but the list is smaller now, 16 as opposed to 20 drinks. However, the rum menu has grown to 100 and now includes Angostura, Plantation, Ron Abuelo and Rhum Clement rums.

And with more cocktails comes more party time with live music and dancing also now going off on Wednesday nights with live Salsa and vintage Latin music by Christian Moraga and the Conganas.

Friday, May 6

Sipping on The Clooney at Lago
In honor of the most handsome man in the world’s birthday (sorry, bf!), Locanda del Lago in Santa Monica created The Clooney cocktail. Sounds very bitter with its use of Oro Blanco grapefruit, blood orange, Aperol but maybe the No. 209 Gin and St. Germain will help. The cocktail, which will be available Friday through Sunday, is priced $8 a glass and $20 a liter. Could be just the thing to get Mom: Clooney!

Saturday, May 7

Kentucky Derby Viewing Party at the Los Angeles Athletic Club

This Weekend: Manila Machine Wine Pairing, La Descarga Feast, $8 Drago Cocktails

Another gorgeous weekend. What have you got planned?

Thursday, January 20

Buy Tickets for Moveable Feast at La Descarga
This amazing-sounding food event isn’t til January 30 but figured I’d give you a heads-up now before it sells out since there is limited space. There will be Cuban-inspired appetizers by Moveable Feast chef Meg Hall and a special cocktail created by La Descarga’s own Steve Livigni just for the event. And before you think this is your one chance to show up in Lazy Sunday clothes at LD, think again. Cocktail attire only.

  • Tickets $50 for Sunday, January 30 event. La Descarga, 1159 Western Avenue, Hollywood (map).

Wine, Dine and Style at Studio DNA
My favorite salon is kicking off a special weekly event tonight where you can drink wine and mimosas and enjoy food truck fare while getting your beauty treatment. Every Thursday night (and Saturday afternoon), three food trucks will arrive to feed the hungry, beautified masses. Trucks tonight include Greens on Wheelz, Shrimp Pimp and The Hungry Nomad. There will also be a Bumble & Bumble blowout sale at 6pm.

  • Studio DNA Santa Monica, 902 Broadway Avenue, Santa Monica (map). Appointments: (310) 451-3200.

Drago Centro Debuts Winter Cocktails for $8
Score $12 cocktails for only $8 tonight at Drago Centro’s reveal of its new seasonally inspired drinks. Out of the eight cocktails, the Smoke on the Horizon with dark rum, Drambuie, Carpano Antica and mole bitters and the January Jones with Appleton Rum, demerrara syrup, cinnamon bitters, butter and star anise sound intriguing.

  • 5pm. Drago Centro, 525 S. Flower Street, Downtown (map). (213) 228-8998.

Sunday, January 23

William Friedkin Double Feature: Sorcerer and The Exorcist
Even though it was made in 1973, The Exorcist holds its spot atop my list as the best horror film. And even though I am not familiar with Friedkin’s Sorcerer, I’d be willing to see it since the director is slated to speak between the two films. Get to ask him questions!

  • 7:30pm. $11. Aero Theatre, 1328 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica (map).

Dine LA Restaurant Week Starts
Restaurant week is back, a great way to get you off your couch and out enjoying what our fine city has to offer. Restaurant week spans January 23 to January 28 and January 30 to February 4. Prix-fixe lunches are $16, $22 or $28 and dinners are $26, $34 or $44. Hmm, where to go, where to go?

Manila Machine Filipino Food and Wine Pairing at Domaine LA
One of my favorite food trucks, Manila Machine, the first Filipino food truck, is joining wine shop Domaine LA to create a unique pairing of Filipino food and French and Italian wines.

Here’s the tasting menu with pairings by Domaine LA’s Whitney Adams having and Jesse Brawner:

Tonight: La Descarga Debuts New Winter Drink Menu

La Descarga's Steve Livigni by Caroline on Crack

La Descarga's Steve Livigni fixes up a really tasty Daquiri.

CORRECTION: The menu launches tomorrow night! La Descarga in East Hollywood debuts its new winter drink menu! Of course the classics and some crowd favorites remain, like Hemingway’s Daquiri and Tapping the Admiral, which LD owner Steve Livigni says is “now barrel aged for two weeks in whiskey barrels and served neat, exponentially better.”

Sadly, however, no more Brisa de Oaxaca or any other mescal drink on the list for that matter. But there is a total of 10 classic cocktails and 11 house cocktails to choose from.

Here are some compelling options:

  • The Castilian: Bacardi Anejo, Peychaud bitters, sugar, Aguardiente rinse
  • The Jam Session: Rhum JM Blanc 80 Proof, lemon juice, honey syrup
  • The Golden Triangle: Battavia Arrack, Averna Amaro, Gran Classico, angostura orange bitters
  • Imperial Prince of Wales: Hennessey VSOP Cognac, Benedictine, Cassia rum bitters, sugar, sparkling wine
  • L.A. Lupe: Leblon Cachaca, lime juice, St. Vincents Coconut Goodness, Velvet Falernum, tonic

Time to throw on a purty dress and hit my fave rum bar!

La Descarga
1159 Western Avenue
Hollywood, California 90029 (map)
Reservations recommended, call (323) 466-1324 or do it on the site.
