10 Things I Learned at the 2nd Annual LA Craft Beer Crawl

Beer Chicks by Caroline on Crack

Beer Chicks introduce their brand-new downtown beer store, 8th Street Bottle Shop.

Yes, I still wanted to hold a grudge against 213 Downtown for banning me from Schmeven Schmand all those years ago. But there comes a time when a girl has just gotta tell herself, “Oh get over it already.” And when you throw in craft beer, the Beer Chicks, a 7-bar beer crawl and a brand-new downtown craft beer store, well that makes it all the more difficult (and silly) to hold a grudge.

I was invited to the 2nd Annual LA Craft Beer Crawl which meandered around Downtown LA through bars that are primarily known for their cocktails. The Beer Chicks had curated the taps which before had been stuff like Stella Artois and they invited renowned craft breweries like Taps, Stone Brewing, Craftsman and Firestone to spread the gospel of good beer to the event’s attendees.

Las Perlas Bartender by Caroline on Crack

Chelada coming right up!

Unfortunately I couldn’t stick around to enjoy the whole crawl, which went on til 8pm, since my ‘rents were in town, but I made a good show of it. With my beer buddy Lindsay of LAist we ran from bar to bar, trying to enjoy as much of the exclusive pours during the VIP hours as we could. Starting off at Golden Gopher, we checked out the Beer Chicks’ new beer store, 8th Street Bottle Shop (which is now open) and then enjoyed Drakes Aroma Coma and Cismontane‘s coffee-infused Citizen. Afterward it was off to 7G for Ommegang Aphrodite, then Las Perlas for the Raul Yrastorza’s Dusty Road Chelada which featured Uncommon Brewers Siamese Twin Ale. Since the food trucks weren’t coming out til 3pm and we were starving, we braved the wait (and drunk Lotharios) at Cole’s across the street where we shared some garlic fries with Stan of Drink Eat Travel and those wacky Noble Ale Works guys.

Wrapping up the crawl Linds and I adjourned to Cana for the Maui Brewing beer float with banana ice cream and Maui Coconut Porter and ran into LA Weekly‘s Pulitzer-Prize-winning food writer Jonathan Gold “holding up a wall” and answering culinary questions for $1. (Apparently Cana’s Allan Katz put up the sign over JGold’s head as a joke.) Needless to say, I asked a bunch and found out that no, LA Weekly won’t have a JGold cocktail event this year and that the Varnish is his fave spot for grabbing a cocktail.

Now you’d think it would be almost impossible to learn and drink a whole lotta beer at the same time, but it’s not! Here are 10 other things I managed to pick up during the crawl:

1. The Beer Chicks’ 8th Street Bottle Shop is priced competitively. Christina Perozzi did a lot of comparative shopping to come up with the pricing for her bottles which she says is priced lower than Whole Foods.

2. The beers at the bottle shop are basically categorized by style and then alphabetized. Prices are displayed under each bottle.

3. The employees manning the shop will be knowledgeable enough to help you pick out a beer for any occasion or dish.

4. According to Beer Chick Hallie Beaune, Cole Haan makes heels PERFECTLY comfortable for beer crawls.

5. I haven’t been single for awhile but that move when a guy stretches as an excuse to put an arm around me? STILL not sexy.

6. The distance from Golden Gopher to Las Perlas is actually not as far as it seems, only half a mile!

7. Jonathan Gold actually prefers wine (first) and cocktails (second). Beer? Not so much.

8. Untappd users now don’t have to wait 10 minutes to check in between beers. Crucial during beer crawls and beer fests.

9. You know how Eagle Rock Brewery has a women’s beer forum that meets every third Wednesday of the month? Well, Christina will be speaking at one such forum there soon so stay tune.

10. VIP tickets are $20 more than gen admission and absolutely worth it for the exclusive pourings and short lines. (Of course I got a media pass but believe me, worth it for the elbow room.)

Gold Standard 2011: Eating Spree at the Petersen Museum

Jitlada's Jazz by Caroline on Crack

Jitlada's Jazz making it "Thai people hot."

Those first 30 minutes at LA Weekly‘s Gold Standard 2011 yesterday was an eating spree. Yes, I only had half an hour — afforded to me by a media pass — to take pictures and eat and drink as much as I could of the 40 or so food vendors at Jonathan Gold’s annual food event before the flood gates were opened at 1pm to the general public who had lined up in a long, serpentine queue in the Petersen Automotive Museum. I had suffered through the first Gold Standard event in 2009 and didn’t want to be shut out again by the clusterf*ck of foodies or prematurely sold-out food booths — issues that, frankly, prompted me to steer clear of last year’s event.

Drago Centro's foie gras parfait by Caroline on Crack

Drago Centro's foie gras parfait.

So I ran around snapping photos of Loteria Grill‘s tacos de lengua, Nickel Diner‘s bacon maple doughnuts (which apparently went well with the bourbon next door),…hey, Bulleit bourbon…no, focus! Guelaguetza‘s tamal de mole Amarillo…ran past A-Frame‘s Fine Print cocktails and kettle corn with my hands as blinders to outside where I allowed myself to snatch up Park’s BBQ and then to Manila Machine for the lumpia Shanghai with pork belly and pineapple adobo.

There, I tried chatting up my peeps while Chef Greenspan of the Foundry on Melrose yelled loudly from his booth across the way. He laughed and projected to the crowd as if he were on the Iron Chef. In any case, the Manila Machine folks were thirsty in the warm sun so I went to fetch them A-Frame cocktails. After dropping those off it was once more unto the breach. Drago Centro’s chef de cuisine Ian Gresik handed me a foie gras parfait with beef croutons saying he had four of those for breakfast this morning. I was so famished I shrugged off that pang of guilt and scooped a dollop into my mouth. Hm, creamy and rich, but I was still hungry.

Then there were the Vietnamese crepes from Susan Feniger’s Street. Meh. Fortunately Mozza‘s nommy Mozza Caprese with fresh burrata perked me back up. Would have been nice to follow that up with whatever Krissy Lefebvre was serving up at the Ludo Bites booth (Chef Ludo just had back surgery so couldn’t be there), but I didn’t want to bother trying to penetrate the wall of people. Instead I grabbed a pot pie from Good Girl Dinette across the way and a not-so-impressive cocktail shot made with Moon Mountain vodka.

Bricia checking out the event by Caroline on Crack

Guelaguetza's Bricia checking out the event.

Later I ran into ol’ friend John of Social Domain who introduced me to Jitlada‘s owner Jazz — so adorable and humble even if she was telling us about the celebrities who have been popping up at her Thai restaurant. Apparently Natalie Portman stopped by pre-pregnancy. While John grabbed some extra hot sauce to make his Crying Tiger dish “Thai people hot,” I dug into the vegetable curry. OMFG it was STILL too spicy. Fortunately the Singha Beer booth was just next door so a tall cool lager soothed the burn a bit. When that wasn’t quite enough, a follow-up glass of Domaine Carneros sparkling helped.

The whole middle alley of the event was dedicated to wines provided by the Wine House. I shied away from all that since wine usually puts me to sleep, and was kind of disappointed that there weren’t as many cocktails as there seemed to be in the first Gold Standard. But I guess they were saving those for JGold’s annual cocktail party with Zocalo at Union Station. Ah well. At least there was Bulleit Bourbon, Babita’s sangria and A-Frame’s delicious Fine Print with rum, hibiscus, falernum, like and orange bitters. By the way, props to A-Frame for having a seemingly bottomless batch of cocktail.

By 2pm Jar was already sold out and packed up so festival goers discarded their plates on its empty table. Soon the Foundry followed (missed out on the grilled cheese sandwich!) as well as Mo-Chica and Ludo Bites. But I wasn’t too peeved by that since I had had my fill for the day, enjoying food fest favorites like Starry Kitchen’s chicken curry, Mozza’s caprese, Akasha’s jam selection, Guelaguetza’s tamales and Park’s BBQ.

Mattatouille and FoodJeTaime by Caroline on Crack

Bloggers Mattatouille and Food Je T'Aime enjoying wine alley.

And it was fun running into Tweeps like @Mattatouille, @StreetGourmetLA, @MidtownlunchLA, @JulieWolfson, @SauceLA, @NomsNotBombs and @MyLastBite. I also got to congratulate Krissy of Ludo Bites on her and Ludo’s new show on Sundance and chatted with Akasha Richmond about her upcoming tequila dinner as well as her daughter Amrit’s social media successes. And Celestino Drago and Ian Gresik kept me company while I waited to see if I won anything from the Heal the Bay raffle (nope!). Yeah, extra schmoozy.

But the icing on the cake at the end of the day was finally introducing myself to the big man himself, Jonathan Gold, who I had previously been too shy to go up to. At the end of the day, he seemed happy with the event and talked about how strange it was to have a camera crew following him around for the documentary they’re doing on him. We spoke briefly about cocktails and then he was gone, posing in someone else’s picture.

I surprised myself by staying until the end of the event, having made up my mind beforehand that I was just going to stay for an hour or so to take pictures. But the good friends and good food made it difficult to tear myself away. What a truly fun day. Really glad I stuck around.

This Weekend: Open Bar, Zombie Cocktail Party, Sangrita Revolution

Lots of drinking to be done this weekend! More so than usual.

Thursday, March 3

Meat! An Art Show Opening Party Featuring Alie and Georgia and Cocktails
It’s all about meat at this unusual art show which features the meat-focused works of Carlos Ramos, Myke Chilian and  Richard Lee, to name but a few. But also my girls, Alie & Georgia, cocktail vloggers for Food2, will be mixing up their infamous McNuggetinis for the occasion. I heart them! The exhibit runs through March 17.

  • 7-10pm. Meltdown Comics, 7522 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

Tequila Ocho Sangrita Party with the Bon Vivants at Hemingway’s Lounge
Celebrate the Sangrita Revolution with Tequila Ocho and San Francisco’s Bon Vivants. The tequila maker’s 2009 Plata, Reposado and Anejo will be paired with traditional and nontraditional sangritas, much like the ones I had at Ammo a couple of years ago. Hemingway’s bartender Alex Straus will be mixing up special cocktails like the Del Rio — Ocho Plata, Fino sherry, elderflower liqueur, and orange bitters — for $6. All other Tequila Ocho drinks will be half priced!

  • 8-10pm. Hemingway’s Lounge, 6356 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood (map).

Saturday, March 5

Open Bar at Fat Face Fenner’s Fish Shack in Hermosa Beach
An open bar for three hours! Yup, all you have to do is RSVP…and drive to Hermosa Beach. Don’t forget to bring a designated driver. Your DD can indulge in the New England Clam chowder while you get your drink on. Ocean view and outdoor patio. Hopefully the weather will make it a lovely experience.

  • 7-10pm. Fat Face Fenner’s Fishack, 53 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach (map).

Sunday, March 6

Gold Standard 2011
It’s the third year for JGold’s food fest which features all of the Pulitzer Prize winning food writer’s favorite restaurants like Jitlada, Waterloo & City, Manila Machine and Guelaguetza. And you know there will be wine, beer and spirits to quench your Jitlada burn. Awesome bonus? A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit Heal the Bay.

  • 1-5pm. $60. Petersen Auto Museum, 6060 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

Tuesday, March 8

Hungry Cat’s 6th Anniversary: Drink Deals
Hungry Cat in Hollywood wants you to get fat this Tuesday as it celebrates its 6th anniversary with half-priced draft beer and $6 specialty cocktails.

  • 5:30pm to close. Hungry Cat, 1535 N. Vine Street, Hollywood (map). (323) 462-2155.

The Walking Dead Rise at Vertical Wine Bistro
ZOMG I LOVE this zombie-focused TV series! So you know I’m super excited that the Pasadena wine bistro is celebrating its DVD release with a zombie cocktail party which, for $35, gets you two Walking Dead-inspired cocktails, “fleshy” bites (steak tartar, grilled blood sausages, blood orange tapioca pudding) and a chance to win a Walking Dead Season 1 DVD! There will also be cocktails as well as wine and beer flights available for purchase. And some of the Walking Dead cast will be there. I’m tempted to dress like a zombie and show up.

  • 7:30-9:30pm. $35. Vertical Wine Bistro, 70 N Raymond Avenue, Pasadena (map). Reservations: (626) 795-3999, (323) 850-3030.

Westward, Ho! Eastside Eateries Opening up Westside Locations

Matthew Kang of Scoops Westside by Caroline on Crack

Matthew Kang of Scoops Westside

I’m so happy that more well-renown Eastside establishments are opening up shops on my side of town. First, Intelligentsia made it over to Venice and now the restaurants listed below. At this rate, I won’t have to leave my hood, ever! Eh, a girl can dream…

Bulgarini Gelato in Venice ( Summer 2011): This Altadena gelato shop which is known as the best gelato in all of Los Angeles County is planning to open up a second location in Venice! Mmm, goat’s milk gelato. N’ice Cream on Abbot Kinney will have some stiff competition.

Hungry Cat in Santa Monica (Early 2011): This seafood-focused eatery which gained popularity at its Hollywood location seems like a natural to take over the old Brass Cap spot off PCH in Santa Monica. Tourists will love its beachy location and seafood-loving locals its less-touristy surroundings to the Lobster’s off the pier. My only concern is parking around that area sucks, but at least it’s closer. And yay to another spot in SaMo to enjoy tasty cocktails.

La Guelaguetza Westside (TBD): Adorable entrepreneur Bricia Lopez has said that she plans to reopen the Westside location of La Guelaguetza. She’s taking suggestions for names on it but refuses to call it “Bricia’s.” In any case, according to the JGold, she’d like it to be an Oaxacan supper club. I’d just be happy to not have to brave dastardly Western Avenue anymore just to get to her delicious Oaxacan dishes.

Scoops Westside (Early Fall 2010): Matthew “Mattaouille” Kang has taken it upon himself to open up the Westside branch of this much loved ice cream shop. Fortunately for me (but not for my waistline), it’ll be a stone’s throw from my new apartment. He’ll offer up Tai Kim’s exotic flavors as well as have dedicated ice cream cups for regulars. He got me a huge cocktail glass. Hee! This Scoops will also have free WiFi and an Intelligentsia coffee program. Affogato, anyone?

Starry Kitchen in West LA (TBD): OK, this one seems like it’s still up in the air pending a space on Sawtelle but how amazing would that be. Admittedly I haven’t had the chance to check out SK in its downtown location but have enjoyed the bites I did manage to get my hands on like at the Eat My Blog bake sale earlier this year and the Street Food Fest.

Wurstkuche in Venice (TBD): I love this Arts District sausage-and-beer restaurant but not enough to brave downtown traffic for. Thank goodness it’s taking over the old Air Conditioned Supper Club on Lincoln. It’ll be perfect for the Anglophiles from the Santa Monica area and the craft beer loving Westside hipsters.

Everyone will be dressed up oh-so elegantly. It’ll be like Blogger Prom except with a higher entry fee, wayyy more cocktails and probably less bloggers.

By the way, if you’re under 30, you qualify for the Young Professionals’ Rate of $125. Lucky!

The tap room opens at 4 and the truck gets there at 7. Trying to figure out which sandwich would go with which beer will be fun. The Cheesy Mac & Rib with Eagle Rock’s Solidarity? The Manifesto with the Brie Melt?

Saturday, October 9

Zocalo Public Square and Jonathan Gold’s 2nd Annual Cocktail Party at Union Station
What does Jonathan Gold, celebrated and award-winning LA Weekly food reviewer, have to do with cocktails you say? Apparently enough to wield his power and gather LA’s popular bartenders under one roof at the Union Station for this very fancy must-do cocktail party. Tipple from the best like Comme Ca, Providence and Rivera! If you’re 30 years old and under (but over 21 obviously) you qualify to get the Young Professional discount, $125! (Regular price is $185). So line up your designated driver and dust off your cocktail attire. Hope to see you there!

CicLAvia
I’ve always fantasized what LA would be like if we removed the cars. If you have, too, you’ll love this car-free event, CicLAvia, which takes over 7 miles aka 45 acres of downtown streets where Angelenos can bike, run, stroll, skate, boogie, walk dogs, etc. without fear of the four-wheeled beasties. Pedestrians can explore the city streets and check out local shops, restaurants, food trucks and more while enjoying live music and the Indian Summer night, which I hear will be nice and balmy.

  • 10am-3pm. Free. From Heliotrope and Rosewood to Boyle and 4th (map of events).

LA Beer Week: Beer Float Showdown II
Food GPS’s tasty annual event is back and it’s bigger than ever. This time instead of just two beer bars facing off, you’ve got four! Yup, Boneyard Bistro, Ladyface Alehouse, Simmzy’s and Tony’s Darts Away are all competing for the title of Best Beer Float in LA. Each team will make a single float while all attendees (that would be you) get to taste each one and then vote on their faves! Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door with 50% of proceeds going to Share Our Strength, a charity that works to end childhood hunger in the U.S. and Canada.

  • 5:30pm. $25-$30. Verdugo Bar, 3408 Verdugo Road, Los Angeles (map).

Whist at The Viceroy Santa Monica Kicks Off its Savor Sundays
Savor Sundays at Whist are back. The family-style menu by Executive Chef Tony DiSalvo is available for nine weeks with three courses going for $35. There will also be housemade beers available for purchase.

  • 5:30-9pm. $35, $15 for kids 12 and under. Whist at The Viceroy, 1819 Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica (map).

If you missed the first week of dineLA’s Restaurant Week, you still have one more chance at it. From October 10 through the 15th, diners get to indulge at certain LA restaurants for affordable-ish prices. If anything I always figured this was a great way to try that restaurant I’ve always been meaning to go to. The dineLA meals are available in three price categories: Deluxe Dining is $16 for lunch and $26 for dinner; Premier Dining is $22 for lunch and $34 for dinner, and Fine Dining is $28 for lunch and $44 for dinner. 2nd Annual Korean Barbecue Cook-off and Soju Mix-Off

LA Korean Barbecue Cook-Off by Caroline on Crack

Plates of fun at Korean Barbecue Cook-Off

Of course you want to go to the Korean American Coalition’s 2nd Annual Korean Barbecue Cook-Off this Saturday, August 7 in Koreatown. Come on, it’ll feature the top KBBQ restaurants in LA, like Park’s BBQ, Soowan Galbi and Ham Ji Park and sexy Chef Ludo and not-so-sexy Jonathan Gold will be among the judges who crown the best LA galbi (marinated bone-in beef ribs), galbi (marinated boned-out beef ribs), pork ribs and bulgogi (marinated sliced sirloin).

And, no, you’re not just going to stand there watching Ludo and JGold lick the barbecue sauce off their fingers. You, too, will get to try out the grilled offerings at $5 a plate (vouchers must be purchased at the event with cash only). Plus there will also be an eating contest (secret ingredient to be announced), a beer garden, and thankfully vendors to cool you down like Scoops ice cream, Coolhaus ice cream truck and Sprinkles Cupcakes.

For cocktail fans, the special bonus is that this year will feature a soju cocktail competition where L.A. bartenders will compete to make the best Koreatown-inspired drink. Hmm, what might those taste like? I’d tell you but the cocktail recipes are kept confidential until the event.

However, I will tell you that the competitors include Fred Warner of La Buca (formerly of The Association), Josh Goldman (formerly of the The Dining Room), Daniel Eun of The Varnish, Joel Black (formerly of Comme Ca) and Jameson Rhyme of Bottega Louie. Who will you root for?

The guy with the best KTown cocktail-making skills will win $300 and a $100 kbbq gift card and their cocktail will be featured at the KBBQ after party at Cafe Bleu for you to enjoy from 8pm to close.

In any case, this is definitely a summer event not to be missed. What could be better than ‘cue on a hot day? Just make sure to pack lots of Wet Naps.
