Fuku Burger LA’s Chef Mags on How To Do a Fuku Bomb

Fukuuu bommmmmb! by Caroline on Crack

Bombs away!

How hard could it be to do a Fuku Bomb, you ask? Fuku Burger‘s sake bomb is demonstrated here by the Asian burger joint’s own Chef Robert “Mags” Magsalin. The new Asian fusion burger joint, a takeoff on the uber popular food truck in Las Vegas, just opened up shop on Cahuenga Boulevard and is becoming popular for its unusual burgers which use ingredients like pickled red ginger, wasabi mayo and Furikake. But also its sake bomb is attracting some attention, especially from gangs of friends taking a break from bar hopping and nightclubbing in the area.

Here, the ever charming Chef Robert “Smell My Neck” Magsalin takes us through the steps of how to successfully complete a Fuku Bomb. Mind you, he did this five times so I could get a good shot. Such a trooper.

Setting up the Fuku Bomb by Caroline on Crack

Step 1: Set the pint of beer on the table, not too close to the edge though. Lay the chopsticks across the top of the glass. Then set the shot glass of sake on the chopsticks.

Step 2: Position yourself before the armed Fuku Bomb with fists at the ready in front of the glass.

Step 3 of Fuku Bomb by Caroline on Crack

Step 3: Slam your fists down on the table so that it jolts the chopsticks into dropping the glass into the beer. Not too hard, you don't want to upset the glass. Just enough to topple the shot glass. Careful, there may be some spillage.

Step 4 of Fuku Bomb by Caroline on Crack

Step 4: Drink up. Popular way is to guzzle it down as fast as you can but to that I say, what's the hurry?

Good times. The restaurant has an OK beer menu from which to choose your brew to bomb, be it Firestone or Sapporo. But for straight beer drinking, let’s face it: Anywhere within walking distance of Blue Palms Brewhouse on Hollywood Boulevard just can’t compete. Still, not too shabby here. And figure in that happy hour is every day from 3 to 7pm with 2 for 1 beers, $1 Fuku-bombs and $1 sides and par-tay!

As for the burgers themselves, I was pleasantly surprised. I figured this whole Japanese-twist-on-a-burger thing was mere gimmick and that for sure the sandwiches would be overly sauce-y but fortunately I was wrong. At least the burger I tried during a hosted meal wasn’t bad at all. It was the uber popular #2 egg burger which is made with a free range Angus beef patty and Furikake, wasabi mayo and teriyaki and then topped with fried onion strings and a fried egg. The patty was tender and juicy, tasting fresh and of high-quality. And the sauces served to make me salivate like crazy while the onion strings provided a nice contrasting texture. It may not be a foodie favorite but it is perfectly awesome as guilty pleasure food.

If burgers aren’t your thing there are also items like the crispy panko-encrusted chicken sandwich and a deep-fried Naga Dog. But whatever you get, don’t forget to order up a side of Jazz fries, too, if you want to destroy your diet in a spectacular way. That stuff is crack. Garlic fries topped with brown gravy and, yes, “crack sauce.” Fortunately, not too salty but just enough where you can’t eat just one.

All in all, since the restaurant is open til 4am, it’s the perfect place to grab some after hours drunk food.

Tip: Fuku Burger is working on doing secret menu items like they do for their food truck. These will only available to those who follow their Twitter so keep an eye open for that.

More pictures of Fuku Burger after the jump.

7 Reasons To Love SmithHouse Tap & Grill in Century City

Beer Flight by Caroline on Crack

Beer flight! My favorite!

Finally, another reason to visit Century City, other than the mall! Across the street in the old Kula space is new sports bar/restaurant SmithHouse Tap & Grill by Curtis Nysmith (Capitol City). Yeah, I was skeptical of it at first, too, especially since I was not a fan of Capitol City. But when word got out that SmithHouse’s drink menu was created by the crème of the cocktail crop and that there were also 120 beers on tap, well, things were looking up.

Sure enough, after an impromptu meeting with some friends at the new restaurant, which was quiet on a Monday night, I’ve decided that I’m really loving SmithHouse and would like to make it a regular stop on my way home from work. Why? Because of these seven reasons:

1) First thing’s first: A cocktail menu created by top mixmasters Jason Bran and Damian Windsor of West Hollywood’s Roger Room with Simon Ford, Pernod-Ricard brand ambassador and a well-respected bartender. Are you kidding me? Even the drinks which feature flavored vodkas like in the Cantaloupe Caipiroska with Absolut Wild Tea Vodka, cantaloupe and lime and Smitty’s Cider with Absolut Orient Apple Vodka, apple juice, lime and cinnamon are sure to change any cocktail snob’s (my) mind about the nightclub staple. Sure, the bartenders’ skills here might be not up to par with the likes of the Roger Room guys but the Bitter Lady cocktail I had still came out beautifully…even if my dining companion didn’t like his Whiskey Sour.

The Bitter Lady is a great way to soothe away the ills of the day.

2) 120 taps…well, 113 if you don’t want to count PBR, Budweiser, Pacifico, Stella, Bud Light, Coors Light or Amstel Light, which I don’t. But they have many winners like North Coast’s Old Stock Ale 2011, Firestone DBA, Allagash Curieux and St Bernardus Abt 12.

3) $10 beer flights with five tasters! I always say that beer flights are the perfect way to try a bit of everything without having to fear you’ll be stuck with something you hate. SmithHouse has five themed beer flights to choose from: Belgian, Californian, Eastside, European and The Fruit Basket with fruit-infused/-flavored beers. The beers are served in mini mugs and carried out in a wood tray. Special delivery!

Cheddar Crunch Burger by Caroline on Crack

Oh, to eat meat again.

4) Beer cocktails and beer floats. With 120 beers, it makes sense that they offer not only half and half beer cocktails like the Black and Tan (Bass and Guinness) and Greatness (Lost Coast Great White and Guinness) but beer floats. Choose between three lambics and a chocolate stout to go with your vanilla ice cream. Sure, not as many choices as one would have hoped but still nice to have that option.

5) Free valet! Since the restaurant is not located in Century City Mall but across the street, it can be tough to find parking nearby. Fortunately I was able to score parking at one of the meters but I like the idea of free valet as backup. Plus, when you valet you can text them when you’re paying your bill so that they have your car ready by the time you exit the restaurant!

Corn Brulee by Caroline on Crack

Cornbread meets creme brulee.

6) Not the same-old, same-old with regards to pub food. I’m not a Top Chef fan like a lot of my blogger brethren so telling me that Top Chef Angelo Sosa is the man behind the menu is a sure way to get me to shrug. But oh what an interesting menu: corn brulee, edamame burger, tuna Reuben melt, and beer fondue. I wasn’t crazy about the too-saucy grilled Tilapia sandwich with Sriracha mayo and spiced onion jam and the Cheddar Crunch Burger elicited an “It’s OK” from the resident burger expert at our table. But damn, that corn brulee which was topped with a corn crumble crust of sorts, which you dig through to get to the creamy corn layer and blueberry compote. And I like that they have some intriguing veg options. Dishes range in price from $9 Caesar salad to the $12 Vintage Burger and $52 for Porterhouse for two.

7) Happy hour is the standard 3 to 7pm on weekdays but beer specials are $3 selected domestic, $4 selected import and $1 off rest of the rail. Cocktails are $5 well and $7 premium. Bar bites are 50% off.

Blog Bite: Lobster Mac & Cheese & $4 Pint Night at Blue Palms Brewhouse

Lobster mac & cheese by Caroline on Crack

How to make your belly happy.

You’ve had a tough day and you really want to treat yourself to make it all better. Best way to indulge? Chow down on the decadent lobster mac and cheese at Blue Palms Brewhouse in Hollywood. Yup, this craft beer bar not only features 24 awesome beers on tap at any given time but it has delicious food to boot! (Click here for their menu.)

Its lobster mac & cheese can be ordered up as a $7 half order or a $12 full serving. But I like to get it as a side (for an additional $2.50) to the veggie burger because, as it turns out, as much as I love the stuff, the side portion is just the right size. The cheese here is so creamy and not too sharp. The cheese-to-pasta ratio is perfect, as there are some places where either the pasta is left swimming in the cheese or, horror of horrors, there’s so little of the good stuff. And naturally, since it’s a sin to have cold melted cheese, it’s best to enjoy your side first. The burger can wait. Arggh, I’m just salivating looking at that picture. The only thing is that the subtle flavor of the lobster is hidden in the cheese. But I still wouldn’t kick this mac n’ cheese out of bed.

In any case, I highly recommend hitting up BPB during its $4 pint night on Tuesdays when you can get ANY beer off the 24-tap list for only $4 through 10pm! That includes the strong Belgian ones that come in tulip glasses! I took advantage of this deal the Tuesday after their 3rd anniversary party when they had a lot of rare and amazing brews left over. Teh awesome! The best beers and delicious mac ‘n cheese? You’ll forget all your worries in no time.

Bacon is definitely a foodie buzz word so no doubt they’ll flock to this bacon-focused brunch which will feature bacon and Nutella panini and a special Bacon High Tea. While you’re indulging in everyone’s favorite meat product, check out the bacon-inspired jewelry in OnchMovement’s Meat-cessories line in the OnchMovement’s “Perfectasy” pop-up shop, which is around through August 31. Wonder if that bacon bracelet smells as good as it looks. There will also be drink specials: $12 bottomless mimosas and $28 bottles of Veuve du Vernay Champagne to quench your bacon-induced thirst.

And the Los Angeles Magazine Winner for Best Cocktail Punch 2011 Is…

Scrabble and punch by Caroline on Crack

The trick is to get triple-word score while drunk off punch.

Los Angeles Magazine‘s Best of LA 2011 issue is currently out on the newsstands and it’s one that’s not to be missed. Not because I was fortunate enough to be asked to contribute a couple of blurbs to it, hee!, but just because it’s usually the issue you’ll end up referring to for years to come as it becomes your reference guide for finding crucial info like who has the best Scotch selection (Daily Pint) and what’s the best wine bar (Barbrix). Plus every Angeleno should have it on their coffee table, nay, they should have issues spanning back many years in their library. Just sayin’.

I wrote up the blurb for Best Punch in Los Angeles (as well as Best Happy Hour — Drago Centro). This of course required that I choose a number of cocktail punches around town and narrow it down to the best. A very difficult task which resulted in many restless nights. Seriously. How could I pick just one? Oh the humanity!  I was able to cull my choices down to the following:

  • In Pasadena, 1886′s fun Champagne Punch with strawberry shrub and champagne and served up in tea pots.
  • Downtown Cana’s Jitterbug Perfume, a heady mix of jasmine-infused Bulleit 95 rye, Meyer’s Legend 10 year, Luxardo Abano, grapefruit, lime and strawberry.
  • Also downtown, Villains Tavern’s Osiris Punch with champagne, rye whiskey, hibiscus, mint, citrus, spices and bitters.
  • In Hollywood, there’s Library Bar’s off-menu Jamaican Waiting Punch with Smith and Cross rum, Batavia Arrack, Meyer lemon peel, sugar, fresh blood orange juice and nutmeg.

Yes, it became very Sophie’s Choice. Each was made by some of the best mixologists in our fine town and all were so tasty but so different from one another. However in the end I chose The Spare Room‘s Late Checkout, a cocktail punch by bartender Naomi Schimek. Not only is it a delicious supersize version of a popular L.A. cocktail, the Medicina Latina, but it came with a very unique experience — board games and/or bowling at the Hollywood Roosevelt’s bar/bowling alley. The venue is really what helped nudged it ahead of its competitors. Where else in Los Angeles can you enjoy a punch bowl with friends in a historic landmark while ruminating over how to get a triple-word score in Scrabble? Love it! Here punch is $60 for a bowl, board games are free and an hour of bowling for up to six friends is $100.

Congrats, Spare Room on winning Best Punch in Los Angeles Magazine’s 2011 Best of issue (and my heart)!

Cheap Punch: On a not-so-random note, if you’re looking for something a little cheaper than $60 punch, The Crescent Hotel in Beverly Hills has Punchbowl Happy Hour Mondays through Fridays 4-7pm where you can score a six-person bowl of market-fresh cocktail punch for $30!

Thursday, May 12

Eagle Rock Brewery Taste of the Nation Benefit at Verdugo Bar
Five Eagle Rock Brewery beers will be on tap at the Glassell Park bar with the $1 of every pint sold going to Taste of the Nation. Take your pick of Solidarity (black mild), Manifesto (wit), Populist (IPA), Yearling (anniversary sour) and Equinox (young sour).

Stark Bar and KCRW’s Good Food Happy Hour
Enjoy happy hour cocktails with Good Food host Evan Kleiman at the Stark Bar. To kick off KCRW’s “Summer of Pie” celebration, the bar will be offering a special Key Lime Pie cocktail for just $6. Friday, May 13

Friday the 13th Double Feature Drink-Along and Beer Pong at Downtown Independent
Eek! It’s Friday the 13th! If you want to chance it and leave your home for the day, why not spend it watching this awesome horror movie, one of my favorites from the ’80s. See ::spoiler alert:: Kevin Bacon, who was actually in this, get stabbed through the throat! And Friday the 13th Part III will naturally be screened in 3-D. So horribly funny.

  • 7pm. $10 advance, $15 door. Downtown Independent, 251 S Main Street, Downtown (map).

Saturday, May 14

BLT Steak’s “Learn How To Throw the Perfect Summer BBQ” Class
Summer’s near, time to fire up the grill! But why not go the extra mile and learn how to do it up with different marinades and cuts of meat, instead of just burgers for a change? At this BLT Steak class, students will not only learn basic butchery and how to grill but will also get to enjoy an outdoor barbecue with wine and beer.

  • 12:30-2:30pm. $80/person. BLT Steak, 8720 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood (map). Reservations: (310) 360-1950.

Cinespia Screens Elizabeth Taylor Tribute: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is simply gorgeous. Day-um! Add to that she stars opposite Paul Newman and oh em gee! But this classic movie which is based on Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play, is more than just its pretty stars but it features a compelling story and great dialogue. Love this movie. It kicks off Cinespia’s 10th year and is a great way to kick off the summer.

  • Gates open at 7pm, movie starts 8:30pm. $10. Hollywood Forever Cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).
