Gold Standard 2011: Eating Spree at the Petersen Museum

Jitlada's Jazz by Caroline on Crack

Jitlada's Jazz making it "Thai people hot."

Those first 30 minutes at LA Weekly‘s Gold Standard 2011 yesterday was an eating spree. Yes, I only had half an hour — afforded to me by a media pass — to take pictures and eat and drink as much as I could of the 40 or so food vendors at Jonathan Gold’s annual food event before the flood gates were opened at 1pm to the general public who had lined up in a long, serpentine queue in the Petersen Automotive Museum. I had suffered through the first Gold Standard event in 2009 and didn’t want to be shut out again by the clusterf*ck of foodies or prematurely sold-out food booths — issues that, frankly, prompted me to steer clear of last year’s event.

Drago Centro's foie gras parfait by Caroline on Crack

Drago Centro's foie gras parfait.

So I ran around snapping photos of Loteria Grill‘s tacos de lengua, Nickel Diner‘s bacon maple doughnuts (which apparently went well with the bourbon next door),…hey, Bulleit bourbon…no, focus! Guelaguetza‘s tamal de mole Amarillo…ran past A-Frame‘s Fine Print cocktails and kettle corn with my hands as blinders to outside where I allowed myself to snatch up Park’s BBQ and then to Manila Machine for the lumpia Shanghai with pork belly and pineapple adobo.

There, I tried chatting up my peeps while Chef Greenspan of the Foundry on Melrose yelled loudly from his booth across the way. He laughed and projected to the crowd as if he were on the Iron Chef. In any case, the Manila Machine folks were thirsty in the warm sun so I went to fetch them A-Frame cocktails. After dropping those off it was once more unto the breach. Drago Centro’s chef de cuisine Ian Gresik handed me a foie gras parfait with beef croutons saying he had four of those for breakfast this morning. I was so famished I shrugged off that pang of guilt and scooped a dollop into my mouth. Hm, creamy and rich, but I was still hungry.

Then there were the Vietnamese crepes from Susan Feniger’s Street. Meh. Fortunately Mozza‘s nommy Mozza Caprese with fresh burrata perked me back up. Would have been nice to follow that up with whatever Krissy Lefebvre was serving up at the Ludo Bites booth (Chef Ludo just had back surgery so couldn’t be there), but I didn’t want to bother trying to penetrate the wall of people. Instead I grabbed a pot pie from Good Girl Dinette across the way and a not-so-impressive cocktail shot made with Moon Mountain vodka.

Bricia checking out the event by Caroline on Crack

Guelaguetza's Bricia checking out the event.

Later I ran into ol’ friend John of Social Domain who introduced me to Jitlada‘s owner Jazz — so adorable and humble even if she was telling us about the celebrities who have been popping up at her Thai restaurant. Apparently Natalie Portman stopped by pre-pregnancy. While John grabbed some extra hot sauce to make his Crying Tiger dish “Thai people hot,” I dug into the vegetable curry. OMFG it was STILL too spicy. Fortunately the Singha Beer booth was just next door so a tall cool lager soothed the burn a bit. When that wasn’t quite enough, a follow-up glass of Domaine Carneros sparkling helped.

The whole middle alley of the event was dedicated to wines provided by the Wine House. I shied away from all that since wine usually puts me to sleep, and was kind of disappointed that there weren’t as many cocktails as there seemed to be in the first Gold Standard. But I guess they were saving those for JGold’s annual cocktail party with Zocalo at Union Station. Ah well. At least there was Bulleit Bourbon, Babita’s sangria and A-Frame’s delicious Fine Print with rum, hibiscus, falernum, like and orange bitters. By the way, props to A-Frame for having a seemingly bottomless batch of cocktail.

By 2pm Jar was already sold out and packed up so festival goers discarded their plates on its empty table. Soon the Foundry followed (missed out on the grilled cheese sandwich!) as well as Mo-Chica and Ludo Bites. But I wasn’t too peeved by that since I had had my fill for the day, enjoying food fest favorites like Starry Kitchen’s chicken curry, Mozza’s caprese, Akasha’s jam selection, Guelaguetza’s tamales and Park’s BBQ.

Mattatouille and FoodJeTaime by Caroline on Crack

Bloggers Mattatouille and Food Je T'Aime enjoying wine alley.

And it was fun running into Tweeps like @Mattatouille, @StreetGourmetLA, @MidtownlunchLA, @JulieWolfson, @SauceLA, @NomsNotBombs and @MyLastBite. I also got to congratulate Krissy of Ludo Bites on her and Ludo’s new show on Sundance and chatted with Akasha Richmond about her upcoming tequila dinner as well as her daughter Amrit’s social media successes. And Celestino Drago and Ian Gresik kept me company while I waited to see if I won anything from the Heal the Bay raffle (nope!). Yeah, extra schmoozy.

But the icing on the cake at the end of the day was finally introducing myself to the big man himself, Jonathan Gold, who I had previously been too shy to go up to. At the end of the day, he seemed happy with the event and talked about how strange it was to have a camera crew following him around for the documentary they’re doing on him. We spoke briefly about cocktails and then he was gone, posing in someone else’s picture.

I surprised myself by staying until the end of the event, having made up my mind beforehand that I was just going to stay for an hour or so to take pictures. But the good friends and good food made it difficult to tear myself away. What a truly fun day. Really glad I stuck around.

More photos after the jump.

Drago Centro Debuts New Winter Cocktail Menu

Violette Femme cocktail by Caroline on Crack

Punk rawk! Violette Femme cocktail.

Los Angeles may be over those lame below-75-degree temperatures but Drago Centro downtown has just debuted its new winter cocktail menu created by Drago Centro’s beverage director Michael Shearin and head bartender Jaymee Mandeville. It features some hits like the comforting hot buttered rummy January Jones and some misses like the mouthwash-green Watcher in the Woods. But cheers to the use of diverse and unique ingredients like blood orange “caviar,” pear puree, Clear Creek Douglas Fir Eau de Vie and Limoncello candy garnish.

Here’s the cocktail menu with some tasting notes scribbled during the media preview:

  • Violette Femme: Real Blanco Tequila, Luxardo Maraschino, creme de violette, Ventura Limoncello, Yuzu. Looks punk rock with purple rim and hot pink of flower. Very floral flavor. A punk rock girl drink.
  • Puro Sangue: Karlsson’s Vodka, Solerno blood orange, honey, blood orange “caviar.” Orange-y, s’OK.
  • Watcher in the Woods: Death’s Door Gin, Clear Creek Douglas Fir, Nocello, lavender, mint bitters. Limoncello candy garnish. Beautiful-looking cocktail, pretty green, kind of like mouthwash. Not crazy about this one, subtle but not a great flavor.
  • Morning Courage: Bols Genever, serrano tincture, celery bitters, beet, lemon, Hawaiian red salt. Very vegetable-y, but not in an appealing way.
  • Smoke on the Horizon: Zaya Rum, Drambuie, Carpano Antica, atomized Sombra Mezcal, mole bitters. Looks like a Manhattan, very bitter.
  • January Jones: Appleton VX Rum, demerara syrup, cinnamon tincture, butter, clove, star anise, hot water. Flavorful, spicy hot buttered rum. An instant favorite.
  • Cusco’s Crown: Campo de Encanto pisco, housemade pear puree, Angostura bitters, lemon. Citrusy in finish, pear flavor very subtle.
  • Unbridled: Laird’s Applejack, Chartreuse Verte, mint, lime.

The cocktails are $12 each.

Another gorgeous weekend. What have you got planned?

Thursday, January 20

Buy Tickets for Moveable Feast at La Descarga
This amazing-sounding food event isn’t til January 30 but figured I’d give you a heads-up now before it sells out since there is limited space. And before you think this is your one chance to show up in Lazy Sunday clothes at LD, think again. Cocktail attire only.

William Friedkin Double Feature: Sorcerer and The Exorcist
Even though it was made in 1973, The Exorcist holds its spot atop my list as the best horror film. And even though I am not familiar with Friedkin’s Sorcerer, I’d be willing to see it since the director is slated to speak between the two films. Get to ask him questions!

  • 7:30pm. $11. Aero Theatre, 1328 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica (map).

Drago Centro’s New Fall Cocktail Menu for $8 Today

Golden Goose by Caroline on Crack

Drago Centro's Golden Goose cocktail

Downtown’s Drago Centro launches its new fall cocktail menu (created by Beverage Director Michael Shearin and Head Bartender Jaymee Mandeville) tonight. So all night tonight, you get a chance to get first taste for only $8. The cocktails here usually run about $12 each.

Here’s the menu with some of my tasting notes as I was able to preview the cocktails last week.

  • Autumn Night’s Dream – Martin Miller’s Westbourne Gin, Crème Yvette, St. Germain, Grapes, Lemon. Lovely gin cocktail, light refreshing, reminds me of purple. Love the garnish of small grapes. Girl drink, but a sophisticated girl drink.
  • Cherry Poppin’ Daddy – Karlsson’s Vodka, Velenosi Vischole, Basil, Honey, Lime foam, “Lime Cherry.” Smells like soap, not crazy about it. Too limey for my taste.
  • Dazed & Confused - Casa Noble Crystal Tequila, Creole Shrub, Cherry Heering, Rosemary, Angostura. Tasty, one of my faves. Tequila is softened.
  • Eponymous - Appleton VX Rum, Cruzan Blackstrap Rum, Orgeat, Lime. Tastes like maple or brown sugar. Taste it through your nostrils. Complex. Reminds me of autumn treat.
  • 5th & Fig - Bertagnolli Grappa, Housemade Fig Syrup, Fresh Orange Juice, Lemon. Good representation of fig. Compliments it nicely. Very drinkable.
  • Golden Goose – Bulleit Bourbon, Fernet Branca, Fresh Cape Gooseberries, Maple Syrup. My fave. SO drinkable, too easy to down. Fernet is very faint. Out of all the cocktails we tried this is the one we almost finished.
  • Greco Roman – Lustau Amontillado Sherry, Luxardo Morlacco, Fee Brothers Rhubarb Bitters. Not my cuppa. Kinda thick.
  • Rimedio del Pazzo – Zaya Rum, Cynar, Sage, White Peppercorns, Fresh Orange Juice, Lime. Even though Cynar is softened here, still wouldn’t drink it. Cool garnish, though, an artichoke heart that was stolen from the kitchen.
  • Sera Toscana – Belle di Brillet Poire Cognac, Benedictine, Brancaia Sangiovese, Ginger. Tastes like a peary sangria. Reminds me of fall leaves for some reason.
  • Smitten With Britain - Tanqueray Gin, Chives, Lime, Fever Tree Tonic. Basically a gin and tonic but made green because of the chives which I don’t really taste.
  • Smokehouse - Laphroaig 10 Yr Scotch, Clear Creek Cranberry, Apfel Korn, Apple, Fee Bros. Whiskey Barrel Bitters, Candied Bacon. The candied bacon reminds me of a scabbed knee, add to that the smoky Band-Aidness of the Laphroaig and you have a bloody, good drink. Perfect for Halloween. Heh.

So the big hits for me were the Autumn Night’s Dream, Dazed & Confused, Golden Goose and Smokehouse. Yummy stuff!

Drago Centro’s People’s Cocktail Winner: Jeni Afuso of Oishii Eats

Jeni Afuso by Caroline on Crack

Winner of Drago Centro's People's Cocktail Contest Jeni Afuso

Thanks to the Drago Centro People’s Cocktail Contest last week, food blogger/photographer extraordinaire Jeni Afuso of Oishii Eats has just added “award-winning mixologist” to her list of accomplishments!

Some may have considered Jeni the dark horse contender in this contest. After all, she was going up against dedicated drink bloggers and cocktail enthusiasts Matt Robold of RumDood, Ron Diggity of Lush Angeles and Chuck Taggart of The Sporting Life Cocktail Community blog and The Gumbo Pages. But it was Jeni’s summery, peachy rendition, the Momo Rye Fizz — her use of Rittenhouse 100 no doubt helped — that won over the judges (me, Shauna of The Minty, Lesley of Tasting Table and Celestino Drago). We felt it was a natural fit for the downtown restaurant’s new summer cocktail menu that debuted the night of the contest.

When asked what inspired her to come up with her winning cocktail, Jeni said, “Summers are meant for muddling fruits and my favorite fruit to muddle are market fresh peaches. Peaches are a perfect match with rye whiskey bringing a great balance of spiciness, sweetness and citrus.  Muddled peaches, rye whiskey, and summers months are meant to be.” Of course, I agree.

Surprisingly, Jeni, whose drink of choice is Corpse Reviver No. 2, is brand-new to mixology. She and her husband started their home bar just last spring thanks to a list of “must have” spirits recommended by a bartender at Bottega Louie. “And from there we kind of went crazy with the inventory.  We started off mixing a lot of vintage drinks at first, with the Ramos Gin Fizz being my first cocktail.  At that first shake, I was hooked,” she said. Lucky for us! For her next cocktail, Jeni says that although her husband is rooting for a Hello Kitty cocktail, she’s just been playing around with Ransom Old Tom Gin.

And no, Jeni doesn’t see bartending in her future. “I know I can’t be a bartender.  My memory is horrible.  For now, it’s fun having friends and family over at our place. My husband and I will make several cocktails a night.  It’s fun and relaxing for us.  We even have a tip jar.  One night our moms left us a $40 tip.  That’s fun enough for me.”

To see other pictures from the contest, head for the jump. There are also videos of Ron of Lush Angeles making his cocktail and Matt of RumDood talking about how he came up with his Dutch Elm Disease cocktail — a tasty, smokey mix of Bols Genever and Scotch.

Drago Centro's Clockwork Orange cocktail

For the past month, Drago Centro has been on the hunt for a new cocktail to add to its upcoming summer menu, conducting a “People’s Cocktail” contest that invited amateur mixologists in L.A. to create recipes around a secret ingredient and submit their winningest undiscovered concoctions. Sneak Preview of Drago Centro’s Springtime Cocktails

Drago Centro's Spring Cocktails

Drago Centro's Spring Cocktails

So yesterday on Twitter, Drago Centro‘s sommelier/beverage director Michael Shearin mentioned how he’s going to debut the restaurant’s new springtime cocktail menu one special night very soon and only charge $6 for each one a la Rivera’s one-night cocktail debuts.

Drago Centro cocktail

"Abito di Lino" cocktail

First it was going to be this Thursday but that had to be pushed back to next Wednesday due to filming. Anyhoo, I had happened to be downtown last night checking out J Lounge’s happy hour  (great food and service but horrible cocktails). But after a very disappointing tequila Manhattan I needed to get a good drink in me right quick. Michael responded to my Tweet for help, “I’ll make you a good tequila Manhattan if you want to stop by.” M’OK!

With estarLA in tow, we made our way over. And that’s when I realized, “Heyyy, maybe Michael can give us a sneaky peek of the spring cocktail menu.” But when we got there he was mum about it…

At first. He couldn’t give us the menu or the names of the cocktails because both are still works in progress. But he was able to make us three of the cocktails from the new menu. No names or fancy garnishes, just ingredients for now. I offered to name the drinks but Michael said they had to be in Italian. So with the help of an Italian/English dictionary I’ve included my own suggestions for names. Heh. To be clear, these aren’t the real names for the drinks, just ones I made up because I was bored. When you check them out at Drago for yourself, just look them up in the new menu by their ingredients.

New spring cocktails:

  • “Fiore de Melo” (Apple Blossom): Woodford Reserve, Pink Lady apples, Cointreau, simple syrup, rhubarb bitters. Taste impression: Very, very light whiskey cocktail. You could taste the hint of the apples and the bourbon but since this was on the rocks, the flavors were almost watered down. This is not a sipping drink but rather a guzzle-it-fast drink for that reason. Michael said that they might just serve the finished product with one big cube of ice which I think would help.
  • “Abito di Lino” (Linen Suit): El Jimador Blanco, White Vermouth, Amaro Mirto, Angostura orange bitters. Taste impression: I loved this one but then again I am a fan of aromatic cocktails. This one is served up in a cocktail glass and was basically the well-made tequila Manhattan I was looking for.
  • “Terre Lontane” (Distant Land): Dewar’s 12-year-old Scotch, cardamom, lemon juice, soda, lemon zest. Taste impression: Another really light whiskey cocktail with a lemony aroma and a hint of spice. But Michael said a lot of the cocktails are light like that to be enjoyed during the warmer weather.

As for the other cocktails on the menu, Michael said that each spirit will be represented so there’s something for everyone.

For sustenance, Chef de Cuisine Ian Gresik brought us out a a small cast-iron pan of gnocchi with sweetbread and English peas. OMG SO good! Buttery with fresh, tender gnocchi. And Pastry Chef Jashmine Corpuz fixed us up a beautiful plate of three arty samples from the dessert menu: Il Budino di Cioccolato and I Bomboloni, which will be transitioned out to make way for the new spring menu, and the brand-new La Torta di Primavera.

La Torta di Primavera

La Torta di Primavera

Naturally I gravitated to the creamy chocolate custard and caramel gelato of the budino as well as I Bomboloni’s small sugared doughnuts, brown butter ice cream and deconstructed apple pie-ness. However, if you’re not a big fan of grapefruit or tart flavors, then La Torta di Primavera isn’t for you. Sure, it had delicate puffs of olive oil cake and nommy avocado mousse but the grapefruit, although very juicy, was too tart for my tastes. Not to say this was a bad dessert. It’s just not my type.

You can look forward to the new spring dessert menu in about two to three weeks.

And if you’d like to sample the new spring cocktails, hit up Drago Centro next Wednesday, April 14 where the drinks will debut for a one-night only price of $6 each.

For a video of Michael making the Terre Lontane cocktail and estarLA’s taste impression of the drink, head for the jump.
