Just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you guys for reading my blog. I couldn’t do this for six years without your support! Enjoy your weekend!

One Night Only: Desserts and Drinks Pairings at Dominick’s
My two favorite things in the world come together on one menu for one night only: desserts and cocktails! Dominick’s mixologist Nikki Sunseri and pastry chef Ann Kirk joined foodie forces pairing sweets with crafted cocktails like a sweet risotto of fresh peaches, raspberries and ginger sauce with an El Matador cocktail of El Jimador Blanco, Crème Yvette, pressed ginger and lemon and orange bitters. But the Valrhona chocolate panna cotta with the Bols Genever Satan’s Whiskers cocktail sounds devilishly delicious! Each of the three pairings range from $12-$15.

  • 6pm-close. Dominick’s, 8715 Beverly Boulevard, West Hollywood (map). (310) 652-2335.

Friday, August 5

Big Bar’s Breakfast of Champions with Plymouth Gin Cocktails
Kick off the weekend with a boozy breakfast: three courses, each accompanied with a Plymouth Gin cocktail. Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about! First course is fruit and pastries; second is your choice of dishes like a smoked salmon stack, chorizo scramble or brioche French toast; and third is dessert crepes. Breakfast will be served in Big Bar’s event cottage in the back so rsvp asap as space is limited!

  • 10:30am-12:30pm. $35. Big Bar, 1927 Hillhurst Avenue, Los Feliz (map). (323) 644-0100. RSVP: events [at] alcovecafe.com.

Saturday, August 6

3rd Annual Korean BBQ Cook-Off
It ain’t summer without BBQ and you won’t want to miss this event which features ‘cue from the best Korean BBQ restaurants in LA. Marvel at the eating skills demonstrated during the Orion Choco Pie eating contest, enjoy craft beer from Beer Belly and Korean Wines and take in the judging for the Top Grill Master Cook-Off. Remember this is a cash-only event so bring lots of it. Entry is free but plates are $5-$15 and beer is $5 a cup.

  • 12-6pm. Free entry, plates $5-$15. South Hobart Street between 7th and Wilshire, Koreatown (map).

Cemetery Screening: Breakfast At Tiffany’s
It’s the 50th anniversary of this iconic movie. And even if you disagree with the casting of Audrey Hepburn as call girl Holly Golightly you must admit she’s absolutely charming on the screen. In any case, grab a carafe of your favorite cocktail to serve up on a picnic blanket. This would make an awesome girls’ night out activity.

  • 7pm. Tickets: $10. Hollywood Forever Cemetery, 6000  Santa Monica Boulevard, Hollywood (map).

Sunday, August 7

Night + Market’s Northern Thai BBQ and Wandering Wine Bar
This buzzy WeHo restaurant recently acquired three sausage grills from Thailand and will be cooking up some regional specials like the Sai Uah (Chieng Rai herb sausage) and Sai Krok Isan (Northeastern fermented pork sausage), which are hand-stuffed, for this special BBQ event. Gorge yourself on delicacies like pork satay skewers in condensed milk, salted beef and catfish tamale. For $29 you get a sausage plate plus three items of your choice. Traveling wine bar Ubriaca LA will sate your thirst with wine to complement the BBQ; glasses will be around $12 each. No reservations required.

  • 5pm. Night + Market, 9043 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood (map).

Dominick’s New Fall Cocktails: Respectable Girl Drinks

Dominick's Southside cocktail by Caroline on Crack

Dominick's Southside cocktail

You’re hanging out with your pallies and they’re looking to you to call the next drink destination. But it’s gotta be something low key, none of this frou-frou stuff. Just because you’re a lady doesn’t mean you dig on the sugar water.

I’m thinking Dominick’s in West Hollywood. They just kicked off their new fall cocktail menu (prices range from $10-$13) last Thursday and even though it was a Rat Pack destination back in the day (what wasn’t?) it presents some respectable girl drinks. Case in point, that fall drink list.

I had the chance to partake last night, walking over to Dominick’s after a swinging shindig at Petrossian West Hollywood. Once I texted fellow Petrossian party-goer Thirsty in LA (aka Daniel) a photo of the Dom’s Manhattan and Pink Elephant, both new cocktails, I was sipping on he said he’d be right over. Soon bloggers Savory Hunter and EstarLA followed, joining us at the back bar on the patio.

Chris Newcomer, Dom’s manager, played our gracious host, trotting over cocktail after cocktail — which were comped — to sate the thirsty group.  Here are some of my fave drinks on the new menu.

Dom’s Manhattan ($13): Rittenhouse 100 Proof Rye, Carpano Antica, Angostura Bitters, Amarena Cherry

Dom's Manhattan

Unfortunately since there seems to be a worldwide shortage of Rittenhouse 100, the bar made do with Old Overholt, which was OK, but didn’t have the kick of the 100. Now, I love a good Manhattan as much as the next girl and this one was decent with a nice balance of vermouth and rye. Yet for some reason it was watery. Manager Newcomer said that the only way that could happen, since the bartender hadn’t shaken it, was if she stirred it too much, which he said she didn’t. So hm. In any case, I wouldn’t kick this Manhattan out of bed.

This Weekend: Fashion Food Truck, N’Awlins Crawfish Boil, Girls’ Night Out

Joseph Brooke from Edison in LA – Part 2 from Shaker Faces on Vimeo.

Is it the weekend already? Awesome.

Thursday, June 3

Los Angeles Magazine‘s Girls’ Night Out
Yes, sadly, I was SO disappointed by Sex and the City 2 and wouldn’t see it again. BUT if you’re an SATC fan and haven’t seen it yet, now’s your chance. At this girl-friendly party, the first 300 attendees to check in will get a FREE pass to see the movie after the event. If you’ve already seen the movie, however, you’ll still want to go for the mini spa treatments, cocktails, Pink Taco finger food, gift bags and music.

  • 6-9pm. Westfield Century City’s Center Court, 10250 Santa Monica Boulevard, Century City (map).

An Evening with Pablove and Intelligentsia
Spend a lovely evening in Venice enjoying an acoustic show by Eulogies and a DJ set by KCRW’s Tom Schnabel while sipping on the best cappuccino in the world. This special event goes to raise awareness about pediatric cancer as well as raise funds for the Pablove Foundation which supports the families of children suffering from the disease. Suggested donation is $10.

  • 7pm. $10 suggested donation. Intelligentsia Venice, 1331 Abbot Kinney, Venice (map). (310) 399-1233.

Friday, June 4

National Doughnut Day
If your fancier palate requires something more than a free Krispy Kreme celebrate this tasty pastry by indulging in BLT Steak‘s warm glazed doughnut with cappuccino ice cream or Culina‘s Bomboloni with honey ricotta, citrus and marmalade OR Hatfield’s Sugar & Spice beignets with Venezuelan chocolate fondue and a preserved ginger milkshake shot. Drool!

Saturday, June 5

Prix-Fixe Weekend at 6 Italian Restaurants
From June 5 through June 20, you don’t have to go to Italy to enjoy truly authentic Italian food. The Italian Trade Commission and Italy-America Chamber of Commerce West selected six L.A. Italian restaurants — Drago, Caffe’ Roma, Il Grano, Il Moro, Locanda del Lago and Valentino — to showcase the best ingredients from Italy. And each one will offer special prix fixe lunch and dinner menus for the occasion. Valentino will feature La Cassatina di Ricotta Siciliana con il Sorbetto di Fichi d’India and Locanda Del Lago has Risotto al Gorgonzola “Dolce Latte” con Barbabietole Rosse e Gialle. Don’t know what they are but sounds fab. Make your ressies through the restaurants’ sites.

Dominick’s Crawfish Boil
Nothing says summer like a good ol’ fashioned crawfish boil. And Dominick’s Chef Brandon Boudet, a New Orleans native, would know how it’s done. Fans of the mudbug will be able to enjoy the crawfish ($7/pound) served with potatoes and corn as well as roast beef po’ boys, oysters on a half shell and Creole-boiled artichokes.

  • 2-6pm. Dominick’s, 8715 Beverly Boulevard, Los Angeles (map). Reservations: (310) 652-2335.
