Last Night at Spare Room’s Boxing Day Social: Bar Tab Winners, Photobooth Shenanigans, Punch Recipe

Cocktail punch by Caroline on Crack

Cocktail punch with Solerno blood orange liqueur

Last night’s boozy Boxing Day Social charity affair at the Hollywood Roosevelt’s Spare Room raised about $2,000 in addition to collecting blankets and clothes for downtown’s Hospitality Kitchen. For the $10 donation at the door, guests were treated to turkey-on-rye sandwiches, Wild Geese Irish whiskey tastings and a Jenga tournament as well as three free-flowing cocktail punches created by hostess and SR beverage director Naomi Schimek. (Hit the jump for the Boxing Day Punch recipe — and for more pictures.)

Naomi also came up with the idea of auctioning off L.A. bartenders and their respective bar tabs. Since it’s usually against policy for bartenders to drink at the bar where they work, the bar tabs were thrown in a hat and then each bartender had to draw one out. Luckily no one pulled out their own tab.

The mixmasters who drew the highest bids were Spare Room’s Lauran September who raised $200 for a date with her at Harvard & Stone and Naomi who was snapped up by both Aidan Demarest (Neat) and the event’s emcee Dan “The Imbiber” Dunn for $200. The trio will be enjoying beers and shots at La Cita. Someone should make a reality show about THAT date!

The significant others of some of the bartenders took the auction as an opportunity to score a budget-friendly date night. Hilary Straus, wife of Alex Straus of Hemingway’s Lounge, won her husband and a $175 bar tab at Baby Blues BBQ for a cool $100. While La Descarga’s Kenny Danger and the Hemingway’s bar tab was won by Kenny’s girlfriend.

The cocktail community turned out in full force to support the charity. It was fun hanging out with fellow cocktail enthusiasts like LA/OC Foodventures and Faux LA Hipster as well as mingling with Georgia of Alie & Georgia and The Savory Hunter. My fave moments of the night had to be tippling that intense cocktail punch made with Salerno blood orange liqueur and getting Dan Dunn, Aidan Demarest and Spare Room co-owner Marc Rose to jump in the photo booth for me. That photo strip is going up on my refrigerator.

If you missed out last night, not to fret. Naomi said that this will be a yearly event so start saving up your cash now. Who knows who will be up for bid next year?

And the Los Angeles Magazine Winner for Best Cocktail Punch 2011 Is…

Scrabble and punch by Caroline on Crack

The trick is to get triple-word score while drunk off punch.

Los Angeles Magazine‘s Best of LA 2011 issue is currently out on the newsstands and it’s one that’s not to be missed. Not because I was fortunate enough to be asked to contribute a couple of blurbs to it, hee!, but just because it’s usually the issue you’ll end up referring to for years to come as it becomes your reference guide for finding crucial info like who has the best Scotch selection (Daily Pint) and what’s the best wine bar (Barbrix). Plus every Angeleno should have it on their coffee table, nay, they should have issues spanning back many years in their library. Just sayin’.

I wrote up the blurb for Best Punch in Los Angeles (as well as Best Happy Hour — Drago Centro). This of course required that I choose a number of cocktail punches around town and narrow it down to the best. A very difficult task which resulted in many restless nights. Seriously. How could I pick just one? Oh the humanity!  I was able to cull my choices down to the following:

  • In Pasadena, 1886′s fun Champagne Punch with strawberry shrub and champagne and served up in tea pots.
  • Downtown Cana’s Jitterbug Perfume, a heady mix of jasmine-infused Bulleit 95 rye, Meyer’s Legend 10 year, Luxardo Abano, grapefruit, lime and strawberry.
  • Also downtown, Villains Tavern’s Osiris Punch with champagne, rye whiskey, hibiscus, mint, citrus, spices and bitters.
  • In Hollywood, there’s Library Bar’s off-menu Jamaican Waiting Punch with Smith and Cross rum, Batavia Arrack, Meyer lemon peel, sugar, fresh blood orange juice and nutmeg.

Yes, it became very Sophie’s Choice. Each was made by some of the best mixologists in our fine town and all were so tasty but so different from one another. However in the end I chose The Spare Room‘s Late Checkout, a cocktail punch by bartender Naomi Schimek. Not only is it a delicious supersize version of a popular L.A. cocktail, the Medicina Latina, but it came with a very unique experience — board games and/or bowling at the Hollywood Roosevelt’s bar/bowling alley. The venue is really what helped nudged it ahead of its competitors. Where else in Los Angeles can you enjoy a punch bowl with friends in a historic landmark while ruminating over how to get a triple-word score in Scrabble? Love it! Here punch is $60 for a bowl, board games are free and an hour of bowling for up to six friends is $100.

Congrats, Spare Room on winning Best Punch in Los Angeles Magazine’s 2011 Best of issue (and my heart)!

Cheap Punch: On a not-so-random note, if you’re looking for something a little cheaper than $60 punch, The Crescent Hotel in Beverly Hills has Punchbowl Happy Hour Mondays through Fridays 4-7pm where you can score a six-person bowl of market-fresh cocktail punch for $30!

Bowling, Cocktail Punch, Connect Four: Spare Room’s Taste of the Nation Benefit

Spare Room pins by Caroline on Crack

Game on!

***CONTEST CLOSED***

You know how I was going on and on about how fun it was to bowl, play board games and drink cocktail punches at the Spare Room in Hollywood? Well, now’s your chance to give it a try. I’m hosting a benefit with SR’s Aidan Demarest there next Thursday, May 26th from 6 to 9pm for Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation, which works to end childhood hunger in America.

It’s going to be a fun night at the stylish Hollywood bowling alley/bar where you can compete in either a bowling tournament or Connect Four tournament for a chance at some awesome prizes like a night’s stay at the Hollywood Roosevelt, a pair of tickets to the June 12th Taste of the Nation food festival, an hour of bowling at SR, and more.

Here’s the breakdown of entry fees and what each gets you:

  • Bowlers, $50: cocktail punches, appetizers, one hour of bowling and chance to win bowler’s grand prize — a night’s stay at Hollywood Roosevelt and a pair of tickets to Taste of the Nation LA — A great deal since it’s normally $100 for an hour of bowling at SR!
  • Gamers, $25: cocktail punches, appetizers, entry fee for Connect Four game tournament and chance to win the gamer’s grand prize — a pair of tickets to Taste of the Nation LA and one hour of bowling at the Spare Room.

Email me at carolineoncrack[at]gmail.com to RSVP for the event or to sign up for a tournament; remember to specify which tournament you want to participate in. We have limited spaces so RSVP asap! I’ll put your name on the list and you pay at the door.

For the non-”athletic-types,” it’s $15 just to get into the event and partake of the passed appetizers and cocktail punches throughout the venue. You can also play the other board games like drunken Scrabble, drunken Jenga or drunken dominoes (just need to leave your credit card for insurance).

A dj will keep you moving and chair dancing while cocktails from the Spare Room cocktail menu will be available for purchase if you require more than boozy punches. Might I recommend the Figgy Smalls with Bulleit bourbon, fig jam, egg white, lemon, bitters and thyme essence? Yessss.

By the way a portion of door proceeds will go to TOTNLA as well as 10% of all liquor sales. Huzzah!

Bonus is that the night’s participants also have the opportunity to purchase Taste of the Nation LA tickets ($100 each) at a discount: $25 off for bowlers and $15 off for gamers and general attendees.

GIVEAWAY: I’m giving away a pair of general admission tickets to the event. To enter to win tickets to this fab event, do the following.

  1. Leave a comment below saying what cocktail you think pairs well with bowling and include your Twitter handle. (There is no right answer; I just like to hear your thoughts on the matter.)
  2. Tweet: “I want tickets to the @TOTNLA Spare Room benefit, @carolineoncrack! http://is.gd/O731qh”

I’ll randomly pick a winner via Random.org on Monday at noon and notify the winner via email. If I don’t hear from you by 2pm that Monday, I’ll draw another winner so check your email!

Blog Bite: Library Bar’s Jamaican Waiting Punch

The Jamaican Waiting Punch by Caroline on Crack

Worth the wait.

OK I just blogged about a bar at Hollywood Roosevelt but this little tidbit I couldn’t keep to myself. You know how the long wait for a well-done cocktail is a necessary evil? Sometimes you have to wait up to 30 minutes to get a good drink. Can be a pain in the ass when you just want to drink already and it’s a busy night and there’s only one guy manning the bar. Fortunately, bartender Matt Biancaniello at the Library Bar came up with an ingeniously simple way to appease the thirsty masses: a cocktail punch.

The aptly named Jamaican Waiting Punch is made up of Smith and Cross rum, Batavia Arrack, Meyer lemon peel, sugar, fresh blood orange juice and nutmeg. It’s a touch smokey and complex and yet drinkable. Matt said that on the busy nights he’ll just serve up cups of this punch so that those waiting for his time-intensive creations won’t mind the wait so much. It usually costs $5 a cup or it’s free if you’re lucky.

The Spare Room: Bowl Like a Billionaire, Drink Like a Sailor

Punch bowl at Spare Room by Caroline on Crack

Punch is the new bottle service.

If you’ve shied away from Hollywood nightlife before because clubbing isn’t your thing, The Spare Room, cocktail bar/bowling alley, at the Hollywood Roosevelt might just be able to entice you over to the blingy side. Yes, they have bowling at what is surely the fanciest alley you’ve ever seen, and that includes Lucky Strikes. Meant to evoke bowling in a billionaire’s living room, there are only two very shiny lanes.

Cost is $100 an hour to rent with up to six players, with the George Esquivel shoe rental included. AND should you forget your socks or want to don something fancy enough to slip the Esquivels onto, the SR actually sells fancy foot coverings in argyle, striped or pom poms at $10 a pair! Pom poms!

Blogger Esther bowling in socks.

But if you’re not the “athletic” type, in the lounge adjacent to the bowling alley, you can take your pick of a variety of board games, a selection that rivals that of a seniors-only cruise. What’s it going to be Scrabble, Connect Four, Battleships or the classics like dominoes, chess or cards? There is no charge to play board games, but you’ll have to leave your credit card at the bar for insurance. For example a lost tile from the Scrabble board will cost you $50. And yes, they count them when you turn the game in.

And Aidan Demarest, SR manager, said that there’s no real time limit for board games. Apparently there’s a couple who comes by every Wednesday who order a cocktail punch bowl and sit and play Scrabble all night. “I don’t even know if they really drink the punch but that’s what they like to do,” he said. Sounds like a lovely way to spend a chill evening! Caution: Aidan’s been known to jump in a game or two, so look out, he’s a skilled Scrabble player and reads the Scrabble dictionary for fun.

As for the punches, of which there are currently seven varieties, you can order them in three sizes: $60 for four to six people, $120 for eight to 10 and $240 for 16 to 20. Aidan said the most popular cocktail punch is Take Fountain, a concoction of Belvedere vodka, Fino Sherry, jasmine green tea, elderflower liqueur, sugar, lemon and orange essence. “It’s like a creamsicle,” Aidan said. However the cocktail-serious usually opt for the spice-intensive Moroccan Bazaar made with Batavia Arrack, 10 Cane Rum, black tea, sugar, lemon, cardamom and nutmeg.

Cocktail punches, originally the drink of British sailors back in the day, have become an economical way for a group of friends to imbibe, provided they can all decide on the same cocktail. “It’s the new bottle service,” Aidan said. But figure that if you ordered the $60 punch bowl for six of your friends it would be only about $10 a person. A regular cocktail at Spare Room costs $14. Split the bowl with a friend and you’ve got the added convenience of not having to get up every time you run out of drink. Just keep in mind that there is a 20 percent service charge, too.

Plus, cocktail punches are created for leisure drinking, with flavors marinating the longer the punch sits. Aidan said that he usually prebatches the punches because it gives them time for the ingredients to intensify. When they’re made to order, they haven’t reached their full potential of awesomeness. My words.

In any case, if you would rather not share your drink, there is a slew of cocktails created by Aidan and his Spare Room bartenders. (Aside: Shout out to bartender Naomi Schimek who is awesome.)

In fact they’ve only just debuted the spring menu featuring three new cocktails:

  • The Spare Room Sling: Encanto Pisco, pineapple, egg white, lime, Pinot Noir
  • The Red Haired Alibi: Inspired by Shirley Temple’s first movie — Belvedere vodka, Cherry Heering, lemon, topped with Chandon Brut
  • Duke for a Day: Inspired by Aidan’s recent trip to France — Hennessy VS, lavender syrup, lemon

But the Figgy Smalls with its bacon-infused Bulleit Bourbon, fig jam, egg white, lemon, bitters, thyme essence will always hold a special place in my heart, from the Great Blogger Barhop of 2011.

By the way, heads-up, I’m working with Aidan on a Bowlers and Gamers benefit night for Taste of the Nation at the Spare Room. We’re talking all of the above and more for a great cause. It’s going to be on May 26th so save the date and stay tune for more details!

Win Exclusive Invite to Table 20′s Cocktail Punch Party With Best LA Bartenders

Matt's Three Faces of Van Gogh by Caroline on Crack

Who's the best bartender in all of LA?

***CONTEST CLOSED***

So I have the skinny on a must-do event for cocktail enthusiasts. It takes place next Monday at Takami Sushi downtown and will feature six of L.A.’s best bartenders and their never-tasted-before cocktail punch recipes. Guests will be able to try all the concoctions (each serving is 4-5 ounces) for free and mingle with fellow boozers.

The bad news is that it’s invite-only and oh-so exclusive with about 100 guests. But the awesome news is that I get to pick five of my lucky crackheads to go!

This party is the grand finale for the Table 20 Best Bartender in LA contest. For weeks before, you were given the chance to nominate your favorite drink slingers in all of Los Angeles. And then my fellow judges and I had to visit the top six contestants and vote for a winner. Well, the party is where it’s all going to go down. The contestants — Matt Biancaniello (People’s Choice winner) of Hollywood Roosevelt’s Library Bar, Joseph Brooke of The Edison, Max Diaz of Cicada Club, Devon Espinosa of The Tasting Kitchen, Dee Ann Quinones of Susan Feniger’s Street and Alex Straus of Hemingway’s Lounge — will be there. Only one of them will be announced as the Best Bartender in LA. BTW, your guess is as good as mine as to who will walk away with the title. And you won’t want to miss it. The tears, the cry of defeat, the roar of victory, the free cocktails!

To even get a chance at an invite, you must already “Like” my Facebook page* (that’s how I know you’re serious about me) and then do the following 1-2 punch:

  1. Post on your own Facebook page: “I want to win an invite from @Caroline on Crack’s Crackheads to next Monday’s exclusive Table 20 cocktail punch party! http://wp.me/pNkdL-1pL” The “@” is to make sure it links back to my page.
  2. Leave a comment on my FB page telling me you did the above so I’ll know. And I’ll check!

I’ll close this contest Saturday, October 2 at 9am, tally up the entries, pick five winners and check their Facebook pages to make sure they posted on them. The five winners will then be notified via Facebook.

Good luck!

* Got this idea from my fellow judge at Vixen’s LA Happy Hours. She’s all smart and stuff.
