Los Angeles Magazine’s The Hawaii Mai Tai Mixoff: Who Makes the Best in LA?

Hawaiian Sunset by Caroline on Crack

Wish you were here?

We’ve still got a long way to go for some consistently warm weather, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start your Mai Tai drinking early. Lucky for you, there’s an opportunity to not only vote for your favorite LA bartender’s Mai Tai recipe but also win a trip to Hawaii, Land of Infinite Mai Tais!

Nine of LA’s best mixologists compete for bragging rights and the title of Master Mixer in Los Angeles Magazine‘s The Hawaii Mai Tai Mixoff, a contest which kicks off today. Where and how do you get involved, you ask? Well, each week for three weeks three mixologists will be featured with their versions of the tropical drink on the LA Mag site and all you have to do is vote for your favorite.

Bonus is that your vote also doubles as an entry into a contest to win a trip for two to Hawaii – airfare, luxury hotel accommodations, rental car, complimentary Mai Tai and tapas at the Mai Tai Bar — as well as an invite to attend the finale mix-off event on February 23 at supperclub. Only one vote per week counts.

So why am I telling you about this instead of keeping it all to myself to improve my chances of winning? Because I’m pretty sure I’m disqualified since I’m actually judging the final mixoff with La Descarga‘s Steve Livigni and Melkon Khosrovian, co-founder and spiritsmaker for GreenBar Collective. Woo hoo! And turns out one of my fave globe-trotting boozers, Zane Lamprey of HDNet show, Drinking Made Easy will be hosting the event. By then the field will be narrowed down to the top three and we have the very difficult task of picking just one winner. Can’t wait.

In any case, who are you going to vote for? Here’s the schedule for which bartenders are competing each week:

  • Monday, January 31 – Sunday, February 6: Bar + Kitchen (Alex Day), La Descarga (Adrian Biggs), Tasting Kitchen (John Coltharp)
  • Monday, February 7 – Sunday, February 13: Cana (Allan Katz), Rivera (Julian Cox), The Spare Room (Aidan Demarest)
  • Monday, February 14 – Sunday, February 20: First & Hope (Naomi Schimek), Library Bar (Matt Biancaniello), The Edison (Joe Brooke)

Table 20 Best LA Bartender Winner Plus Party Photos

Michel congratulates Matt by Caroline on Crack

Neve Ice's Michel congratulates Table 20 winner Matt Biancaniello

As one of the judges of the Table 20 Best LA Bartender contest, having to name just one bartender as “the best” was like Sophie’s Choice…minus the death camp. I mean, I LOVE the final contestants for different reasons. One could work a busy bar without breaking a sweat, another could turn a classic cocktail up on its head with tasty results, another could create delicious concoctions on the fly and yet another had such charisma that I never wanted to leave my barstool. But all six — Alex, Dee Ann, Devon, Joe, Matt and Max — share impressive cocktailing know-how, offer the best customer service and obviously love their craft.

I just didn’t know whom to choose. It wasn’t until I visited each bartender* at their respective bars when one truly stood out for me.

Yes, Hollywood Roosevelt Library Bar’s Matt Biancaniello, who was announced as the Table 20 winner at last night’s party, was my top pick. And here’s why.

1) Excellent customer service in adverse conditions: Granted, each of these bartenders work in popular bars with demanding clientele but Matt was really the only one who I got to “observe unobserved.”

When I visited him at his bar, during the judges’ evaluation process, he was super nice to my friends, Alie & Georgia, who had arrived before I did. Matt greeted them warmly and made sure they were taken care of even though his bar was packed with very demanding tourists. He didn’t know who these girls were and he didn’t know they were my friends, so I felt assured that he wasn’t giving them any special treatment. Suffice it to say, my friends were very impressed with him.

2) Reinventing the cocktail: Matt was the only bartender who took my standard drink order, the Manhattan, and added his own unique twist to it. Instead of just bitters he substituted Cynar which gave it a stronger kick and consequently ruined me for all other Manhattans. After a sip of Matt’s version, the regular Manhattan seemed so plain, too sweet and watered down. He also created this special 2-fer cocktail called “Mad Man” ($15) which is comprised of an Old Fashioned and a Sazerac in a Jagermeister glass. The two cocktails are separated by a brandied cherry. Genius!

3) Expanding the customer’s horizons: After I told him very plainly that I don’t like Cynar, despite its delightful transformation of the Manhattan, he took that as a challenge and made me a Cynar-based cocktail with cassis and passionfruit. But truth be told, even though it was delish on that first sip, its bitter finish reaffirmed my opinion of the artichoke liqueur. But, thanks for trying, Matt!

In addition to all that, one can’t deny his high energy, attentiveness, creativity and affability. All wins. Now if only the parking situation for the Library Bar was better (read: cheaper)!

Anyway, big congrats to Matt, and to all the other contestants. Without you fine folks, my life would be a little empty.

* Due to time constraints, unfortunately I wasn’t able to visit Max and Alex. But Trevor, Table 20 contest organizer, assured me that didn’t count against them in the voting process.

Pinky Vodka Cocktail Contest: 28 Cocktails, 4 Judges, 1 Sexy Winner

Judges before the contest by Caroline on Crack

Judges before the contest.

I’ve had many, many cocktails in my life but never 28 cocktails in one sitting. But when I was invited to judge the Pinky Vodka Cocktail Competition at Nic’s Martini Lounge in Beverly Hills, that’s just what I had to do. Well someone had to pick the “next great mixologist to create a fresh cocktail for Pinky,” a rose-hued vodka made from glacial water and slightly sweet winter wheat that’s distilled five times and then hand blended with violets, rose petals, and 10 (!) other botanicals. The winner of the contest who could successfully create a new fab cocktail with this unusual floral, berry vodka would win an educational prize of $1,000 and a feature on PinkyVodka.com.

Fortunately, I didn’t have to judge these cocktails alone. I had the companionship of three other judges, and good ones: Natalie Bovis of The Liquid Muse, Magnus Waern (champion wine taster and co-creator of Pinky) and Dewey McBride (Southern Wine and Spirits). Plus we were armed with spit buckets, my personal savior here, so really didn’t have to consume one drop…if I didn’t want to.

Judges after the contest.

The recipes for the 28 drinks, which had been whittled down from 50, came from all over the United States, but mostly California. And we had to consider each for presentation, balance (can you taste the Pinky?), ease of serving (can someone make it at home and/or at hot spot bar?) and use of innovative ingredients.

There were many recipes that seemed too similar in nature and a whole bunch that were just too sweet while others used unusual ingredients which ranged from green onions to rosebuds to orchids dripping with syrup.

After about four or five hours of going through all the drinks and deliberating, we finally narrowed down the cocktails to five finalists. Here they are, from 5th to 1st place, including their recipes so you can try ‘em at home. Look for the winner after the jump.

My Pink Foot by Pinky Vodka

My Pink Foot (Pinky Vodka)

5th place — My Pink Foot
By Joshua Pearson, Sepia, Chicago, IL

  • 2 oz Pinky
  • ½ oz Luxardo Maraschino
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • Dash Fees Peach Bitters
  • Drop rosewater

Add all ingredients to iced shaker. Shake and strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with candied rose petals.

(To candy rose petals, paint edible rose petals with meringue powder, and coat with granulated sugar. Let set for 24 hours.)

Anonymous Pinky by Pinky Vodka

Anonymous Pinky (Pinky Vodka)

4th place — Anonymous Pinky
By Matt Wallace, 7 Grand, Los Angeles, CA

2 oz Pinky
¼ Red Bell Pepper, muddled
¾ oz simple syrup
¾ oz lime juice
3 dashes Rhubarb Bitters

Shake, strain over ice in a bucket. Garnish with salt-crusted bell pepper slice.

Pinky Verde by Pinky Vodka

Pinky Verde (Pinky Vodka)

3rd place — Pinky Verde
By Josh Valorosi, Luna Park, San Francisco, CA (last year’s winner)

Although this was crazy spicy and it was a favorite of most of the judges, we didn’t see this as a cocktail for everyone, a trait that the winning cocktail should possess. Plus, who has raw nopal cactus at the ready?

  • 2 oz Pinky
  • 1” x 1” piece of raw nopal cactus
  • 2 x ¼” slices of jalapeño
  • 3 key lime halves
  • ½ oz St Germain
  • Splash of simple syrup
  • Salt/sugar/chili powder/cayenne rim

Muddle cactus and jalapeño with simple syrup. Add ice. Add Pinky, St Germain and key lime juice. Shake vigorously. Serve up in a martini glass with rim mixture. Garnish with triangle of nopal cactus.

Rim: 2 tablespoons of salt/sugar; I pinch each of dark chili powder and cayenne powder.

Peppered Pinky by Pinky Vodka

Peppered Pinky (Pinky Vodka)

2nd place — Peppered Pinky
By Moe Talani, Mexico Restaurante, West Hollywood, CA

I really enjoyed the refreshing quality of this cocktail. So drinkable.

2 oz Pinky
1 small Mexican Lime (diced)
2 oz limeade
Pinch of Pink Peppercorns
Top with Ginger Beer

Pour all ingredients into a highball glass over ice, shake once and top with ginger beer.

And the winner is…

Drago Centro’s People’s Cocktail Winner: Jeni Afuso of Oishii Eats

Jeni Afuso by Caroline on Crack

Winner of Drago Centro's People's Cocktail Contest Jeni Afuso

Thanks to the Drago Centro People’s Cocktail Contest last week, food blogger/photographer extraordinaire Jeni Afuso of Oishii Eats has just added “award-winning mixologist” to her list of accomplishments!

Some may have considered Jeni the dark horse contender in this contest. After all, she was going up against dedicated drink bloggers and cocktail enthusiasts Matt Robold of RumDood, Ron Diggity of Lush Angeles and Chuck Taggart of The Sporting Life Cocktail Community blog and The Gumbo Pages. But it was Jeni’s summery, peachy rendition, the Momo Rye Fizz — her use of Rittenhouse 100 no doubt helped — that won over the judges (me, Shauna of The Minty, Lesley of Tasting Table and Celestino Drago). We felt it was a natural fit for the downtown restaurant’s new summer cocktail menu that debuted the night of the contest.

When asked what inspired her to come up with her winning cocktail, Jeni said, “Summers are meant for muddling fruits and my favorite fruit to muddle are market fresh peaches. Peaches are a perfect match with rye whiskey bringing a great balance of spiciness, sweetness and citrus.  Muddled peaches, rye whiskey, and summers months are meant to be.” Of course, I agree.

Surprisingly, Jeni, whose drink of choice is Corpse Reviver No. 2, is brand-new to mixology. She and her husband started their home bar just last spring thanks to a list of “must have” spirits recommended by a bartender at Bottega Louie. “And from there we kind of went crazy with the inventory.  We started off mixing a lot of vintage drinks at first, with the Ramos Gin Fizz being my first cocktail.  At that first shake, I was hooked,” she said. Lucky for us! For her next cocktail, Jeni says that although her husband is rooting for a Hello Kitty cocktail, she’s just been playing around with Ransom Old Tom Gin.

And no, Jeni doesn’t see bartending in her future. “I know I can’t be a bartender.  My memory is horrible.  For now, it’s fun having friends and family over at our place. My husband and I will make several cocktails a night.  It’s fun and relaxing for us.  We even have a tip jar.  One night our moms left us a $40 tip.  That’s fun enough for me.”

To see other pictures from the contest, head for the jump. There are also videos of Ron of Lush Angeles making his cocktail and Matt of RumDood talking about how he came up with his Dutch Elm Disease cocktail — a tasty, smokey mix of Bols Genever and Scotch.
