This Weekend: Good Food Happy Hour, Beer for a Good Cause, Slasher Beer Pong

Tomorrow drinkers worldwide are celebrating World Cocktail Day and will inevitably get blitzed. Godspeed. This is how LA’s doing it up. But what to do for the rest of the weekend? Here are some suggestions.

Thursday, May 12

Eagle Rock Brewery Taste of the Nation Benefit at Verdugo Bar
Five Eagle Rock Brewery beers will be on tap at the Glassell Park bar with the $1 of every pint sold going to Taste of the Nation. ERB co-founder Jeremy Raub will be on hand to tell you all about why his beer is so good. Take your pick of Solidarity (black mild), Manifesto (wit), Populist (IPA), Yearling (anniversary sour) and Equinox (young sour).

Stark Bar and KCRW’s Good Food Happy Hour
Enjoy happy hour cocktails with Good Food host Evan Kleiman at the Stark Bar. To kick off KCRW’s “Summer of Pie” celebration, the bar will be offering a special Key Lime Pie cocktail for just $6. If that’s not your thing, red and white wine by the glass is available for $5 and you can also get any flatbread with select beer for $12.

Friday the 13th Double Feature Drink-Along and Beer Pong at Downtown Independent
Eek! It’s Friday the 13th! If you want to chance it and leave your home for the day, why not spend it watching this awesome horror movie, one of my favorites from the ’80s. See ::spoiler alert:: Kevin Bacon, who was actually in this, get stabbed through the throat! And Friday the 13th Part III will naturally be screened in 3-D. So horribly funny.

  • 7pm. $10 advance, $15 door. Downtown Independent, 251 S Main Street, Downtown (map).

Saturday, May 14

BLT Steak’s “Learn How To Throw the Perfect Summer BBQ” Class
Summer’s near, time to fire up the grill! But why not go the extra mile and learn how to do it up with different marinades and cuts of meat, instead of just burgers for a change? At this BLT Steak class, students will not only learn basic butchery and how to grill but will also get to enjoy an outdoor barbecue with wine and beer.

  • 12:30-2:30pm. $80/person. BLT Steak, 8720 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood (map). Reservations: (310) 360-1950.

Cinespia Screens Elizabeth Taylor Tribute: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is simply gorgeous. Day-um! Add to that she stars opposite Paul Newman and oh em gee! But this classic movie which is based on Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play, is more than just its pretty stars but it features a compelling story and great dialogue. Love this movie. It kicks off Cinespia’s 10th year and is a great way to kick off the summer.

  • Gates open at 7pm, movie starts 8:30pm. $10. Hollywood Forever Cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

This Weekend: Vendys, Forever Oz, Grilled Cheese & Beer

Yay! I’m so happy I’m in town this weekend. And it’s a good thing, too, because there are LOTS going on.

Saturday, May 15

CitySip LA Home Brewing Class
Times are tough. Maybe you don’t have the money to go out for a night of drinking. So why not learn how to make your own booze at home? Beer guru Alex Macy will be taking you through the steps on how to brew your own beer starting with a basic extract brew. The event is $45 and gets you tastes of 6-8 commercial beers, Two Boots pizza and the know-how to make your own beer. But dress to get wet and dirty. Home brewing apparently gets messy.

  • 1-4pm. $45. 2150 W. Sunset Blvd. Los Angeles (map). Reservations: (213) 483-9463.

The Vendy Awards LA
The Vendys are here! And six of the best LA street vendors are up for the award of the bestest vendor in all SoCal. This Saturday they’ll be judged by a prestigious foodie panel consisting of the Glutster, those Animal guys, Street Gourmet LA and KCRW’s Evan Kleiman. Entry fee to witness this spectacle is $50 which gets you the cook-off food and an open bar of wine and beer. Proceeds from this event will go to protect vendors’ rights.

  • 4-7pm. $50 online, $60 at the door. MacArthur Park, S. Park View and W. 7th Street, Los Angeles (map).

Connect 4 Tournament at West 4th/Jane
Spend an entire afternoon drinking beer and playing an intense round of Connect 4. Get a team of five friends together for West 4th/Jane’s second seasonal Connect 4 tournament where the top three winning teams will get prizes! If you’re not in it to win it, at least the $20 entry fee includes unlimited tap beer for all four hours of the event. Email steven [at] west4thjane.com to confirm your team.

  • 4-8pm. West 4th/Jane, 1432 4th Street, Santa Monica (map). (310) 395-6765.

Cinespia’s First Movie of the Season: The Wizard of Oz
Summer’s here! That’s how we count the seasons in L.A., right? With the arrival of Cinespia’s cemetery screenings. Saturday night’s kickoff movie is none other than cinema classic, The Wizard of Oz. Whip up a thermos of Hurricane cocktails to enjoy on your picnic blanket and maybe play a WoO drinking game. Check out my cemetery screening do’s and don’ts on how to best enjoy the experience. No tall chairs, please!

  • Gates 7pm, movie 8pm. $10. Hollywood Forever Cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

Santa Monica Classic 5K/10K
It’s going to be such a gorgeous weekend why not run a 5K or 10K through the streets of Santa Monica to best enjoy the weather? This annual fun run is a point-to-point course through SaMo that finishes at the Santa Monica Pier. Proceeds from the event go to benefit Heal the Bay. Online registration is closed but you can still register on race day.

Margerum M5 + In-N-Out at Wallys Wine
Don’t be a wine snob. You know you want to check out this wine pairing of In N Out burgers and wine. In fact it’s already been done with great success. This event at Wally’s Wine is $20 per person and includes a glass of the Margerum M5, a burger and a full tasting. There will also be newly released vintages to taste.

  • 1-4pm. $20. Wally’s Wines, 2107 Westwood Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

Hudson House Hosts the Grilled Cheese Truck
Everyone’s favorite food truck, the Grilled Cheese Truck will be making an appearance at the Hudson House. The Redondo Beach gastropub will close its kitchen for the event but you can grab some cheesy melts and enjoy them in the bar along with libations from Hudson House’s beer, wine and cocktail menu. Newly revealed cocktails include the Imperia Pickled Blue ($10) with Imperia vodka, pickled vegetables and blue cheese stuffed olives and a cava cocktail available in blueberry, pear or blood orange ($8). New beer on tap is the chipotle-coffee stout, Black Phoenix.

Hollywood Forever Cemetery Screening Do’s and Don’ts

IMG_8647

Yes, Cinespia just screened its last movie of the season — Rosemary’s Baby — at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, but I thought I’d take this time to reflect on the suggested do’s and don’ts of this popular summer pastime and a definite L.A. must-do. Besides, they may screen a movie for Halloween in which case these will definitely come in handy. Last year’s movie was Carrie and the year before it was The Shining. Ooh! wonder what it’s going to be this time. Coolest thing? Halloween falls on a Saturday this time around! Fun!

DO…

  • Get there at least two hours before the gates open to ensure a great parking spot on the street in addition to a good seat in front of the screen. Especially when we’re talking a popular movie, in which case the line will stretch all the way down the street. I like to plop down on a grassy spot in line and nosh as well as fix up some cocktails and just chat with friends while I wait for the gates to open. Some people use this time to nap, play board games or even just catch up on some reading. Waiting ain’t all that bad.
  • Park on the street i.e. side streets from Gower to Van Ness to avoid the rush to exits in the cemetery at the end of the night.
  • Have your $10 in cash in hand. They say it’s a “$10 donation” to get in but really it’s mandatory.
  • Bring a headlamp or flashlight so that you can ably collect your belongings after the movie. Seems lots of people tend to leave their sunglasses and eyeglasses behind. It’s also handy to have one when you need to visit the porta-potty during the movie.
  • Bring a bottle of booze (your spirit of choice), cups, one mixer (cola or juice to keep it simple) and ice since alcohol is allowed here. People usually bring a low-maintenance bottle of wine, but that’s why cocktails are more special. I had friends bring pina colada Jello shots which were fun and tasty.
  • Have someone run ahead as soon as you pay your $10 at the gate to claim a good spot to view the movie. Works best if they don’t have to carry anything so they can run unimpeded and faster.
  • Set up a portable table on which to enjoy your picnic. So much nicer that way, especially if you’re on a romantic date or you want to set out a buffet for you and your friends. Some people even bring tea lights to set the mood.
  • Take an impromptu tour of the cemetery to kill time before the movie starts. You’ll find Mel Blanc and Johnny Ramone’s graves.

DON’T…

  • Forget to bring a blanket, a warm hat and a sweater/sweatshirt. It gets mighty chilly once the sun goes down.
  • Wear flip-flops. Or if you do, make sure to pack shoes and socks because after the movie the grass is usually very wet and who wants cold, wet feet?
  • Bring a tall chair. If your butt is higher than or as high as your knees it’s too tall and your neighbors will let you know.
  • Show up right before the movie starts and set up your tall chair. If you are going to come late, show your neighbors some courtesy and just sit on the ground. It’s too late for people to adjust to you. EstarLA and I got in a kerfuffle with some rude guys because of this. They didn’t move their seats even when everyone behind them heckled them (asking nicely at first didn’t help). Bastards.
  • Walk on the grass through the graveyard when going on your impromptu tour. The cemetery staff doesn’t like that. Just stick to the paths.
  • Continue to drink once the movie starts. You need to make sure you have plenty of time to sober up before it ends. There’s nowhere to hang out around the cemetery after the event, if you need to kill time.
  • Leave your trash. There are huge trash bins off the grass, on the road, opposite the mausoleum wall.
