Drinking Game for Tomorrow’s Ludo Bites America Redondo Beach Episode

Chef Ludo by Caroline on Crack

Doing shots with Chef Ludo.

Tomorrow, August 23 on the Sundance Channel’s “Ludo Bites America,” L.A.’s pop-up king, Chef Ludo Lefebvre, is taking his cross-country Ludo Bites back to SoCal when he sets up shop in, Casa Pulido, a family-run Mexican restaurant in Redondo Beach. I got a sneak peek of the episode thanks to Sundance and it was the first time I’ve ever seen the show since I don’t have cable.*

And even though I normally shy away from reality shows I couldn’t help but love this one. Not only is it extra cool because I feel like I know Chef Ludo and his wife Krissy from their pop-ups in LA, but they are so charismatic and fun to watch. Sure the show has the usual reality show drama injected in there — this episode, it’s in the form of foie gras protesters and a stubborn restaurant owner — but fortunately they don’t dwell on that too much and the show just flows. Also loved how there are food porn shots of Ludo’s dishes interspersed in the ep during the seating. That sweet guacamole and brownie at the end looked divine!

In any case, if you don’t have cable either, find someone who does and get them to throw a screening party. Since this episode takes place in a Mexican restaurant, you could do a drinking game with shots of tequila. To help you along, I’ve come up with the following drinking rules just for tomorrow’s episode.

Take a shot:

  • Whenever Ludo curses. (Two shots when it’s in French.)
  • Whenever someone rolls their eyes at Ludo.
  • Whenever Ludo speaks Spanish.
  • Whenever Ludo hits something.
  • Whenever someone says, “Biggest Ludo Bites ever.” (Two shots whenever Ludo says, “Biggest Ludo Bites hever.”)
  • When The Glutster or Bricia Lopez pops up on the screen.
  • Whenever the subtitles for Ludo don’t jibe with what he’s actually saying.

Airs tomorrow on the Sundance Channel at 9pm PT/ET. On Sunday the 28th starting at 3pm ET/PT, Sundance will air a marathon of the season followed by “Ludo Bites America: One More Bite,” the look back on Ludo’s culinary tour of the U.S. over the course of this season.

* You can also buy the “Ludo Bites America” episodes on iTunes.

This Weekend: Ludo vs. Greeny Food Fight, 2-for-1 Pop-Up Stores, Chocoholic Buffet

Pig out, get sloshed and shop shop shop. December is when we indulge in all our vices to the nth degree. And I’ve got some to-dos that will help you do just that. By the way, I won’t be doing Carson Daly’s “AMP Mornings” show for the entire month of December. Apparently they’re going to play more music for the holidays. But hope to be back for 2011!

Friday, December 10

Holiday Mingling Soiree at Spanish Kitchen
A night of free wine — red, white and sparkling — plus Mexican appetizers for only $9 (through Goldstar)! Sounds like a fun, cheap way to spend a Friday night. Of course if you’re still thirsty/hungry there will be food items and other wines available for purchase.

  • 7pm. $15 ($9 on Goldstar). Spanish Kitchen, 826 North La Cienega Boulevard, West Hollywood (map).

Oliverios Choco-Sutra Premium Chocolate Buffet Debuts
OK, this sounds like too much chocolate even for me but maybe someone out there is a huuuge chocoholic. If that’s the case, you should check out Oliverio’s new chocolate buffet, where, every Friday and Saturday night they’ll set out a spread of chocolatey goodness including the likes of triple chocolate truffle pizzettas and a white chocolate martini. Date night, anyone?

  • Kicks off on Friday. $28/person, $50/couple. Oliverio, 9400 West Olympic Boulevard, Beverly Hills (map)

2nd Annual Korean Barbecue Cook-off and Soju Mix-Off

LA Korean Barbecue Cook-Off by Caroline on Crack

Plates of fun at Korean Barbecue Cook-Off

Of course you want to go to the Korean American Coalition’s 2nd Annual Korean Barbecue Cook-Off this Saturday, August 7 in Koreatown. Come on, it’ll feature the top KBBQ restaurants in LA, like Park’s BBQ, Soowan Galbi and Ham Ji Park and sexy Chef Ludo and not-so-sexy Jonathan Gold will be among the judges who crown the best LA galbi (marinated bone-in beef ribs), galbi (marinated boned-out beef ribs), pork ribs and bulgogi (marinated sliced sirloin).

And, no, you’re not just going to stand there watching Ludo and JGold lick the barbecue sauce off their fingers. You, too, will get to try out the grilled offerings at $5 a plate (vouchers must be purchased at the event with cash only). Plus there will also be an eating contest (secret ingredient to be announced), a beer garden, and thankfully vendors to cool you down like Scoops ice cream, Coolhaus ice cream truck and Sprinkles Cupcakes.

For cocktail fans, the special bonus is that this year will feature a soju cocktail competition where L.A. bartenders will compete to make the best Koreatown-inspired drink. Hmm, what might those taste like? I’d tell you but the cocktail recipes are kept confidential until the event.

However, I will tell you that the competitors include Fred Warner of La Buca (formerly of The Association), Josh Goldman (formerly of the The Dining Room), Daniel Eun of The Varnish, Joel Black (formerly of Comme Ca) and Jameson Rhyme of Bottega Louie. Who will you root for?

The guy with the best KTown cocktail-making skills will win $300 and a $100 kbbq gift card and their cocktail will be featured at the KBBQ after party at Cafe Bleu for you to enjoy from 8pm to close.

In any case, this is definitely a summer event not to be missed. What could be better than ‘cue on a hot day? Just make sure to pack lots of Wet Naps.

This Weekend: Savor Los Angeles, Sergio Mendes, Chefs Night Out

Wow, we’re in August already? Where did the summer go? Well for the last weekend of July (sigh), you’ve got lots of food fests and sweets. You know where my mind is.

Friday, July 30

Savor Los Angeles
I never get sick of eating sweets and after every meal there’s always room for dessert so I’m SO excited about this Savor event. Guests with insatiable sweet tooths will be able to taste samples from yum purveyors like Babycakes NYC, Frosted Cupcakery, N’Ice Cream and more! There will also be free champagne, Intelligentsia coffee and a cheese and fruit bar to mix things up. But it’s not just about eating, you can dance to the dj and commemorate the moment in the photobooth.

  • 7-10pm. $35 general, $50 VIP. Miauhaus Studios, 1201 S La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles (map).

Saturday, July 31

Sergio Mendes and Morcheeba at the Hollywood Bowl
No better way to pass a chill summer evening than with some Brazilian tunes courtesy of Sergio Mendes. Just thinking about it makes me want to chair dance as I type this. Fix yourself up a canteen of Caipirinha and bring some takeout from Caf Brasil and you have yourself a breezy Brazilian partay in the Bowl. British trip hop band Morcheeba sets the chill and groovy tone of the evening as the opening act. If you can’t make it on Saturday, there’s always the earlier Friday show.

  • 8:30pm. $15-$156. Hollywood Bowl, 2301 North Highland Avenue, Hollywood (map).

Sunday, August 1

Win Tickets to Taste of Beverly Hills By Tweeting To Eat
Want to attend the Taste of Beverly Hills food fest but don’t have the $500 for a weekend pass? Well, if you follow TOBH’s Twitter starting August 1st through the 15th, they’ll post a daily “Culinary Clue” (Twitter hashtag #CCTOBH) about a participating chef. And on August 16, the first person to send an email after 4pm to TweetToEat@TheTasteofBeverlyHills.com with all 15 correct chef names will win TWO free weekend passes to the event (not including the Thursday 90210 party, though).

Cupcake Camp OC
This cupcake gathering hopes to attract 500 cupcake fiends for a good cause, plus some cupcake noshing and competitions. Every cupcake fan is invited to participate, whether it’s baking and bringing their donation of at least 50 of their own fabulous cupcakes or buying cupcakes. You don’t have to be a pro and if you like cupcakes baked from a box mix that’s all right, too! Personally I was considering submitting a Cake Doctor creation: Mexican chocolate cupcakes with spicy chocolate cream cheese frosting. Yum!

  • 3-6pm. Suggested donation: $10. Atrium Hotel, 18700 MacArthur Boulevard, Irvine (map).

Wally’s 7th Annual Central Coast Wine & Food Celebration
You can’t go wrong with an event where you can taste about 150 Central Coast wines from wineries like Qupe, L’Aventure and Tablas Creek and partake of signature dishes from the likes of Comme Ca, AOC, Osteria Mozza and Bouchon. What a swank evening. Proceeds will go to The Michael Bonaccorsi Scholarship Fund at the UC Davis Department of Enology.

  • 12-4pm. $95. Wally’s, 2107 Westwood Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

8th Annual Restaurant Awards: Angeleno’s Chefs Night Out

The event will honor some of our city’s best chefs like Josef Centeno, Ludovic Lefebvre and Michael Voltaggio as well as offer culinary demos and wine and spirit samplings all under the beautiful fig tree at the Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica.

  • 4:30-7:30pm. $95 general, $150 VIP. Fairmont Miramar Hotel, 101 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica (map).

Photo Gallery: Ludo Bites 4.0′s Entire Menu

Krissy and Ludo Lefebvre by Caroline on Crack

Krissy Lefebvre showing off Ludo's newest tat, le coq.

Last Friday, me and a bunch of my blogger friends, converged on Gram & Papas in downtown L.A. for Chef Ludo Lefebvre’s fourth pop-up restaurant, Ludo Bites 4.0, which runs til May 28 but is all booked up. Anyhoo, if you don’t have Twitter, read L.A. food blogs or own a TV, Chef Ludo is a Top Chef Masters contestant and the tres beau, tatted-up French chef behind a very successful pop-up restaurant in Los Angeles.

Suffice it to say, where Ludo pops up, so do his blogging fans. And on this night it was me, Lindsay and Sam of LAist, Diana Takes a Bite, estarLA and Sarah (KCRW), who isn’t a blogger but we love her anyway. Hee!

Since we’re all foodies and couldn’t make up our minds of what to get what with our varying preference and certain food aversions (I try to avoid red meat), we settled on ordering every single item from Ludo’s menu. A perfect way to appease everyone and get a taste of everything.

Naturally there were many items that I wish we didn’t have to share like the creamy white asparagus veloute, rich ham soup, seared foie gras pina colada and the two desserts but at least, should I get an opportunity to go again, I’ll know what I’ll order for myself.

Here’s the menu (listed in order of appearance ), which changes but you can click here for the updated one. All are pictured except the baguette with honey-lavender butter, which is basically bread and incredibly yummy butter. Heh. (I want to have my own tub of that butter to use in all my meals.)

By the way, sorry for the photos. Diana was kind enough to supply some light for some of the photos but it just doesn’t compare to the lightbox, which Ludo’s wife, Krissy, said they didn’t have room for at this pop-up space.

Appetizers

  • Red Snapper Tomato Ceviche, jalapenos, red onions and Meyer lemons ($14)
  • Carrot Salad, saffron anglaise cream, pearl onions, citrus, confit, mustard oil ($10)
  • Brie Chantilly Napoleon, honey comb, frisee salad, balsamic ($7)
  • White Asparagus Veloute, mozzarella mousse, fennel, candied olive, salmon roe ($14)
  • Scallop, almond puree, pickled grapes, capers, curry oil and cauliflower ice cream ($14)
  • Burgundy Escargots, garlic flan, green jus, violets ($12)
  • Seared Foie Gras Pina Colada ($29)
  • Pork Cheek Terrine, German butter ball potato, smoked mayo and apples ($12)
  • Ham Soup, bread, Swiss cheese, radish, cornichon, Guinness ($12)

Main Course

  • Squid Carbonara, pancetta, poached egg (63 degrees), parmesan snow, sage ($18)
  • Steak au Poivre, shallots, polenta bone marrow, roasted eggplant puree ($27)
  • Monkfish, jardiniere de legumes, vadouvan ($24)
  • Rack of Lamb, fresh goat cheese, smoked eel, artichokes, potato mousseline, mint ($26)

Dessert

  • Dark Chocolate Souffle, vanilla black pepper ice cream, chocolate cream ($13)
  • Strawberry Chantilly ($12)

I love Ludo’s reimagining of food, like the cauliflower ice cream, pina colada foie gras, polenta bone marrow, brie chantilly napoleon and potato mousseline, or what Krissy called, “butter with potato.” All were deliciously executed. I didn’t get to eat nearly as much as my dining companions since I avoided the steak and only took eeny bites of the lamb (which Lindsay was in love with) and the escargot which almost changed my mind about its snailness since it was so tasty. But I was still stuffed and quickly slipping into a food coma by the time we polished off the dark chocolate mousse.

Regarding wine, since it’s BYOB here, estarLA picked up a bottle for us from Domaine LA on Melrose Avenue. The 2008 J. Wilkes Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir was a very smooth vino with hints of orange zest, cardamom and cherries. Unfortunately, it was the last bottle in the store but Jill, owner of Domaine LA, has created a virtual list of wine suggestions just perfect for dinner at Ludo’s.
