Dive Barfly Reports on Macallan Tasting at Exclusive 10 Pound Bar in Beverly Hills

Macallan by David Kleeman (@kleemo)

Have you smelled anything finer? Photo by David Kleeman (@kleemo)

Ever since 10 Pound (£10), the Macallan exclusive bar, opened up at the Montage Beverly Hills earlier this year, I’ve been dying to get my grubby, unmanicured hands on its Scotch glasses. But since I’m on a broke girl budget, I could only fantasize about hitting up this reservations-only bar with its $50 minimum.

So when an invite to a special Macallan event came my way I impetuously said, “Yes! Yes! Oh yes!” Unfortunately I had completely forgotten that I was going out of town that same night. Argh! Not wanting this coveted invitation to go to waste I asked my friend, David (@kleemo) if he minded drinking fine Scotch in a private Beverly Hills bar for me. Unsurprisingly he acquiesced. Turns out he had a date scheduled that night but the two didn’t mind the fancy detour.

This box was 2 years in the making and is composed of scents of vanilla, tropical fruit and a floral note blend with a bit of spice behind it. Photo by David Kleeman (@kleemo)

Bonus for me is that David is a photographer so I knew he’d do a great job capturing the atmosphere of the event and lounge. And I liked the fact that David’s not a blogger or a scene-y kind of guy. In fact he prefers dive bars so his POV would be refreshing. He had worried that the Macallan and 10 Pound folks would be able to smell the dive bar on him but turned out fine. “(I initially got the ‘we’re better than you because we’re wearing ties’ vibe), not really (I got over it)…,” he texted me the night of the event.

The Macallan party was to introduce an aroma oil kit created by parfumer Roja Dove to “describe the essence of The Macallan in Spanish oak and in American oak.” Guests would get to sniff and taste all things Macallan as well as snack on bites meant to complement the premium Scotch. Yes, tres fancy indeed. My assignment for David: just take pictures to give me a sense of the event, especially the bar. But he gave me his notes, too. Here are the highlights, including his texts. (Yes, never text me anything you don’t want posted on my blog, heh.)

  • “This place is crazy fancy!”
  • “Well I’m drunk so… ;) pretty interesting. Very intimate place. I’m taking notes for later. Everyone here knows you!”
  • “I think we drank about $200 in free drinks so…score!”
  • “It was fun! Whiskey was great, of course, and the event made it seem even more so. Honestly, I was left with a little bit of a ‘so now what’ feeling, though…like they spent two years and who knows how much money to create a scent box that creates scents that hearken to the Macallan…which I could just go ahead and smell directly. I was expecting them to make some parallels (as they do with wine when doing similar things) to odor and how the spills would bring out the taste of the oak or something, but they made no mention of it. What I DID like, though, was that they took a jab at wine reviewers and said how they WEREN’T going to describe their scotch as having oaky undertones, etc. etc…it was funny.
  • “At any rate, I was talking about this with my date (who’s a big Macallan drinker…she LOVED the event, by the way!), and she had a more informed opinion. She said the point is that ‘it’s romancing your Scotch.’ A pretty good synopsis I think.”

So does David see himself coming back to the ol’ 10 Pound? “It felt refined and special…I could def see spending a quiet evening with great Scotch and scintillating conversation there, dressed up and enjoying the good life!”

But what did he do after the party? Hit up the Burgundy Room in Hollywood of course. Way to keep it real, David!

Highlights of New Bouchon Bakery Beverly Hills

Bouchon General Manager Stephen Cook and Chef de Cuisine Rory Herrmann by Caroline on Crack

Bouchon General Manager Stephen Cook and Chef de Cuisine Rory Herrmann.

The much anticipated LA outpost of Bouchon Bakery opens to the public tomorrow, August 17, but I (along with other media types) was granted a (hosted) sneak peek to this French pastry paradise today. Situated at the lower level of the grand entrance to Thomas Keller’s Bouchon restaurant (talk about impulse buys) in Beverly Hills, the bakery is not the place to grab and go. No, here, you really want to savor everything a la Francais and sit on the lawn out front in the Canon Gardens Plaza to enjoy the many layers of your Kouign-amann (“butter cake”), Bouchon Bakery’s signature pastry, and your cup of Equator coffee, specially blended for Bouchon of course.

I didn’t get a chance to do that today since I was late for work but from now on I’m gonna make time. Reminiscent of a Parisian patisserie, Bouchon Bakery showcases its baked goods in a mouth-watering display of chocolate croissants, sticky buns, and muffins. Yogurt parfaits, tarts and pastel macarons decorate the center refrigerated case. You may feel a bit overwhelmed by all the enticing choices but the counterperson will be glad to offer suggestions.

Bouchon Bakery counterperson by Caroline on Crack

Bouchon Bakery counterperson suggests I take these croissants.

Highlights:

  • Chef de Cuisine Rory Herrman raves about the Nutter Butter which is comprised of two peanut butter biscuits sandwiching the creamiest peanut butter there ever was. The counterperson concurred saying that this treat actually makes her giddy. She even did a little dance as she bagged one for me. And after one bite of the cookie, I had to agree.  That crispness of the biscuit gives way beautifully to that peanut buttery whipped heaven. Zowie.
  • That Kouign-amann (kwin-amahn) — a pastry that originated in Brittany, France — is a unique and hard-to-find treat that, out of the other four Bouchon Bakeries, is only available at this Beverly Hills location. And it can’t even be found in most patisseries in Paris because it’s so difficult to make. Basically, it’s a cross between a croissant and a Palmier cookie with a shiny glazed exterior and many bready layers. “The butter and sugar between each layer allow it to rise so you still get that flakiness but in between all of that you get the sweetness, too,” said Herrman who swears this isn’t too sweet for breakfast. I shared some with my co-workers and they looooved “that layer thingie.” One co-worker said he wanted to insert slices of cheese between its buttery layers. He crazy…but ingenious.
  • The yogurt parfait is insanely decadent. I see this more as a dessert than a breakfast item because its fruit compote mixed with the crème fraiche/Greek yogurt sent me deep into the sugar blues. Rendering me useless in the morning at work. But maybe if you just have this alone and not as a follow-up to the Kouign-amann, Nutter Butter and chocolate bouchon, you’ll be OK.

Warning: You may feel compelled to lick the screen.

This new Beverly Hills bakery will definitely be a required morning stop for me on my way to work. There’s lots of metered street parking or you can park in the garage (2 hours for free). But again, I have to make sure I allow enough time to just linger and ease into the day with a chocolate croissant and cappuccino.

By the way, they also have sandwiches and salads created by Herrman for lunch. Think smoked salmon on black sesame Kaiser roll ($8.50) and a $9 salad with mixed greens, herbes de Provence and goat cheese.

What’s Old Is New Again: L’Ermitage Beverly Hills’ New Cocktail Menu

India Fizz by Caroline on Crack

L'Ermitage's India Fizz

As I am a boozer on a budget, I tend to avoid hotel bars because they normally charge $15 and up for their cocktails. But I wasn’t about to turn down an invite to check out the new cocktail menu at schmancy L’Ermitage Beverly Hills.  It was hosted anyway, heh. Before I go on, yes, the cocktails here range from $14 to $16 so if that’s way beyond what you’d comfortably spend on a cocktail, believe me, I understand if you don’t want to read more. To all others who are looking for a fancy but chill place to tipple, stay with me.

The Lobby Lounge at L'Ermitage by Caroline on Crack

At the Lobby Lounge for the cocktail tasting.

Now L’Ermitage is undergoing some changes where it will become the Viceroy L’Ermitage next year. Even though the walls of the lobby bar still display famous screenplays like Jaws and Good Will Hunting as art, the bar’s name has been changed from The Writers’ Lounge to just The Lounge.

And the brand-new 10-cocktail menu is a reflection of the new and the old, classic and modern concoctions. The night I went they were doing a tasting of just four of them — two Classicals and two Contemporaries — with a brief intro of each one by Josh Golden, L’Ermitage bartender who was trained by renowned barman Sasha Petraske of Milk and Honey in New York.

Here are the four with some of my notes.

  • Bertha: Hacienda Mexicana Blanco, agave, lemon, egg white, club soda. This vintage cocktail was actually my favorite out of the four. The tequila here is not harsh or overpowering.
  • India Fizz: Broker’s Gin, Zirbenz Stone Pine Liquor, lime, blackberry, mint, club soda. Although the most photogenic of the four cocktails we had, it was a bit too light for my taste. But remember that I’m a Manhattan drinker so the hint of mint and the bit of fizz just doesn’t do it for me. No strong flavors and was just so light. Others may find it refreshing on a hot day, though.
  • Moscow Mule: Russian Standard Vodka, lime, cane sugar, Reed’s ginger beer. This was everyone else’s favorite but I thought there was way more ginger beer than vodka. The way I could tell? That sugary, acidic coating it left on my tongue, like when you drink soda. But props to them serving it in its proper copper mug. The gin Moscow Mule I had the following night at 8 oz Burger Bar on Melrose Avenue was actually more to my liking, plus it was on the $4 happy hour menu!
  • Tropical Elder: Pineapple-infused vodka, St. Germain Elderflower Liquor, Crème de Banana, grapefruit, grapefruit bitters. This crazy, weird, exotic cocktail was aromatically intriguing and surprisingly tasty. Although, I don’t think I could drink a whole cocktail glass of this stuff. It’s syrupy sweet with a sharp finish.

After the event, our hosts asked me if I wanted to have a full cocktail. Since I wasn’t particularly enamored by any of the four we tasted, I opted for the Tumbleweed with Sazerac 6-Year Rye, Laird’s Applejack, Amaro Ciociaro, Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Tawny Port, Xocolatl Bitters. So warm, complex, rich and aromatic. Definitely my favorite of the bunch with its chocolate finish. Even though it’s $15 I’d choose it as the drink to sip on while hanging out in the lobby lounge.

Bartender Josh by Caroline on Crack

Bartender Josh pouring the tastings.

By the way, if for some reason you don’t see anything you like on the menu now, give it a month when the bar will reveal another cocktail menu, except with more of a focus on signature cocktails to supplement this one.

During my visit to this Beverly Hills hotel, I was amazed to find, not old, moneyed types  or slick agent types or even recovering plastic surgery patients but rather youngish, hip, good-looking folks lounging about. And they weren’t all dressed up but casual, making it feel actually comfortable to be here. Sure, one look at the menu will probably make you feel otherwise. But if you do want to just split a plate of apps with a couple of friends and splurge on a cocktail whilst sitting on the patio near the fireplace or the waterfall, you could actually do that with nary a condescending glance your way. However they will still tell you “No pictures allowed” should you decide to whip out your camera. You know, to “protect the privacy of their guests.”

For fellow cheapskates: If you don’t want to spend any more money than you have to, the hotel offers Lobby Lounge guests free valet parking for 2 1/2 hours or there’s plenty of free parking on the street after 6!

Pinky Vodka Cocktail Contest: 28 Cocktails, 4 Judges, 1 Sexy Winner

Judges before the contest by Caroline on Crack

Judges before the contest.

I’ve had many, many cocktails in my life but never 28 cocktails in one sitting. But when I was invited to judge the Pinky Vodka Cocktail Competition at Nic’s Martini Lounge in Beverly Hills, that’s just what I had to do. Well someone had to pick the “next great mixologist to create a fresh cocktail for Pinky,” a rose-hued vodka made from glacial water and slightly sweet winter wheat that’s distilled five times and then hand blended with violets, rose petals, and 10 (!) other botanicals. The winner of the contest who could successfully create a new fab cocktail with this unusual floral, berry vodka would win an educational prize of $1,000 and a feature on PinkyVodka.com.

Fortunately, I didn’t have to judge these cocktails alone. I had the companionship of three other judges, and good ones: Natalie Bovis of The Liquid Muse, Magnus Waern (champion wine taster and co-creator of Pinky) and Dewey McBride (Southern Wine and Spirits). Plus we were armed with spit buckets, my personal savior here, so really didn’t have to consume one drop…if I didn’t want to.

Judges after the contest by Caroline on Crack

Judges after the contest.

The recipes for the 28 drinks, which had been whittled down from 50, came from all over the United States, but mostly California. And we had to consider each for presentation, balance (can you taste the Pinky?), ease of serving (can someone make it at home and/or at hot spot bar?) and use of innovative ingredients.

There were many recipes that seemed too similar in nature and a whole bunch that were just too sweet while others used unusual ingredients which ranged from green onions to rosebuds to orchids dripping with syrup.

After about four or five hours of going through all the drinks and deliberating, we finally narrowed down the cocktails to five finalists. Here they are, from 5th to 1st place, including their recipes so you can try ‘em at home. Look for the winner after the jump.

My Pink Foot by Pinky Vodka

My Pink Foot (Pinky Vodka)

5th place — My Pink Foot
By Joshua Pearson, Sepia, Chicago, IL

  • 2 oz Pinky
  • ½ oz Luxardo Maraschino
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • Dash Fees Peach Bitters
  • Drop rosewater

Add all ingredients to iced shaker. Shake and strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with candied rose petals.

(To candy rose petals, paint edible rose petals with meringue powder, and coat with granulated sugar. Let set for 24 hours.)

Anonymous Pinky by Pinky Vodka

Anonymous Pinky (Pinky Vodka)

4th place — Anonymous Pinky
By Matt Wallace, 7 Grand, Los Angeles, CA

2 oz Pinky
¼ Red Bell Pepper, muddled
¾ oz simple syrup
¾ oz lime juice
3 dashes Rhubarb Bitters

Shake, strain over ice in a bucket. Garnish with salt-crusted bell pepper slice.

Pinky Verde by Pinky Vodka

Pinky Verde (Pinky Vodka)

3rd place — Pinky Verde
By Josh Valorosi, Luna Park, San Francisco, CA (last year’s winner)

Although this was crazy spicy and it was a favorite of most of the judges, we didn’t see this as a cocktail for everyone, a trait that the winning cocktail should possess. Plus, who has raw nopal cactus at the ready?

  • 2 oz Pinky
  • 1” x 1” piece of raw nopal cactus
  • 2 x ¼” slices of jalapeño
  • 3 key lime halves
  • ½ oz St Germain
  • Splash of simple syrup
  • Salt/sugar/chili powder/cayenne rim

Muddle cactus and jalapeño with simple syrup. Add ice. Add Pinky, St Germain and key lime juice. Shake vigorously. Serve up in a martini glass with rim mixture. Garnish with triangle of nopal cactus.

Rim: 2 tablespoons of salt/sugar; I pinch each of dark chili powder and cayenne powder.

Peppered Pinky by Pinky Vodka

Peppered Pinky (Pinky Vodka)

2nd place — Peppered Pinky
By Moe Talani, Mexico Restaurante, West Hollywood, CA

I really enjoyed the refreshing quality of this cocktail. So drinkable.

2 oz Pinky
1 small Mexican Lime (diced)
2 oz limeade
Pinch of Pink Peppercorns
Top with Ginger Beer

Pour all ingredients into a highball glass over ice, shake once and top with ginger beer.

And the winner is…
