10 Things I Learned at the 2nd Annual LA Craft Beer Crawl

Beer Chicks by Caroline on Crack

Beer Chicks introduce their brand-new downtown beer store, 8th Street Bottle Shop.

Yes, I still wanted to hold a grudge against 213 Downtown for banning me from Schmeven Schmand all those years ago. But there comes a time when a girl has just gotta tell herself, “Oh get over it already.” And when you throw in craft beer, the Beer Chicks, a 7-bar beer crawl and a brand-new downtown craft beer store, well that makes it all the more difficult (and silly) to hold a grudge.

I was invited to the 2nd Annual LA Craft Beer Crawl which meandered around Downtown LA through bars that are primarily known for their cocktails. The Beer Chicks had curated the taps which before had been stuff like Stella Artois and they invited renowned craft breweries like Taps, Stone Brewing, Craftsman and Firestone to spread the gospel of good beer to the event’s attendees.

Las Perlas Bartender by Caroline on Crack

Chelada coming right up!

Unfortunately I couldn’t stick around to enjoy the whole crawl, which went on til 8pm, since my ‘rents were in town, but I made a good show of it. With my beer buddy Lindsay of LAist we ran from bar to bar, trying to enjoy as much of the exclusive pours during the VIP hours as we could. Starting off at Golden Gopher, we checked out the Beer Chicks’ new beer store, 8th Street Bottle Shop (which is now open) and then enjoyed Drakes Aroma Coma and Cismontane‘s coffee-infused Citizen. Afterward it was off to 7G for Ommegang Aphrodite, then Las Perlas for the Raul Yrastorza’s Dusty Road Chelada which featured Uncommon Brewers Siamese Twin Ale. Since the food trucks weren’t coming out til 3pm and we were starving, we braved the wait (and drunk Lotharios) at Cole’s across the street where we shared some garlic fries with Stan of Drink Eat Travel and those wacky Noble Ale Works guys.

Noble Ale Works guys by Caroline on Crack

Noble Ale Works represent.

Wrapping up the crawl Linds and I adjourned to Cana for the Maui Brewing beer float with banana ice cream and Maui Coconut Porter and ran into LA Weekly‘s Pulitzer-Prize-winning food writer Jonathan Gold “holding up a wall” and answering culinary questions for $1. (Apparently Cana’s Allan Katz put up the sign over JGold’s head as a joke.) Needless to say, I asked a bunch and found out that no, LA Weekly won’t have a JGold cocktail event this year and that the Varnish is his fave spot for grabbing a cocktail.

Now you’d think it would be almost impossible to learn and drink a whole lotta beer at the same time, but it’s not! Here are 10 other things I managed to pick up during the crawl:

1. The Beer Chicks’ 8th Street Bottle Shop is priced competitively. Christina Perozzi did a lot of comparative shopping to come up with the pricing for her bottles which she says is priced lower than Whole Foods.

2. The beers at the bottle shop are basically categorized by style and then alphabetized. Prices are displayed under each bottle.

3. The employees manning the shop will be knowledgeable enough to help you pick out a beer for any occasion or dish.

4. According to Beer Chick Hallie Beaune, Cole Haan makes heels PERFECTLY comfortable for beer crawls.

5. I haven’t been single for awhile but that move when a guy stretches as an excuse to put an arm around me? STILL not sexy.

6. The distance from Golden Gopher to Las Perlas is actually not as far as it seems, only half a mile!

7. Jonathan Gold actually prefers wine (first) and cocktails (second). Beer? Not so much.

8. Untappd users now don’t have to wait 10 minutes to check in between beers. Crucial during beer crawls and beer fests.

9. You know how Eagle Rock Brewery has a women’s beer forum that meets every third Wednesday of the month? Well, Christina will be speaking at one such forum there soon so stay tune.

10. VIP tickets are $20 more than gen admission and absolutely worth it for the exclusive pourings and short lines. (Of course I got a media pass but believe me, worth it for the elbow room.)

Tomorrow: Deschutes Kicks Off Base Camp Week in LA

Deschutes Logo Pints by Deschutes Brewery

Deschutes Logo Pints by Deschutes Brewery

Oregon beermaker Deschutes Brewery is invading Southern California! From tomorrow through Saturday, you won’t be able to turn around without running into a pint glass of Deschutes beer. OK, maybe that’s an exaggeration but for Deschutes Base Camp Week — basically a thank you from the brewery to its fans in Phoenix, LA, San Diego and Houston — there will be beer tastings, bourbon-barrel beer tastings, beer and food pairings and appearances from Deschutes mascot, Woody the giant barrel all over the place, from Greater LA to Corona Del Mar.

Check out the following calendar for a beery good time near you:

Tuesday, April 12

Verdugo Bar: Beer Tasting with Brewer Veronica Vega — 6pm to close
Enjoy your favorite Deschutes beers plus the never-released Black Butte XXIII and Jubel 2010 (which is available once a decade). Woody the barrel will be dancing a jib and Deschutes’ only female brewer, Veronica Vega will be hanging out to discuss the brewery.

Rustic Canyon: Beer Bash With Beer Chick Christina Perozzi — 6 to 10pm
For $75 enjoy a five-course dinner where beer expert and author Christina Perozzi paired Deschutes Brewery beers with a beer-inspired menu by Chef Evan Funke and Pastry Chef Zoe Nathan. Brewer Tim Alexander will also be on hand to discuss hard-to-get brews, The Dissident ’10 and The Abyss ’10.

Wednesday, April 13

Surly Goat: Beer Tasting — 5 to 9pm
My fave beer bar in WeHo will welcome Woody the giant barrel and pour the Lost Barrels of Mirror Mirror which actually were lost and rediscovered in the brewery’s warehouse. And if you can’t make it all the way to Glassell Park’s Verdugo Bar for the Jubel 2010, not to fret as they’ll be pouring it here!

Schmeven Schmand: Craft Beer and Whiskey Wednesday — 6 to 8pm
OK, this sounds too good to pass up. At this downtown whiskey bar you’ll get a rare chance to taste Deschutes’ Abyss Imperial Stout ’07, ’08 and ’09. Pair it with some hand-rolled Leon Cigars which will be available at the event for extra decadence.

Thursday, April 14

Hot’s Kitchen: Food and Beer Paired Lunch — 12 to 3pm
Take a lonnng lunch at this beer event in Hermosa Beach where you have the pick of 50 different tacos to pair with Deschutes craft beer. Woody the giant barrel will be there as well as a brewer who will answer questions about the beer.

Congregation Ale House: Deschutes Night — 4pm to close
It’s Deschutes night where the brewery will take over every tap in this Long Beach beer bar. Knock back favorites Black Butte Porter and Mirror Pond Pale. And you also get a chance to imbibe The Abyss Imperial Stout ’08.

Friday, April 15

Hi-Time Wine Cellars: In-Store Tasting — 12 to 3pm
Tired of being teased into tasting but not being able to buy at the above events? This in-store tasting in Costa Mesa will pour Deschutes beer that is available for immediate purchase. Could be dangerous. At this event they’ll also be pouring the rare Abyss Imperial Stout ’07.

Side Door: Beer and Food Pairing — 5pm to close
This Corona Del Mar restaurant’s executive chef Ryan O’Melvany has created a special menu to pair with Deschutes beers. Also they’ll be pouring The Abyss ’08 and Woody will be parked out front blasting on tunes and spinning a disco ball. Surreal.

Saturday, April 16

Pizza Port: Deschutes Night — 5pm to close
It’s a pizza and beer party at this San Clemente pizza joint. They’ll be pouring Deschutes year-round and seasonal ales like Red Chair Northwest Pale Ale and Nitro-Obsidian Stout.

EVENT: TUESDAY, APRIL 12 to SATURDAY, APRIL 16

The Bruery’s Reserve Society Initiation Party 2011 & The Bruery Provisions

The Bruery Tap Truck by Caroline on Crack

Let me at 'em!

If you’re a member of The Bruery‘s 2011 Reserve Society, you are one lucky SOB. Sure, the $195 membership is pricey for a casual beer drinker but it’s an investment for beer enthusiasts thanks to all the goodies they get, i.e. several limited edition beers, discounts and members-only events. (By the way, membership for 2011 is sold out so better luck next year.)

But the best perk of all has to be entrance into the Reserve Society Initiation Party. Each member gets two tickets to do with what they want. And, thanks to generous beer dude Alex Davis of Bike. Bus. Beer. and Library Alehouse, I was lucky enough to score a couple tickets!

Lines at The Bruery's Reserve Society Party by Caroline on Crack

Lines, lines everywhere...

Of course little did I know that getting into the exclusive party, held at The Phoenix Club aka OC Oktoberfest central, was going to be the easiest part of the whole day. Without getting into it too much: Anaheim, limited parking, mile walk.

And the long-ass line that greeted us at the entrance, even though we arrived an hour and a half into the event, was almost enough to make me want to turn around and go home to cry in my pillow. Fortunately, Alex was there to speed us through the line. Pfew!

Only thing was that once inside, we were greeted by even more lines. Lines to each of the four food trucks and about five lines for each of the tap areas. The lines crisscrossed the venue, spiraled into itself, winded around the playground, and stretched in through and out the huge tent. Groups of friends were the lucky (read: smart) ones; divvying up responsibilities and jumping in the various lines where they stocked up, cutting their wait times considerably.

Since it was just me and my friend (aka blogfather) Michael, we couldn’t cover as much ground. The first beer line I jumped in took me 30 minutes to reach the taps. This was not going to end well. With only about an hour or so left of drinking, there was no way I could salvage the day.

New The Bruery friends by Caroline on Crack

Beer bffs for life.

But then I met Fred…and Bill, George and Rob. These four nice guys, each RS members, had the system down. The slowest-moving lines were the ones leading to the beer truck which had 18 taps featuring the coveted Chocolate Rain, barrel-aged Coton and barrel-aged Turtle Doves. We stood in that line while Rob would jump in the faster-moving line to the Loakal Red and Workman’s Friend. By the time he reached the bar, he’d wave me over. We did this a couple of times. Yay! Thanks to them, I had three beers in 30 minutes.

At this point the Bruery staff stopped pussyfooting with just 2-ounce pours and even stopped bothering with pulling drink tickets to get the lines moving faster. Don’t know how much this helped but now I didn’t mind standing in line so much. Actually, I was just so happy to 1) be able to partake of this event and 2) get to taste all the fabulous Bruery brews.

Apparently there were some people on Twitter who grumbled about the lines at the event but when I was in line, the people around me voiced no such complaints. Rather, they talked excitedly about the beers they wanted to try. And most, like myself, made new friends with their neighbours. After all, there was nothing else to do while standing in line.

Melange #3 by Caroline on Crack

Mmmelange #3

Now, I didn’t get to have as many beers as I would have liked but I did have enough to make the trip to Anaheim worth my while. Especially since it was these three:

1) Melange #3: a blend of Black Tuesday, anniversary ale and White Oak snap. Naturally I was going to go for the good stuff first. Chocolate Rain had ran out when I got near the front of the line but I didn’t mind so much since I had this rich, chocolatey, decadent brew to take its place. I want more!

2) Loakal Red: partially barrel-aged in new American oak, dry hopped red ale. Now I usually don’t like hoppy beer but this was fortunately light on the pine needle flavor and tasty enough for me to have it twice.

3) Barrel-Aged Turtle Doves: barrel-aged Belgian dark strong with cocoa nibs and pecans. Another decadent beer. What I wouldn’t pay for a growler of this stuff.

The Bruery Provisions Store

After sobering up for a bit and a long walk back to our car, Michael and I swung by The Bruery Provisions store, the Bruery’s specialty store which sells beer, wine, cheese and souvenirs, just 3 miles away in Orange. I wanted to buy some of that good stuff I tasted to take home. But even though the store has a vast collection of beer in its refrigerator and along its wall shelves, I was disappointed to see that it only carried a very limited selection of Bruery beers. Just some of its year-round beers like Saison Rue, Rugbrod and Mischief. I could get those at Wally’s Wine in Westwood. Hmf. I should have gone to the brewery instead.

But the real draw here is the taps and the variety of beer flights. You can try the Bruery year-round flight (5 beers) for $3 and seasonal for $5 or venture over to other beer makers for the Porter Style Tasting Flight and Myriad of Malt Flight. But since we had a long drive back to West L.A. I’d have to save those flights for another time when I can secure a designated driver or a nearby motel room.
