Win a Bar Tab: Spare Room’s Inaugural Bartenders With Bar Tabs Auction and Boxing Day Social

Aidan Demarest by Caroline on Crack

Win a date with this guy!

Next Monday win a dream drink date with the L.A. brand ambassador/bartender (and their bar tab) of your choosing at Spare Room’s Boxing Day Social, a cocktail event whose proceeds will go to the Hospitality Kitchen, a Skid Row soup kitchen. About eight L.A.’s barsmiths will hit the auction block and Dan “The Imbiber” Dunn will auction them off and emcee what’s sure to be a hilarious and fun Inaugural Bartenders With Bar Tabs Auction.

Who’s up for grabs.

By the way, event hostess and Spare Room Director of Beverages Naomi Schimek hints that she might spontaneously get up on the auction block so keep your fingers crossed!

So, who are you going to bid on? I know, I know. With this list of awesome bars, it’s difficult to pick just one! Add to that these bartenders are a hoot, especially that mischievous Aidan (who must have TWO hollow legs) and it might just make sense to try and win them all, no?

The party is a mere $10 at the door and you get access to three bottomless cocktail punches, bar bites, a Jenga tournament, live music and a dj! Pfew! It’ll be the best 10 spot you’ve ever donated.

EVENT: MONDAY, DECEMBER 26 from 7 to 11pm

Vote Now: Who’s the Best Bartender in All of LA?

Mia Sarazen by Caroline on Crack

Which LA bartender do you think is the Bee's Knees?

Mark this down on your social calendar, cocktail fans: On October 9, the L.A. cocktail community will be celebrating Table 20′s 2nd Annual L.A.’s Best Bartender as nominated by you and ultimately voted on by an esteemed panel of judges the night of the event.

At Downtown’s Elevate Lounge, guests will be treated to boozy sno cones by Ice, Ice Shavie and a pop-up of everyone’s favorite cocktail paraphernalia shop, Bar Keeper. Plus rumor has it that the Beer Chicks, Christina Perozzi and Hallie Beaune, may be in attendance, curating a tasting table of tasty craft beer.

While you’re shopping and imbibing, judges Library Bar’s Matthew Biancaniello (last year’s winner), King Cocktail Dale Degroff, LA Times writer Jessica Gelt, local celebrity Bricia Lopez (Guelaguetza), USBG LA president/The Varnish bartender Marcos Tello and head judge Johnny Iuzzini of Top Chef Just Desserts will vote for the best Karlsson’s Gold Vodka cocktail (created by the finalist bartenders) and in turn the best bartender in L.A.

But this party can’t go down without you fine folks. From now through September 19, submit your nominations for which drink slinger you think is the best in our city. Take into account their drink knowledge, cocktail-making skills, speed, personality, smile, etc…whatever makes them awesome to you, and submit their name, name of their bar, photo (cell phone photos work) and why they deserve their face plastered on an L.A. billboard announcing them as the best bartender in Los Angeles here. You get to nominate up to three bartenders and may win a prize of a $200 gift certificate to Takami Sushi & Robata Restaurant just for nominating.

The nominated bartenders will be culled down to 24 semi-finalists and the judges will then narrow them down to four finalists. One finalist will be whoever wins the most nominations and the People’s Choice award. And at the party, the 2nd Annual L.A’s Best Bartender will be crowned. Tickets for the event aren’t on sale yet but stay tune.

Now, who do you think should win this title? Man, so many great bartenders out there! Um, Joe, Alex, Naomi, Mia, Pablo, Damian, Tricia, Julian….

Top 10 Favorite Cocktails of 2010

Musso & Frank's Manny by Caroline on Crack

Musso & Frank's Manny serving up a Gibson.

2010 was another good year for me and drinking. La Descarga and Hemingway’s opened, I gave up booze for a month and then was the judge for many cocktail competitions and even won an award for drinking a lot. But what really made this year awesome was the following cocktails, whether they introduced an innovative version of a classic or opened my eyes to something new and fabulous. Map: My 2010 L.A. Favorite Bars

Here they are, my top 10 cocktail faves from 2010, listed in alphabetical order.

1) The Drink That Shall Not Be Named from Providence: I was researching holiday cocktails when Zahra Bates of Providence hinted that she was working on this bruleed persimmons concoction. Naturally, I had to check it out so swung by the restaurant. Zahra was still tweaking the recipe but I was impressed by her thinking outside of the box with this one. The cocktail was originally supposed to be a champagne drink involving bruleed grapefruit but it evolved into this one with a mysterious, Harry Potter-esque name. Made with Leblon Cachaca, grapefruit juice, hachiya persimmon, Averna Amaro and cinnamon sugar, it’s a beautiful cool drink that possesses such warmth. It’s not on the cocktail menu but Zahra said she’ll gladly make it for anyone who asks for it.

Earl Grey Martinez by Caroline on Crack

320 Main's Earl Grey Martinez

2) Earl Grey Martinez from 320 Main: I had been dying to hit up 320 Main in Seal Beach ever since I first heard about its “Clubbed Baby Seal” cocktail which has since been renamed “George” as in Of Mice and Men. Plus I was assured that they love baby seals for hugging, not clubbing. Only problem with this place is that it’s in Seal Beach. Such a shame, at least to me, because otherwise I could see myself being a regular here. The staff is so friendly, the cocktails innovative tasty turns on classics and how could I not love owner/bartender Jason Schiffer? But his Martinez made with Beefeater Gin infused with Earl Grey Tea, Sweet Vermouth, Bitters and Maraschino Liqueur is simply gorgeous. With the flavor and complexity of a Manhattan.

3) Gen Eva from Eva Restaurant: Bartender Tricia Alley, who I first met at Providence where I enjoyed her Opium Den cocktail, took over the bar program at Eva back in August but I visited her there for the first time just last week. And even though I still love the Opium Den, which she brought over from Providence, where she still works, I couldn’t resist her Gen Eva, a flavorful mix of my favorite Bols Genever, clove Riesling reduction and lemon. She also does a warm version which should definitely replace mulled wine on your holiday drink list.

4) Gibson from Musso & Frank Grill: What makes this classic drink so special, you ask? Because 1) it was on my L.A. bucket list and 2) legendary bartender Manny — who’s served the likes of James Dean, Bette Davis, Keith Richards and Johnny Depp — made it for me. He’s been mixing at Musso since 1989 but has become a cocktail legend in this town. Just drinking that cocktail was like paying homage to booze history. The Gibson was served up in a vintage-size portion aka back when three-martini lunches were doable.

Hemingway's Nog by Caroline on Crack

Hemingway's Lounge's Hemingway's Nog

5) Hemingway’s Nog from Hemingway’s Lounge: A nog that doesn’t make me feel bloated? I’m sold! Bartender Alex Straus uses creme fraiche instead of eggs for his creamy and frothy nog, along with Atlantico Rum, Licor 43, Bitterman’s Tiki bitters and fresh ground nutmeg. The result? Something so drinkable, light and not as rich as your traditional nog. I could easily put away three of these as opposed to the one that I usually have at Christmas. (Recipe from LA Times)

6) Golden Goose from Drago Centro: Not only was this a beautiful-looking cocktail with its tuft of a gooseberry garnish but its mix of Bulleit Bourbon, Fernet Branca, Fresh Cape Gooseberries and maple syrup was my instant favorite off Drago Centro’s fall menu. I couldn’t help but knock this one back and out of the 11 cocktails we sampled that night, this one the only one I almost finished. Cheers to Beverage Director Michael Shearin and head bartender Jaymee Mandeville for coming up with this beauty.

7) Mad Man from Hollywood Roosevelt’s Library Bar: Two classic cocktails in one glass. Library Bar’s Matt Biancaniello never fails to wow me but when he created this cocktail which is comprised of a Sazerac and an Old Fashioned in a Jager glass (separated by a brandied cherry) my head exploded. So simple and yet ingenious, plus, even though it’s $15, you feel like you get your money’s worth with this tasty 2-fer.

8) Staten Island from 1886: OK, Bols Genever is one of my favorite spirits. Gosh it’s so nommy! So it shouldn’t be a surprise that I count this drink as one of my top picks for 2010. The Raymond’s new bar, created by cocktail history buff Marcos Tello and Aidan Demarest, boasts an extensive list of drinks comprised of old and new classics. This one made with Bols, Galliano and Amaro Ramazzoti is a nod to Staten Island which was originally a Dutch colony but now has a large Italian community.

Tapping the Admiral by Caroline on Crack

La Descarga's Tapping the Admiral

9) Tapping the Admiral Redux from La Descarga: The new and improved Admiral is “now barrel aged for two weeks in whiskey barrels and served neat, exponentially better,” according to LD’s owner, Steve Livigni. And he wasn’t kidding. The cocktail is made in a style called Scaffa which was popular from the 1860s til the ’20s and it’s neither shaken nor stirred but rather simply built. It’s also meant to be sipped and savored and is best enjoyed with a nice cigar in LD’s back room.

10) White Manhattan from Vu Restaurant: Bartender Jolie Klein of Vu opened up my eyes to white whiskey via her White Manhattan. It’s made with Luxardo maraschino liqueur, bitter’s truth decanter and Death’s Door and possesses all the tastiness of a Manhattan with none of the color. Fortunately it actually tastes good, and won’t suffer the same fate as Crystal Pepsi. It’s no Whistlepig Manhattan (see Hemingway’s post) but I wouldn’t kick it out of bed.

By the way, if you love pictures of cocktails, I made a whole calendar of them, CoC Cocktail Hour Calendar, so you can stare at yummy drinks all year.

Win Exclusive Invite to Table 20′s Cocktail Punch Party With Best LA Bartenders

Matt's Three Faces of Van Gogh by Caroline on Crack

Who's the best bartender in all of LA?

***CONTEST CLOSED***

So I have the skinny on a must-do event for cocktail enthusiasts. It takes place next Monday at Takami Sushi downtown and will feature six of L.A.’s best bartenders and their never-tasted-before cocktail punch recipes. Guests will be able to try all the concoctions (each serving is 4-5 ounces) for free and mingle with fellow boozers.

The bad news is that it’s invite-only and oh-so exclusive with about 100 guests. But the awesome news is that I get to pick five of my lucky crackheads to go!

This party is the grand finale for the Table 20 Best Bartender in LA contest. For weeks before, you were given the chance to nominate your favorite drink slingers in all of Los Angeles. And then my fellow judges and I had to visit the top six contestants and vote for a winner. Well, the party is where it’s all going to go down. The contestants — Matt Biancaniello (People’s Choice winner) of Hollywood Roosevelt’s Library Bar, Joseph Brooke of The Edison, Max Diaz of Cicada Club, Devon Espinosa of The Tasting Kitchen, Dee Ann Quinones of Susan Feniger’s Street and Alex Straus of Hemingway’s Lounge — will be there. Only one of them will be announced as the Best Bartender in LA. BTW, your guess is as good as mine as to who will walk away with the title. And you won’t want to miss it. The tears, the cry of defeat, the roar of victory, the free cocktails!

To even get a chance at an invite, you must already “Like” my Facebook page* (that’s how I know you’re serious about me) and then do the following 1-2 punch:

  1. Post on your own Facebook page: “I want to win an invite from @Caroline on Crack’s Crackheads to next Monday’s exclusive Table 20 cocktail punch party! http://wp.me/pNkdL-1pL” The “@” is to make sure it links back to my page.
  2. Leave a comment on my FB page telling me you did the above so I’ll know. And I’ll check!

I’ll close this contest Saturday, October 2 at 9am, tally up the entries, pick five winners and check their Facebook pages to make sure they posted on them. The five winners will then be notified via Facebook.

Good luck!

* Got this idea from my fellow judge at Vixen’s LA Happy Hours. She’s all smart and stuff.

2nd Annual Korean Barbecue Cook-off and Soju Mix-Off

LA Korean Barbecue Cook-Off by Caroline on Crack

Plates of fun at Korean Barbecue Cook-Off

Of course you want to go to the Korean American Coalition’s 2nd Annual Korean Barbecue Cook-Off this Saturday, August 7 in Koreatown. Come on, it’ll feature the top KBBQ restaurants in LA, like Park’s BBQ, Soowan Galbi and Ham Ji Park and sexy Chef Ludo and not-so-sexy Jonathan Gold will be among the judges who crown the best LA galbi (marinated bone-in beef ribs), galbi (marinated boned-out beef ribs), pork ribs and bulgogi (marinated sliced sirloin).

And, no, you’re not just going to stand there watching Ludo and JGold lick the barbecue sauce off their fingers. You, too, will get to try out the grilled offerings at $5 a plate (vouchers must be purchased at the event with cash only). Plus there will also be an eating contest (secret ingredient to be announced), a beer garden, and thankfully vendors to cool you down like Scoops ice cream, Coolhaus ice cream truck and Sprinkles Cupcakes.

For cocktail fans, the special bonus is that this year will feature a soju cocktail competition where L.A. bartenders will compete to make the best Koreatown-inspired drink. Hmm, what might those taste like? I’d tell you but the cocktail recipes are kept confidential until the event.

However, I will tell you that the competitors include Fred Warner of La Buca (formerly of The Association), Josh Goldman (formerly of the The Dining Room), Daniel Eun of The Varnish, Joel Black (formerly of Comme Ca) and Jameson Rhyme of Bottega Louie. Who will you root for?

The guy with the best KTown cocktail-making skills will win $300 and a $100 kbbq gift card and their cocktail will be featured at the KBBQ after party at Cafe Bleu for you to enjoy from 8pm to close.

In any case, this is definitely a summer event not to be missed. What could be better than ‘cue on a hot day? Just make sure to pack lots of Wet Naps.

Table20.com’s Best Bartender Contest: Who’s Your Favorite LA Bartender?

Bartender and an absinthe flame by Caroline on Crack

Bartender on fyah!

You hear me prattle on and on about my favorite bartenders in Los Angeles, but who are yours? Wait, don’t tell me here, rather nominate them on Table20.com and you will have a chance to win this one fabulous prize — dinner for four at Lazy Ox Canteen, dinner for two at Takami Sushi & Robata Restaurant and tickets for two to the post-contest party. Just nominate your fave mixologist to improve your odds.

Of course, with prizes like that you will have to do more than just click a box. You’ll have to register with Table20.com and then submit the following about your bartender:

  • their picture — mobile phone pictures work
  • their first name
  • their place of work (name and location)
  • why they deserve to be named LA’s Best Bartender

Easy peasy. And you can actually nominate more than one bartender. You have until August 4th to get your nomination in but do it now while you remember. If anything this would be a great way to give your go-to bartender their much deserved props, especially if they are an undiscovered talent, a consummate professional, a wiz in customer service or just your dependable “therapist.”

From Table20.com:

The best bartender can be defined by many aspects; best service, best drinks, broadest drink knowledge, the fastest, best under pressure, best personality, best stories, best listener, most consistent, whatever attribute makes you happy.

After the 30 days of collecting nominees and then voting, the list will be narrowed down to the top 25 nominees with the most votes. The bartender with the most votes at this point in the game will be the automatic People’s Choice winner and one of the six finalists.  The five judges (I’m one!) will then select a fave bartender from the remaining 24 nominees.

The next phase of the contest involves the judges visiting each of the finalists and then we deliberate over who is the overall winner of the contest, who will then be announced after August 16.

Your hardworking drink slinger will win not only bragging rights but a VIP bourbon tasting at the Edison, dinner at Osteria La Buca and a $100 gift certificate to every mixologist’s favorite store, Bar Keeper Silver Lake! Yeah, definitely wayy better than your usual 20% tip, right?

How To Order a Drink at the Edison’s Radio Room, & Last Night’s Recap

Trying to get to Joe.

Trying to get to Joe.

By 10:45pm, I was done. My friend Dre and I had sat on the same bar stools at the Edison’s uber-packed Radio Room night since 8 but at this point we (read: me) were tired of getting leaned on by drunk girls, projectile flirted over by drunk girls and spilled on by drunk girls as they tried very hard to interact with our bartender of the evening, Erick Castro. He was behind a wall of people and behind a bar, it ain’t happening, ladies, sheesh! Now get OFF me!

Erick Castro of Rickhouse/Bourbon & Branch

Erick Castro of Rickhouse/Bourbon & Branch

But I can’t say that I blamed them. Erick is a well-known mixologist from San Francisco, more specifically Bourbon & Branch and the new Rickhouse. And tonight he was serving up a couple of his tasty specialties. Since he was one of three of the featured bartenders of the evening, he was in very high demand so ordering drinks from him, Brian Miller (New York’s Death & Company) and the Edison’s new director of spirits, Joseph Brooke, was a near impossibility.

Ask my blogger friend estarLA, who gave up in a huff after waiting 15 minutes only to be passed over by Erick for the Amazonian flirty drunk girl who “paid” for her drink by shaking a cocktail while giggling. Or ask dapper Daniel Nelson, partner of Steve Livigni at cocktail consultation firm Top Notch Beverage Consulting, who waited patiently with everyone else to catch Erick’s eye. Or ask the other seven groups of people leaning forward around that corner of the bar, staring at Erick as if trying to will him to come to them.

You’d think I had it made, perched on the bar stool right in front of Erick’s station but even then it was difficult to get drinks. Because he was used to us being there. New people got recognized and served. I know he helped us as best he could. Erick could only make two drinks at a time and there were no backup bartenders handling the non-featured drink orders. So people ordering kamakazis and White Russians — yes, they were there — were taking up Erick’s valuable time and cocktail skills.

The patiently waiting masses.

The patiently waiting masses.

Strangely enough, people didn’t seem too bothered by all of this. Folks seemed grateful to finally get their orders in. Some even still had the energy to gush like starstruck teenyboppers when Erick served them their cocktail.

In any case, I asked Aidan Demarest, the man behind the Radio Room, if anything was going to be done to improve this situation. “We’re going to double the bartenders,” Aidan reassured me.

The Radio Room had started off as an intimate speakeasy night spread by word of mouth and has since exploded into this must-do monthly bar night getting written about on the likes of UrbanDaddy. It’s gotten too huge.

I should have suggested that they should also have a designated area for people to order drinks that aren’t on the cocktail menu, i.e. wine, Herradura Silver straight, White Russians. Let the other bartenders take care of those while the featured bartenders focus on their own cocktails.

In the meantime, here are my tips for how to get your drink quickly, or at least quicker than the norm, at the Edison during Radio Room:

  1. Order all the cocktails you want to get in one shot and then close out so you don’t have to break through the gauntlet of bar patrons again when all you want to do is leave. I know that you risk having your cocktail sit longer than it should but if you’re only going to drink two this night it won’t be too much of a compromise, especially if we’re talking drinks without ice.
  2. Get a pretty girl or blogger to order your drink for you. I was lucky enough to be introduced to Erick by Aidan so he knew to take care of us and I was able to catch Erick’s eye a bit quicker than one of the bartender patrons. I related this story to Pablo Moix of La Descarga, who was enjoying his night off here and he replied, “If it’s going to be between you and that guy, I’m going to go with you of course, the blogger.” Funny thing is, he knows that guy.
  3. If all you want is a Jack and Coke, go to one of the non-featured bartenders. You’ll be able to get your drink order in faster and easier and they’re usually located at the not-as-crowded end of the bar.
  4. When you just want to leave the drink order in your mixologist’s hands, don’t just say, “I’ll take any drink you want to make me.” If anything, specify what spirit/flavors you prefer so that the mixologist doesn’t have to waste too much time trying to figure out what you might like. And when you specify you increase your chances of getting a cocktail that you’ll love.

One drinker’s opinion of the cocktails and who was the best mixologist after the jump…
