Cocktail Destination Picks From dineLA’s January 2012 Restaurant Week

Julian Cox by Caroline on Crack

Julian Cox: Playa, Rivera, Sotto, Short Order, Picca

dineLA’s January 2012 Restaurant Week starts next week January 22. Have you made your reservations yet? In its 5th year, the annual food event has over 300 restaurants participating so lots of great places to choose from. And because of that it can be a bit overwhelming. But I figured I’d try and help by narrowing down your list of options to ones that are known for their cocktail programs. (Drinks aren’t included in the special dineLA menus.)

Areal Restaurant (Santa Monica):  Mixologist Mia Sarazen (Black Market Liquor Room and Harvard & Stone) is the mastermind behind the cocktail program here. Try her herbaceous Last Word with rye, maraschino, lemon, rosemary, basil and sage. Cocktail menu.

Bar | Kitchen (Downtown): David Kaplan and Alex Day (of Demi Monde and Death & Co.) redid this bar via their hospitality company Proprietors LLC and now it boasts one of the best cocktail programs downtown. Plus the food here is nomlicious comfort cuisine. Crack tots! Cocktail menu.

Cliff’s Edge (Silver Lake): This Eastside restaurant, famous for its gorgeous patio, has just enlisted Chef Benjamin Bailly (Fraiche Culver City). But its classic-esque cocktail menu created by bartenders Richard Swan and Dan Thomson should not be overlooked. Cocktail menu.

Comme Ca (West Hollywood): This is where a lot of LA’s top mixologists got their start — Marcos Tello, Julian Cox, Joel Black. ‘Nuff said. Check out its cocktail menu.

Drago Centro (Downtown): Mixologist Jaymee Mandeville has taken over the reins from Michael Shearin at this downtown Italian restaurant and is creating instant classics. Finish off your evening with her Rode Duivel which stars Bols Genever, S. Maria al Monte Amaro, sour cherry bitters. Cocktail menu.

Il Covo (West Hollywood): The new Italian restaurant makes its debut on dineLA this year. Great Italian food but even better Italian-inspired cocktails. Say yes to the Negroni here. Cocktail menu.

Lukshon (Culver City): Sang Yoon’s restaurant boasts some of the more exotic dishes and drinks in the dineLA roster. The adventurous should dive into the drink list which incorporates unusual ingredients like shaoxing wine, lapsang souchong black tea and ginger pear onions. Cocktail menu.

Michael’s (Santa Monica): This California cuisine restaurant just got with the farm-to-glass mixology program last year with Jason Robey (Bar |Kitchen) taking charge of its cocktail program. Cocktail menu.

Ray’s and Stark Bar (Mid-Wilshire): Sommelier/mixologist Paul Sanguinetti took over the cocktail program from Michel Dozois and likes to take his cocktail inspiration from Chef Kris Morningstar’s dishes. Cocktail menu.

Rosa Mexicano (Downtown): Don’t dismiss this cantina’s cocktail menu even if it does still have the frozen pomegranate margarita . The list was redone by cocktail masters David Kaplan and Alex Day. Cocktail menu.

Sadie (Hollywood): The new gastropub is jumping into the fire by debuting the same week as dineLA’s restaurant week. But that dinner menu looks deelish. And beverage director Giovanni Martinez’s cocktail menu looks even more delicious. Cocktail menu.

Mixologist Julian Cox everywhere in dineLA:

You can’t swing a cocktail straw without hitting this master mixologist’s creation. He’s the man behind the cocktail programs for Rivera and Playa as well as Picca and Sotto in West LA and more recently Short Order at the Farmers Market. For Playa he’s created a special dineLA cocktail and at Short Order you can add his Charlie Brown spiked custard shake to your prix-fixe lunch.

Michael’s Farm to Glass Cocktail Menu Debuts
Sounds like the Westside just got yet another reason for cocktail enthusiasts to cross the 405 border from the Eastside: farmer’s market fresh cocktails concocted by Jason Robey of Bar & Kitchen and Les Deux Estate. The cocktail menu ($12 a drink) goes crazy with produce, like the Karai Karai with jalapeno/red bell pepper simple, lemon, cilantro, jalapeno, grapefruit, chipotle Tabasco and Yamasaki 12-year single malt. That’s a lot of ingredients. There are also bar bites like $8 sage and lemon popcorn and a slider duo with foie gras and Wagyu beef.

Booze Clues Santa Monica Pub Crawl Scavenger Hunt
When pub crawling, the most activity I’d be willing to do is walk three or four blocks to the next pub. But this particular boozy event sounds like a lot of fun. The spirited scavenger hunt will have you searching for clues and challenges at four bars on Main Street in Santa Monica. Motivating you to move on to the next bar challenge, as if you need a reason? A free drink at each of the destinations.

  • 3:30pm. $40 single, $140 group of 4. World Cafe, 2820 Main Street, Santa Monica (map).

Death & Co’s Alex Day and David Kaplan Bring Their Cocktails Downtown

Me and Alex Day chowing down - Caroline on Crack

Me and Alex Day chowing down on chicken.

You read right. Renowned mixologist Alex Day had teamed up with David Kaplan, co-owner of Death & Co in New York, to form their own hospitality consultation company, Proprietors LLC. And the two took over the operations of Bar & Kitchen in O Hotel downtown back in October. And apparently this was all on the hush-hush.

But the most exciting part is that now I don’t have to wait for one of those guest bartending gigs at Red Rover or Radio Room to enjoy Alex Day’s cocktails. PLUS, even though the cocktail list is small, they’re only $10 each. A huge bargain in downtown L.A. where drinks are usually about $12 and up.

Cocktail menu:

  • Site Hound: gin, aperol, scarlet glow, fresh lemon & grapefruit juices, seltzer water
  • Blanchet: vodka, honey, fresh lemon & orange juices, basil
  • Restoration Road: blanco tequila, fresh lime juice, cointreau, lillet blanc, raspberries
  • Smokescreen: Islay Scotch, fresh lime juice, dash green chartreuse, mint

Domaine de Canton Cocktail Competition at First & Hope

Domaine de Canton's Silamith Weir with The Edison's Joseph Brooke by Caroline on Crack

Domaine de Canton's Silamith Weir with The Edison's Joseph Brooke

Last week I was fortunate enough to be invited to be one of the judges at the Domaine de Canton cocktail competition held at downtown’s First & Hope Supper Club. I know. Squeeee! Along with renowned mixologist Alex Day (formerly of Death & Co., now cocktail consultant with Proprietors, LLC), Dan “The Imbiber” Dunn and Domaine de Canton founder, John Cooper, I was charged with picking one winning Domaine de Canton cocktail out of the nine created by some of the best mixologists in L.A. Boy, what a tough gig. Heh.

Each cocktail was judged based on its appearance, aroma, creativity and taste. We also had to award points for whether the cocktail showcased the contest theme and the Canton flavor, as well as our overall impression of the drink.

The Contestants

Malo‘s Rachel Shaw brought forth a honeyed El Wood of Barenjager honey liqueur and Yellow Chartreuse. Gus, formerly of Copa d’Oro and now at the Edison, went with Ginger Pastis Sour while Palihouse‘s Grady Purdell had a Maison Sour of cognac. Patrick Kelly at Bar Keeper created an unusual drink he dubbed Rhythm or Rhyme which employed a chocolate chili bitters, tequila reposado and a unique garnish of grapefruit rind string wrapped around a bundle of sage. Juan Sevilla of Soho House made the French Oaxacan with crema and cru and Daniel Eun of The Varnish ended the night with a Triple Double using Laird’s Apple Jack and Antica.

The Runners-Up

Out of all the lovely drinks, the judges and I were able to narrow it down to the top three. The second and third runners-up cocktails were impressive showings but only missed the top slot by mere points. Still both were very deelish. I’ve included the recipes should you want to try them at home.

Tricia Alley of Providence and First & Hope created her Granny Smith & Wesson, a cocktail with Old Overholt Rye as its backbone and fennel seed and muddled Granny Smith apples. This one was a beautiful peachy color with a single baby basil leaf floating on its surface. The flavor combination of basil and apples was just gorgeous, and the rye and ginger with that was a natural fit.

Granny Smith and Wesson
By Tricia Alley of First & Hope

  • 1.5 oz Domaine de Canton
  • 1.5 oz Old Overholt Rye Whisky
  • .75 oz fresh squeezed lime
  • 3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
  • 1/2 Granny Smith apple
  • Barspoon fennel seed

Muddle Granny Smith Apple, Fennel Seed and Peychaud’s Bitters in mixing glass. Add the rest of the ingredients, shake, fine strain into cocktail glass. Float Basil leaf garnish on liquid.

Joseph Brooke of The Edison created a tasty and refreshing Appleseed Cooler. He wanted to focus on the Canton so used that as his main spirit. The cocktail was so simple and yet made a strong impression, successfully highlighting the ginger flavor. The drink was sweet but not overly so. I liked how, even though his apple garnish went missing, he was able to improvise by butterflying a grapefruit which ended up looking like jewelry.

The Appleseed Cooler
By Joseph Brooke of The Edison

  • 2 oz Domaine de Canton
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1 oz fresh-pressed Granny Smith apple juice
  • 2 dashes celery bitters

Shake all and pour over rocks. Apple fan garnish.

But there could only be one winner of the title for best Domaine de Canton cocktail whose mixologist would also score $500. And that winner was…
