Super Bowl 2012 L.A. Party Roundup for Foodies and Drinkers

The Eveleigh from The Eveleigh's Facebook page

The Eveleigh celebrates Super Bowl 2012

I don’t watch football, don’t really like it. And up until yesterday (today?) I wasn’t sure which two teams are even playing the Super Bowl. New England Patriots and New York Giants, right? But I LOVE Super Bowl parties — the food, the drinks, the running commentary. It’s where foodists and sport fans finally come together. So here’s a hand-picked list of what I think are some of the best Super Bowl parties around town, most notably for their tasty food and drink specials.

Akasha’s Super Bowl Party — All-Day Happy Hour and Special Super Bowl Menu
Enjoy happy hour prices (1/2 off wine, well drinks, draft beer and specialty cocktails) at the bar during the game and all night, and in the dining room from 3 to 5:30pm. The special menu is categorized by Kick Off (bratwurst on brioche, pizza), First Down (onion rings, dips, fries), Third and Goal (pulled pork sliders, Punjabi chicken wings) and Touchdown (Boston cream pie, NY cheesecake). Watch the game on a 9-by-6 projector screen with live game audio.

Beer Belly’s Super Sunday — $5 Craft Beer and Super Bowl Menu
THE place to go for nommy drunk food is boasting the likes of NY pizza mac n’ cheese and catfish n’ chips with chowder aioli as well as $5 pints of California craft beer. And don’t forget the wings, corn on the cob and duck fat fries. Oh my!

City Tavern — All-Day Happy Hour
Get your gourmet game on in Culver City. This gastropub, which will open early at 2:30pm, will be featuring $10 craft beer growlers during its all-day happy hour, as well as “Super Bowl” meatballs and Spanish chorizo pigs in a blanket. Mmm, craft beeeer.

The Eveleigh’s Super Bowl ’12 Sunday Social
Brunch ends at 3pm at this Sunset Strip bar/restaurant but Chef Jordan Toft will offer up hot dogs and chili cheese fries ($8 each) for game time. Order up pitchers of beer as well as the bar’s famous Poor Carlito’s (tequila, lime juice, honey, smoked sea salt) and pitchers of Pimlico Punch (whiskey, lemons, tangerines and mint — $43 and serves six).

ForgeLA’s Super Seoul Sausage Bowl — Open bar
Yup, I said “Open Bar!” Sure, entry is $20 but you get an open bar courtesy of Ketel One Vodka and Deschutes Beer. PLUS there’s a nacho bar, all-you-can-eat Seoul Sausage, photo booth, beer pong, Snow Monkey dessert, halftime giveaways AND two 20-foot screens to watch the game on.

Harvard & Stone’s Super Bowl Bash — Unlimited food and drinks
For $40 via Thrillist Rewards, you get all the Singha beer, wells and specialty punches you can drink before the game (2:30pm) and all the hamburgers, chips/salsa and bbq chicken you can gorge yourself on. Considering that cocktails here usually run around $12, it’s a killer deal. I just love the fact that this craft cocktail bar is even throwing a Super Bowl party, cuz you know the drinks are going to be stellar.

Short Order — Super Bowl Menu
This Farmers Market burger joint is putting up TV screens especially for the Big Game! Add to that mixologist Julian Cox’s cocktails and spiked custard shakes as well as SO LA (bacon-wrapped North Country) Dogs ($7) and short rib chili cheese spuds ($9 with $3 add-ons like bacon and melted aged cheddar) and you can settle in nicely for some football. Or if you gotta dash, you can order those indulgent dogs in a three-pack to go ($18)!

Tony’s Darts Away Vegan Super Bowl — Vegan bar food and $3.50 Golden Road beers
Yes! Bar food that won’t make you feel all erp-y after. At this vegan Super Bowl party, which starts at 12pm, they’ll feature bbq jackfruit sliders (pulled pork for the carnivores), a vegan five-layer dip and vegan buffalo “whings.” Wash all that down with $3.50 glasses of Golden Road Brewing’s beers.

Westside Tavern — Super Bowl Menu
The Westside gastropub will open up its private back room, which is equipped with its own bar and a big screen TV, to the public just for the occasion. There will also be two specials: beer-boiled bratwurst with sautéed pepper and onions or homemade sauerkraut on a pretzel roll for $7, pork belly sliders, apple BBQ sauce, apple-cabbage slaw for $8.

Blog Bite: Akasha’s Doggy Treats

Akasha doggy biscuits by Caroline on Crack

Akasha's doggy treats.

OK, obviously I didn’t eat the doggy treats made by Akasha Richmond of Akasha in Culver City, although I bet I could and I’d be fine since they’re made with peanut butter, honey, oats, brown rice flour and peanuts. Yup, I could so eat that! But no, Akasha gave the treats to my dog Mya who looovvved them.

The gluten-free biscuits are made at Akasha’s bakery in the restaurant and she sells two flavors — oatmeal-peanut butter  ”cookies” and cornmeal dog bones — at two for $1. You can pick up a bag in the cafe area.

Akasha doesn’t have a dog of her own, rather she has three cats, but she still loves canines and when she came across the recipes for dog biscuits in a cookbook she felt compelled to make them. I’m so glad she did.

When we visited her at the restaurant this past Sunday she fed them to Mya who instantly became her best friend, staring after Akasha every time she got up just in case she was really getting up to get more biscuits. My doggy totally loved them.

The dog bones come in two sizes — small and large — which I just fed to Mya in one sitting since they’re kinda tough to break in half. But the peanut butter cookie I broke up into bits since it’s softer and moist like a regular cookie. Man, they look good. I might have to give ‘em a taste myself.

Boozing With Man’s BFF: Dog-Friendly Bars in Culver City

Mya in a t-shirt by Holly Hite

Mya in her going-out clothes.

Ever since I got my rescue pit bull Mya, I want to take her with me everywhere. I mean, wook at that wittle face! Unfortunately, most bars/restaurants usually won’t let me share a table with my new canine bff, something about it being a violation of a health code or something. Pfft! In any case, that hasn’t stopped me from trying to find places within the 1.5-mile radius of where I live in Culver City/Palms where I can booze it up with Mya close by. Here’s what I found.

Akasha: Akasha has a couple of patios, one adjacent to the dining room and one off the café side. Dogs aren’t allowed on the patio but can be tied up outside it. Although I love stopping by here for a little breakfast and the happy hour, I’m squeamish about leaving Mya outside the fence since the sidewalk is kinda narrow so if other dogs walk by there could be a problem. In any case the trick is to score a seat off to the side away from the main thoroughfare. Recommended drink: One of the organic seasonal cocktails (the list on the site needs to be updated).

Bigfoot West: They have a patio enclosed by a fence with slats so you can tie your pooch to the outside of it and pet him/her through the spaces, if your hand can fit, that is. Unfortunately, this is a smoking patio so if you can’t stand the smell of cigarette smoke, you might want to skip this one since it seems like a lot of Bigfoot’s patrons like that bad habit. I hate smoke but the appeal of a great beer selection  and whiskey was hard to resist. Happy hour is daily from 5-9pm with $5 cocktails. Recommended drink: Boont Amber Ale on tap — smooth, flavorful, refreshing or a Manhattan. The happy hour drinks are too light (and sweet) for my taste so I stay away.

Father’s Office: Surprisingly the place that doesn’t allow photography, babies or ketchup lets you bring your dog but only if you tie him/her up outside of the patio. What I like about this is that Mya is dog-aggressive but since she’s tucked in behind plants and there’s a lot of room for people and their dogs to walk a wide birth around her she can’t get into trouble. Anyway, yay for enjoying really tasty craft beer alongside man’s best friend. Recommended drink: Can’t go wrong with any of their beers plus they also have a full bar so check out their Manhattan.

Gyenari: OK the food and cocktails here aren’t all that great but gotta love a patio with heated lamps and a place to tie up your doggy nearby. When I went they said I had to tie Mya outside of the fence but shhhh! they didn’t yell at me when she “snuck” onto the patio. Heh. Recommended drink: Stick to straight booze, neat or on the rocks. UPDATE 4/21/11: Gyenari is now closed but has been replaced with MoKo.

Le Saint Amour: The patio of this French brasserie actually has a place designated pour les chiens. It’s tucked in from the sidewalk so your dog doesn’t get stepped on by passers-by. Great place for enjoying wine and bites with friends. Keep in mind that they have delicious bone marrow here. However when I tried to give the leftover bone to Mya, she wouldn’t have it. She’s one picky eater. Recommended drink: Take your pick from beers like Allagash or Le Fin du Monde or from the wine list which features wine by the glass from $9-$15.

Native Foods: If you’re into organic beers (I’m not really), this is the place for you. They have a patio so you can enjoy your En ”Cha-Cha” Lada Bowl and Stone beer with Fido (on the other side of the fence of course).

Rush Street: Now I haven’t taken Mya to this Culver City barestaurant yet but they are right next door to Gyenari and also have a patio that you can tie your dog outside of. Same situation in terms of food and cocktails as Gyenari — meaning meh — but take your pick if you want to sit at a bustling patio or a quieter one. They have happy hour here but it’s only applicable to the second floor. Bew. Recommended drink: Draft beer or straight booze (their cocktails are too sweet for the likes of me).

This Weekend: Foodie Workouts, Bastide Cocktail Hour, Filipino Tasting Event

This weekend is gonna rawk! Not just because of the LA Street Food Fest Summer Tasting Event, which hopefully you’ve gotten your tickets for, but because there’s so much to do. Take your pick or do ‘em all.

Thursday, July 22

Villains Grand Opening
Thrillist calls this new bar a “steampunk-themed cocktail bar” and it officially opens tomorrow but the grand opening party is tonight so if the streets seem a bit emptier it’s because everyone’s at that party. I kid, sorta. But if you’re a fan of the Bordello Bar (the owner and designer is also the creative mind and money behind this one) as well as beer and bourbon, you’ll want to check this place out. Juices for the cocktails are “squeezed to order” and they have a variety of 28 beers on tap.

  • Villains Tavern, 1356 Palmetto Street, Los Angeles (map).

Friday, July 23

Six Taste to host LA’s First Filipino Food and Wine Tasting Event
Yay for Filipino food getting some love thanks to the likes of the first Filipino food truck, Manila Machine. But if you haven’t tried the cuisine of my peeps yet, Six Taste Food Tours will feature a traditional Filipino and Filipino-inspired five-course tasting menu that will be paired with wine! Bonus is that Manila Machine will provide the dessert. Hopefully it’s the yummy ube cupcake. After the event, there will be a live DJ and some cocktails so you can work off that delicious meal.

  • 7pm. $49. Far Bar LA, 347 E 1st Street, Los Angeles (map).

Saturday, July 24

Devil’s Drive In: Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction has gotta be my favorite Tarantino film, right up there with Kill Bill, of course. But so many great one-liners. “Bring out the Gimp!” You can also thank (or curse) Pulp Fiction for jumpstarting John Travolta’s career. BYOB and grab a patch of Astroturf and enjoy this outdoor screening.

  • 7pm. 240 W. 4th Street, Los Angeles (map)

Sunday, July 25

Yoga for Foodies at Akasha
What a great way to start off the week: a flowing yoga class at a sustainable pace followed by a yummy organic brunch of farm-to-table food created by Akasha Richmond, who actually began her career at Yogi Bhajan’s Golden Temple Conscious Cookery. • 11am-1pm. $54. Akasha, 9543 Culver Boulevard, Culver City (map). (310) 845-1700.

Akasha’s Tru Organic Cocktail and Indian Dinner Pairing

akasha 001

Awesomeness! And FINALLY! A dinner that pairs food with not wine or beer but cocktails! I’m so excited! Chef Akasha Richmond of Culver City’s Akasha Restaurant, along with Litty Mathews and Melkon Khosrovian — the owners/creators of Tru Organic Spirits — is behind this very special and rarely seen food event.

Chef Akasha, a fan of Eastern cuisine, will present four Indian courses which are then paired with a Tru Organic cocktail that complements its bold spices and strong flavors. Nommy!

The menu:

  • Reception Cocktail: Spicy Mixed Nuts with Chat Masala
Passion Fruit Martini with Chile, Candied Ginger Vodka & Hibiscus
  • Snacks:Farmer’s Market Vegetable & Paneer Pakoras, Yellow Mung Bean & Spinach Croquettes, Mint & Green Chile Chutney / Roasted Coconut Chutney / Tomato-Apple Chutney, Scallion & Ginger Raita
Malabar Gin & Tonic with Litty’s Home Grown Curry Leaves
  • Salad: Garbanzo Chat Salad with Tomato, Cucumber & Pomegranate
Ginger Martini with Lime, Cilantro & Agave
  • Mains – Served Family Style: Kerala Chicken Curry with Balinese Pepper & Yogurt on Spicy Weiser Pumpkin Puree, Okra Curry with Mango Powder & Pear Tomatoes, Yard-Long Beans with Ginger & Garam Masala, Yellow Lentil Dal with Curry Leaves & Mustard Seed, Pink Burmese Rice Pilaf with Himalayan Raisins, Almonds & Pistachios, Smokey Eggplant Raita & Local Mango Chutney
Malabar Mary with Tomato Water & Pickled Cucumber
  • Tru Spirits Infused Desserts: Mango Lassi Sherbet / Vanilla Tru & Lime Sorbet / Ginger Tru & Jasmine Ice Cream, Pistachio & Goji Berry Biscotti, Cardamom Shortbread or Akasha’s Homemade Ginger & Black Pepper Chai

The best part is that you get all that for only $45, plus gratuity and tax! A deal considering cocktails are usually $10-plus and you get four of them here plus yummy food.

Make your reservations asap as these things book up fast. And I’m thinking especially this one because it’s so special. Food and cocktail pairing, come on! Call (310) 845-1700.

I went to the last event which paired Unibroue beer with food and it was not only a tasty good time but so much fun.
