Win a Bar Tab: Spare Room’s Inaugural Bartenders With Bar Tabs Auction and Boxing Day Social

Aidan Demarest by Caroline on Crack

Win a date with this guy!

Next Monday win a dream drink date with the L.A. brand ambassador/bartender (and their bar tab) of your choosing at Spare Room’s Boxing Day Social, a cocktail event whose proceeds will go to the Hospitality Kitchen, a Skid Row soup kitchen. About eight L.A.’s barsmiths will hit the auction block and Dan “The Imbiber” Dunn will auction them off and emcee what’s sure to be a hilarious and fun Inaugural Bartenders With Bar Tabs Auction.

Who’s up for grabs.

By the way, event hostess and Spare Room Director of Beverages Naomi Schimek hints that she might spontaneously get up on the auction block so keep your fingers crossed!

So, who are you going to bid on? I know, I know. With this list of awesome bars, it’s difficult to pick just one! Add to that these bartenders are a hoot, especially that mischievous Aidan (who must have TWO hollow legs) and it might just make sense to try and win them all, no?

The party is a mere $10 at the door and you get access to three bottomless cocktail punches, bar bites, a Jenga tournament, live music and a dj! Pfew! It’ll be the best 10 spot you’ve ever donated.

EVENT: MONDAY, DECEMBER 26 from 7 to 11pm

This Weekend: Whiskey Schooling, Boilermaker Tasting, Tequila Dinner

Friday, October 21

Neat’s Distilleries Series 1
Aidan Demarest has managed some of the best bars in L.A. and in turn formed great relationships with distilleries. Now that he has what he calls the “hottest little Fotomat in Glendale” he’s kicking off a distilleries series at his new bar Neat. The finest distillers from all over will swing by and give walk-throughs of their spirits. This week is a Q&A with High West Distilleries, Utah’s finest whiskey. RSVP here.

  • 2pm. Neat, 1114 Pacific Avenue, Glendale (map).

The Beer Chicks’ Late Night Penny Boilermaker Preview Tasting at 8th Street Bottle Shop
The Beer Chicks  will be taking the Boilermaker to the next level by pairing fancy beers from their 8th Street Bottle Shop with complex whiskies at Schmeven Schmand. For a sneaky peek/taste at the roster of two-step cocktails, stop by their beer store in Golden Gopher tomorrow night at 11pm where whisky expert Johnny the Scot will also be on hand to tell us why this is an awesome thing. And on Tuesday at 7G they’ll be serving up the Boilermakers which are made to be shared with friends. Fun and yum!

  • 11pm-1am. 8th Street Bottle Shop, 417 W. 8th Street, Downtown (map).

Sunday, October 23

3rd Annual LA Beer Week Beer Festival
Waaah! So sad that LA Beer Week is coming to an end. I think I need closure. Fortunately, closure will come in the form of a beer fest at the beautiful Union Station downtown. There, beer lovers will partake of over 70 craft breweries from all over the world. Good stuff featured will include rare beers as well as brews that were only available for beer week.

  • 12-4pm. Union Station, 800 N Alameda Street, Downtown (map).

Los Angeles Magazine’s Food Event 2011
Such a fancy food fest what with the gorgeous venue at the Saddlerock Ranch in Malibu. Fine wine, lots of great food and llamas! Seriously, this is one of my fave food events and I’m sorry I’ll have to miss it this year. Here are my pics from last year’s. For this sixth annual event, they’ll have restaurants like Black Market Liquor Bar, Fonuts, Lukshon, Picca, Playa and so much more offering noms for guests to stuff their faces with. Grab a glass and peruse the grounds of this ranch, which is home to Malibu Family Wines, while feasting on some of the best food. Where flats, though, else your heels sink into the grass.

  • 1-4pm. $95-$100. Saddlerock Ranch, 31727 Mulholland Highway, Malibu (map).

Tuesday, October 25

Last Night at Spare Room’s Tiki Night: Flaming Cocktail Bowls and Zombies

Marcos and cocktail bowl by Caroline on Crack

The last thing I remembered.

Leave it to Mr. Aidan Demarest to go out with a bang. Last night was his grand finale as director of beverages for Hollywood Roosevelt’s Spare Room. And it also happened to be Tiki Night featuring the cocktail stylings of the very talented Marcos Tello (The Varnish) and John Lermayer (The Florida Room, South Beach). Coincidence? I think not.

Naturally, cocktail geeks like Thirsty in LA, EstarLA , LaurenTheClark and Social Domain LA as well as liquor industry folks like bartender Zahra Bates and Plymouth Gin brand ambassador Silamith Weir turned out in full force for the event to wish Aidan good luck in his new venture, Neat bar in Glendale, as well as to marinate in the tiki concoctions of the evening.

Get the flash player here: http://www.adobe.com/flashplayer

Many, many bowls of Marcos’ flaming Kraken-Toa Bowls made the rounds in the room causing innocent by-standers to duck the cocktail’s long spear-like straws. A favorite of the evening was John’s One of the Hammock, a very light, frothy cocktail which was a welcome respite from the heavier, sugary tiki drinks. To me it came across as a mint frappe…even though it didn’t have mint in it but coconut rum, Domain de Canton, absinthe, pineapple leaves and sage leaves.

In any case, last night was a blast. Here’s to many more parties at the Spare Room under the new leadership of new Director of Beverages Naomi Schimek!

Neat Bar by Aidan Demarest in Glendale: No Cocktails, No Waiting + Q&A Outtakes

Naomi and Aidan at the Spare Room by Caroline on Crack

Spare Room's new beverage director Naomi Schimek and the departing Aidan Demarest.

A new bar but without a specialty cocktail menu? Unheard of! Especially in this day and age of hot L.A. mixologists and must-do cocktails. But Aidan Demarest — well-known bar guy who’s managed places like the Edison, Schmeven Schmand and the Roosevelt’s Spare Room — told me for an interview I did with him for LA Weekly‘s Squid Ink that he’s done talking about cocktails. So for his brand-new bar Neat, which opens up in Glendale on October 8, he’s focusing on spirits.

No well-crafted cocktail menu, except on the occasional guest bartender night, just “deconstructed” drinks arriving on pallets: spirit served neat alongside a glass of mixers. Think vodka with a side of ginger beer and lime for a Moscow Mule. No stemware here, just rocks glasses.

And the venue, which takes the place of ol’ beer bar Side Bar, will strip away all the Moroccan filigree down to the bar’s original mid-century foundation. A simple bar and a simple menu. Aidan wants to return it to its straight-drinking roots. Here are a couple of outtakes from my interview with him.

I don’t want to build it up too much because it’s not as interesting and it’s certainly the tiniest remodel I’ve ever done but the remodel of this place, the decor, it’s a mid-century bar. It’s built in the ‘50s. It’s a mid-century Glendale bar. Underneath [the old Moroccan decor] is this great Post- World War II bar that I’m sure every car salesman and cop in Glendale hung out at and had a beer right before he went home. That’s what I loved about it. It reminded me of a Boston local. And you could tell the emphasis was on the bar. It was really a bar. I’m bringing it back to a bar and it already is so awesome to watch.

The only big difference we did was create this shrine to liquor. There’s going to be 30 feet of liquor that run the length of the bar. It’s 3,500 square feet. It’s not that big at all but it’s all you need. There’s a lot of space in a bar that is superfluous. This is a bar and tables and chairs and there are two booths in front that are great. And he has a dj thing. I’m going to do some entertainment. There’s a cabaret license so there’s going to be djs and bands. It’s not a speakeasy, it’s a bar.

My fave part of the interview with Aidan was to hear him talk about the distillers, who will also be showcased at Neat:

Watching that process has always fascinated me because I know how much work it is. And those guys, those distillers and the master distillers they can taste a sunny afternoon in 1975. I swear to god, they’re amazing. I had such admiration for that when I first got into this business and I met some of those guys. And they’d be like, ‘Here’s why I do this…and it’s on this side of the rickhouse because there’s an open window over there that got busted out in World War II, we never fixed it so the breeze blows right in and out and I always use that barrel when I wanna soften up the last..’ literally. You’re like, ‘Whhhat?’ There’s like 8,000 barrels in there and the guy is like, ‘The one by the window over there is softer.’ No really. That’s a true story. We’re talking about a place that’s as big as a mall and he’s like, ‘I told them never to fix that window ‘cause it just does so well. We’d have squirrels get through it though.’ That’s amazing and all that goes into a glass or a bottle, unknown to anyone.

Neat will have a private industry opening on October 7 but will open its doors to the public on October 8. Can’t wait!
