This Weekend: Steampunk Affair, Venice Art Crawl, Evil Dead Double Feature

My plans this weekend? Moving boxes and UHaul truck. Yours? See below:

Thursday, August 19

Debut of Venice Beach’s Monthly Art Crawl
Now Westsiders who are averse to crossing the Great 405 Divide won’t have to wish they could go downtown for an art crawl. Venice Beach is kicking off its own free monthly crawl of its artist community and over 20 venues like Hotel Erwin, James Beach and the Canal Club. Each venue will each feature a different artist and offer discounts on food and drink. The Hit & Run crew will silk screen customize T-shirts at the Townhouse at 6pm. Find live art behind Jodi Maroni’s on Speedway and vintage photos at Hotel Erwin’s High Rooftop.

  • 6-10pm. Venice Boulevard and Pacific Avenue, Venice (map).

Saturday, August 21

Old Bank District 10th Anniversary Block Party
Celebrate the 10th anniversary of downtown’s Old Bank District which will feature street cafes, beer and wine gardens, art exhibits and live music. Participating restaurants include Lost Souls, Rocket Pizza Lounge and Pete’s Café & Bar, to name a few. And there will be live performances by local indie bands Pepper Rabbit, Very Be Careful and Helen Stellar.

  • 4pm-12am. Free. 4th Street and Main Street, Downtown (map).

Double Evil Dead Feature: Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness
I LOVE these movies — zombies, a resilient hero with bad luck, cursed tomes. Henrietta! Well, I like Evil Dead II more than Army of Darkness which was just an appeal to the mainstream audience. In any case, what better way to spend a Saturday night than with a couple of hilarious horror flicks? Might I recommend grabbing a couple of pints at Father’s Office down the street first to fuel the funny.

  • 7:30pm. $11. Aero Theatre, 1328 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica (map).

Muse til Midnight at LACMA
At LACMA’s two-part evening shindig, the artsy-fartsy folk will get to enjoy vaudeville performers, steampunk-ish crafts, live music and an Eakins’ exhibit featuring his late 19th-century paintings. The second half of the evening at 10pm takes place in the Steampunk Saloon at LACMA West’s penthouse terrace with an open bar, homemade moustache contests and live music The Unextraordinary Gentlemen. Sounds like a swank, fun evening.

  • 8:15p-12am. $42. LACMA, 5905 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

This Weekend: Kawaii Sales, Bloomfest LA, Blue Palms Beer Party

Friday, August 13

L.A.M.B. & Harajuku Lovers Sample Sale LA
For the first time ever in LA, Gwen Stefani’s two lines, L.A.M.B. and Harajuku Lovers, will be available at a sample sale. Normally her stuff is wayy too expensive for me to even consider, being “designer” and all but at this sale, everything will be up to 75% off. Kawaii bags, rocker-style clothes, hot shoes. RSVP here. BTW, credit cards only.

  • Friday, 8am-8pm; Saturday, 10am-6pm. Siren Studios, 6063 West Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood (map).

More kawaii stuff! A whole weekend with photobooths, djs, free gifts, Sapporo beer, food trucks and a pop-up store curated by JapanLA owner Jamie Rivadeneira. John Cusack Double Feature: Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer
“Gimme my 2 dollars!!!” Growing up, I loved these movies. Such great one-liners, including that one with the relentless paperboy going after his fee. And who could resist poor John Cusack, the adorable loser of these ’80s movies? Special guests will show up at the end of the screenings. No, not JC, although maybe. Rather, the writer/director of the films Savage Steve Holland as well as Curtis Armstrong, Bobcat Goldthwait and more.

  • 7:30pm. $12. The Cinefamily, 611 N Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles (map). (323) 655-2510.

This Weekend: Wonderland High Tea, Bourbon Night, Young Directors

I’m outtie again this weekend. Yet another 24 Hours of Lemons race I gotta go to. This one up in Sonoma. Sucks considering there are all these fun things going on in L.A. Anyway, have fun.

Royal/T’s Alice in Wonderland High Tea
Seems L.A. is going mad as a hatter for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland as evidence by all the high tea events. But Royal/T’s is sure to stand out, not only for its Japanese cosplay servers but the $25 high tea of playing cards tea sandwiches, a vanilla “Eat Me” cupcake, kobe beef slider, a cup of “Drink Me” Royal/T Green Milk Tea blend, blue mushroom-shaped meringues and Cheshire Cat macaroons with Earl Grey tea filling (both by BakeLab). Be sure to swing by on Saturday for the Wonderland-themed fashion show and to check out the newest exhibit, “The Never Ending Story: Fairytale, Fantasy and Obsession.”

Dead Author Readings at Upright Citizens Brigade
Witness the conversation between some of the greatest minds in literature. Or basically a verbal cat fight between dead authors J.D. Salinger (Marc Evan Jackson) and Edgar Allan Poe (Craig Cackowski) with H.G. Wells (Paul F. Tompkins) moderating. They can be so bitchy! Anyway the audience not only gets to listen in on this but they get to ask questions, too, as they’re transported to an alternate universe where these guys are still alive and living during the same era.

Say good-bye to the “last trucker bar in L.A.” with $2 Colt 45 Tall Boys and spun tunes by DJs Jimmy James and Eden Knievel. In the meantime, stop by the bar during the weekend for giveaways of the remaining memorabilia.

  • 8pm-2am. Stinkers, 2939 West Sunset Boulevard, Silver Lake (map). (323) 661-6007.

“In Bed Together” Opening at Royal/T

Flickr shot by fauxLAhipster

By fauxLAhipster

Since Caroline had to go out of town for her bf’s Lemons race, she asked me to cover this apparently uber-strict-guestlisty opening (only the opening was guestlisty; the exhibit is open to the public right now) of “In Bed Together” right off the heels of Royal/T’s insanely popular Hello Kitty Three Apples exhibit.

I was excited for this event for many reasons.

  1. I would finally get to taste Chef Ludo‘s “mouth orgasm” inducing treats
  2. It was technically an art opening and I’m always a big fan of anything arty
  3. It boasted the holy trifecta of parties: free booze, food and goodie bags

Buh-Bye Kitty: Hello Kitty Three Apples Exhibit’s Last Weekend

This weekend marks the last weekend for the Hello Kitty Three Apples Exhibit at Royal/T Cafe in Culver City before the cafe/art gallery makes way for the “In Bed Together” exhibit next week. So if you haven’t checked out the cutest little art exhibit ever along with its adorable pop-up store, this is your last chance. There are even a couple of parties to go out with a ME-YOW.

For Friday the 13th from 8pm to 2am, Hello Kitty goes ’80s goth for a Bats and Cats Masquerade. Goody bags for the first 100 visitors, dancing and a DJ, a performance group, a “Best Dressed” contest and you get to meet the Kitty herself!

Saturday is a fashion show party from 7 to 11pm with runway shows debuting Hello Kitty-inspired fashions that will be sold at the event. Again the first 100 party-goers score goody bags. But everyone gets to enjoy an interactive workshop by one of the designers as well as photo ops with HK. Unfortunately the Sanrio site says you need a ticket to watch the runway show but for some reason the event isn’t listed on Brown Paper Tickets site even though that’s where the link takes you. Hm.

But I highly recommend perusing the pop-up store. I found the cutest Tokidoki Hello Kitty iPhone cover and absolutely love it. And the Hello Kitty-inspired art itself is so fun. The photos with Lady Gaga decked out in HK fashions are pretty neato. And the cafe is even featuring a special Hello Kitty high tea.

EVENT: NOW THROUGH SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 15
