Blog Bite: Jacques Torres Wicked Hot Chocolate Mix at Madame Chocolat Beverly Hills

Hasty Torres by Caroline on Crack

Madame Chocolate Hasty Torres presenting her hot chocolate.

Renowned chocolatier Jacques Torres, aka Mr. Chocolate, makes one of the most amazing hot chocolate mixes I’ve ever had: Wicked Chocolate. The spiciness of ancho chili, allspice, cinnamon and chipotle chili peppers with that rich chocolate. The perfect mid-afternoon pick-me-up when mixed with steamed vanilla soy. Um. Yum!

When I was visiting New York years ago I had set foot into his Brooklyn store for the first time and instantly fell in love. With the chocolate chip cookies, the cookie mix (yes, cookie mix which makes these amazing cookies with huge chocolate chips) and the Wicked Chocolate mix.

Wicked Chocolate by Caroline on Crack

Beverly Hills Wicked Chocolate stash.

Unfortunately, Jacques Torres isn’t on the West Coast so I had to restock by either ordering online and paying the $25 shipping or have my sister who lives in NY mail me a box.

But for the holidays, Mr. Chocolate is available in L.A.! His wife, chocolatress Hasty Torres, is selling some of his chocolates, chocolate boxes AND most importantly Wicked Chocolate mix at her store Madame Chocolat in Beverly Hills as well as at her pop-up store at the Americana and cart at the Grove. The Grove cart closes up shop tonight but you can always swing by her chocolate heaven on Canon Drive.

And if you’re dying for some hot chocolate on the spot, at the BH store Hasty has her own mix which she makes with steamed milk and serves with a chocolate spoon!

Yeah, at first I thought the addition of the spoon was just craziness — chocolate overload. (Yeah, I guess there is no such thing.) But Madame Chocolat’s hot cocoa was actually all creamy chocolate without the cloying sweetness. The chocolate spoon added just the right amount of sugar and even more chocolate. Win win!

Madame Chocolat’s mix and her husband’s go for $20 each. There are still tins available so snap ‘em up!

Hasty loaded me up with some of hers and her husband’s chocolates and a package each of both of their hot chocolate mixes while I visited her store. She literally is a sweet woman. I can’t wait to try making my own winter cocktails with these.

Heads-up: For Valentine’s Day look for Jacques’ chocolates to return to the store. You’ll be able to make a special package combining bon bons from each chocolatier.

Hit the jump for a video of Jacques Torres making hot chocolate.

Spare Room Hollywood’s $75 Tequila Cocktail Debuts Tonight

Coctel Unico by Spare Room Hollywood

Coctel Unico by Spare Room Hollywood

Spare Room at the Hollywood Roosevelt is launching a $75 cocktail, Coctel Unico, tonight. Yup, a muy caro tequila drink.

This baby is made with Milagro Unico, a new “micro-distilled tequila with Milagro’s rarest and barrel-aged reserves” (from the press release) that isn’t available in stores or for distribution anywhere yet and once it is, the bottles, of which there are only 1,000, are projected to retail for $300 each. But Spare Room was lucky enough to score two bottles.

The bowling alley/cocktail lounge’s Director of Beverages Naomi Schimek said that in creating this special drink, she wanted to make sure the delicate spirit was showcased so she didn’t add too many mixers. And when she did it was only eyedropper-size amounts. “Unico is earthy agave with grapefruit and black pepper, opening up top vanilla and caramel notes. Very delicate on the palate,” says Naomi. You can still appreciate the rare tequila in this cocktail but enhanced with dry vermouth, Pernod and Aperol essences to bring out its flavor notes.

Or if you’d rather taste the spirit unenhanced, you can order it neat for the same price.

Would be the perfect gift for your favorite cocktail geek (ahem), or yourself!

The Ultimate Coffee Geek’s Travel Kit Guide: Taking Your Coffee Snobbery on the Road

Coffee by Caroline on Crack

Tastes so good when it hits your lips.

With the explosion of high-quality coffee places and roasters all over Los AngelesIntelligentsia, Handsome Coffee Roasters, LAMILLDripp and Brew Coffee Barthere’s bound to be a growing dependence and, let’s face it, addiction to that fine cup of Joe. For super picky coffee drinkers, workplace K-Cups and the regular drip just won’t do anymore.

Believe me, I understand. I am an admitted coffee snob. Here’s the basic setup that I bring everywhere with me, from the office to the road. Affordable and simple, and great for those just starting out.

What I like about this setup is it’s so simple and all I need is hot water but I can pretty much make coffee wherever; and I do. Now if only someone invented a coffee travel bag so I wouldn’t have to lug this stuff around in my reusable Fresh & Easy shopping bag.

Since I was curious about taking my coffee obsession to the next level, I asked renowned coffee geeks 2010 U.S. and World Barista Champion Michael Phillips of Handsome Coffee and Scoops Westside proprietor Matt Kang (Mattatouille) for what their suggestions for travelling java junkies who want to be able to make their black gold anywhere, especially with the holidays coming up. (My mom and pop make horrible coffee. Horrible! Sorry, M&D!)

Coffee at Akasha by Caroline on Crack

Even restaurants, like Akasha, are getting in the pourover act.

The Handsome Coffee Geek Travel Kit

Michael started by telling me what’s in his own coffee travel kit.

“My standard super travel kit that goes on pretty much every flight with me (TSA friendly):

This allows for a super accurate nerd brew to be made at 3,500 feet and all fits into my Patagonia midsize shoulder bag [could he be talking about this Daily Grind bag? heh] with my laptop, notepad, books and other travel goods.  The thermos fits in the outside pouch designed for water bottles, the Porlux slides into the Aeropress, your towel and filters can cram into the mug, the scale and coffee are on their own.

“This can be budgeted by dropping items in the following order with the following consequences:

  1. Drop scale – you can use the Aeropress reasonably accurately without a scale but as your travel coffee ages and elevations/pressure changes it is difficult to really “nail it.”
  2. Drop mug – you can almost always find a paper cup that will work but you have to be careful (the whole method of the aeropress involves pressing down on the receptacle) and if you’re going to the effort of making a fresh cup, don’t you want to drink it out of something nice?!?
  3. Drop slim bullet thermos – you can get hot water from a flight attendant/airport coffee shop/misc kettle in your travels but the nice pour that these guys have works great with the tiny mouth of the Aeropress.  It is also way more safe when you are stuck in an economy seat on U.S. air to have something so well sealed…
  4. Drop hand grinder – you can totally pre-grind your coffee for travel.  You could also just use Via, you savage…”

And for those going home for the holidays who don’t mind checking luggage, hit the jump for Michael’s more serious setup.

Twice the Vice Spirited Chocolates: So Good It’s Illegal

Top shelf chocolates by Caroline on Crack

Hmm, which to have first?

Twice the Vice, a chocolate company that just started last year in Santa Monica, has got my number. Belgian chocolates with a rich chocolate ganache infused with high-end liquor. Yes and oh yes! They’ve been touted by UrbanDaddy and Food Republic as the box of chocolates for men of taste but I say they work just fine for cocktail geeks of the female persuasion as well.

Dude chocolates by Caroline on Crack

Dude chocolates.

For serious, browse the selection online: single-malt, Kentucky bourbon, fine tequila or go for an assorted box of top-shelf spirits or classic cocktails.

There’s even a special collection for Big Lebowski fans: the Helluva Caucasian collection with White Russian Chocolates and artwork from BL Fest artist Bill Green.

But before you get all giddy and place your order, keep in mind that due to the extreme booziness of the chocolates, it’s currently illegal in 42 states! So only the following states can (legally) get ‘em: Arizona, California (yay!), Colorado, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri and Washington. But owner Craig Boreth says, “They have about as much alcohol by volume as a strong beer.  So, you’d probably suffer cocoa-butter induced seizures before getting a buzz.”

After scoring boxes of the Top-Shelf and Helluva Caucasian collections to sample, I’d say they’re almost worth getting in trouble for, especially that White Russian which makes me crave the real thing. But don’t take my word for it, I shared the chocolates with my co-workers, Mattatouille and my bf to get varying opinions on them as well.

Here are some soundbites of our taste test with Mark (a bon vivant), Bryn (a foodie mom), Mike (a junior bon vivant), Mattatouile (respected food blogger) and my boyfriend (a man of exceptional taste):

15-Year Glenlivet Scotch

  • Mark — “I was expecting some smokiness but it’s not and I like it. It’s like Johnny Walker, the blended Scotch instead of a single malt. Doesn’t have fire.”
  • Mattatouille — “Very strong scotch flavor. Not really smokey, more honey but caramelly. If you don’t like scotch I don’t think you’ll like this. If you can’t take alcohol neat. I’d like to have this with the scotch or with coffee.”

White Russian

  • Bryn — “The White Russian is good. I like eating the Dude’s face, too. And it’s not super boozy. It’s not bursting me in the face.”
  • Mattatouille — “The chocolate’s nice, not too dark. I like it.”
  • Bf — “This is good. You get just a little hint of the alcohol burn but just barely. Very tasty. Very accessible.”

El Diamante Reposado Tequila

  • Mark — “ACKKK! BLECH! It’s too harsh. It’s got that harshness like orange juice and toothpaste in the morning kind of smack in the face and I like tequila. It doesn’t taste like a smooth tequila. It almost tastes Cuervo-y.”
  • Bryn — “It’s got that chemical thing happening to it. It tastes chemicalness.”
  • Mike — “Oh yeah. It’s not good at all. It tastes like college. It doesn’t even have an alcohol burn coming down, it has a chemical burn coming down. It burns all the way down.”
  • Mattatouille — “Very tequila-y. You can definitely taste that it’s tequila. I would rather have this with tequila than the other ones with scotch and bourbon because I really don’t want to sully them.  “
  • Bf — “Tequila isn’t as good as a match to the chocolate.”

10-Year Eagle Rare Bourbon

  • Mike — “The bourbon tastes like what you read on the card, it tastes like a 10-year-old bourbon. And the scotch one just seems too smooth to be a 15. It’s so smooth it doesn’t have any of that peatiness or smokiness or bite. It doesn’t have character.”
  • Bf — “The bourbon flavor comes out more compared to how the scotch flavor does [in its chocolate]. Has more of the boozy flavor and less of the alcohol burn.”

Conclusion: All the taste testers agreed that they’d gladly pay $28 for a nine-piece box of these chocolates, especially favorites the Big Lebowski-inspired collection and the Eagle Rare bourbon, which actually isn’t available in a box. They do, however, have a Kentucky Bourbon one available which features Elijah Craig 18, Knob Creek 9 and Woodford Reserve Mint Julep. Yum!

All also said they can see enjoying the bourbon and scotch chocolates while sipping the liquid counterparts. As for the chocolate vehicle for the boozy ganache, all agreed it a smooth, rich and high-quality conveyance.

A Few of My Favorite Things From Unique LA & Artisanal LA

Bedford Falls Headwear by Caroline on Crack

Realize your inner Mae West.

This weekend was a double whammy of shopping events with Artisanal LA and Unique LA and even though I was supposed to be shopping for others there, I couldn’t help but covet a bunch of stuff for myself. Here are just a few of my favorite discoveries. And even though you may have missed the sales, not to fret, you can still buy these goodies online at their respective vendors. Happy holiday shopping!

Bedford Falls Headwear ($20-$70): When I saw all these lovely vintage-looking headbands with plumes and sparkle on display at the Unique LA booth, my inner Clara Bow squealed. So many beautiful handmade “fascinators” that I didn’t know which one to pick. Stuck between the choice of two — one dark red that would have been perfect for holiday parties and the other with a leather patch and a bit more showy tuft of feathers that would work well for a fancy night out at La Descarga — I just went with both which were about $15 each at the show. On the Web site, each fascinator is named after It girls from the past like Veronica Lake and Josephine Baker.

Beatrice Holiday handlebar bag by Caroline on Crack

Beatrice Holiday handlebar bag

Beatrice Holiday Bike Handlebar Purse ($54-$84): A stylish alternative to the usual bike basket. Each handcrafted bag is made out of vintage fabrics and is equipped with a strap so it can transition from your bike to your shoulder. Not big enough to hold groceries but the perfect size for toting your cell phone, wallet, keys and sunglasses.

Kauzbots ($24.99) are probably the only robots you can cuddle with. These stuffed toy robots are awfully cute and they even have a little heart in their back pocket that will most certainly belong to you. But the best part is that each robot represents a good cause, meaning that 10% of its proceeds go to a specific cause. There’s hot pink Kaprice for breast cancer, orange Karissa for world hunger/poverty and gray Kalvin for homelessness. Their available at stores like Fred Segal and Aahs but you can also purchase them on the Kauzbots Web site.

Graze Organic Reusable Sandwich, Snack and Lunch Bags ($24-$38): What’s cool about these bags is that you can just throw them in your washing machine after each use. Perfect for your favorite environmentalist. The newly launched totes usually run $29.95 but were $28 at the holiday pop-up.

The Weekend Store Vintage Map Necklace by Caroline on Crack

The Weekend Store Vintage Map Necklace

Weekend Store Los Angeles Vintage Map ($28): Cute way to celebrate your favorite city. At the Unique LA booth, I didn’t see any L.A. necklaces, just this Venice one, but looks like you can order them online at the store’s site.

Talking Carl T-shirt ($20): OMG, I LOVE the Talking Carl app on my iPhone. He’s so adorable and bratty, mimicking everything you say in that high-pitched voice. So I was elated when I came across this T-shirt at the Three Apparel booth. Three Apparel is a local t-shirt shop which features original artwork on its tees. Well, except for the Talking Carl one which TC’s maker, Yann Le Coroller, had asked Three Apparel to create a tee for.

Cast Iron Gourmet’s Couch Mix ($11, 2 for $20) is the couch potato’s trail mix created by chef/owner of Cast Iron Gourmet, Rashida Purifoy. A brilliant amalgamation of caramelized bacon, dried fruit, chocolate and nuts, Rashida had originally created it for her crew of friends to munch on over Sunday afternoon football.

Cast Iron Gourmet's Couch Mix by Caroline on Crack

Cast Iron Gourmet's Couch Mix

At the moment, the mix isn’t available for purchase online, unfortunately. But Cast Iron Gourmet will do a pop-up at Eagle Rock Brewery January 1, where she said she’ll most definitely have some for sale. Or you can always make do with the tasty bourbon bacon chutney which is sooo delicious with the bacon mayo pimento cheese spread — both available online. YUM!

Kim White Equestrian Belt in Pewter ($110): Dammit, I should have bought this when I saw it at Unique LA. There, it was $55, which I guess is the wholesale price. Argh! Made with leather with a metallic finish, it’s so unique and stylish.

Sugarbird Sweets & Teas Gift Basket: Came across this adorable tea gift basket which contained sugar snowflakes, madeleines, tea and homemade marshmallows. The basket at the Artisanal LA booth was about $39 but you could put your own together via the Sugarbird Web site which even sells a wire basket ($5) so you could together your own.
