Dear Caroline on Crack: Veggie and Beer Option in Downtown?

Delirium Noel at Wurstkuche by Caroline on Crack

Where can one get great beer and veggie food in DTLA?

A request from a Facebook friend:

Kevin K.
Hey Caroline,

A friend I’ve known since 5th grade, but haven’t seen since high school is coming to town next week, staying at the Bonaventure. I need a reco for a cool restaurant bar within walking distance of the BV with vegetarian/pescatarian options and a killer beer list. It’ll be on a Friday, and I don’t want to have to shout at her. A tall order, I know. This is why I come to the master.

Cheers,
Kevin

Hey there, I don’t know of a place that fits that description within walking distance of the Bonaventure. There’s that Bonaventure Brewing Company, which is located on the 4th floor of the BV Hotel. I haven’t been there before but they appear to have some fish options: http://www.bonaventurebrewing.com/dinner.php as well as beer.

And there’s the Library Bar which is a little further away on 6th and Hope. I love that they carry Craftsman there. Only thing is that it can get loud in there and the service is spotty. Good food though.

Kevin K.
You are *awesome*! thank you thank you. If I were willing to drive a short distance, would that open up any stellar options?

Have you tried the Edison?

thanks again

Caroline On Crack
Hmm, I’d say Wurstkuche in the Arts District.

As for the Edison, that will be a CF on Friday unless you go before 9 or 10. Love it there though. Great cocktails. Also, you have to dress up.

Kevin K.
You are a genius!

Kevin K.
Hey Caroline,

Just dropping by to say thanks. Wurstkuche was *perfect!* My friend and I both loved it. Thanks again,

Kevin

Caroline On Crack
Oh, awesome. I LOVE Wurstkuche! Glad it hit the spot.

Dear Caroline on Crack: Where To Get the Last Word Cocktail?

Last Word by ReeseCLloyd

Last Word by ReeseCLloyd

Hi!

So. I recently decided to ease away from the wine (headaches & hangovers)and move to cocktails (usually no hangovers). I’ve been reading your blog for a long time and am excited to go back through old posts and find some new suggestions (especially bourbon and gin drinks).

Anyway, I was in New Orleans last week and spent a lot of time talking to different bartenders and a couple of them were schooling me on classics and one in particular called The Last Word. It was strong and amazing.

Apparently it’s a prohibition-era drink that’s making a comeback and I was wondering if you’ve had one anywhere in LA? (apologies in advance if you’ve written about it before, I have a terrible memory and an inability to “search” apparently.)

Dear Caroline on Crack: Downtown Hotel Bar That Screams Sex?

Rick's Place at Figueroa Hotel

Photo from Figueroa Hotel’s site.

Hey, fruitcake.

T-Dawg, here. Long time no see. Hope you’re well.

Two things (three things, actually):

1. You’re awesome.

2. I’m surprised that Del’s Saloon in Santa Monica isn’t mentioned on your site (or perhaps I missed it). Real Cadillac margaritas (super strong, with Cointreau and Grand Marnier) for $7. After drinking two — in rocks glasses, mind you — my friend stumbled to my car, puked on the seat, and passed out in it. I think we can both appreciate that kind of endorsement.

3. Can you recommend a good downtown hotel bar? Something that screams “sex” would be ideal.

Thanks,

T-Dawg

Dear Caroline on Crack: Hollywood Happy Hour With Patio?

Picture 2.png
Photo from XIV

Hi Caroline on Crack,

You are my new hero. I dated this jerk douchebag who took me to lots of nice places and I always oohed and ahhed at how many hot new spots he knew of. But he was a total jerk and I’m not seeing him anymore. At first, it was so hard to figure out where to go and what to do — and it made me think I missed him — but I really just needed to go to cool places with people I actually enjoy spending time with. I had no idea how to go about doing that but with your Web site I have a newfound motivation! I am excited to explore the stuff you suggest and use the resources on your page. So THANK YOU!

I have a question — where can I go near West Hollywood, Melrose/Fairfax, Hollywood for happy hour that has an outside patio that is sunny and not smokey? Right now my go-to place is Belmont but the outside is really smokey and not exactly sunny.

Thanks!

Dear Caroline on Crack: A Classy Birthday With Flip Cup Potential on the Westside?

Dear Caroline on Crack,

A friend of mine is looking to have her 30th birthday somewhere on the Westside on a Saturday night that has good beer or at least good drinks, an outdoor area where people can be loud, yet is still kind of classy. The new Home in Silver Lake is a great example of what she’s looking for, but it’s pretty far away for a mostly Westside crowd.

Father’s Office would be awesome but it’s just not good for large parties with 20ish (max 30) people because of the whole waiting-in-line-regardless-of-who’s-inside thing. I guess it doesn’t HAVE to have an outdoor area, but… it would be ideal. I know she really wants to be able to play flip cup but has pretty much accepted that that’s near impossible. Any ideas? Thanks a lot — love your blog!

Thanks,

Flip Cup Contestant #2

Yo,

That girl’s sister and brother-in-law are coming out for the long weekend. They’re big on bars. Good, fun cool ones.

This is your area “expertise,” what’cha got for recommendations?

Dear Caroline on Crack: Restaurant for Parents’ Anniversary?

Dear Caroline on Crack,

My parents’ anniversary is coming up. We are looking for a restaurant my whole family (10 people) could go to celebrate for probably like $75 a person anywhere from the Westside to downtown. Open to any cuisine, meat or fish. What do you think?

Thanks,

The Good Daughter
