This Weekend: Tiki Time at 1886, Unique LA Summer, Bluegrass Pig Roast

It’s already August? Where’d the summer go? Better get the last days of the season in by enjoying them the following ways.

Friday, July 29

New Summer Cocktail Menu at 1886
Nothing says summer like tropical drinks and Marcos Tello and the 1886 crew know it. Their new 16-drink summer cocktail menu debuts this week and features tiki favorites like the Zombie, QB Cooler and Pina Colada as well as twists on classics like  Cherry Daiquri and Pisco Punch. But I can’t wait to try the Media Park Swizzle with Bols Genever, sherry, ginger, Falernum syrup and lime. And the Vintage Caprice, a cocktail aged in a bourbon cask, sounds like a must-have.

Tales of the Cocktail 2011 Bar Room Brawl People’s Champion: Roger Room + Cocktail Recipes

Damian Windsor by Caroline on Crack

Damian and his winning smile and cocktail-making skills.

So maybe LA missed out on a couple of awards at this year’s Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards (Best American Cocktail Bar and American Bartender of the Year) but the boys of Roger Room in West Hollywood brought back the People’s Champion award for Moet Hennessy USA’s 2011 Bar Room Brawl, one of the largest competitions at the annual cocktail industry event! RR bartenders Damian Windsor and Jason Bran and Eric “ET” Tecosky (from Jones) competed against bar teams from Little Branch (NY), The Burritt Room (San Francisco), Sable (Chicago), Eastern Standard (Boston) and Teardrop (Portland), and came up on top, as voted by the people.

Each team had to create four original cocktails using Grand Marnier, Hennessy, Belvedere Vodka and 10 Cane Rum. Here are the Roger Room’s winning cocktails for you to try out at home. Variations of the Spiced Mule and Four Aces are currently on the bar menu but since the other cocktails had appeared in various forms in previous seasonal menus, the guys can do it up for you on request.

This Weekend: Belgian Beer Garden, Chanel for Sale, Princess Bride Drinking Game

It’s my big move weekend! So excited. OK, not really. Because that will mean that I probably won’t be able to go to any of these fun events. Sad trombone.

Friday, July 22

The Paper Bag Princess Vintage Super Summer Sale
I always drive pass by the store on Olympic and drool over its gorgeous dresses in the window display. So happy happy joy joy that they’re having a week-long sale with items marked up to 90% off. They said there will be no less than 30 racks packed with finds 75-90% off. Peruse designer handbags, costume jewelry and even bridal gowns.

  • 11am. Paper Bag Princess, 8818 West Olympic Boulevard, Beverly Hills (map).

Saturday, July 23

ColLAboration #5: Belgian Independence Day
My second favorite Independence Day celebrating awesome beer-making Belgium. For $15 (plus 69-cent service fee) you get a limited-edition Duvel collector’s goblet as well as entry into future ColLAboration beer gardens. It’s highly recommended you buy your membership glass in advance since there will be a limited amount sold at the event. If you buy from The Full Pint, you get three beer tokens (normally $6 each) and the goblet and admission for $24!

  • 12-9pm. Admission: $15-$24. 8950 Sunset Boulevard, West Hollywood (map).

A Drinking Game: The Princess Bride
A drinking game around The Princess Bride sounds like a really good time. The rules? The audience and the actors — yes, it’s a live performance — take a swig on specific keywords and cues signaled by a bell. How much do you want to bet that “Inconceivable” makes it as a drink cue? Molly Malone’s will have cheap drafts for sale and there will also be props like swords and masks to really get in the mood.

  • 7-10pm. $10. Molly Malone’s, 575 S Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles (map). (323) 935-1577.

Sunday, July 24

GLAAD Hancock Park: Top Chef Invasion
This intimate food fest with tasting stations featuring Comme Ca, Dominick’s and Little Next Door and a Top Chef Challenge hosted by Susan Feniger is all for a great cause: the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). General admission is $100 but for the Platinum Level tickets ($150) you get judging entry to the chef challenge!

There will also be culinary demos as well as a nice sampling of wines and spirits.

Where Have All the L.A. Bartenders Gone? They’re in NOLA for Tales of the Cocktail 2011

Black Market's Tricia, Pablo and Mia by Caroline on Crack

Two out of three Black Market's bartenders pictured here are off in the Big Easy.

If you’re a cocktail geek, chances are you’ve heard of the annual Tales of the Cocktail event in New Orleans and even plan your social calendar around it. Every year drink slingers, liquor companies and cocktail enthusiasts do their liver stretches and build up their alcohol tolerance before descending on the Big Easy for booze-fueled mingling, seminars, parties and competitions. So now through Sunday, when you visit your usual watering hole and wonder where your fave bartender is, he/she is most likely in NOLA. But to save you from that disappointment, here’s a list of which of our esteemed Los Angeles barsmiths will be out of town this week and competing in contests with the hopes of bringing back some impressive titles for L.A.

Next Door Lounge’s Joseph Brooke threw down at the Viva! Sangrita Nationals yesterday. His winningest recipe below.

The Roger Room’s Damian Windsor, Jason Bran and Zack Patterson will go up against three bars from other cities (boo! hiss!) at the Moët Hennessy USA’s Bar Room Brawl on Friday. Last year, LA’s own the Varnish snagged the people’s hearts and choice award so good luck to our guys for holding onto the title for our city.

Naomi Schimek of Hollywood Roosevelt’s Spare Room is competing at the USBG Bacardi Pina Colada competition (hosted by LA’s own Dan “The Imbiber” Dunn) on Friday night. Fingers crossed her Havana A Go Go recipe wins.

Nightlife ringmaster Aidan Demarest, also from the Spare Room, is hosting Cointreau and Saveur Magazine’s 2011 Mix-Off Competition on Friday where he’ll announce the Next Bar Star.

Other LA bar folks who aren’t competing but will be off at Tales: Adrian Biggs (La Descarga), Chris Bostick (The Varnish), Steve Livigni (La Descarga/Harvard & Stone), Giovanni Martinez (Sadie), Pablo Moix (Black Market Liquor Bar/Harvard & Stone/La Descarga), Lacey Murillo (Black Market), Mia Sarazen (Harvard & Stone/Black Market), Juan Sevilla (Big Bar), Alex Straus (Hemingway’s Lounge), Devon Tarby and Marcos Tello (The Varnish).

Not to say that means there’s no reason to go out cocktailing this weekend. Fortunately there are still ample good bartenders — like Tricia Alley of Black Market,  Matthew Biancaniello of Library Bar, Kiowa Bryan of Eveleigh, Julian Cox of Playa and Rivera and Devon Espinosa of Tasting Kitchen and tonight’s Chaya event — holding down the fort.

If you’re feeling ambitious (and happen to have kaffir lime leaves and the like in your kitchen), here’s Joseph Brooke’s exotic sangrita recipe for you to try at home.

Singhrita
By Joseph Brooke, Next Door Lounge

  • 4 liters tomato water
  • 1 handful kaffir lime leaves
  • 1/2 handful cardamom pods, cracked
  • 1 tbsp ground ginger
  • 1 tbsp turmeric
  • 1 tbsp coriander
  • 1 tbsp cumin
  • 1 tbsp dark chili powder
  • 2 tbsp sea salt
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tbsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne powder
  • 6 tbsp spicy pickled mango chili
  • 3 mangoes, peeled & juiced
  • 4oz fresh lime juice
  • 4oz fresh orange juice
  • 6 green serrano peppers
  • 1-2 habanero peppers
  • 1 tbsp canola oil

METHOD (makes about 3.5 liters)

1. Boil tomato water with cardamom and lime leaf. Reduce by 1/4 and let cool.
2. Combine mango chili, serrano peppers, habanero peppers and canola oil in a blender and puree until smooth.
3. Add all remaining ingredients into tomato reduction, adjusting citrus and mango juice to taste.
4. Add mango/pepper puree according to desired level of heat.
5. Shake vigorously and chill. Serve in a garam-masala-rimmed shot glass. Sip alongside a tall shot of Ocho Anejo (the ’10).

Vodvil: Never-Ending Game Night in West Hollywood

Vodvil game room by Caroline on Crack

Game on at Vodvil.

When I first heard about Vodvil, I just didn’t get it. In its press release the brand-new bar/restaurant on Fairfax Avenue was described as a “sexy and smart new entertainment venue offering game night for grown-ups.” Heh? So naturally come preview night I had to check it out.

And, I’m glad I did because no amount of pre-opening press could aptly describe what Vodvil is because you really have to be there to “get it.” There is nothing like it. But, basically, you know trivia night at your favorite bar? That’s Vodvil every night (well, except Monday when it’s closed). So imagine that same high energy, competitive atmosphere and chatty MCs all the time. Either you’re into that or you just want a quiet place to nurse your cocktail. Since I’m a bar purist of sorts, I’m in the latter camp.

Shall We Play a Game?

Vodvil bartender by Caroline on Crack

What's your pleasure?

Sure Vodvil has cocktails and cocktail punches by big guy Alex Straus of Hemingway’s Lounge in Hollywood and nostalgically fun bar bites like pigs in a blanket and pot pies but I can only take so much zaniness and stimulation. I can see this being a great place for a group of 20-30-something friends to celebrate a birthday, bachelorette night, singles mingle and other events where people go “Wooo!”

And I’d love to do just that on special occasions; nosh on pretzel bites and tipple Paul Lynde Punch (love that name!) and compete for game tokens and bragging rights. But, I’m thinking it’s only really fun if you’re with a bunch of bffs, or you’re super social like Ferris Bueller. You can hang out at the bar and people watch and maybe play a round, but crotchety solo drinkers (me) who don’t like activities with their cocktails may want to slink on up the street to the Dime.

From Grubstreet LA:

Clearly, this is not the spot to go to have that relationship conversation.

If you do want to stick around, Vodvil features a different theme every night like “Face the Music,” Word Games or trivia night where it’s $6 to play all night and people compete for tokens to buy candy and the like from the vending machine or make a donation to the venue’s cause of the month. And I admit, the games can be a bit contagious. While my bf and I were just sitting at the bar, even though we didn’t have an answer sheet to mark off we found ourselves shouting out the answers, which you’re really not supposed to do. And when it came time for Word Game with LA restaurants as the theme there was no holding me back.

Falafel sliders by Caroline on Crack

Falafel sliders.

The colorful space, designed by the same firm responsible for Red O and W Hotel Hollywood’s Bliss Spa, has a main room with couches and banquettes as well as a bar area; a private room behind the stage for private parties; and a karaoke room.

“I’m kind of disappointed it’s a little too modern,” said one of the preview guests, and I’m inclined to agree. I guess I was hoping with its ’70s throwback that it would sport rec room wood paneling and vintage furniture. But instead it has a much cleaned-up, IKEA feel. Not that that’s bad, it’s just that vintage totally would have rounded out this theme of “’70s game show vibe” nicely.

Cocktails and Comfort Food

The cocktail menu is vodka intensive but light and girly. There are four punches ($40-$44) that serve four, perfect for that group of friends; five specialty cocktails ($10); three ultra sweet-sounding dessert drinks ($10-$12); mocktails ($4). Here’s a sample of the offerings:

  • Fairfax Scorpion Punch: Plymouth Gin, Gran Sierpe Pisco, Don Q Rum, orgeat, orange juice, passion fruit puree
  • Drink Martindale: Absolut Vodka, muddled cucumber, lemon juice, mint, champagne
  • Center Square: Four Roses Bourbon, green apple puree, mint
  • In the __, Bob: Plymouth Gin, strawberry puree, soda water
  • Cookies and Cream: Don Q Rum, Tres Leches, cookies and cream
Cocktail punches by Caroline on Crack

Cocktail punches.

The Drink Martindale would be perfect for those who don’t fancy the taste of booze and prefer something that tickles rather than buzzes. I couldn’t really taste the apple puree in the Center Square nor the booze but I loved the simple summeriness of the In the ___, Bob’s strawberries.

As for the comfort food, which was created by Executive Chef Jamie Lauren (Top Chef), since I’m doing veggie/fish right now I could only really sample the cheese caramel kettle corn, smoked salmon on bagel chip and the falafel sliders on Hawaiian sweet rolls. The salmon bites were my favorites but the falafel sliders were a bit dry. Surprisingly I wasn’t too crazy about the cheese caramel kettle corn, think caramel corn with a cheese dust. It had that addictiveness of kettle corn but wasn’t as pleasurable to eat. And combined with the cocktails that was just too much sugar for me.

End Game

I can’t see Vodvil being my destination drink or food place but for sure a destination fun place, like a bowling alley, karaoke parlor or rollerskating rink, except with better fare. Will that be enough to keep the room packed? You tell me.

The Bartender Next Door: Joseph Brooke at Hollywood’s New Next Door Lounge

Next Door Lounge's Joseph Brooke by Caroline on Crack

Gotta love how Next Door Lounge's Joe Brooke presents a drink.

I first remembered barman Joseph Brooke’s name when he worked with Vincenzo Marianella at Copa d’Oro in 2009. I had seen him around before but since I’m horrible with names I couldn’t remember his. One night at Copa he had just finished telling me about how he was competing on this new reality show, On the Rocks: The Search for America’s Top Bartender,  which he went on to win by the way. And afterward as I walked out and bid him a farewell, I yelled, “Bye, Gus!” (The name of his co-worker Gus McShane.) “It’s Joe,” he said, smiling. Of course I didn’t hear him but my friend who was with me at the time said, “I think he said his name is Joe.” Oops. Anyway, haven’t forgotten his name since.

From there, I went on to realize that Joe’s a genuinely good guy. Sure, he’s really easy on the eyes and does his job with mesmerizing flare but the man also knows his drinks and makes tasty cocktails with infectious enthusiasm. I’ve followed Joe to the Edison where he served as director of spirits for a couple years and to his newest gig as head barman at Next Door Lounge in Hollywood where I visited him there for the first time during a press preview.

The 4,000-square-foot Next Door Lounge, located on Highland Avenue next door to casual eatery The Corner, is decorated in a similar vein to the Edison. Apparently it used to have fire pits, a waterfall and burlesque dancers, but they have since done away with all that to focus on that 1920s speakeasy theme, complete with a piano, chandeliers and plush leather couches.

In With the New Cocktails

For the preview, press was invited to try out the cocktail menu which featured a mix of classics like Clover Club, French 75, Moscow Mule and Tequila Daisy as well as modern drinks created by Joe. Apparently, even though the bar just opened, the cocktail list already went through a change.

Turns out Joe didn’t create the whole menu initially, just three of the cocktails. A bit short-sighted on the venue’s part considering his illustrious cocktail background. Fortunately, thanks to a post by fellow booze blogger Thirsty in LA pointing that out, Joe was granted the freedom to have at the menu.

During the preview, I tried the following cocktails.

The Bump-Off by Caroline on Crack

The Bump-Off: Sagatiba Pura, ginger syrup, orgeat, lemon juice. Joe said he wanted to call this "Goldfish" because of the seemingly floundering orange peel garnish.

Volstead & Vice by Caroline on Crack

Volstead & Vice: Ilegal Mezcal Joven, Pernod Absinthe, cucumber water, agave nectar, lime juice. With mezcal and absinthe, this might intimidate most but the cucumber and agave really make it approachable. Smokey but refreshing.

Brass Flower by Caroline on Crack

Brass Flower: Plymouth Gin, elderflower liqueur, grapefruit juice, prosecco. I usually don't like grapefruit juice but its bitter edge was softened by the elderflower liqueur here. This elegant, classic-esque cocktail was actually the first one Joe ever came up with when he worked at Bar Marmont so holds a special place in his heart.

Drink prices here are what you’d expect for this part of town, $12-$14. But I’m really curious to see what sort of crowd this bar, off the beaten Hollywood bar hop path, attracts in the long run since when we went it was filled with media types. I had heard it described as “glamorous but laid back.” Hmm.

Where To Sit…and Not To Sit

The space itself is gorgeous with a variety of seating areas — large wooden communal dinner tables, high tops, low couches with ottomans. But my favorite place to sit, of course, is at the bar. Not only for Joe but the other bartender, Shea Lewis, who was juggling bottles, flipping them behind his back and performing the same sort of bar acrobatics I had seen in Barcelona. Wonder what he’d do with a Sazerac?

In the works for the space — yes, they’re still building stuff — is an actual speakeasy hidden in the bowels of the building in the place of what used to be a swingers club that came complete with stage, an upstairs area for who knows what and an extra-large hot tub. Remnants of its lurid past have since been removed and, with a good scrubbing, it’s in the process of being transformed into an elegant space to grab a secret drink. (Photos of the space and more of Joe after the jump.)

In the meantime, pull up to the bar and order up a cocktail from Joe. Once you do, I bet you won’t forget his name.

Drink tip: The Dame Next Door, the drink with the stenciled key, was actually made by Damian Windsor (Roger Room, Ice Ice Shavie) and meant to be a riff off the Algonquin. It’s made with Canadian Club 12 year, dry vermouth, pineapple juice, pasteurized egg white, Angostura bitters and clove-infused pineapple gomme syrup. Joe contributed the syrup which he created with tips from The Spare Room’s Naomi Schimek.
