The Bruery, one of my favorite SoCal breweries, is celebrating its 3rd anniversary. That means it’s been spreading joy and happiness through its tasty brews for only three years. And, this Placentia-based beermaker is going to do up its celebration BIG by combining it with a local craft beer festival. So not only will you get a chance to taste Bruery favorites like Rugbrod and Orchard White, but brews from Black Market Brewing Company, Craftsman, Firestone Walker and Ladyface Ale Companie!

The event takes place at The Phoenix Club in Anaheim and will have food available for purchase as well as cheese and snack stations by The Bruery Provisions.

Tickets: You can either do general admission for $35, which gets you a souvenir glass and 10 4-ounce tasters (additional tasting tickets are $1) or do it up like a balla and get the VIP tickets for $50, which gives you access to the Rare Bruery Beer section and six tastings. Take your pick of rarities like 100% Barrel Aged Cuir, Melange #1, Melange #3, Bottleworks XII, The Wanderer, Black Tuesday (!), Chocolate Rain (!!), Marrón Acidifié, ISO:FT, Oude Tart, Acer Quercus, Pinotlambicus, Barrel Fermented Autumn Maple.

I went to the Bruery’s Reserve Initiation Party earlier this year at the Phoenix Club and even though it was packed it was funnn. Made lots of new friends and drank a lot of awesome beer. So I’ve no doubt this is going to be a blast considering there are even more breweries involved.

Just remember to bring a designated driver; it’s only $5 admission for the DD!

A Few of My Favorite Things at Wood & Vine

Holland's Old Fashioned by Caroline on Crack

Holland's Old Fashioned with Bols Genever, sugar, Angostura, lemon twist.

Wood & Vine is one of my favorite places to dine whenever I’m in Hollywood to catch a movie at the ArcLight or kill some time before Hemingway’s Lounge opens up. It’s a gorgeous venue with a beautiful bar that greets you at the front of the house, followed by a second level for dining tables and comfy armchairs. Outside offers more dining tables, a lounge area and a large table with a firepit in the middle. Perfect for enjoying bar bites and drinks during a cool spring evening.

And even though the restaurant feels and looks awfully stately, the staff is helpful and down-to-earth nice so you don’t feel embarrassed for showing up to dinner in your Casual Friday/tourist attire.

Charcuterie by Caroline on Crack

Unfortunately this wasn't my order of charcuterie.

The “farm-to-table” menu, created by Gavin Mills (formerly sous chef of Bastide), is not intimidatingly expensive, ranging in price from $8 carrot soup to $20 grilled flat iron steak. Everything is basically small plates, which my bf hates because he says it’s just never enough. But we found that when we order three plates and a dessert we leave satisfied.

I’m always tempted to get a selection of cheese and charcuterie but bf doesn’t really eat meat. A shame considering the chef breaks down a whole pig once a week to make that charcuterie, using every bit of it!

The cocktail menu has a classic simplicity, echoing the farmer’s market freshness of the dishes. This is showcased in the Rodia’s Garden cocktail with cucumber vodka, lavender syrup, celery and absinthe. It’s served up but very refreshing. I would enjoy this on a sunny day on the patio. Too bad the restaurant doesn’t open til 6pm. The Bumblebee with Rittenhouse Rye is like one of my favorite gin drinks, Bee’s Knees, but with rye. Yum!  And I loved the genever version of the Old Fashioned, the Holland’s Old Fashioned. It was maltier and not as sweet as the traditional cocktail, which was fine with me since I’m usually put off by the sugariness of the classic.

By the way, they have a Black Manhattan cocktail with Averna Amaro but since I’m somewhat of a Manhattan purist I stayed away from it. The server said that it’s pretty sweet anyway. Meh.

Beer drinkers will be pleased by the selection of brew: Deschutes Black Butte Porter, Allagash White and Stone IPA, to name a few, priced $6 to $8. There’s also a bottle of Allagash Curieux for $35 and Stone Smoked Porter for $14. Only issue I had, though, is that they served the beer in a chilled glass. But at least the beer wasn’t chilled, too.

After the jump are a few of my favorite things at Wood & Vine, taken with my brand-new T3i, which I’m still trying to get the hang of. (Case in point: a green photo of the roasted beet salad I shot.)

This Weekend: Free Cupcakes & Wine, Rooftop Beer Fest, Pirates’ Bacon Buffet

Get a group of friends together, break out the Red Rum and have yourself a blanket party. You and your bff can be extra creepy by dressing up like the twins.

Game on!

***CONTEST CLOSED***

You know how I was going on and on about how fun it was to bowl, play board games and drink cocktail punches at the Spare Room in Hollywood? Well, now’s your chance to give it a try. Beer Belly: Mom & Pop Beer Bar Never Looked So Good

Jimmy and Yume Han by Caroline on Crack

Jimmy and Yume Han of Beer Belly.

Beer Belly craft beer bar is opening in Koreatown this Friday, and it seems to possess all the elements of what make a beer bar great: 1) an impressive selection of affordably priced, handcrafted beer on taps; 2) tasty bar bites; 3) beer-serious owners; 4) knowledgeable beertenders; and 5) parking.

The Bruery's Mischief Gone Wild by Caroline on Crack

The Bruery's Mischief Gone Wild from Jimmy's private stash.

The owners, Jimmy and Yume Han, are so young, attractive and hip, I wondered what their intentions were for opening up such a place. But after interviewing them for LA Weekly’s Squid Ink, getting past their sound byte tendencies and learning of their passion for craft beer as well as checking out their new digs, I see that they’re really serious about it all. They may be fairly new to the beer world but they’re eager to learn, open to suggestions and always willing to try something new.

And the beer community has embraced them, garnering them advice from the best in the business, like Ryan Sweeney of the Surly Goat and Verdugo Bar, Mark Craftsman of Craftsman Brewing Company and of course the Beer Chick herself, Christina Perozzi, who had not only trained Beer Belly’s staff of beertenders but helped the Hans curate their tap selection. Although according to her, they already had a good grasp of beer and “get it.”

During my sneak peek visit last week, I got to check out what they’re planning to have on tap for their grand opening night this Friday: beauties like The Bruery’s Rugbrod and Craftsman Cabernale. At the time there was also Black Market Brown Ale, one of my new favorites, but Jimmy said he might have to switch it up since he’s been drinking that and the Eagle Rock Populist IPA while setting up the bar. Who could blame him? But I do really hope it’s still there for the opening.

Beer Belly interior by Caroline on Crack

Don't mind the dust. They're still setting up.

There will be a rotating list of beers on 12 taps which Jimmy promises will be recession-friendly, “nothing over $10.” And in the fridge is a selection of bottled beer like Rogue Chocolate Stout, Dogfish Head’s Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew as well as picks from Jimmy’s own private stash, a collection he’s amassed over the years with rarities like The Bruery’s Mischief Gone Wild.

For non drinkers who tag along with their beer-drinking friends, there is also a nice selection of artisanal sodas like Blenheim Ginger Ale (yay!) and Waialua Mango Soda. And a couple bottles of wine for those into that.

Naturally there will also be food, but a small and simple selection of shareable dishes. The night I went they had specially made boar bratwurst by Grindhaus Sausage Truck served with highly addictive onion stout jam that I wanted to use on EVERYthing. There was also asparagus, French fries with potato aioli featuring bacon fat and roasted beets and tofu salad with Asian pear and honey sesame vinaigrette. There was talk about meatball skewers but unfortunately they were not yet available.

Beer Belly bar bites by Caroline on Crack

Beer Belly bar bites. Say that 5x fast.

The bar is actually set up looking more like a restaurant than a beer bar. There aren’t bar stools at the bar or high tops, mayhaps due to license restrictions, but there is a drink rail. And seating is restaurant style with table seating at a bench along the wall and a couple of tables by the front, floor-to-ceiling window. It’ll seat 35 comfortably but 50 folks can squeeze in.

The space, designed by MAKE Architecture (who did Bodega Wine Bar), is beautiful and modern what with three different stains of mahogany on the walls and even ceilings, a very shiny concrete floor. Outside, striking street art by MR44 wraps around the exterior.

Beer Belly definitely stands out in this area of Korean barbecue joints, mom and pop shops and karaoke studios. A good thing considering it’s located off the street, tucked in away off the main drag. Hopefully, since it’s in walking distance of the Wiltern, possesses its own parking lot and offers a such a well-done beer list, it’ll be a destination for beer connoisseurs. Add to that that Biergarten, home of the Glutster burger and a decent beer selection of its own, is just up the street (less than a mile away) and you’ve got yourself a nice little beer bar crawl.

More photos of Beer Belly after the jump.
