Villains Tavern’s 3 Fun Ways To Get Drunk in the Daytime

La Barbie by Caroline on Crack

The La Barbie on the new spring menu was named after a drug dealer with long blonde hair.

Because drinking isn’t fun enough, Villains Tavern presents three fun ways to get drunk at its new weekly party — Day Drinking BBQ — which kicks off tomorrow at 1pm!

  1. Sno Cone Fix ($9-$12) is made with your choice of fruit, fruit syrup and liquor on a bed of shaved ice.
  2. The new spring cocktail menu which features my new favorites the Geryon with Makers 46, kumquats, grapefruit, lemon with bitters and the La Barbie with Hacienda Tequila, Aperol, citrus, red pepper, lemon, cranberry and Tapatio.
  3. And mellow things off with a beer in a bag, naturally. Your choice of Tecate, Bud Light and Schlitz for $3 each.

And to prepare your stomach for the onslaught of booze, there’s the fresh-off-the-grill Demon Burger with bacon cherry marmalade. Afterward, stare bleary-eyed at artworks featured in the pop-up Pretty/Tough art show or drunken dance to hillbilly jazz troupe, The Evangenitals. Great name. Heh. Sounds like it’s gonna be a good time on that patio.

Nike’s She Runs LA Celebration: Mike Posner and Teenybopper Revisited

Mike Posner sings to a fan by Caroline on Crack

25 years ago, this was my dream. Except that guy would have been Duran Duran's John Taylor.

For this year’s fun run, Nike decided to try something different. Leaving behind its Run Hit Wonder and Human Race formats, it went with a digital race, She Runs LA, where runners could run whenever and wherever they wanted within a 24-hour period by logging their miles via Nike’s GPS gadgets and uploading their runs onto the Nike Running site. Pretty neato and futuristic idea. But that meant no actual finish line, no bananas and freebie juices and no finish line photos of sweaty, puffy but accomplished runners.

Nike products by Caroline on Crack

Lots and lots of Nike commercials during the event.

So Nike organized a celebration at Nokia Theatre in downtown LA where after their digital 10Ks all She Runs LA participants were invited to celebrate with Bliss spa mini treatments, the Pop Chips Photo Booth, Paul Mitchell hair styling and a concert by…someone named Mike Posner.

Yes, I have no idea who this Mike Posner guy is, and even after sitting with thousands of screaming girls who were calling his name, and Wikipedia-ing him on my iPhone, during the concert. I still don’t. At least I don’t know him like those girls do. They LOVE him. OMG, do they love him. Being “media,” my friend Shelley (@fauxlahipster) and I were given tickets to the very front row, much to the chagrin of squatters who were hoping we wouldn’t show up and were very depressed when the usher kicked them out. Sorry, girls!

During the course of the concert, Shelley and I realized we should have just let those girls have our seats. We clearly didn’t appreciate Posner as much as the 20-somethings(?) did. “I feel like we’re moms taking their kids to a concert,” Shelley said. Indeed. But I tried to remember what it felt like to be a screaming teenybopper. People still use that term, right? During the Duran Duran and Depeche Mode concerts I attended, I was probably screaming my head off, too, and singing along to every song. And I would have DIED if John Taylor or Alan Wilder had come up to me during the concert like Posner did to a girl sitting behind us.

And the girls go wild.

Yup, he skipped our row of seated fuddy-duddies and walked over to her. Not that I’m complaining. The girl, Kelsey, was stunned and smiling shyly while her friends were screaming, “Ohmygodohmygodohmygod!”

As Posner sang while looking deeply into her eyes, I snapped some photos. After he returned to the stage and Kelsey was still in shock I shared with her the photo I took.

I figured if I were in her position I would have wanted that brush with an idol documented. “Oh my god! None of us even thought to take pictures while that was happening!” one of her friends said. I just wished that I had thought to use the flash or something since the photo is kind of blurry.

Anyway, that made the concert for me.  Since I couldn’t really enjoy the music, it was nice to be able to relate to the concert-goers from the perspective of a former teenybopper.

After the Nokia event, I was unsatisfied, though. Maybe it’s because I’m not a 20-something girl anymore. The college students and Students Run LA participants were over the moon about the end-of-run celebration, I’m sure. They got their pop concert and freebie Paul Mitchell hair treatments, Coca Colas, and goody bags. But sporting a ringing in my ears and a throbbing headache from sitting in front of concert speakers for a couple of hours,  I was left wishing Nike had just given us medals and bananas at an actual finish line. Oh well, at least I can now say, “I was THIS close to Mike Posner.”

More photos of Nike event after the jump.

Springtime, Drink Time: 1886 Bar’s New Cocktails Debut

Honeymoon cocktail by acuna-hansen

Honeymoon cocktail: Applejack, Benedictine, Curacao and lemon. (Photo by acuna-hansen)

The Raymond’s 1886 Bar debuts its new spring cocktail menu today! The new list is a collaborative effort by head barman Marcos Tello and his bar crew at 1886, plus esteemed mixologists like Alex Day (formerly of Death & Co.) and Vincenzo Marianella (Copa d’Oro). With the use of ingredients like strawberries and kumquats and light taste profiles, the new menu emulates the freshness of spring. Bonus is the coffee cocktails featuring a coffee-infused Gran Classico and another with Chicory-coffee-infused rye whiskey!

I haven’t had a chance to check out the new goods yet but will do so asap. In any case, you can find the complete list of all 16 cocktails on my LAist post. But here are the ones whose descriptions make me oh-so thirsty.

  • Crushed Strawberry Fizz: housemade strawberry syrup, gin, lemon and egg whites.
  • Fish House Punch: A single-serving version of a punch — rum, cognac, peach and nutmeg — said to have rendered George Washington speechless back in the day at Philadelphia’s Fish House Club.
  • Reunion Island Cocktail: A coffee homage by barista/1886 bartender Laura Lindsay — Bols Genever, coffee-infused Gran Classico and Carpano Antica. I think this could be my new favorite.
  • Saladito: Inspired by a childhood memory of spiced Mexican candy — mezcal, lime, honey, salt and chile with a “surprise” on the side.
  • Southern Belle: This one is from Vincenzo. Muddled kumquats and mint with housemade vanilla syrup, Licor 43 and bourbon.

Hangover Cure: 3 Beer Cocktail Recipes From LA Bartenders

Aidan Demarest by Caroline on Crack

Aidan Demarest topping off his own Enlightenment beer cocktail.

Every pro drinker has a hangover remedy in their back pocket, be it Advil and lots of Gatorade, a pile of greasy bacon or, for the masochist, a morning jog. I’m a fan of the hair-of-the-dog remedy. Granted, I only employ this method when I have nothing to do for the rest of my day but it is more fun than all of the above.

Now, one has to be careful with their hangover-curing cocktail of choice. You don’t want one too strong that will just knock you into your next hangover, or one too light with all the personality of a glass of water. Fortunately author Kinglsey Amis documented Evelyn Waugh’s aptly named Noonday Reviver in his book, Everyday Drinking. It combines the curative effects of gin (thanks to the herbs) and ginger beer and the burp-inducing effervescence and hardiness of the stout beer in one restorative cocktail.

The cocktail is currently served at the Spare Room in Hollywood but thanks to mixologist Aidan Demarest, who shared his version of the recipe with me, you can make it in the low-light quietness of your own home.

For other beer cocktails available around the city, check out my list in LA Weekly‘s Squid Ink. By the way, last night I had dinner at Library Alehouse in Santa Monica, and they, too, have a beer cocktail menu featuring classic ones like Snakebite, Black and Tan and Shandie.
