The Eveleigh: Liquid Brunch & Hangover Cures

Seeded granola by Caroline on Crack

Seeded granola for the "I can barely stomach anything" hangover.

As someone who’s not into scenes, look-at-me-ness or celebutards, I avoid the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood like I do babies and questionable rashes on people. But when a publicist used my two favorite words (“brunch” and “cocktails”) in her pitch to entice me to check out The Eveleigh (“eh-ver-lee”) — a newish restaurant by three Aussie hotties Nick Hatsatouris, Nick Mathers and Lincoln Pilcher — well, I said “hells yeah!”

The cocktail menu, a nice mix of classics and instant classics, was created by bar manager Dave Kupchinsky, formerly of Tar Pit. But I didn’t know this til I arrived at the Abercrombie & Fitch-esque restaurant, in the former Kenneth Cole space, late Sunday morning. I just love brunch and cocktails!

The Eveleigh's Patio by Caroline on Crack

Nice place to nurse a hangover.

And yes, the decor of reclaimed wood, rustic tchotchkes and lime and lemon trees instantly transports you from standing on L.A.’s famous thoroughfare to the Hamptons or Sonoma wine country or somewhere casual and far from billboards and nonstop gridlock.

Walking past a water fountain which a trio of friends let their dogs drink from and into the front part of the restaurant where I was greeted by a hostess with a genuine smile, I felt stirrings in my heart. Could this be the one place on the Sunset Strip that’s for the likes of me?

The hostess lead me and my brunch companion, blogger ShopEatSleep, past a fireplace, a beautiful bar with a steel (?) top counter and old-fashioned-looking bar stools to our seats on the patio out back. There were two long communal tables and several booths. In the back was a bar that is currently not in use but, we’re told, will some day be. The roof was open but plastic walls helped keep it from getting too breezy. Can’t wait to see what this place will be like during the summer.

From Los Angeles Times:

This Aussie-accented newcomer brings a rustic chic setting, appealing French-Italian comfort food and a savvy cocktail and wine list to the party on Sunset.

Perusing the brunch menu, I was immediately struck by the varied selection of dishes that would appeal to any hungover appetite: from “I can barely eat anything” seeded granola with frozen yogurt and blood orange to “I need fat” Big Breakfast with eggs, pork and sage sausage, smoked bacon, potato hash, and avocado toast. This is a big win for anyone wandering the Strip in a boozy, post-Saturday night haze. And if you’re not hungover, I highly recommend the soft scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, chervil hollandaise on an English muffin for $13.

Bubble & Squeak by Caroline on Crack

Bubble & Squeak.

That’s another thing I appreciated about the Eveleigh, its prices. Sure, this media brunch was comped but I wouldn’t have minded paying my own way. Of course I don’t know if I can reconcile paying $9 for banana bread with lemon and clove mascarpone and honey but at least we’re not talking $18 for chicken and waffles ::cough::Tasting Kitchen::cough! And the cocktails here are $12 each, not too bad for WeHo.

Speaking of which I like how the cocktails also vary in a hangover-friendly manner, from a soothing gin with housemade tonic to the “I want to be drunk again” Morning Glory Fizz with Scotch, lemon sugar, absinthe and egg white. And for those who’d rather go the route of a healthy hangover cure, there’s a smoothies menu. And one particular shot, the Wake Me Up shot was described as something that will instantly detox you, making you sweat out the toxins. Made of ginger, lemon and cayenne it’s said to help your digestive system and circulation. Maybe try that after the cocktails.

My favorite smoothie, though, was the Cacao-Nut Date made with young coconut meat, coconut water, sweet cacao nibs, cinnamon, vanilla stevia and vanilla hemp milk. I can’t see this being a hangover cure because it’s sweet like a pastry and a bit gritty thanks to the nibs, but it’s a delicious drink to have after brunch.

In any case, The Eveleigh is definitely a brunch spot worth trekking out to WeHo for on the weekend, if you’re looking for a quiet spot on the Strip to nurse your hangover, far from the maddening mechanical bull and AMFs of Saddle Ranch up the street.

Hit the jump for the brunch cocktail gallery.

Gold Standard 2011: Eating Spree at the Petersen Museum

Jitlada's Jazz by Caroline on Crack

Jitlada's Jazz making it "Thai people hot."

Those first 30 minutes at LA Weekly‘s Gold Standard 2011 yesterday was an eating spree. Yes, I only had half an hour — afforded to me by a media pass — to take pictures and eat and drink as much as I could of the 40 or so food vendors at Jonathan Gold’s annual food event before the flood gates were opened at 1pm to the general public who had lined up in a long, serpentine queue in the Petersen Automotive Museum. I had suffered through the first Gold Standard event in 2009 and didn’t want to be shut out again by the clusterf*ck of foodies or prematurely sold-out food booths — issues that, frankly, prompted me to steer clear of last year’s event.

Drago Centro's foie gras parfait by Caroline on Crack

Drago Centro's foie gras parfait.

So I ran around snapping photos of Loteria Grill‘s tacos de lengua, Nickel Diner‘s bacon maple doughnuts (which apparently went well with the bourbon next door),…hey, Bulleit bourbon…no, focus! Guelaguetza‘s tamal de mole Amarillo…ran past A-Frame‘s Fine Print cocktails and kettle corn with my hands as blinders to outside where I allowed myself to snatch up Park’s BBQ and then to Manila Machine for the lumpia Shanghai with pork belly and pineapple adobo.

There, I tried chatting up my peeps while Chef Greenspan of the Foundry on Melrose yelled loudly from his booth across the way. He laughed and projected to the crowd as if he were on the Iron Chef. In any case, the Manila Machine folks were thirsty in the warm sun so I went to fetch them A-Frame cocktails. After dropping those off it was once more unto the breach. Drago Centro’s chef de cuisine Ian Gresik handed me a foie gras parfait with beef croutons saying he had four of those for breakfast this morning. I was so famished I shrugged off that pang of guilt and scooped a dollop into my mouth. Hm, creamy and rich, but I was still hungry.

Then there were the Vietnamese crepes from Susan Feniger’s Street. Meh. Fortunately Mozza‘s nommy Mozza Caprese with fresh burrata perked me back up. Would have been nice to follow that up with whatever Krissy Lefebvre was serving up at the Ludo Bites booth (Chef Ludo just had back surgery so couldn’t be there), but I didn’t want to bother trying to penetrate the wall of people. Instead I grabbed a pot pie from Good Girl Dinette across the way and a not-so-impressive cocktail shot made with Moon Mountain vodka.

Bricia checking out the event by Caroline on Crack

Guelaguetza's Bricia checking out the event.

Later I ran into ol’ friend John of Social Domain who introduced me to Jitlada‘s owner Jazz — so adorable and humble even if she was telling us about the celebrities who have been popping up at her Thai restaurant. Apparently Natalie Portman stopped by pre-pregnancy. While John grabbed some extra hot sauce to make his Crying Tiger dish “Thai people hot,” I dug into the vegetable curry. OMFG it was STILL too spicy. Fortunately the Singha Beer booth was just next door so a tall cool lager soothed the burn a bit. When that wasn’t quite enough, a follow-up glass of Domaine Carneros sparkling helped.

The whole middle alley of the event was dedicated to wines provided by the Wine House. I shied away from all that since wine usually puts me to sleep, and was kind of disappointed that there weren’t as many cocktails as there seemed to be in the first Gold Standard. But I guess they were saving those for JGold’s annual cocktail party with Zocalo at Union Station. Ah well. At least there was Bulleit Bourbon, Babita’s sangria and A-Frame’s delicious Fine Print with rum, hibiscus, falernum, like and orange bitters. By the way, props to A-Frame for having a seemingly bottomless batch of cocktail.

By 2pm Jar was already sold out and packed up so festival goers discarded their plates on its empty table. Soon the Foundry followed (missed out on the grilled cheese sandwich!) as well as Mo-Chica and Ludo Bites. But I wasn’t too peeved by that since I had had my fill for the day, enjoying food fest favorites like Starry Kitchen’s chicken curry, Mozza’s caprese, Akasha’s jam selection, Guelaguetza’s tamales and Park’s BBQ.

Mattatouille and FoodJeTaime by Caroline on Crack

Bloggers Mattatouille and Food Je T'Aime enjoying wine alley.

And it was fun running into Tweeps like @Mattatouille, @StreetGourmetLA, @MidtownlunchLA, @JulieWolfson, @SauceLA, @NomsNotBombs and @MyLastBite. I also got to congratulate Krissy of Ludo Bites on her and Ludo’s new show on Sundance and chatted with Akasha Richmond about her upcoming tequila dinner as well as her daughter Amrit’s social media successes. And Celestino Drago and Ian Gresik kept me company while I waited to see if I won anything from the Heal the Bay raffle (nope!). Yeah, extra schmoozy.

But the icing on the cake at the end of the day was finally introducing myself to the big man himself, Jonathan Gold, who I had previously been too shy to go up to. At the end of the day, he seemed happy with the event and talked about how strange it was to have a camera crew following him around for the documentary they’re doing on him. We spoke briefly about cocktails and then he was gone, posing in someone else’s picture.

I surprised myself by staying until the end of the event, having made up my mind beforehand that I was just going to stay for an hour or so to take pictures. But the good friends and good food made it difficult to tear myself away. What a truly fun day. Really glad I stuck around.

Who Makes the Best Mai Tai in All of LA?

Mai Tai Mixoff contestants by Caroline on Crack

Who's the tastiest of them all?

Aidan Demarest’s mark on the L.A. cocktail scene is as the ringmaster. He’s run some of the hottest bars in Los Angeles like Schmeven Schmand and The Edison, helped build the cocktail programs of Pasadena’s 1886 and Hollywood’s Spare Room, thrown together must-do cocktail events like guest mixologist bar nights — Radio Room and Red Rover, and of course orchestrated the infamous Blogger Barhop. Suffice it to say, I think he’s awesome.

Aidan Demarest and Zane Lamprey by Caroline on Crack

Winner Aidan Demarest with host Zane Lamprey

But I have to admit, he wasn’t my choice for the winner of Los Angeles Magazine‘s Mai Tai Mixoff last week. And, yes, I told him that after the competition, which was held at Hollywood’s supperclub. He had competed against Adrian Biggs of La Descarga and Matthew Biancaniello of the Library Bar to create the best Mai Tai in all of L.A. and won.

Now, before you Mai Tai purists get your pink, palm tree logoed panties in a wad over “hey, what about Tiki Ti?” this contest was a challenge to nine of the top mixologists in L.A. to create their take on the classic tropical cocktail. So it was with this in mind that I judged the final three contestants’ drinks.

Matt created Lost in Laos, an uber exotic, creamy concoction with Crusoe Silver Rum, coconut milk, Green Chartreuse and sprinkled with little purple flowers. He had described it as “a Mai Tai and a Pina Colada making love on the islands of Thailand.” Suffice it to say, I loved his version the most. “You just have a hard-on for Matt’s cocktails,” Aidan said after I told him. “Yeah, I do,” I replied. Matt’s Mai Tai is available for your tasting pleasure at Hollywood Roosevelt’s Library Bar.

Warning: Bikini'd girls overhead.

Contestant #2 Aussie Adrian, who is so sexy that host Zane Lamprey (HDNet’s Drinking Made Easy) said that he wanted to put his shrimp on Adrian’s barbie, used ingredients that he thought would influence an L.A.-inspired Mai Tai, namely Mexican food.

So his recipe calls for hibiscus liqueur and a cilantro-rubbed rim as well as Crusoe Silver Rum, Jamaican Rum, honey syrup, lime and grapefruit juices.

La Descarga doesn’t currently serve Adrian’s Mai Tai because it would be kinda tough to do at the busy bar but LD’s general manager Steve Livigni said that maybe when the weather gets warmer they could give it a try. Adrian said that if they pre-batched the cocktail it could work. So check back with LD in the spring.

So, yeah, I told Aidan why his cocktail, The Evening Glass-Off (a surf term), wasn’t my first choice. “It tasted like a really good traditional Mai Tai and I thought the point was to create a whole new version of the cocktail,” I admitted. Aidan’s recipe calls for Crusoe Silver Rum, Crusoe Spiced Rum, Orgeat, simple syrup and chipotle-spiced pineapple. It was potent, sweet and delicious. Aidan basically formulated a Mai Tai cocktail that he would like to drink. It’s also a cocktail that I’d like to drink…and drink. Fortunately, it’s available at Hollywood Roosevelt’s The Spare Room for a revisit.

Now when fellow judge Steve Livigni pulled together the list of nine mixologists to compete in this mixoff, he had approached Aidan asking him to choose one of his bartenders to represent The Spare Room. However when Aidan’s wife heard that the grand prize was a trip to Hawaii, she convinced him to enter the contest himself. The couple first got engaged in Hawaii 20 years ago and haven’t been back since. Suffice it to say, they’re long overdue for a return trip. Just ask Aidan’s wife. Congrats, Aidan, and aloha!

Look for a recap of the Mai Tai Mixoff in Los Angeles Magazine‘s May issue.
