McNuggetini Vloggers Alie & Georgia’s New Cocktail Web Series on Food2.com

Alie & Georgia by Caroline on Crack

Cocktial Vloggers Alie & Georgia

You’ve probably heard of Alie & Georgia before. They’re the Los Angeles cocktail vloggers, Alie Ward (LA Times staff writer) and Georgia Hardstark (journalist/blogger), who in 2009 created the McNuggetini and a how-to video to go with it. Now, personally I thought this cocktail, which involves a chocolate milkshake and barbecue sauce, sounded erptastic but their video won me over. How cute are they? What with the banter and purty sundresses.  It’s like hanging out with your too-cute friends as they experiment in the kitchen. So when I heard that they were going to be doing a demo at the Los Angeles Times Celebration of Food and Wine this past Sunday, I had to check them out.

Peanut Butter & Jealous Fixings by Caroline on Crack

Peanut Butter & Jealous Fixings

Under the oppressive sun on the Paramount Studios lot, I watched them mix three of their unusual creations: Umami Up, Peanut Butter & Jealous and the Chocolate Cherry Bomb. The Umami cocktail was described as something best enjoyed as an aperitif and definitely something you wouldn’t drink on a first date due to its pungent odor. Alie even had a box of Altoids on hand to offer a curiously strong chaser to those daring enough to sample the garlic-infused concoction.

The Peanut Butter & Jealous was a mix of vodka and cranberry juice muddled with raspberries and served in a peanut butter-rimmed glass. Sounded fun and it looked like the perfect drink for stylish moms on a play date; they can sip on this and make their rug rats jealous. (Here’s the video of the recipe via Food2.com.)

The only cocktail I had the chance to grab at in the mad rush to the stage at the end of the demo was the Chocolate Cherry Bomb, a fiery but sweet drink composed of chocolate, spicy vodka, Sriracha sauce and a garnish of chili pepper and pepper-infused cherry. OK, now to be honest, this smelled like garbage left out in the hot sun for three days but once I got past the smell it tasted all right. Spicy, sweet. The only thing was that I couldn’t get past the smell on the third sip.

But I have to give those girls an A for effort, creativity and style. Heaven knows, it’s a nice change of pace from the vests-and-bowtie mixology in cocktail-serious bars around town. Not that I’m hating on those, because you know I love them. But as the girls said at their demo to stay-at-home bartenders, “Never get intimidated by mixology. It’s fun and risky. Don’t go too high brow, have fun.” It’s nice to be reminded about that. Hmm, now how would one go about making a mac and cheese cocktail?

And even their suggestions for where to get your booze and mixers are down-to-earth: Rite Aid apparently “has the craziest deals” and Galco’s Soda Shop is awesome for its wide selection of vintage sodas.

If you want to learn more Alie & Georgia recipes, fortunately for you they are kicking off a new cocktail Web series called “Drinks With Alie & Georgia” on Food2.com, a Scripps-owned food site, on this coming Monday, September 13. Click here for a list of their episodes.

That same night the girls will be guest bartending at Cha Cha Lounge (where they first met, aww) in Silver Lake from 7 to 9pm. This will be a weekly gig to coincide with the release of each of their videos. So see it on the Web first and then head over to Cha Cha to taste it IRL.

If you’d like to try one of their cocktails out now, I was able to get a copy of their Zombie Gut Punch. Yes, the name alone sounds disgusting but I love zombies so here it is after the jump. Fortunately this doesn’t involve any guts garnish.

Rockin’ Lobster: Port of Los Angeles Lobster Fest and Music Weekend

Lotsa lobster.

***CONTEST CLOSED***

I don’t think there’s a lobster fest that’s cooler than our Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival in San Pedro. I mean, in addition to fresh steamed Maine lobsters, this event boasts 18 live bands. Yes, it’s also a music festival. Weird and neat! What a great way to end the summer. From Friday, September 17 through September 19, lobster fest attendees will get to enjoy bands like Dengue Fever, The Section Quartet and See How We Are with John Doe and Exene Cervenka of X.

So you can rock out with your $18 Maine lobster meal. There’s something for everyone here. And even if lobsters aren’t your thing, meaning you’re a vegetarian who’s dragged to the event, you can just dine at the salad bar at Ports o’ Calls restaurant near the fest, take your receipt to the front desk and then you get a free admission ticket. Also, food truck lovers will be pleased to know that “The Great Food Truck Race” contestants, Ragin’ Cajun and Nom Nom Truck, will be on hand to offer a nice supplement to crustacean.

General admission is $9 and doesn’t include the $18 lobster meal. But the VIP ticket ($39), aka First Class admission, includes a weekend admission, a Maine lobster meal, front-of-the-line privileges for the lobster meal line and the bar, a beverage of your choice and your own dining area. It’s only a $12 difference for all that extra good stuff.

If even that’s too much for you, lucky for you that I’m giving away a couple of pairs right now.

OK, so who wants a free pair of First Class tickets (regular $78) to Port of Los Angeles’ Lobster Festival next weekend?

All you have to do is the following:

  1. Leave a comment below (one entry per person) with your email address and your Twitter handle as well as your favorite lobster dish. Lobster risotto? Lobster Thermidor? Lobster Bisque?
  2. Tweet this: “I want lobster, @carolineoncrack! Gimme tix to @polalobsterfest! http://bit.ly/dtWHr1”
  3. And lastly become a fan of (aka “Like”) my Facebook page.

**You have to do all of the above for your contest submission to be valid.**

Contest ends this Friday the 10th at 10am PST. I’ll then plug the entries into the Randomizer, pick two winners and notify them later that day. If I don’t hear back from the winners by 52pm I’ll pick more names, so make sure to keep an eye on your inboxes! The winners will then be announced at 4pm.

EVENT: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 to SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19

Help Me Pick Who’s the Best LA Bartender for Table 20

Who makes the best cocktails in LA? by Caroline on Crack

Who makes the best cocktails in LA?

So I don’t know if you knew this but I’m one of the judges on Table 20′s contest to find the best bartender in Los Angeles. For several weeks, Table 20 had asked Angelenos to submit their nominations for their favorite booze pushers. And now the list has been narrowed down to just six bartenders. This is where I come in. I have to visit each bartender by September 23, try their specialty cocktail, take notes and decide which one I think is the best. Argh! What a hard gig! Who to pick? Who to pick?  I mean, come on, I have favorites, that’s just how it is. But will there be a dark horse contender that will change my mind?

On October 4, there will be an exclusive wrap party at Elevate Lounge/Takami Sushi downtown where not only will the winner of the contest be announced but the six finalists will each make a rum punch for the crowd to sample. It’s an exclusive party but I’ll be giving away 5 pairs of tickets so you’ll get a chance to taste the concoctions as well as meet these talented individuals who will be in attendance. Stay tune for that giveaway!

Hit the jump for the videos Table 20 took of each finalist, as if this would make my job easier. Out of the six, who would you pick?

BTW, you gotta love seeing how these guys and gal look outside of their uniforms.
