A Table at The Edison by Caroline on Crack

A Table at The Edison.

*****CONTEST CLOSED*****

Next week’s Radio Room at the Edison Downtown will bring a little bit of Gotham to Los Angeles as Manhattan bar Ward III — an upscale drinking hole known for quality, experimental cocktails — will be featured. The owner and bartenders of Ward III — Michael Neff, Kenneth McCoy and Abdul Tabini — will strut their stuff on the shakers during the popular monthly bar night on Tuesday, July 13.

Here’s their list of cocktails ($14 each) for the evening:

  • Baby Eveline (by Michael Neff): Muddled strawberries, lemon juice, Peychaud bitters, Martini & Rossi Prosecco and vodka of your choice
  • Four Stars (by Michael Neff): Herradura silver tequila, lime juice, muddled rosemary and cilantro, and a dab of Sriracha hot sauce
  • Hell Bent for Leather (by Kenneth McCoy): The Edison’s private bottling of Woodford Reserve bourbon, Irish whiskey, orange & lemon peel and muddled cardamom seed
  • The Collective (by Kenneth McCoy): Dewar’s 12, Martini & Rossi Sweet Vermouth, clover honey, lemon juice, orange bitters and egg whites
  • Angel Zakir (by Abdul Tabini): Martin Miller’s gin, muddled cucumber, basil and lime juice and Aperol
  • Tortuga (by Abdul Tabini): Bacardi 8 rum, muddled lime, orange & lemon with a dusting of shaved cinnamon

OK, now for the part you’ve been waiting for. I’m giving away a VIP night at this Radio Room. This prize package (valued at $250) includes:

  • Free entrance for 4 guests (cover is normally $10)
  • A reserved table for the evening
  • 8 complimentary cocktails tickets so you can sample the entire menu, plus some from Joseph Brooke, the Edison’s director of spirits
  • A selection of complimentary hors d’oeuvres

Pretty suh-weet, right? I love it all: free entrance, guaranteed seating, freebie cocktails and food! And all you have to do to enter the contest for a chance at this fab prize is the following, oh and be on Twitter AND Facebook. Sorry, non social media types:

  1. Leave a comment below with your email address (so I can contact you if you win) and your Twitter handle as well as what’s your favorite classic cocktail.
  2. Tweet this: “I need a drink @carolineoncrack! Gimme tix to @TheEdisonLA’s Radio Room! http://bit.ly/aU4kAq”
  3. And lastly become a fan of (aka “Like”) my Facebook page.

**You have to do all of the above for your contest submission to be valid.**

Contest ends Sunday at 7pm PST. And at 1pm PST on Monday the 12th, I’ll plug your entries into the randomizer, pick out a winner and notify you.

Good luck, all! Oh, and if you win, remember to tip your bartenders and servers! Just because it’s free doesn’t mean you still shouldn’t show your appreciation for their service!

Drago Centro’s People’s Cocktail Winner: Jeni Afuso of Oishii Eats

Jeni Afuso by Caroline on Crack

Winner of Drago Centro's People's Cocktail Contest Jeni Afuso

Thanks to the Drago Centro People’s Cocktail Contest last week, food blogger/photographer extraordinaire Jeni Afuso of Oishii Eats has just added “award-winning mixologist” to her list of accomplishments!

Some may have considered Jeni the dark horse contender in this contest. After all, she was going up against dedicated drink bloggers and cocktail enthusiasts Matt Robold of RumDood, Ron Diggity of Lush Angeles and Chuck Taggart of The Sporting Life Cocktail Community blog and The Gumbo Pages. But it was Jeni’s summery, peachy rendition, the Momo Rye Fizz — her use of Rittenhouse 100 no doubt helped — that won over the judges (me, Shauna of The Minty, Lesley of Tasting Table and Celestino Drago). We felt it was a natural fit for the downtown restaurant’s new summer cocktail menu that debuted the night of the contest.

When asked what inspired her to come up with her winning cocktail, Jeni said, “Summers are meant for muddling fruits and my favorite fruit to muddle are market fresh peaches. Peaches are a perfect match with rye whiskey bringing a great balance of spiciness, sweetness and citrus.  Muddled peaches, rye whiskey, and summers months are meant to be.” Of course, I agree.

Surprisingly, Jeni, whose drink of choice is Corpse Reviver No. 2, is brand-new to mixology. She and her husband started their home bar just last spring thanks to a list of “must have” spirits recommended by a bartender at Bottega Louie. “And from there we kind of went crazy with the inventory.  We started off mixing a lot of vintage drinks at first, with the Ramos Gin Fizz being my first cocktail.  At that first shake, I was hooked,” she said. Lucky for us! For her next cocktail, Jeni says that although her husband is rooting for a Hello Kitty cocktail, she’s just been playing around with Ransom Old Tom Gin.

And no, Jeni doesn’t see bartending in her future. “I know I can’t be a bartender.  My memory is horrible.  For now, it’s fun having friends and family over at our place. My husband and I will make several cocktails a night.  It’s fun and relaxing for us.  We even have a tip jar.  One night our moms left us a $40 tip.  That’s fun enough for me.”

To see other pictures from the contest, head for the jump. There are also videos of Ron of Lush Angeles making his cocktail and Matt of RumDood talking about how he came up with his Dutch Elm Disease cocktail — a tasty, smokey mix of Bols Genever and Scotch.

Table20.com’s Best Bartender Contest: Who’s Your Favorite LA Bartender?

Bartender and an absinthe flame by Caroline on Crack

Bartender on fyah!

You hear me prattle on and on about my favorite bartenders in Los Angeles, but who are yours? Wait, don’t tell me here, rather nominate them on Table20.com and you will have a chance to win this one fabulous prize — dinner for four at Lazy Ox Canteen, dinner for two at Takami Sushi & Robata Restaurant and tickets for two to the post-contest party. Just nominate your fave mixologist to improve your odds.

Of course, with prizes like that you will have to do more than just click a box. You’ll have to register with Table20.com and then submit the following about your bartender:

  • their picture — mobile phone pictures work
  • their first name
  • their place of work (name and location)
  • why they deserve to be named LA’s Best Bartender

Easy peasy. And you can actually nominate more than one bartender. You have until August 4th to get your nomination in but do it now while you remember. If anything this would be a great way to give your go-to bartender their much deserved props, especially if they are an undiscovered talent, a consummate professional, a wiz in customer service or just your dependable “therapist.”

From Table20.com:

The best bartender can be defined by many aspects; best service, best drinks, broadest drink knowledge, the fastest, best under pressure, best personality, best stories, best listener, most consistent, whatever attribute makes you happy.

After the 30 days of collecting nominees and then voting, the list will be narrowed down to the top 25 nominees with the most votes. The bartender with the most votes at this point in the game will be the automatic People’s Choice winner and one of the six finalists.  The five judges (I’m one!) will then select a fave bartender from the remaining 24 nominees.

The next phase of the contest involves the judges visiting each of the finalists and then we deliberate over who is the overall winner of the contest, who will then be announced after August 16.

Your hardworking drink slinger will win not only bragging rights but a VIP bourbon tasting at the Edison, dinner at Osteria La Buca and a $100 gift certificate to every mixologist’s favorite store, Bar Keeper Silver Lake! Yeah, definitely wayy better than your usual 20% tip, right?

Christy Pope by Caroline on Crack

New Yorker Christy Pope is one of lovely ladies showcased at Red Hot Rover.

Roving bar night Red Rover which had debuted this past March at First & Hope Supper Club will now be popping up on the Westsiide! Hotel Shangri-La in Santa Monica on Monday, July 12 to be exact. Yes, Marcos Tello and Aidan Demarest, aka cocktail consultation firm, Tello/Demarest Liquid Assets, will not only be bringing their mixology to west of the 405 for a change but this night’s lineup will consist of all women bartenders from around the country! No wonder this night has been renamed Red Hot Rover.

Guest tenders include local Naomi Schimek, Christy Pope of New York, Jennifer Contraveos of Chicago and Jessica Tanaka of San Francisco.

The ladies have come up with an 11-cocktail list (each drink is $13) for you to enjoy against the beautiful backdrop of the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean. Lovely.

  • Amer Sucree: Oxley Gin, M&R Sweet Vermouth, elderflower liqueur
  • Angkor Wat: Bacardi Coco, lime, serrano chile and cilantro
  • Bay Rose: Oxley Gin, blackberries, pink peppercorn honey syrup, splash of lemon and egg whites
  • Bonita Applebaum: Bacardi, Landy Cognac, Chartruese and apple butter with cinnamon
  • Gin Et Vertjus: Oxley Gin with Persian sour grapes and honey syrup
  • La Summer: Serrano chile pepper syrup with mescal and Cazadores tequila with mango and pineapple
  • Lost Horizon Cock-Tail: Sassafras-infused Bacardi 8 Rum with Demarara syrup topped with nutmeg and orange
  • Love & Secrets: Passionfruit with Cazadores Reposado Tequila, citrus and sweet topped with Marini & Rossi Asti Spumante
  • Mother’s Milk: Bacardi 8 with Falernum, Rhum Agricole mixed with coconut milk, lime and topped with flowers and candy
  • South Central: Muddled cucumber and mint with splash of lime, sugar and Corzo Silver Tequila
  • The Westside: Mint, blueberry syrup, Oxley Gin, egg whites

The La Summer is calling my name. BTW, if you are ambitious enough to try and drink through the whole list, the hotel is offering a special Red Rover rate of $240. Yeah, that’s the discount, but I guess the hotel DOES have a view of the ocean and a cool pool area.

Roger Room’s New Summer Menu Debuts Tomorrow

Stranger Than Paradise cocktail by Caroline on Crack

Roger Room's new Stranger Than Paradise cocktail

Last night I celebrated my birthday with a few of my buddies at Roger Room in West Hollywood with my fave mixologist, Damian Windsor. While there he gave us sneaky sips of the new cocktails that will debut tomorrow on the updated “Also” cocktail menu, a supplement to the regular 21-drink menu. Roger Room prints a new “Also” menu with five drinks about every three months for the new season to showcase “the new things they’re into” as well as seasonal fruit.

Here are the new drinks for your consideration. Damian created all of them except the Star Strega Swizzle which came from Jason Bran:

  • Algonquin ($13): Pikesville Rye, pineapple juice, pineapple syrup, Dry Vermouth, served up
  • Let’s Get Lost ($14): Tres Reyes Blanco Tequila, lime juice, agave nectar, cucumber, mint, on the rocks
  • Pisco Punch ($14): Gran Sierpe Pisco, Mata Hari Absinthe, lime juice, pineapple syrup, pineapple juice, crushed grapes, served over crushed ice
  • Star Strega Swizzle ($14): Starr Rum, Liquore Strega, Velvet Falernum, passion fruit, lemon juice, cracked clove, served over crushed ice
  • Stranger Than Paradise ($14): Plymouth Gin, lemon juice, egg white, absinthe mist, crushed strawberry, served up

I’ve only had the Algonquin and a few sips of the Stranger Than Paradise. The Algonquin, a classic cocktail created at the Algonquin Hotel in New York back during the Vicious Circle days, is surprisingly not sweet despite the use of both pineapple juice and pineapple syrup. (The syrup is the only difference from the original recipe.) The rye and the Dry Vermouth smooth out the sweetness nicely making this a very delightful, drinkable concoction for a warm evening.

The Stranger Than Paradise was a popular drink among my friends who ordered it, loving it for its combination of the summery strawberries with that hint of absinthe and mmm, Plymouth Gin. So very light and yet potent.

And since we were on a gin kick, we went back to the regular menu. Now usually I stick to my fave cocktail, Thug, which is a spicy whiskey drink, and really haven’t explored the other cocktails made with other spirits even though there is a nice spread. So I was delighted to find a new fave on the menu: Cad, which is made with gin, coffee liqueur and lemon juice. Frickin’ awesome. Like no other coffee cocktail I’ve had before where the coffee flavor is usually overpowering and the sweetness is darn near syrupy. The gin and lemon juice softened the sweet coffee flavor here. Problem is that it’s too drinkable, as I put it away right quick. Before I knew it, aww, all gone. I believe this was the big hit of the evening as we each ordered one.

In any case, if you go to Roger Room to check out the menu for yourself and see Damian behind the bar, blow him a kiss for me, will ya?
