LA Weekly Made My Decade: CoC Scores 2 Web Awards

LA Weekly Web Awards header

Last year when I had asked my crackheads to vote for my blog post, “100 Things To Try in L.A. Before You Die,” as blog post of the year in LA Weekly‘s Los Angeles Web Awards I had no idea that 1) it would actually win (although I hoped!) since L.A. is a huuuge city with a bazillion blogs covering it and 2) that my lil ol’ site would also get voted as the Best Drinking Blog in Los Angeles.

That may just be one of the coolest thing that has ever happened to me. Right up there with winning that Vespa. Hee!

The awards party is this Thursday but thank gawd we won’t be expected to make any speeches. So I’ll just give my thanks here.

Thanks so much to the readers who voted for it and a big grazie to the “team of expert judges from LA and SF’s online communities” who selected the winners. And huge thanks to my sister who gave me the idea to even submit my “100 Things” blog post to the contest and to my brother and his husband Chris for working tirelessly to fix my blog after it went down.

Of course there are some L.A. drinking blogs out there that I’d like to give a shout-out to because they’re awesome and full-on dedicated to the fine art of boozing. My compadres in cocktailing: The Liquid Muse, Thirsty in LA and RumDood.

BTW, remember how my blog was offline for a couple of weeks? Well it’s all part of the process. I’m planning a redesign soon! Keep an eye out.

Cocktail Review: Providence’s Opium Den

Opium Den

Opium Den Cocktail

While killing time before dinner at Marino on Melrose, I stopped in at Providence for a quick drinkie. I had kept meaning to go there to visit renowned mixologist Zahra Bates but unfortunately on this night she was out. In any case at least I had an impressive cocktail menu to keep me company. What caught my fancy was the concoction called Opium Den ($14), a cocktail with tamarind-infused Buffalo Trace bourbon, apple juice and sesame-kombucha dry Vermouth.

The bartender of the evening, Tricia, had described this as the perfect winter drink in that it’s warm even though chilled and she was absolutely right.

Now, I usually don’t like kombucha, hated that vinegary-gross kombucha tea that my mom used to make all the time, but here it appears as just an earthy hint at the back of the tongue. Ever so subtle that you probably really wouldn’t be able to put your finger on the flavor if you didn’t read the ingredients first. And I loved the balance of bourbon and apple juice which perfectly complemented one another, never overpowering.

I highly recommend this if you’re in the mood for something to warm you up on a wintry night.

Say It Ain’t So: Joe’s Restaurant Dessert Falls Short

Chocolate dessert for two?

Bad iPhone pictures courtesy of me.

Here’s my idea of dessert: it’s the part of the meal that you don’t want to skip so you mysteriously always have room for it in your tummy even after a hearty dinner. It’s the end of the supper that leaves your experience on a good note. “Wow, that was so gooood,” you’d say while rubbing your belly and sighing.

Well, disappointingly this wasn’t the case at Joe’s Restaurant in Venice. Now don’t get me wrong. I LOVE Joe’s brunch which comes with a wonderful fruit plate or granola and has a nice selection of brunch cocktails to boot. Mmm, bourbon milk punch! So I thought for sure this was a good pick to take my friend to for a birthday dessert, especially since she was a fan of their food, too.

But even though we originally had our eye on the chocolate crunch cake, we decided it would be fun to share the chocolate duo dessert ($15) which is basically dessert for two comprised of chocolate souffle cake, creme fraiche ice cream, caramel rice candy, passionfruit curd, brandied cherries, and two half glasses of Dow’s Crusted Port. The server warned us that the souffle would take 20 minutes to make but we didn’t mind. It would give us a chance to catch up.

Coconut Cake

No, the wait wasn’t a big deal but the portion of this “dessert for two” was. When the server finally arrived with our dish, my friend and I exchanged a confused glance. He had set a plate with a tiny souffle (smaller than a muffin), a small pile of three cherries and a melon ball-sized scoop of ice cream in front of me. “OK, here’s mine, now where’s yours?” I asked my friend, kidding but mostly serious. WTF?

Just that for $15?! It’s basically the size of one of their desserts which are small to begin with. The port must be pricey. In any case, they really expect couples out on a date looking for a romantic dessert to split these tiny portions? It’s enough to challenge the best marriages and even the best of friends. Fortunately, my friend wasn’t crazy about the brandied cherries since she doesn’t like the taste of alcohol but I gave her the evil eye when she basically hogged up all of that tiny scoop of ice cream. So selfish! Heh.

The souffle was soft, moist, rich and chocolatey and I definitely would have rather not shared it. Note to self: Once again, do not share desserts with people on their birthdays. You’ll just feel obligated to let them have most of it and will end up resenting them for that.

After we polished off the plate, amazingly we were still hungry. Something that should not happen after one dessert. So my friend suggested we order up the coconut cake ($8), too. At the time that seemed like a good idea but when I dug into the small slice of cake, I instantly regretted it. The frosting reminded me of the white frosting I’d experience at friends’ birthday parties growing up. So sugary and almost waxy. Nope, wasn’t crazy about this one either. Not even the lemon cream filling could save it for me. But fortunately my friend liked it and this time I let her have it all evil eye-free.

So yeah, Joe’s Restaurant may be great for brunch and dinner but it’s definitely not my dessert destination.

Bar Food, Take 2: Now With All Night Happy Hour, Whiskey & Trip to Dublin

Spicy Tuna (Photos courtesy of Bar Food)

Frankie and MJ

5 of 25: Sure, first impressions count but if you went into Bar Food in Brentwood last year when it first opened, you probably were confused by its Japanese restaurant remnants paired with the gastropub menu and the Irish owner. And even though it serves up wonderfully unique bar food and has 24 beers on tap, the venue’s Web site with its Comic Sans font would be enough to turn off any curious diner, regardless of what all those glowing Yelp reviews said. I didn’t care though. I felt like I stumbled into a hidden gem. Yay for me and HA-ha to all those folks squeezing into Q’s and Cabo Cantina.

But when I had stopped in recently after too many months away, I found a brand-new Bar Food with a brand-new snazzy Web site, complete with new Web address, to match. And not only were the sake jars lining the wall now replaced with a collection of decorative beer taps but owner Jason Killalee even added a selection of bourbon, scotch and whiskey to his beer/wine menu, and fancy escargot vol au vent to his food menu. No longer is this a diamond in the rough.

The newest element that’s sure to have people flocking here in droves, however, is the new ALL NIGHT happy hour, formerly 5-7pm. Yup, now you can get house beer for $3.50, house wine $5 and even have a nice dinner of tasty bar food for only $6 each any ol’ time you want. And yes, the free happy hour hot dog is still available, but only til 7pm.

Edamame With Black Bean Sauce

But my ultimate fave combo which I have every time I go here is the spicy tuna ($6) with the savory, finger-licking-good edamame with black bean sauce ($4) and the pear, blue cheese and arugula salad ($7.50, not on the hh menu). My bf and I split the edamame and salad but order our own spicy tuna dishes. They fill me up but don’t leave me feeling bloated or gross.

If you are looking for something heartier, though, Jason serves up a mean Guinness beef stew ($15.50) as well as Shepherd’s Pie ($14.50). Perfect for the chilly weather. And one day (maybe after that 13.1 half marathon, heh), I really want to try that mac & cheese with the scallions and bacon ($8.50). Yummy!

Although Bar Food is all prettied up now to showcase its good eats and drinks, Jason realizes that its name still makes it hard for folks to find on the Internet (just try Googling “Bar Food”). So right now he’s holding a contest where the person who can help make the gastropub’s name more search engine friendly will win round-trip tickets to Dublin as well as a four-night stay in a hotel in the Emerald City. Unfortunately only one submission per email so make it a good suggestion!

POST EDIT: Contest is now closed but Jason says he’s going to do another one.
