The Great Pumpkin Roundup: How LA Eateries Celebrate Fall

By Kaelin Burns

I can’t get enough of pumpkin, which is why fall is one of my favorite seasons. With Thanksgiving on the horizon, it’s right around November that restaurants really start to incorporate this fall favorite into dishes and I love seeing what they come up with. Pumpkin is such a versatile ingredient, just as good in savory dishes as sweet ones, and a variety of establishments and cuisines are finding new ways to use this amazing ingredient.

First, let’s check out the savory:

Pitfire Pizza makes gourmet pizzas at greatPumpkin Pizza at Pitfire prices. Check out this seasonal pizza special: organic pumpkin, toasted pepitas, wild greens, fontina cheese, and pumpkin seed oil served on their famously crispy thin crust. The pepitas provide a great contrasting crunchy texture to the soft chunks of pumpkin. This is another light dish using pumpkin, which means you won’t be too full for dessert!

  • Check the Web site for locations.

While this certainly isn’t a new dish, Mi Piace serves ravioli al burro e salvia (pumpkin ravioli in brown butter with sage and parmesan cheese). It’s a favorite and for good reason. The delicately buttered pasta, creamy pumpkin puree, and crispy sage are an amazing combination of flavors that shows the quality of their dishes.

  • 25 E. Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena (map). (626) 795-3131.

For a more unique use of pumpkin try the ultra spicy Jungle Curry at Chadaka Thai. This spicy curry is made without coconut milk, so it’s nice and light. It also features green beans, baby corn, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and basil with your choice of chicken, pork or beef. Pour over rice and enjoy!

  • 310 N. San Fernando Boulevard, Burbank (map). (818) 848-8520.

And now on to the sweet, because there’s nothing better than dessert anyway:

Pumpkin Pie Milkshake from The Counter

Take advantage of The Counter’s shake of the month and indulge in a super creamy pumpkin pie milkshake. Vanilla ice cream mixed with pumpkin pie filling, a mountain of whipped cream, and topped off with graham cracker crust crumbles! You’re definitely not gonna want to share this one.

  • Check the Web site for locations.

Susina Bakery gives you pumpkin two ways: tarts and cheesecake! These are delicious treats any day, and are also a great addition to your Thanksgiving dessert spread, because with all these pumpkin options, you’re gonna need an entire spread to enjoy them all.

  • 7122 Beverly Boulevard, Los Angeles (map). (323) 934-7900.

Sprinkles is well known for its cupcakes, so it’s no surprise that it does fall flavors right with a pumpkin spice cupcake and cinnamon cream cheese frosting. It has mastered creating a perfectly light and fluffy cupcake topped with the perfect amount of frosting. This one hits the spot.

  • 9635 Little Santa Monica Boulevard, Beverly Hills (map). (310) 274-8764.

I hope you enjoy these pumpkin dishes from across LA — they’re some of my favorites!

code.ai Launch at Fred Segal in Santa Monica

Bloggeresses

By fauxLAhipster

When Caroline invited me to the code.ai beauty event at Fred Segal my initial reaction was “meh” until I heard a few words that DID catch my attention “cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.”  The event was the launch of code.ai, a new product that claims to extend lashes and brows. You might ask, “Isn’t there already a product that does this?” But code.ai has a few major differences from Latisse.

  1. It does not require a prescription. You can pick it up from Fred Segal or from the code.ai Web site.
  2. It does not have several of the side effects associated with Latisse including eye skin darkening or eye irritation.

At first I was skeptical of its efficacy since it’s not an FDA-approved cosmeceutical (I used to work in the pharma industry), but when I saw When Tara Met Blog‘s bushy eyebrows (yes, they make a brow booster, too), I was sold! I also liked that the code.ai Web site provides full disclosure of the purpose behind each of their seemingly mysterioso active ingredients. Ever wonder what diethanolamine does? Go to their Web site and find out!

The event itself was at the Studio at Fred Segal. U’Luvka Vodka was shaking up lychee martinis that I actually enjoyed quite a lot! It didn’t have any of that harsh bite of cheaper vodkas and the lemon zest garnish was a perfect complement to the sweetness of the lychee. I was majorly digging this drink.

The only drawback was that both Caroline and I didn’t even feel a slight buzz after three of these babies. So we headed to the back of the Studio where La Parra Loca Sauvignon Blanc – Verdejo was being poured. I’m more of a red wine gal, but I actually thought this white was pretty good and Photo by fauxLAhipsterit’s available exclusively at Fresh n Easy for just $7.99. Sweet!

After getting adequately boozy, we got makeovers courtesy of Le Metier De Beaute (pronounced “leh meh-tee-ay deh byoo-tay”). My makeup guy schooled me in what makes them so special. Apparently all their powders and shadows are “quadruple milled” as opposed to the double or triple milling of traditional makeup allowing for a finer grained texture and smoother application. And their liquid eyeliner is made by the same folks as Mont Blanc (you know, those $200 pens).

The prices of the different products ranged from $40-$70 which is probably a bit more for a non-makeup-wearing gal like me, but if you’re into the fancy stuff like Chanel and La Mer, it’s probably very reasonable.

After we got all prettied up by the makeup artists, we jumped at the chance to get our brows groomed by celebrity eyebrow threader Marco Ochoa. His clients include folks like Khloe Kardasian and Janice Dickinson. I was slightly taken aback by handsome Marco and his perfectly straight and flowing hair. But once I sat in his chair, I knew he would take good care of my brows. The process is so much less painless than waxing and it lasts longer, too.

I was a bit peeved when a beautiful young Latina gal interrupted my threading session to chit chat with Marco in perfect Spanish, but in researching this blogpost, I realized that she was the Fernanda Romero of Telemundo fame.

Once I was finished, all I could say was “Wow, my eyebrows are so…symmetrical!” I was definitely digging my new brows and wanted to squeal like a little girl! You can make appointments with Marco at Vert salon on Abbott Kinney.

The entire event was also a fundraiser and awareness-raiser for Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), a non-profit organization supporting advances in cancer research and funding. It is headed up by a Laura Ziskin speaking about SU2CHollywood bigshot producer and cancer survivor Laura Ziskin who produced a few little movies you may have heard of called Spiderman. One woman shared her tale about how she lost all her eyebrows and eyelashes during chemotherapy and how code.ai helped restore not only her lashes/brows, but also her dignity.

On our way out, they gave us a little goodie bag with a small sample of code.ai’s Brow Boosting Shaper product. We’ll see how that goes!

I’m Outtie for November: Meet My CoC Guest Bloggers

So I’m supposed to be on hiatus for this month of November but turns out that blogging is my form of procrastination. In any case, to help me be good, I’ve enlisted the help of my friends and fellow bloggers to guest blog while I’m “out.”

Here’s a quick who’s who that may grow and/or change but please make these folks feel at home. Some of them are newbie bloggers, some of them don’t even have blogs, most of them have been my plus ones to many events. I just thought it would be cool to welcome a bunch of different voices here for a change.

@busybethf is a longtime friend and a new vlogger — BusyBethF channel on YouTube. A native Angeleno, she loves wine and food and all things yummy. That’s why she’s been my plus one for the past two AWFF events.

@fauxlahipster is an admittedly sporadic blogger for her site, Faux LA Hipster. In any case, she goes out more than I do and stays out longer, too. I dare anyone to try and keep up with this girl.

@tinynancer has her own fairly new blog called The Wanderkind about travel, food, etc. She’s very smart, opinionated and tiny. Plus she actually cooks and I always try to get her to write about her adventures in the kitchen because sometimes they’re pretty funny.

@foodmarathon actually has his own blog, Food Marathon, where he goes on these amazing food marathons. We had collaborated on one earlier this year where it was all bars. Too fun and fuzzy. But he’ll be bringing one of his food adventures to CoC.

Mike Hudson actually doesn’t have his own blog but he does Twitter and blog for Intelligentsia in Venice where he also picks up the weekend shifts. Mike and I go way back as we used to work at the same 9-to-5er.

@bourbonandbleu had kindly volunteered to contribute. I had actually kept running into them at various bars in the city. Josh (Bourbon) and Heather (Bleu) showcase their L.A. booze and food experiences on their Bourbon & Bleu blog.

Kaelin Burns (aka @BurbankExaminer), of the L.A. Hungry? Guides as well as the Hungry? City blog and the Examiner, also volunteered for this little ol’ gig. Obviously she has ample experience reviewing restaurants and covering events.

In the meantime, I plan to still blog occasionally and will definitely keep an eye on things here, formatting the posts and such, but hopefully I’ll be a good girl and finish my off-blog project. Have a great rest of November!

Ludo Bites Pops Up at Royal/T Cafe This December

Chef Ludo. Nice tats!

If you’ve never heard of Chef Ludo Lefebvre (or just @chefludo to his tweeps) before, well, I think it’s about time you crawl out from under that rock, my friend. Quick rundown: He was executive chef at L’Orangerie and Bastide, was nominated by the James Beard Foundation for the Rising Star Chef Award and has appeared on shows like Top Chef Masters and Iron Chef America.

The man is a genius and you really shouldn’t deprive yourself of his cooking a moment longer. Because he alone had the power to turn me off food other than his own for several days after I had dinner at his Ludo Bites pop-up restaurant at BreadBar this past August. I’m saying that his unique culinary creations were so mind-blowing, delectable and nommy that the day after I didn’t feel like putting anything in my mouth that wasn’t a foie gras black Croque Monsieur. I wanted to continue to enjoy what I ate instead of just eating cuz I had to.

Anyway, I had enjoyed a scrumptious dinner with fellow bloggers and just didn’t have the heart to write about it after because what would be the point when the pop-up restaurant was going away the next day? That would have just been a mean thing to do to you.

Fortunately, Chef Ludo is now popping up somewhere else! At Culver City’s Royal/T Cafe next month. You probably know it better as the “Japanese maid bar.” Well, Ludo and Royal/T’s curator Jane Glassman will join forces for 13 short days of dining and art. The art exhibit “In Bed Together” will serve as the backdrop for your foodgasmic experience. And believe me, it’s foodgasmic. So, if you haven’t yet tried out his food, better make your ressies now while they’re still available.
