The Midnight Run: LA Nike+ Human Race 5K/10K

I’ve wanted to run the Nike+ Human Race since it replaced the Nike Run Hit Wonder fun runs and I especially liked the idea of the whole world (well, 30 cities around the world) running together on the same day.

But since the official Nike+ Human Race in Los Angeles was 1) at USC (Go Bruins!) and 2) at midnight, I decided to get my own run going. That was the beauty of the Human Race. You could run wherever you wanted whenever you wanted just as long as you tracked your miles with your Nike+ and did it on October 24 AND you wouldn’t have to pay a registration fee!

So a month before the race, I assembled a team of running blogger friends to join me for a morning run along the beach in Santa Monica that Saturday, after which we would enjoy brunch at Gjelina. It was going to be so fun!

It wasn’t until a week or so before the actual event that I got approached by someone representing Nike asking if I wanted to cover the event — Twitter and/or blog it. The incentive for that? Free race registration, running gear, a Nike+ Sport Kit or Sportband, VIP tickets to the tailgate party before the USC vs. Whomever game the next day as well as tickets to the game itself. Who’s going to say no to that? (Except the party and game part for me.)

But I had to check with my blogger friends first to make sure this was something they wanted to do. The Nike rep said that they were welcome to join, too. After I told them what they’d get for running at midnight instead of at the beach, they were in. So we all got hooked up.

This Weekend: Terrorizin’ Y’alls Neighborhood

As a supplement to my earlier what-to-do-on-Halloween post, I present the following for your consideration. BTW, didja guys see my post about Halloween wine and candy pairings on LA Weekly? Eeeee!

Marked5 Burger: What Do Bloggers Think of It?

There are so many food trucks out there now that it’s hard to be able to try them all, but this past Saturday after brunch in Venice with H.C. of LA and OC Foodventures, Sonja of Active Foodie and my friend Mei-Mei we spotted the Marked5 truck (Japanese style burgers). Even though we had just eaten at Gjelina we still felt compelled to check it out.

Mei-Mei was nice enough to spring for the Torakku beef burger for us to split. Made with Angus beef marinated in “Marked5 secret Torakku sauce” as well as Romaine lettuce, vegetables and rice buns, it basically looks like a burger (Carl’s Jr. burger size) with white rice buns. That’s why the chef couldn’t split it four ways for us. He said it would just fall apart. So instead we treated it like a communal burger. Hey, we’re all friends here.

H.C. took the first bite while we anxiously waited to hear his thoughts. He doesn’t say it in the video but eventually he did relay, “Marked5 is all right, if a little messy. I’ll give it a try again if I spotted them.” M’OK. I had enjoyed my bite of the burger, too, well enough but would have preferred to get the Katsu Pork which has received high praise in the blogosphere and just sounds yummy: “tender boneless pork fried to golden perfection served with Marked5′s special Katsu sauce along with fresh cabbage” and the rice buns. But their off-the-menu spam and egg sandwich sounded intriguing, too!

The great thing about the Marked5 truck is that everything costs just 5 bucks. “So for all of you it would have been only $20 for lunch,” said the guy at the truck. We all looked at each other since we had just dropped about $30 a person at Gjelina earlier. D’oh! Oh well.

Hopefully I’ll run into the Marked5 truck again soon. They don’t seem to be as Web-savvy as Kogi, but that’s OK. Marked5 does have a Twitter that fans can follow if the calendar on their site hasn’t been updated.

Brunch at Gjelina: Experiencing the Mr. Hyde Side

misc 011

Have you ever given someone a compliment and then wished you could take it back because they turned out to be an a-hole? Well that’s how I feel about Gjelina in Venice. I LOVED having dinner there, that scrumptious flat bread pizza! But when I had brunch there this past weekend with bloggers Active Foodie (Sonja) and LA OC Foodventures (H.C.) the experience was bad enough to make me question my own previous judgment.

Was I blinded by the truffle oil, grilled nectarines and butterscotch pot de creme to not have been able to notice all the attitude? Yes, during this round on a Saturday morning, there was attitude from the hostess and our server.

Let’s start at the beginning. This brunch was supposed to be a post-Nike Human Race event when I had organized my own run with my blogger friends. So when I had made the reservation a month ago it was for eight people. But when we all decided to do the run at USC on Friday night instead, many in the group wanted to sleep in the next day so our group dwindled down to four.

Whisky Live: Drinking Around the World in 3 Hours

Johnnie Walker girls

Creme brulee, caramel, espresso, pralines, prunes. Before I attended the Whisky Live event this week, my default descriptors for good whisky were “smooooth” and “yummy!” But after getting the chance to talk to the reps from such distilleries like Bushmills, Four Roses, Glenlivet, Johnnie Walker and Macallan, to name but a few, and try a vast variety of whisky, I’ve actually managed to expand my vocabulary. Woo hoo!

Last Tuesday, me and my blogfather, Michael, were lucky enough to gain VIP entrance to the Whisky Live event at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. There I ran into not only some of my favorite online personalities like Lesley of Tasting Table and Dawson from Yelp but old friends like H.C. of LA OC Foodventures and John of Social Domain as well as booze community big shots like Vincenzo Marianella of Copa d’Oro and Christina Perozzi, the Beer Chick. We were all here for the same purpose: to partake of and enjoy the different whiskies in attendance.
