The Edison’s Midnight Breakfast Debuts Tonight

203.jpg

The Edison Downtown is certainly doing its part to keep me fat! Maple-candied bacon? Ayeeee! Tonight the downtown hotspot debuts its Midnight Breakfast menu for those with late-night munchies. Going forward, breakfast will be served every Friday and Saturday from 11:30pm to 1am. However, since those are the busiest nights for the Edison, good luck finding a place to sit down and tuck in.

Here’s the menu; everything is $13 each.

  • Monte Cristo: Black Forest ham and Gruyere cheese sandwich with powdered sugar, maple syrup and strawberry compote
  • Edison Silver Dollar Stack: Wild blueberry buttermilk pancakes, maple-candied bacon, lemon butter and syrup
  • Nutella-Banana Crepes: Vanilla crepes stuffed with brown butter bananas, Nutella, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and chopped hazelnuts
  • The Boiler Room Benedict: Crispy British muffin, slow poached eggs, pancetta bacon and chive hollandaise
  • Working Joe Breakfast: The works, diner-style – two eggs, home fries, short stack and candied bacon

For what to drink with your “midnight breakfast”, I’m thinking the English Afterthought (gin, St. Germain liqueur, muddled blueberries and ginger) and/or Amelie (Ron Matusalem Classico, bitters, crushed strawberries and cucumber and effervescence).

Fuego at the Maya: Spiked Horchata and Mexican Ice Box Cake

El Presidente's Cadillac margarita

El Presidente Cadillac Margarita

“You came all the way down here for my birthday?” my friend Sarah asked me after the cocktails just arrived at our table at Fuego in Long Beach’s Hotel Maya, formerly Coast Long Beach). “Of courrrse!” I replied. We’ve been through a lot together, dressing up like French maids in Buttonwillow’s 90-degree heat and sporting matching Elvis pompadours in Reno. Least I could do was drive all the way down to Long Beach from the Westside…through rush-hour traffic…in the middle of the week.

“Nah, you’re going to blog about this place,” she smirked. Well, and that, too, I wanted to say. I mean, she’s 25% right. Of course I wanted to celebrate her birthday with her but on the other hand cocktails at LBC’s month-old hotel didn’t hurt either.

And here we were, four girls on a Wednesday night, enjoying the beautiful patio with a view of the city, which now resembles a rave with all its colored lights. The evening was balmy but for some reason this new bar/restaurant was fairly empty. “Well it is a Wednesday night,” one of the girls said. “But in L.A….” I started to say then stopped myself. Whatevs, I liked it like this. We had an attentive waiter and nothing to distract us from the task at hand: Getting the birthday girl blitzed.

This Weekend: F Yeah, Ferris vs. Pee-Wee, KCRW Music 24/7

Woo hoo! Holiday weekend! I’m gonna do that Barnsdall Swingers event and the Vincent Thomas Bridge run. What are you kids up to?

Los Pobladores: History Walk to Los Angeles 2009
I’ve always wanted to do this historical walk and retrace the steps of those who founded our city back in 1781. It’s #88 on my 100 bucket list! The route is about 9 miles and will take about three hours complete but it’s downhill and ends at Olvera Street where everyone will celebrate with some traditional dancing, a birthday cake for L.A.’s 228th birthday and of course a pinata.

  • 6am. San Gabriel Mission, 416 S Mission Drive, San Gabriel (map). Info: (213) 628-1274.

Paul F. Tompkins presents Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure
Comedian Paul F. Tompkins (Mr. Show, The Sarah Silverman Program) is awesome. That’s all there is to it. And the fact that he’s going to present Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure at the Silent Movie Theatre, well, why wouldn’t you go? Says Paul, “The movie is funny and silly and inventive and old-fashioned, yes, but overall it seems to revel in the pure joy of comedy. It’s as if the movie is saying, ‘What’s better than laughing?’”

  • 8-11pm. $14. Cinefamily @ Silent Movie Theatre, 611 N Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles (map).

Cemetery Screening: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Aww, my fave John Hughes movie of all time. What kid didn’t want to be Ferris? He was so charismatic, and talk about being born under a lucky star. Break out your picnic of pizza from “Chez Quis” and some cola (and whiskey) and enjoy this tale of the best sick day in history. A great back-to-school movie. Oh wait, I don’t have to go to back to school. HA-ha!

  • Gates open at 7pm. $10. Hollywood Forever Cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

KCRW Launches 24-Hour Music Channel, Eclectic24
Ever wish that KCRW played only songs? They do have an awesome music director and DJs. Well, on Labor Day, the renowned station launches Eclectic24, a new, online, all-music channel that blends the tastes of all the KCRW DJs and streams it 24/7. It’s also a channel on the KCRW iPhone app. Yay!

Barnsdall Outdoor Movie Nights: Swingers and Silverlake Wine Beer Tasting

Thanks to my co-worker and guy about town, Glenn, for giving me the heads-up just now about this really awesome-sounding event at Barnsdall this Saturday. For this weekend’s Barnsdall Outdoor Movie Night, not only will they screen one of my fave L.A.-based movies, Swingers, but Silverlake Wine will present a beer tasting of four artisanal brews!

Come early to enjoy some refreshing beer before you watch Mike and Trent’s excellent adventure. (Remember how cute Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau used to be?) And then the screening will take place on the West Lawn of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House. You are welcome to bring your own picnic but no outside alcoholic beverages are allowed.

Ice cream truck Coolhaus will be on hand selling its ice cream sandwiches including special Movie Night flavor, Guinness Chip. Duuude! And if you’re not the picnic-packing type, Let’s Be Frank hot dog truck will be there as well to sell grass-fed beef hot dogs and family-farmed pork sausages to all the beautiful babies.

Cost for the movie and beer tasting is $25 and you need to make a reservation. But if you just want to see the movie it’s $10 and no rsvp required.

All profits from this event will go to Barnsdall Art Park Foundation programs and projects. Yay!

Reservoir: Savory Succotash, Sylvester!

Scallops with corn succotash

I thought Reservoir in Silver Lake was going to be really fancy and high priced considering its chef, Gloria Felix, came from the hallowed kitchens of A.O.C., Grace, Jar and Lucques. “Thank gawd this is a hosted dinner, else I wouldn’t be able to afford a thing,” I thought as I sat in rush-hour traffic during the grueling trek over from Santa Monica.

But to my surprise there were items on the dinner menu that I could actually afford without giving up ingredients, like the $10 chorizo, quince, and asiago cheese pizza, the grilled watermelon salad with jalapeno vinaigrette ($12) and a pan-seared chicken breast dinner ($18). The burger here is still a wince-inducing $14 (for a burger!) but apparently it’s worth it.

Since the restaurant, formerly Silver Lake institution Netty’s, is small with only 40 seats, our media dinner was likewise intimate with only six media folk (an equal mix of bloggers and journalists). We sat at the table with the best view of the restaurant and bar, alongside the wall of open windows which made the small space feel airy.
