A New Challenge: Conquer the Bridge 2009 5-Mile Race

Flickr shot by sryffel

Sure, you probably love driving over the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro on your way to the LBC but how about running that long ascent on your own two feet? That uphill not so fun, those expansion grates kinda tricky. But this Conquer the Bridge 2009 race was two years in the making because it was pending approval from the local and state agencies all this time. It’s also the first running event allowed over the Bridge in over a decade. So I HAVE to run it!

The USATF-sanctioned course will start off in San Pedro off 5th Street and continue on the bridge where the turn-around occurs at the Amazon Thunder U-turn. It’ll be a challenging course fer sure so no strollers, no dogs and no bikes allowed. But if you want to walk it instead of run it, you can. I might have to on the way back although I will try my hardest to resist.

As for the parking situation, since the race will be on Labor Day, there will be ample parking! Which is great because there won’t be bag checks.

Another great thing about this race? You can do a celebratory brunch in San Pedro! Who’s with me?

BTW, today is the last day to register for $32. Tomorrow, the reg fee goes up to $37.

Mmm, Gourmet Junk Food: The Fig’s Santa Monica Pier Centennial Menu

santamonicapier20s.JPG

Wow can you believe that our Santa Monica Pier is gonna be 100 years old? An amazing feat in a city that rails against age and is big on “out with the old and in with the new.” The actual Centennial Day ceremony takes place on September 9 at the pier and involves a 100-foot cake, Robert Redford and a large-scale fireworks. But The Fig at the Fairmont in Santa Monica will also be doing some pre-celebrating of the century-old landmark in its own special way. With a gourmet twist on pier junk food classics:

ON A STICK

  • Cheese on a Stick $6
  • Wagyu Corn Dog $9
  • Lobster Corn Dog $7
  • Scotch Duck Egg $7

ON BREAD

  • Pancetta Burger with Sun Dried Tomato Relish $14
  • Cheese Steak Sandwich $10
  • Bratwurst on a Pretzel Roll $9
  • Cashew Butter, Roaring 40s and Jelly Sandwich $8

IN A BASKET

  • Parmesan Fries $6
  • Sweet Potato Fries $5
  • Blue Cheese Filled Buffalo Chicken $9
  • Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers $8

And yes, I’ve already asked if they were gonna do special cocktails, too, for the occasion. Spiked root beer floats and milkshake cocktails! But unfortunately, there are no plans for that…but I did get them thinking.

In any case, you can enjoy your lobster corn dogs and bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers either at the restaurant or take it to go and walk down to the pier to make the tourists envious. This special “Pre Pier” menu will be available for lunch and dinner starting Thursday, September 3 and run through to centennial day on Wednesday the 9th.

EVENT: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 to WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

Colorado Wine Company’s White Trash Wine Tasting 2009

cheese_whiz.jpg
It’s baaack! Colorado Wine Company’s White Trash Wine Tasting where wine aficionados need to just get over themselves and surrender to the unusual pairings of tater tot casserole and Pinot Noir.

This annual down-home wine event, brilliantly conceived by CoWineCo owners Jennifer and John Nugent, offers all of the education of a wine tasting with none of the snobbery. How could you turn your nose up when biting into a pork rind? I went last year and had a hee-haw good time getting edumacated on how 7-Eleven fare could pair with some fine, affordable wines.

This year’s menu offers yet another series of truly inspired pairings:

  • Ecorces Frites de Porc (fried pork rinds) paired with Bastide Blanche Bandol 2005, France.
  • Fromage Liquide Sur le Pain Blanc (cheese whiz rolled in Wonder bread) paired with Vinedo de los Vientos Estival White 2007 from Atlantida in Uruguay.
  • Cocotte en Terre Frite de Cube en Pomme de Terre (tater tot casserole) paired with the Ken Brown Duncan’s Cuvee Pinot Noir 2006 from the Santa Rita Hills in California.
  • Sucrerie de Citron Enveloppée Par Bacon (bacon-wrapped lemonheads) paired with the HM Borges 10 Year Old Reserve Malmsey Reserva Madeira from Portugal.

“Bacon-wrapped lemonheads”?! Scary! And yet oh-so intriguing. And Wonder bread? Haven’t had that in years but am ready to wash it down with a Uruguayan white.

Well, it’s the third year for this event and as in previous years it’s sure to sell out FAST so you need to RSVP ASAP as they only have about 100 spots.

EVENT: SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 from 5 to 8pm

My 10 Favorite iPhone Applications

My Fave iPhone Apps

Powered by ThisNext. Get Widget!

I frickin’ LOVE my new iPhone and if you’ve seen me lately you’ve probably noticed that my iPreciousss is permanently attached to my left hand, sometimes my right when I have to open doors and stuff. But as soon as I got it, I went crazy with the applications. They really do have an app for everything!

Now besides the blogger basics like Tweet Deck, Facebook, Loopt, Brightkite, Yelp, UrbanSpoon…pfew!…Tumblr, Flickr Mobile Fotos, Free Wifi, here’s a list of my faves thus far:

DrinkTracker ($1.99): This is a good guide to keep track of how many drinks I’ve had and how long it’ll take me to get my BAC to at least below 0.02. Only thing is, I still have to remember to enter drinks when I drink ‘em. And it’s fine if I have a glass of wine or beer but if I want to enter cocktails, I’m lost. There’s no listing or database for cocktails. You can add a new drink to the list but you’d have to know how many ounces it has as well as what percent alcohol. Um! But I won’t give up on it. I think it’s a handy tool.

Epicurious (free): I’m not much of a cook but I love the fact that this app contains recipes from Bon Appétit, Gourmet, Self, Cookie and Parade. That’s about 25,000 recipes to choose from! There’s even a “Cool Cocktails” section where you can find recipes for Bon Appetit‘s The Widow’s Touch to Self‘s Watermelon Rum Mash. And the shopping list feature allows you to save your fave recipes so you have them handy when picking up ingredients at the grocery store. The only thing is that since it’s a free app, the occasional ad pops up. Meh.

Flip N Drink ($1.99): This special cocktail application features recipes from renowned mixologists, like Ryan Magarian (who created Westside Tavern‘s cocktail menu). It also offers some cocktail history, drool-inducing cocktail photos and suggestions of other cocktails you might like.

Going.com (Free): I just started using this one but love how it’s a combination of Brightkite and Yelp functions in that you can pick a venue to meet your friends and then share the location with them so they can meet up wit choo. You can also rate the place in real time and tell your friends whether they should avoid it or “get here now.” Of course it helps if all your peeps are on Going.com, too.

iWhiskey ($10.99): This is great for when you’re at a cool bar that has a huge variety of whiskey or if you’re lost in the whiskey aisle at Wally’s Wine & Spirits. This app features 600 reviews by Paul Pacult (founder of Beverage Alcohol Resource) on different brands of the brown spirit — from American, Irish, etc. to most expensive and five stars. It has purty pictures of cocktails which you can tap once to flip over and get the recipe of.

KCRW Fringe Benefits (Free): Get the most out of your KCRW membership with this free app. It lists over 1,000 businesses that honor your discount card. And with its handy-dandy GPS function, you can locate which ones are in the 3-, 5- or 10-mile radius. It’ll even map out how to get there or offers a direct dial feature so you can call ahead for ressies or hours.

Nat Decants ($2.99): Now since I don’t cook the chances that I’ll have to plan which wine to serve with which dish are nil, but I still like playing with this app that pairs drinks (i.e. red or white wine) to food and food to drinks. Wonder what goes with Mead? Why that would be orange glazed cornish hens of course. What pairs well with bourbon? Why, bacon! Mmm.

OpenTable (Free): Rarely do I eat anywhere that requires a reservation. I’m not that fancy, but just in case, this is a cool app to have at the ready. At the tap of the screen, I can find out which restaurant in my area can seat my party of four at 7:30 tonight.

Miscellaneous:

iFitness ($1.99): I’m not crazy about those apps that let you keep track of what you’ve eaten because I don’t like having to search for the exact thing I ate just to count some calories. I do, however, love this gym-friendly app. You can search a database of 115 exercises to find which best works out those arms, legs, back, etc. and also keep track of your workout. It also uses pics of real people with detailed instructions on how to perform each rep. The only thing is that it seems to be targeted for men in terms of saying which exercise will help increase their shirt size. As if women don’t work out, too. Hmf.

WordJong ($2.99): I discovered this hybrid of Mah Jong and Scrabble for my DS but was ecstatic to find that there’s an app for it, too! I love playing this game when I’m just waiting in line, waiting for someone or having a quiet moment. I like it because I don’t need good hand-eye coordination to play it and it’s not the sort of game where if I make the wrong move my car blows up or I die. Peaceful music and smiley Kung Fu Panda-like animals. Aaaah.

Any other applications I should look into?

First Run of BottleRock Downtown Tasting Menu Mondays

IMG_9662

Honestly, even though there’s a perfectly good chef and a perfectly good kitchen, I never really considered BottleRock Downtown a dining destination before. Wine, beer and beer floats, yes. Actual food food? Not so much. That is until its resident beer geek Alex Macy invited me to check out a food tasting the wine bar is looking to do regularly on Monday nights; popularity willing. Apparently this is something that they just started doing for the public, as well as for private parties but it’s on Mondays when you get both Executive Chef Jared Levy and Sous Chef Viet Pham in the kitchen. And that’s when things get really creative.

Last night, Johnny the Fish of Social Domain was my companion on this three-hour culinary journey where I went through a gamut of emotions from fear, elation, shock to pure contentment. I experienced the circle of life, from the egg vessel of the Champagne Sabayon to the violent death of a prawn. Of course, it helped that we sat at the bar stools located right in front of the window looking into the kitchen. Not great for the servers to get to but awesome for the diners in that you feel like you’re at the chef’s table. Plus it’s a great vantage point for blowing kisses at the chef should the mood strike you. And believe me, it will.

Under One Umbrella Event: Chef Tastings and Molecular Mixology

under.jpg

Event production group Salt of the Earth and event catering company Epicurean Umbrella present an unusual night of collaborative chef tastings and molecular mixology at the Mark in West L.A. this Thursday.

Unlike most food events, this one will be set up like a gallery exhibition instead of food festival or seated dinner. Every hour, chefs Renieri Caceres (of Botero at Encore in Vegas), Tomas Rivera (co-founder of Salt of the Earth) and Al Gordon (co-founder of Epicurean Umbrella) will each present a tasting plate, which are the size of a bread/salad plate, to be passed to guests. You’ll know which chef you’re getting by the colored lighting shining that particular hour. It’s so crazy that it might just work!

Here’s a sample of the evening’s menu.

Some of the tasting plates:

  • Brioche crusted scallop with fresh corn pudding (this is presented with the truffle potato salad on crostini wrapped in kobe beef)
  • The “nachos” are side by side of ahi tuna tartare and Asian duck over crispy house-made tortilla chips and wonton strips
  • The burger bite is a mini pulled shortrib sandwich with micro greens and matchstick fries

The bars:

  • The gourmet potato chip bar features Peruvian blue, sweet potato, root vegetable and classic russet chips; with mini crudite and trio of chef select aiolis and dipping sauces
  • Dessert bars featuring all in miniature: chocolate caramel hazelnut tarts, chocolate pudding cream dessert shot with vanilla bean creme, red velvet and citrus cupcakes with Italian meringue buttercream and cream cheese icing
  • Retro candy bar featuring nostalgic candy from the ’50s, ’60s and 70′s

And what you’ve been waiting for, the cocktails by San Francisco’s Liquid Alchemy:

  • The molecular cotton candy cocktail features Liquid Alchemy’s signature martini poured over citrus-infused cotton candy floss
  • The Kir Royale cocktail features tiny blackberry gelee pearls composed in calcium carbonate chloride and sodium alginate
  • The micro basil gimlet features liquid nitrogen in stainless-steel rings to create the perfect frozen cocktail “bite”

If you want to join in the food fun (I’ll be there!), tickets are $52 a person and can be purchased online or by calling (323) 350-0953.
