Ass-Kicking Workout in Los Liones Canyon

OK, picture isn’t of Los Liones but didn’t want to risk my camera on this hike. :).

One of my favorite hiking trails in L.A. is Los Liones Canyon in Santa Monica. So easy to get to, no parking fee and a great mix of rugged trails through the woods and fire roads that lead up to this gorgeous view at the overlook, aka Topanga Overlook aka Parker Mesa Overlook, where on a clear day you can see downtown Los Angeles, Rancho Palos Verdes and I think even Catalina. It’s a quick and awesome workout not only for its six miles but for its many ups and downs. You often see cougars (divorcees not mountain lions) fast walking, hard-core mountain bikers powering up the fire roads and Sierra Club members enjoying the scenery. But there’s a little known way to make it even more of a kick-ass workout.

You know how usually at the Los Liones trailhead, you take the path to the right once you walk through the gate? Well, the butt-kicking workout actually begins when you take the often overlooked trail on your left. It dives down across a concrete ditch and ducks into some bushes. This path cuts a more direct route to the overlook, meaning you’re scrambling up steep ascents and always going up, up, up. Once at the top, you just take the fire roads back down. A welcome respite after that intense initial climb but also you don’t want to try going back down the way you came.

I’m not sure how many miles this way is but it had me sweating so hard that I thought it was raining. Plus I had to stop several times to catch my breath. Those hills are a bitch! But at least now my butt cheeks will be able to crush walnuts. Heh.

We used to go on the regular trail in the daytime but since those fire roads are so brutal midday with the sun beating down on us, we found it’s best to go during early evening. Since the sun goes down around 8pm this time of year and the hike takes about two hours round trip, including a 15-minute break at the overlook, we have to start off at 6. Last week we barely made it back to the parking lot before it was completely dark out. I was using the light from my phone to illuminate the tricky sections of the path through the woods while trying to suppress childhood fears of hockey-mask-wearing Jason emerging from the bushes.

My bf and I did this hike last Friday and I’m so excited that we’re going to do it again today after work because it’s such a great way to end the work week after sitting at our desks for hours on end. Woo hoo!

For shoes, trailrunners might be a bit better for this hike since you’ll appreciate something lighter than big hiking boots when you’re securing your place in footholds up the hills. And don’t forget to bring a bottle of water to keep hydrated as well as a snack to reward yourself while sitting on the bench at the overlook.

Trailhead: Take Pacific Coast Highway to Sunset Boulevard, turn right at Sunset, then less than a half mile turn left at Los Liones Drive (no traffic light for this but it’s past the Jack in the Box). Take Los Liones Drive til you reach a church. There’s a parking lot right across from the church (map).

Dear Caroline on Crack: Downtown Hotel Bar That Screams Sex?

Rick's Place at Figueroa Hotel

Photo from Figueroa Hotel’s site.

Hey, fruitcake.

T-Dawg, here. Long time no see. Hope you’re well.

Two things (three things, actually):

1. You’re awesome.

2. I’m surprised that Del’s Saloon in Santa Monica isn’t mentioned on your site (or perhaps I missed it). Real Cadillac margaritas (super strong, with Cointreau and Grand Marnier) for $7. After drinking two — in rocks glasses, mind you — my friend stumbled to my car, puked on the seat, and passed out in it. I think we can both appreciate that kind of endorsement.

3. Can you recommend a good downtown hotel bar? Something that screams “sex” would be ideal.

Thanks,

T-Dawg

Eat & Drink Beer: Unibroue Beer Dinner at Akasha

akasha 014

Wine dinners are sooo 2008. I say, now it’s all about beer dinners where not only are the courses paired with beer but they have beer in their ingredients, too! Wine dinners don’t even carry it that far. Notes this, nuance that. Blah. OK, maybe wine dinners won’t ever go out of style but judging from the extreme yumminess of the Unibroue beer dinner at Akasha last night, I’d say brewski dining is the way to go. And they don’t feel as snobby.

Yup, this is only the second such dinner that the Culver City organic restaurant has ever hosted and it makes me wonder why don’t more venues do the same thing? It was brilliant. On this night, Unibroue was the featured brewery (last beer dinner two weeks ago it was New Belgium) and I’ve enjoyed its Chambly Noire and Trois Pistoles plenty but never to the point where food is used to bring out its flavor. I never knew those beers could taste even better.

Chef Akasha Richmond worked with Unibroue to design a five-course menu around five of its beers and I was invited to partake of this dinner alongside bloggers Food GPS and estarLA (it was hosted for us, all others paid $55). Unibroue rep, Mike Smith, was our guide through the courses, edumacating us on each beer’s history and flavor notes.

The night’s menu along with my notes after the jump…

The Edison’s Radio Room: Tonight Featuring Las Vegas/San Francisco Mixologists

The bar in the Radio Room

Tonight’s Radio Room aka “speakeasy night with guest starring bartenders” at the Edison downtown features Amanda Gager from Las Vegas and Jacqueline “Jackie” Patterson from San Francisco who, in addition to making fab cocktails at Heaven’s Dog, is recently known for creating a cocktail to pair with a cocktail dress! Noice!

And here’s their menu available only for tonight:

Angeleno Magazine’s 7th Annual Chef’s Night Out at the Fairmont

I was soo naughty yesterday. I broke my dairy fast to indulge at Angeleno Magazine’s 7th Annual Restaurant Awards and Chef’s Night Out. But how could I say no to all the goodies prepared by some of L.A.’s renowned chefs, most award winners featured in the magazine’s new Restaurant issue?

The Fairmont Santa Monica’s front park under the beautiful, 130-year-old fig tree was the setting for this annual foodie fantasy event. My bf and I arrived in time for the VIP reception which gained us early entrance and shorter lines to all the wine and spirits. True, they were only giving tasting portions at the tables but Casa Noble cocktails were also being passed to the crowd. After a sip of the award-winning Wild Turkey Russell’s Rye (Double Gold for Best Rye) and Parker’s Heritage Collection Kentucky Straight Bourbon (Double Gold for Best Brown Spirit) as well as the tasty Casa Noble Teqtonic cocktail (tequila and tonic water) I got a good buzz going on. So I said no to the tequila tasting but I found myself saying yes to things I otherwise would have had the discipline to turn down.

Blogger Prom 2009: Backstory and Wrap-Up

Blogger Prom Committee exhausted by happy

It started out on a whim, Blogger Prom 2009, that is. A bunch of us bloggers were walking from a Macallan Scotch Tasting at the Viceroy to dinner at the just opened La Grande Orange in Santa Monica when it came up. As food bloggers we found ourselves running into each other a lot at the same events, the same venues, the same blogger dinners and figured why not have a huge event for just bloggers.

We’ve always wanted to do this sort of event, to get to know the faces behind the blogs. As it is we only recognize each other’s blog names or Twitter names. I had thrown a blogger night at the Edison’s Radio Room before and everyone got a thrill from meeting each other and asked me to do it again. And I know there are other blogger gettogethers for the other genres out there but what about one big one to bring all bloggers together?

First Esther aka EstarLA and I talked about where we’d have it. Initially it was going to be at Bar Lubitsch, the setting for my blogiversary blowout last year. But then Esther got the bigtime hookup at the Andaz (the “Riot Hyatt”) in West Hollywood. She had written a blog post before about her meh experience there and I guess they wanted to make amends, which lead to a lunch with the Andaz folks. Blogger Prom came up and they offered to do the food, the parking and most importantly, they offered us their grand ballroom space at the top of the hotel. Once Esther and I saw the view of our beautiful city from up there when we were checking out the space, we knew our L.A blogger prom had to be there.
