Rose Cafe: An Old Breakfast Hang Revisited

IMG_6910

When I was a struggling 20-something who lived in meh Mar Vista, one of the things I used to do to feel like I was really treating myself was hang out at the Rose Cafe in Venice while enjoying a continental breakfast.

No, not in the fancy, pricier full-service restaurant but rather the counter serviced cafe that had seat-yourself areas inside and out on the back patio. I’d read an LA Weekly or write in my journal while sunning on the patio and savoring a buttery croissant with brie and a strong cup of coffee, all for only $5! Afterward, I’d saunter down to the beach or the farmer’s market on Main.

Ah, good times. In any case I haven’t been back in years; about a decade to be exact. Nowadays, there are so many other places I’d rather breakfast and, yes, they’re a bit pricier but at least they’re more substantial.

It wasn’t until just last week when I got an email from Dex, a small architectural design studio in Venice, that I decided to revisit my breakfast nook. Apparently the design firm is responsible for the brand-new patio that now graces the cafe’s back area. FYI, they also redid the Alibi Room and Redondo Beach’s Hudson House.

Instead of just that concrete floor and plastic patio chairs that look like they’re from someone’s backyard, there are now a series of decks that sport redwood benches and surround an old-growth Coral tree that has been a part of restaurant’s history since it opened in 1979. There is also a new firepit to keep customers warm once the cafe extends its hours to dinner time later this summer.

Unfortunately, when I went back, my bf and I decided to forgo the cafe and nifty new patio for the more extensive brunch menu and crowded patio on the restaurant side. Continental just wasn’t going to cut it this morning. But although I did enjoy my Eggs Scandia ($11.95) of poached eggs over salmon, dill hollandaise and croissant, it took forever for us to finally get our food! BTW, bf was very unimpressed by the tofu scramble, but then again it IS a tofu scramble.

Sure, the coffee and water refills came regularly but our breakfast took so long to arrive that we ended up going over the hour time limit for validated free parking in the lot out back.

Yes, we did peruse the gift shop after brunch but didn’t take THAT long. So, yeah, wasn’t crazy about the wait or the prices for what we got. (You call that a fruit salad?) I think I’ll just stick to continental breakfast on the self-service side from now on. Take my scooter here, grab a bench in the corner of the back patio and revisit that flaky croissant, brie, jam and java.

BTW, you can still get the continental breakfast with regular coffee for under $5 and with an espresso drink for under $6 if you’re feeling particularly lah-dee-dah.

Surfing Cowboys: Where I Found My Awesome New-Old Desk

http://ep.yimg.com/ip/I/surfingcowboys_2060_2033363

Seems like I’ve been on the hunt FOR-EVER for a desk on which to compose my provocative, intelligent, world-changing prose, OK, on which to blog about stuff I drank. I’ve scoured the ads on Craigslist, perused new furniture stores and thrift shops and even considered, albeit briefly, IKEA. But I could never seem to find anything that suited me.

All I knew is that I wanted it to be a midcentury-style wood desk on the smallish side but with not too many drawers (cuz I’d just end up stuffing those with soon-to-be-forgotten paperwork) and it had to be brown wood, not black, blonde or white. It’s a whole feng shui thing with me. Such a desk probably would have been a cinch to find if I didn’t have a very limited budget. At first I was unrealistically looking at the $100-$200 price range but that only got me desks without personality or really ratty ones.

But one day when I actually Googled “midcentury wood desk,” one showed up locally at the Surfing Cowboys furniture store on Abbot Kinney in Venice, and it was so purty! Only problem is that it’s $450. But then when I http://ep.yimg.com/ip/I/surfingcowboys_2059_563506149considered how long I’ve been looking for a desk and that another midcentury desk that I had fallen in love with had a $2,600 price tag, I reasoned that this would be a great birthday present to myself as well as an investment in my writing/blogging career.

The Surfing Cowboys, a vintage furniture store dedicated to relaxed, beachy Californian living, has been in business for about 11 years now and is run by Wayne and Donna Gunther, both former commercial fashion photographers. They have soo many cute things in their store, from Eames furniture to rare surfer memorabilia. Of course not everything in the store fits my budget but again, I was looking at this desk as an investment.

And what’s great about this place is that you don’t get a snobby vibe or a high-pressured sales pitch. When I had walked in the store, passed by a lounging German Shepherd and inquired about the desk, Wayne was so helpful, even pulling the desk out from the nook which was formerly a bathroom in this photography studio-turned-furniture store so that I could see how it was on leveled ground. He even fetched a chair for me so I could get a feel for what it was like to sit at the desk.

Of course at this point, I was sold. “I’ll take it!” I said. “But first tell me the story behind this desk. I like stories.” “Well, we picked it up in San Francisco and it’s from the 1960s,” Wayne offered. That was good enough for me. Later my bf said that I should have tried bargaining with them since the desk had been on sale for awhile but I’m not the bargaining type. Plus it’s a store; do people bargain in stores?

In any case, even though Wayne and Donna give off that laidback surfer vibe, they are pretty diligent about updating their store’s inventory on their Web site (although my desk is still on there) as well as maintain a blog and a Twitter account!

BTW, if you aren’t in the market for any vintage furniture, surfer tees or old surfboards, the store is still a fun place to peruse on your leisurely Sunday stroll to that Black Cat Espresso at Intelligentsia Venice. According to the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau, Winter/Spring 2009 issue, it was listed as a can’t-miss stop on the Venice walking tour.

Summer Taste at the Grove: Rose and Rhone

Picture 3.png

Nothing says summer like rose, Rhone and barbecue in the great outdoors! The Learn About Wine’s Summer Taste series event on the little grassy lawn in the center of the Grove on July 1 will feature over 12 tables of the good stuff from all over, like wineries L’Aventure, Clos Solene, Zaca Mesa and Highflyer Wines to name a few. And food will be provided by Wood Ranch BBQ at the mall. Mmm, tri-tip sammich.

Now, the regular price for this event is $60 but you can score tickets on Goldstar for only $27.50 ($7 fee). That’s even cheaper than the price for “Taste members” who pay $39 on top of their $100 membership fee! Hope no one tells them that.

BTW, proceeds from this event will go to TJ Martel Foundation, raising money and awareness for Cancer Research at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Xooro: Spanish Fritters and Freebies

As the mid-afternoon snack attack craving hits, I find myself jonesing for those Xooro (pronounced “sure-OH”) fritters I had yesterday at the store’s new Melrose location during its media sneak preview. The Spanish fritter is basically a churro dusted sugar but this time stuffed with a yummy cream filling. (Stomach grumbling)

And at Xooro you’ll find more here than just the basic fritter. They’ve got a whole selection of yummy options like a maple bacon one (!), triple chocolate and an upcoming banana Nutella combo. Each with different flavor cream fillings and toppings and ranging in price from $3.69 to $4.20.

But if you have a hard-core sweet tooth, you’ll order one of the different kinds of hot or cold chocolate drinks — Spanish, Mexican or dulce de leche white chocolate — to wash down your sweet dough stick. If not, they also have specialty coffees. BTW, word on the street, well, in the store, is that they’re working on some savory xooros. Think a queso-filled snack. Mmmm.

The first Xooro store debuted in Santa Monica last year and since things were going so well, owners Begonia Amaya and Vicente Cisneros (a wife-and-husband team that look like they’re straight out of a Banana Republic ad complete with cute kid Massimo), decided to open up the second location in West Hollywood, right next door to Sweet Lady Jane’s.

Oddly enough, these fritters aren’t as bad for you as you may think a deep-fried dessert could be. Nope, these actually use “healthy frying techniques” by frying with rice bran oil. Because of this the fritters don’t have that oily/greasy residue that you may experience from most churros and you don’t have to feel as guilty.

They’re also made fresh so you may have to wait up to 10 minutes to get them in your greedy hands. And those with wheat allergies will rejoice in the gluten-free xooros!

If you want to sample this unique dessert before you buy, the Melrose location will be passing out FREE samples of their basic xooros tomorrow from 5:30 to 7:30pm. While you’re doing that, I’ll be at the Santa Monica location stocking up on the maple bacon, the Mississippi and maybe the Tiramisu. Eff that, I’m heading over there now.

BLVD 16 Rush Hour Happy Hour: Cheap Small Plates, Swank Lounge

IMG_6293
Looking for a way to kill some time before you hit the CF that is the 405? BLVD 16 at Hotel Palomar on the Wilshire Corridor in Westwood has a surprisingly budget-friendly “rush hour” happy hour for a swank-looking setting. The small plates range in price from $3 to $5 and you can even get a half-glass (2.5-ounce) wine pairing with it from $4-$6 during this brand-new happy hour, 4 to 7pm. Very noice compared to most happy hours with half-off $15 starters or $1 off well drinks.

Here, the good quality small plates created by Executive Chef Simon Dolinky offer a mix of Southern comfort food, pan-Asian fare and general American cuisine, all farmer’s market fresh.

I gorged myself on the unusual crunchy grit fries ($5), a Jazz Fest picnic classic in the South, which were more similar to hash brown bricks than fries but I wasn’t complaining. These were made with white corn grits, so hearty and especially tasty with the spicy creole mustard sauce.

But if you’re famished, pair them with the Carolina-style BBQ Pork “sliders.” They’re just $5 for two regular hamburger-size sliders. $5! A nice deal considering the lounge menu’s Tasty Burger of tomato preserves, jack cheese and crispy onions is $14.

Speaking of the lounge menu, there’s a mac and chevre ($10) that sounds awesome, with goat cheese and rosemary. Unfortunately that’s not part of the happy hour. Boo. But I have to try it soon.

The regular specialty cocktails aren’t discounted either and range in price from the $10 Sunset with Cruzan pineapple rum to the $14 Lady in Red with Ketel One Citroen, but there are a couple of “Kimpton Summer Fun Cocktails” that you can enjoy for just $8.

  • Temptation: Grey Goose Poire, apple juice and ginger beer
  • Honey Kiss: Leblon Cachaca, strawberries and fresh lime

Both refreshingly, light cocktails were created especially for the summer by mixologist Jacques Bezuidenhout for all the Kimpton boutique hotels and will be available through Labor Day.

BTW, if you’re not inclined to sit on your butt during the happy hour, a Wii game console and TV will keep you entertained in the lounge from 5 to 6pm. Mmm, Wii bowling and cocktails.

The only thing not so great about hh here is that there’s very limited street parking around the hotel what with all the permit-only side streets in Westwood. But you can get your valet parking validated and pay $5.

Oh, and if you’re in town for 4th of July Weekend, BLVD 16 is offering a “Red, White & Blue” three-course prix-fixe menu for $35 as well as a special 4×4 menu in the lounge where you can get appetizers for $4 each with the purchase of a cocktail.

The Roger Room: The Secret’s Out

RR_SW.jpg

If you haven’t already read on Eater LA and on some L.A. people’s tweets, Jared Meisler (my old friend and owner of Bar Lubitsch in West Hollywood) and partner Sean MacPherson recently opened up The Roger Room, a beautiful, new, lightly circus-themed bar in the space formerly occupied by the dive-y Coronet Pub. Sigh. My favorite bartender Damian Windsor worked with Jared on the cocktail list and, uh, a couple of my favorites are on there. Blah.

OK, I’m begrudgingly writing about The Roger Room because I like it the way it is now. It’s just three weeks old (opened June 1) and I can still go in there and find a place to sit without having to squeeze through a sphincter of people. It’s really tiny! OK, a bit bigger than The Varnish.

Jared and Damian had even asked visiting media to keep this on the DL because they’re still working out the kinks and they, too, don’t want it to get out of control. They have also enforced a no-photography rule of the bar’s interior. The bouncer reminds you before you walk in. Not even photos of their cocktails! Believe me, I asked. So that’s why I used an iPhone-shot pic that I found online for this post. But I guess in this day and age of Twitter, you really can’t expect to keep anything a secret for too long.

In any case, about the drinks. The cocktail menu features three cocktails for every spirit and here are just some of them.

  • The Grifter ($16): Damian described this as an absinthe mojito. Mata Hari Absinthe, pressed mint, simple syrup, club soda and crushed ice.
  • Old Sport ($13): This was inspired from a cocktail Damian did during his brief stint at Copa d’Oro when it first opened. Cap Rock Gin, black tea-infused Soho lychee liqueur, cucumber juice, lime juice, up.
  • The Pash ($13): Jared and Damian came up with this cocktail of passionfruit juice, Aperol and champagne.
  • Spiced Mule ($13): This gingery cocktail was imported from the Curio Parlour in Paris. Saylor Jerry Spiced Rum, ginger juice, lime juice, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and club soda on the rocks.
  • Spring Street ($13): Damian says this is the cocktail that made his wife fall in love with him, awww. It’s a mojito/Harvey Wallbanger combo, he says. Made with Effen Vodka, mint, orange juice, Galliano and crushed ice.
  • Thug ($12): This is my favorite. With a combo of Maker’s and habanero pepper, how could you go wrong? Maker’s Mark Bourbon, Baronjager Honey Liqueur, lemon juice and spicy habanero bitters on the rocks.
  • Tijuana Brass ($13): If you went to my blogiversary at Bar Lubitsch last year, you probably enjoyed this cucumber margarita. Tres Reyes Blanco, lime juice, agave syrup and cucumber foam on the rocks.

The menu will change of course, so if you see anything you like here you might want to stop by soonish. BTW, there’s also a decent selection of beer (like $10 Delirium Tremens), wine  and premium spirits (mmm, $13 12-year-old Macallan).

As for the cat being out of the bag now. Jared, who has a very good head on his shoulders, knows that, like anything in L.A., the bar’s popularity will probably rage to a peak and then mellow out. I guessss. Well, at least J & D said they’d save a seat for me.
