Hangover Cure: Rush Street’s Red Eye Brunch

Banana and Nutella panini

You had an awesome night of barhopping but one cocktail too many, you mixed your spirits and you didn’t even drink a drop of water before you went to bed. Next morning? Raging headache, and the last thing you want to have for brunch is some buttery pancakes drenched in sweet syrup. Blech!

Fortunately there’s a new hearty brunch menu at Rush Street in Culver City on Saturdays and Sundays. Red-eye burgers, sloppy joes, breakfast paninis and andouille sausage and roasted peppers pizza. Yeah, super hearty.

My bf and I checked out the brunch even though we weren’t really hungover. But by the end of it? We were kinda buzzed.

Well there’s more here than just mimosas and kir royales. You’ve got a brunch drink menu of beer cocktails as well as a well-stocked Bloody Mary bar featuring Santa Barbara Olive Company garlic stuffed olives, blue cheese stuffed olives and spicy habenero olives so you can customize your own cure.

Drinking With the Stars: Maggiano’s Dancing With the Stars Cocktails

This is for my friend JDP who is a huuuuge Dancing With the Stars fan. I’m not so much but ever since I saw that Gilles Marini from the Sex and the City movie displaying his sexay Argentine Tango moves on the show…well, I’ve been keeping an eye on things. But fans of the show are kuh-rayzee for it that’s why I thought they’d appreciate knowing that Maggiano’s Little Italy at the Grove in Midcity has revealed a specialty cocktail menu inspired by DWTS.

In all honesty, these cocktails ($9.75) don’t sound like my cuppa tea, not even Gilles’ Hot Pants, but you may find something you like. I just thought it was fun.

  • Chuck Wickes — Stealing Cinderella: scotch, triple sec, sweet & sour, simple syrup
  • David Alan Grier — Chuckleberry Martini: vodka, raspberry liqueur and triple sec
  • Gilles Marini — Gilles’ Hot Pants: tequila, peppermint schnapps, grapefruit juice and triple sec
  • Holly Madison — Holly’s Playboy Cooler: gold rum, Kahlua, pineapple juice, lime juice and Coke
  • Lawrence Taylor — Lawrence’s Lemon Merengue: vanilla vodka, triple sec and sweet & sour
  • Lil’ Kim — Sweet & Silky: light rum, triple sec and half & half
  • Melissa Rycroft — Wedding Cake Martini: vanilla vodka, amaretto, Godiva white and half & half
  • Shawn Johnson — Go for the Gold: American Honey Whisky, Galliano, buttershots and whipped cream
  • Steve O — The Steve O’rino: vodka, red wine, pineapple juice and triple sec
  • Steve Wozniak — Apple Mac Martini: Smirnoff apple, apple pucker
  • Ty Murray — Rodeo Jewel Martini: Crown Royal, Chambord, sweet & sour and Sprite

FYI, there’s also an American Idol specialty cocktail list.

Dear Caroline on Crack: A Classy Birthday With Flip Cup Potential on the Westside?

Dear Caroline on Crack,

A friend of mine is looking to have her 30th birthday somewhere on the Westside on a Saturday night that has good beer or at least good drinks, an outdoor area where people can be loud, yet is still kind of classy. The new Home in Silver Lake is a great example of what she’s looking for, but it’s pretty far away for a mostly Westside crowd.

Father’s Office would be awesome but it’s just not good for large parties with 20ish (max 30) people because of the whole waiting-in-line-regardless-of-who’s-inside thing. I guess it doesn’t HAVE to have an outdoor area, but… it would be ideal. I know she really wants to be able to play flip cup but has pretty much accepted that that’s near impossible. Any ideas? Thanks a lot — love your blog!

Thanks,

Flip Cup Contestant #2

Top 10 Spirits on My Booze Wishlist

Something’s happening to me. I’m discovering other types of booze besides bourbon that I now want to add to my bar. Tequila, rum and even flavored vodka. Look at me, I’m growing.

Vegas Trip, Part II: Nightlife With Cher and the Pussycat Dolls

Before this trip, this was my idea of nightlife in Vegas: packed meat market bars, bad drinks, and drunk men trying to rub their junk on even drunker girls. Fortunately this hosted vacay courtesy of Caesars Palace showed me another side to those sparkly lights that I’ve only seen in movies and the pages of Us Weekly.

Cher at the Colosseum
After our dinner at Rao’s we rushed over to the Colosseum to catch Cher. It was all so surreal and yet so Vegas, made all the more perfect with the promise of Bob Mackey costumes. Most of the giddy audience was already seated when we arrived. The venue looked sold out. Luckily for us, our seats were in front orchestra 4 putting us a mere 12 (?) rows away from the lady herself. Tickets in this section normally cost $227.27!

Apparently you can do a dinner and show package which can be a deal if you choose wisely. For instance, you can do the higher priced show ticket ($190) and dinner at the Bradley Ogden lounge ($40) where you can enjoy the best burger ever and only pay a bit more than if you just bought a ticket to the show. Believe me, that house-ground steak burger is awesome.

Who’s the Best? Tequila Launch Party & Cocktail Contest at Malo

Who says there are no good female mixologists in Los Angeles? Because there were plenty of them at the Gran Centenario Rosangel launch party and competition Wednesday night at Silver Lake’s Malo.

In the Mexican restaurant’s gorgeous new upstairs space, cocktail enthusiasts and industry-folk gathered to partake of the delicious free food as well as the complimentary creative cocktails concocted by L.A.’s finest women mixologists, i.e. Natalie Bovis-Nelsen of The Liquid Muse and Liquid Chef Kim Haasarud to name a few. This was all to launch the newish hibiscus-infused tequila, Gran Centenario Rosangel.

And if guests were still thirsty, there was a cocktail competition where enthusiasts and pros alike competed for the judges’ favor as well as the people’s choice. Marcos Tello of The Edison even got in the spirit of the night by dressing in drag, a fringy little number to be specific.

Although revelers crowded around the main bar area to get to the featured bartender which changed every hour, there was also a dj in an adjacent room to inspire impromptu robot danceoffs and a food room where hungry guests made like greedy goldfish and lunged after freshly put down dishes of tortas and tacos.

Malo’s new upstairs space holds about 150 but the evening’s strict guest list had about 200 on it. Fortunately, folks came and went so it never got too out of hand. On a side note, if you hadn’t already heard, Malo plans to open a downtown location next year on 7th Street near Grand Avenue.

By the end of the night, the winners of the contest were announced.

Judges’ choice was Matty Eggleston of The Hungry Cat and The Varnish for his comforting cocktail which would make a lovely night cap. Despite the use of Nutella it’s not too sweet and the orange zest and grated cinnamon give it the kick it needs.

The Lullaby

  • 4 oz Gran Centenario Rosangel Tequila
  • 3 tbs Nutella
  • 1/2 cup whole milk

In a frothing tin, steam 1/2 cup whole milk and Nutella. Steam until warm and agitate with bar spoon. Add the tequila and steam a moment more. Pour into four tea cups or larger espresso cups. Garnish with a light dusting of freshly grated cinnamon and orange zest.

Although this one felt like it took FOREVER to make, it was worth it. Apparently warm cocktails are a new trend in NYC.

Silamith mixing it up

People’s Choice winner was Silamith Weir, cocktail enthusiast and LA brand ambassador for Martin Miller’s Gin. Her Casa Blanco cocktail was a crowd favorite for its exotic ingredients. Mmm, pineapple and condensed milk.

Casa Blanco

  • 2 oz Gran Centenario Rosangel
  • 1/2 oz Matusalem Gran Reserva
  • 3-4 pineapple chunks
  • 4 basil leaves (shredded)
  • 1/2 oz sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup

Muddle pineapple and basil together. Add all other ingredients and shake vigorously. Strain and double strain into a cocktail glass.

These were my two absolute favorites of the five competing cocktails so I was really happy they one. Not only were they uber yummy, showcasing the flavor of the tequila nicely but they were so simple and yet innovative.

The other cocktails for your perusal after the jump.
