What a weird weekend.

Michael Jackson’s HiStyle at the Grammy Museum
On the heels of MJ’s “auction” is this exhibit where you can visit the pop icon’s heavily bejeweled costumes that he wore throughout his career. And that includes his trademark crystal-studded glove. For the price of admission, you can also peruse the other exhibits of the museum. Tickets are usually $14.95 but you can get them for $12 ($8 with $4 processing fee) on Goldstar.

  • Saturday-Sunday. 800 W Olympic Boulevard, Downtown (map).

Saturday, May 2

Red Mango Freebie Flavor Preview: Tangomonium
Fro-yo shop, Red Mango, is debuting its newest flavor by giving out free samples with one free topping. The new flavor with the weird name is described to taste like “fruit and citrus, and…light and refreshing” meant to evoke “memories of spring and summers past.”

  • 12-4pm. Various Red Mango locations.

Derby Day at South
This Santa Monica sports bar is hosting a special brunch with race day drink menu just for Derby Day, “the fastest 2 minutes in sports.” Dress to the nines and get a chance to win prizes for the most dapper dude and the gal with the best derby hat. Think Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. If you pick the trifecta you’ll get $15 off your bar tab.

  • 2pm. South Santa Monica, 3001 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica (map). (310) 828-9988.

Sunday, May 3

Bonus that Little Dom’s will provide the perfect accompaniment of Italian food.

Cocktail Review: Diva at Copa d’Oro

Last night I stopped off at Copa d’Oro for happy hour as usual but this time head bar dude Vincenzo Marianella had a special surprise for me. He had just gotten a bottle of Mozart dark chocolate liqueur! And this was months after I first fell in love with the idea of the chocolate Manhattan that was the Diva cocktail on Copa’s brand-new menu. Apparently this liqueur is a bitch to get a hold of so I had to wait it out and even content myself with a Diva made with Marie Brizard Cacao instead. Not bad, but I imagined not the same.

But now he had the real stuff and proceeded to make me one with the disclaimer that he actually thinks there was a misprint in the menu where it’s supposed to be Campari, not Sweet Vermouth listed in the ingredients. Regardless he ended up making me a variation with:

  • 2 oz Sazerac Rye
  • 1/2 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 1/3 oz Mozart Dark Chocolate liqueur
  • A dash of orange bitters
  • 2 dashes of rhubarb bitters

Needless to say, I loved it. The chocolate flavor was very subtle only showing up in the finish but it was so tasty. However, my happy hour companion, John of Social Domain, said that the cocktail was missing depth. Then Vincenzo gave me a taste of Diva made with Campari and that obviously had kick. “It’s more of an aperitif,” he explained.

In any case, I’ll be back for more. That’s my bottle of Mozart and you can’t have any! I kid. Sorta.

Ammo’s Small-Batch Social: Tequila Ocho

Last week, Hollywood neighborhood eatery Ammo kicked off its new tasting series amid a revelry of bloggers and cocktailers. Small-Batch Social is meant to bring together booze fans and industry experts while showcasing small-production spirits, wine and beer.

And for the debut event last Thursday, Tequila Ocho, from Jalisco, Mexico, was in the spotlight with oh-so-handsome brand ambassador Scott Haro doing the pouring and the explaining of Tequila Ocho’s 2008 Plato, Reposado and Anejo tequilas. Bonus was that each sample was accompanied by a tasty sangrita to complement the flavors of the tequila.

  • Plata: “a sweetly floral nose with extra ripe agaves and candied fruit presenting themselves.” Sangrita: cucumber mint with lemon
  • Reposado: “soft, ripe agave followed by balanced fruit and acidity that delivers an incredibly smooth taste.” Sangrita: tangerine with lime, jalapeno and cilantro
  • Anejo: “thick and smooth…finishes with coffee and cacao accents.” Sangrita: Tomato with chile de arbol, toasted coriander, rosemary and lime

We liked the Plata the best for its smoothness and drinkability while the tangerine sangrita made us long for it in a bigger glass. The delicious appetizers — steak on a rosemary spear, kanpachi crudo on a spoon and oven-roasted chicken with mint, cilantro and ginger on a bed of lettuce — kept the attendees sated between tastings. We just wished that they put out two more plates of that steak with rosemary. So tender and juicy.

The intimate group of tequila tasters crowded in the smallish bar area of the restaurant, making us wonder how they’d do this if more people showed up. Not a stretch considering all the coverage the event got from Daily Candy, Tasting Table and LA TimesDaily Dish blog just last week.

Fortunately it never got out of hand and we socialized, compared notes and, naturally, enjoyed the tequila.

No confirmation yet on what will be the focus of next month’s social (there’s talk of a vodka tasting) but it’ll still be in the affordable $20 range.

By the way, you can get a taste of Tequila Ocho in Ammo’s newest cocktail on the menu, Tequila Ocho Margarita which is Tequila Ocho Plata, agave nectar and lime (salt only if you request it).

Velvet Interactive Playground at Aura Nightclub

Club VIP Flyer.jpg

Lots of pretty lights, progressive music, a massive dance floor and drink specials will ignite a new monthly event at Aura Nightclub in Studio City on May 14. Yah, I said in Studio City. As you know I’m not big into nightclubs or the Valley for that matter but when it involves words “Velvet Interactive Playground” that’s enough to get me off my Westside ass. Especially when there are interactive art installations by Eric Gradman of Mindshare Labs.

Mindshare Labs have their own sold-out events that take place on the third Thursday every month downtown so this is going to be an awesome opportunity to check out their illuminated innovations while grooving? boogeying? electric sliding?….how do you dance to trance, techno and house anyway?

From Citysearch about Aura:

The main lounge area boasts an 18-wheeler-sized bar with mirrored shelves and a DJ tower, and cushy red-velvet booths with table service.

There’s a full bar with drink specials in the first hour (9-10pm) so it’s best to get there early. Speaking of early, early bird tickets purchased for the event before May 1 are $25. BUT if you purchase them and enter the code “carolineoncrack” you get a $10 discount, making them only $15! Early bird tickets are limited so better snap them up asap. Fancy folk may be interested in the tickets for dance floor booths ($90) and private VIP booths ($240). (Prices don’t include the processing fees which range from 99 cents to $6.)

Hope to see you there!

EVENT: THURSDAY, MAY 14 from 9pm to 2am

U*tique Shop: Instamatic Luxury in Fred Segal Santa Monica

Automated luxury store, U*tique, just opened up its first location ever in Fred Segal Santa Monica. It’s lux-o-matic, interactive, insta-matic…just don’t call it a vending machine. Although that’s basically what this fancy-schmancy machine does. Except instead of dispensing cheesy puffs, it sells 50 upscale beauty items, indulgences and lifestyle products like Aira mink eyelashes, Bliss triple oxygen mask, David Kirsch Wellness detox kit, GoSmile smile brightening system and ModelCo Tan in a Can to name just a few.

It’s no wonder 29-year-old CEO and Creator Mara Segal, who hails from San Francisco, thought Los Angeles would be a better starting market for her product. She hopes to one day make this machine available in airports and hotels for fabulous jet-setters as well as gyms. But for right now, you can check it out at Fred Segal Santa Monica.

There aren’t any pushy salespeople to deal with but you may have to wait in a line while customers try to figure out how to navigate the screens to find product recommendations, ingredients lists and free samples (you have to swipe your credit card and register an email address).

If you want to buy something it’s sorta like online shopping but you get your product right there. You pick something via the touchscreen, put it in a virtual bag, swipe your credit card and enter personal information and then the little black door beneath the screen slides up and reveals your product.

Like I said, the only downside is that you’d probably have to wait for people to slowwwly make their purchase, from shopping for their product to actually buying it. But otherwise a neat idea and great if you want to just pick up something without the hassle of salespeople.

Oh, also they only sell luxury items. A $109 shaving set and the like. I had asked why the prices aren’t displayed with the items, you know like in vending machines, and was told that if I had to ask how much something cost then I probably shouldn’t be buying something from that machine. Not said in a snobby way but matter of factly. M’OK.
