Valentine Cocktails: Love Potions & Jello Shots

Love is in the air, suddenly hearts and roses seem to populate the world and the movie theaters are showing nothing but romantic comedies. It’s enough to drive anyone to drink, singles and couples alike. Fortunately, there are bars in L.A. that feel ya and have created many Valentine cocktails that you can either toast your love with or use to drink this red-and-pink day away.

Pablo Moix of STK, that “sexy steakhouse” in West Hollywood, steered clear of the usual chocolate martini fare and instead created tequila-based cocktails that can be shared by lovers, proudly ordered by dudes and enjoyed by the single ladies. The cocktails ($14 each) are just specials for Valentine’s Day but ::whispering:: you may still be able to order it from Pablo in the days after, too.

  • Love Potion #1: Fresh strawberries, Grand Centenario Rosangel Tequila, aperol, lemon juice, champagne, and garnished with a rose petal and strawberry. Share this cocktail with your luv-uh. It’s the liquid form of feeding each other strawberries and champagne. Delicious!
  • Cupid’s Arrow: Basil, red grapes, Grand Centenario Rosangel tequila, Lillet Rouge, lime juice, ginger ale and garnished with a rose petal. Regardless of the rose petal garnish, this drink is probably the most unisex of the trio. It tastes like a red wine cocktail. Very savory with that basil and blends perfectly with the Lillet Rouge.
  • Kiss de Coco: Grand Centenario Rosangel Tequila, organic pomegranate syrup, lemon juice and garnished with a rose petal. This is actually a shot that’s only available in STK’s super-sexy Coco de Ville lounge. It’s sweeter than the other two if you want to sip it but a scrumptious love injection of flavor if you just want to knock it back.

Where to find that uber-sweet chocolate martini or fishbowls of love potion?

Cocktail Review: Ivan Kane’s Cafe Wa s New Cocktail Menu

Wa Sazerac

When I first checked out Ivan Kane’s Café Wa s in Hollywood last year, I couldn’t help but think that the only thing missing from this beautiful Bohemian restaurant was a specialty cocktail list. Amazingly it didn’t have one. Sure it has a full bar, an upstairs absinthe bar and a couple of absinthe cocktails but no list of special drinks to speak of.

And then just like that…well, months later my wish came true. The café has just debuted a list of cocktails inspired by vintage recipes as well as a twist on the standards. Perfect to enjoy in this absinthe-dreamlike setting.

Even though Ivan is a single-barrel Jack-on-the-rocks kind of guy, he swears that he still enjoys these cocktails which serve as an ode to his restaurant and complement its spirit of fun. The champagne-St. Germaine cocktail, Champagne Suzy ($13), is named after Ivan Kane’s wife. Lucid Stairway to Nowhere ($15) — a mix of champagne and Lucid absinthe — is of course inspired by that staircase near the bar that leads up to, not a door, but a mirror. There are also the standards like Manhattans (yay!), margaritas, and dirty martinis.

  • Deep Sazerac ($12): Lucid absinthe, rye, sugar cubes, Angostura bitters over ice and cherries. I LOVE Sazeracs even though I’m not crazy about absinthe, the absinthe wash is just enough to add a nice warmth to the rye. But the café’s Sazerac tasted like it had an actual dose of absinthe in it which overpowered the rye. Fortunately, I was able to send it back and my next cocktail, with less of the green stuff, was much much better.
  • Bukowski’s Night Cap ($12): VS Cognac, Chambord and milk over ice. Ivan is a big Bukowski fan and this cocktail is best enjoyed in the Bukowski lounge just past the stairway to nowhere. Read passages from the pages of Women papering the lounge walls while nursing one of these. I only wish that it had a bit more cognac in it though. As it was, I tasted the milk more than anything and a hint of the Chambord. I recently had the Milk Punch at Joe’s Restaurant in Venice, a breakfast cocktail strong on the bourbon, and this night cap reminded me of it, ‘cept without as much liquor. I wonder how this would taste if it was raspberry preserves instead of Chambord shaken in here. Hmm. BTW I already put in my request for them to serve this at their infamous bottomless brunches on the weekend.
  • Kane Old Fashioned ($13): Four Roses bourbon, sugar cube, bitters, and club soda and cherry, orange and a lemon twist. If you want a bourbon drink but favor something lighter than the Manhattan, this is the cocktail to get. The oranges and sugar take the edge off the bourbon.

FYI, the café also offers a flask service, think economical bottle service. The 375ml flask of your chosen booze — Dewar’s White Label ($70), Tanqueray ($72), or Wild Turkey 101 ($65) to name a few — arrives in a brown paper bag. Glasses are optional if you’d rather trade swigs with buddies. Mixers are unlimited and fruit is included!

The Fig: Santa Monica’s So Fresh & So Yum Restaurant

Fig Mojito

Rosemary & Rhubarb, Blueberry & Thyme, Lavender & Cucumber. Nope, I’m not talking about yummy-scented bath soaps or what I’m currently growing in my garden. H’yeah! Like I know how to garden. These are actually the sorts of cocktails new Santa Monica restaurant, the Fig, is crafting behind its bar. Located inside the fancy (it’s not the last time you’ll see that word in this review) Fairmont Miramar Hotel, the Fig strives to offer not only a relaxed dining experience with a neighborhoodie feel but an enticingly fresh menu. Its cocktail menu and food menu are both built around whatever is in peak season, guaranteeing the freshest ingredients.

Unfortunately, since the dinner prices for the entrees range from $17 to $36, I could never hope to include this on my roster of go-to restaurants. And even though its beautiful setting is meant to give off a casual bistro vibe, by the time you walk through that grand entrance off Wilshire and pass under that gorgeous 130-year-old fig tree out front and glide through the hushed hotel lobby, you’ll probably feel bad for even daring to show up in jeans and Chucks.

Shareen Vintage: Thrift Store Gems for the Lazy Shopper

Photo from Shareen Vintage

Photo from Shareen Vintage (detail)

Shareen Vintage in Venice is for those who hate the hunt of discounted gems in thrift stores.

When I was in my 20s I loved shopping in thrift stores as much as the next girl with unique taste. But now that I’m older, that musty store smell, the silty feel of used clothes and the chaos of the clothing rack just don’t appeal to me as much.

So I was delighted when my roommate Crystal took me to Shareen Vintage, a vintage clothing store that picks the gems for you and sells them at reasonable prices.

The store sits behind clothing store Ecookie on Abbot Kinney and you have to take the side alley to get to it. The way is simply marked by orange tulle petticoats pinned to the fence. There usually is a clothing rack of colorful costumelike dresses marking the alley but no sign.

And once on that back patio, if Crystal wasn’t there, I probably would have turned around and left. As, even though there was another petticoat hanging over the entrance, the closed unmarked door made me doubt the store’s existence. But Crystal knocked and we walked into a room that looked like a dream closet.

At first I worried that the small room was all there was to it, but then further in there was another room and attached to that yet another. In the main room on the coffee table were all kinds of treats laid out alongside tiny bottles of Arrowhead water. If I hadn’t just eaten at Joe’s up the street, I probably would have grabbed a couple of Red Vines. Two ladies rummaging through the bowl of Skittles were pontificating about how all the good flavors are usually the first to go.

As for me, I went straight to the racks, scanning for anything that aroused my interest. Sure enough, I didn’t really see anything over $100. Nice! Immediately I found an elegant knee-length ’80s number with a flare skirt and tie back for only $30. It could almost pass for a ’40s dress if it wasn’t so clingy. I wanted to try it on but there aren’t any dressing rooms here.

Fortunately as this is a girls’ only establishment, no boys allowed, women are free to undress where they stand, sample-sale style. The saleswoman in the front room makes sure to turn all men away from the door. So don’t bother bringing your boyfriends along. They can just sit on the comfy patio furniture outside.

The store felt busy even though there were just five shoppers at the moment. It’s a small, hidden place and the saleswoman guessed that that was because most vintage lovers like to keep this place a secret. I guess now the secret is out.

BTW, apparently there is also a downtown location.

UPDATE: Venice store is closed but downtown location is still open.
