Pea Soup Andersen’s: Childhood Wish Fulfilled, Twas OK

Mmm, pea soup
It’s always been a childhood dream of mine to stop off at Pea Soup Andersen’s in Santa Nella off Highway 5 near Gustine. It’s just that when I was a kid we would always go on these road trips and would invariably pass that huge windmill, never stopping of course. My parents only stopped to gas up or go to the bathroom. It wasn’t about the journey, it was all about the destination.

But this time, on the drive back from my trip up north, we stopped! Actually it was my bf’s idea since I’m still of the “let’s just get home already” mind set. I squealed with delight when we rolled up to the windmill.

However, I didn’t stand outside long enough to admire it. Just ran into the building to see what’s what. Inside, we found a coffee shop, a Danish bakery, a gift shop and a dining room. Why two different rooms to eat? I dunno considering that they both seemed to serve the same menu, which surprisingly had reasonable prices, not jacked-up tourist prices.

Have Yourself a Cheapie New Year’s: NYE Parties for $30 and Under

Merry Christmas! OK, now on to the next holiday. In these trying times, you’re probably still leery of dropping serious dough just to ring in the New Year. Well have I got some options for you — awesome shindigs for cheap!

South – Free
South in Santa Monica is doing it up N’Awlins style with a free Hurricane toast at 10pm to ring in the New Year with Bourbon Street. At midnight, there’s another toast, this one with free champagne. And if you want to buy bottles for you and your friends, South’s got the cheapest bubbly around for $40 a bottle all night. There are also bottles for $100 or $250 and from 8 to 10pm $125 for a bottle of Jett Energy Vodka. Raffle tickets are sold at the door and the winner will get a $20 bar tab every week for all of 2009.

The Abbey – Free for general/$125 open bar
Feel bad that L.A. doesn’t have its own ball drop to compete with New York City’s? Well, the Abbey in WeHo is dropping its own at midnight! There’s no cover to get into what’s sure to be a hoppin’ partay but if you want access to an open bar, appetizers and party favors that’ll be $125.

Bigfoot Lodge – $5 before 10pm, $10 before 11pm, $20 after 11pm
Say good-bye to the old year by grabbing a faux-warm seat next to Bigfoot’s faux fireplace. I love their flaming Toasted Marshmallow cocktail but for NYE drink specials include the $5 Sugar Plum Fairy shots. And at midnight, enjoy a free champagne toast. Get your groove on to the dj stylings of resident mixmaster DJ Lee.

Mountain Bar - $20 Presale, $30 door
It’s an artsy-fartsy new year at this Chinatown bar. Brought to you by the folks at ArtShowLA, this shindig gets you party favors and a champagne toast for only $20. No ball drop here but there will be a balloon drop and a slew of djs — DJs J-Heart, Randy Watson, Matt Respect + Laroj.

X Bar – $20 door
Considering this is a fancy-schmancy Century City hotel bar, $20 to count down here is quite the deal. Not to mention that you get free party favors and a champagne toast and can watch the ball drop on a 10-foot screen and nine large indoor plasma TVs. Dance to DJ Raymond Dominguez’s spun tunes indoors or under the stars on the patio.

Blue Velvet – $25
Count down poolside while knocking back comp’d Hennessey cocktails. Yep, free booze that’s not champagne! DJs Rashida and EQue provide the tunes. RSVP to honeycollective [at] yahoo.com.

Club 740 – $25
If you want your 2008 to go out with a bang, how’s about a three-story masquerade ball with glass walls, global dance music and laser lights? Here you get a massive balloon drop, appetizers and a champagne toast for only $25. And if you live in downtown, you get a $5 discount, just call ahead.

Standard Hollywood – $25 presale/$35 door
Make your reservations now to secure your spot at the scene-y Standard Hollywood. DJ Dirty Dave, Valida, C-Town and Cosmic Kids will warm up the festivities with pre-party spinning in the lobby from 6 to 9pm, and someone named Le Le will be performing during the party.

J Lounge – $30
With fire dancers, four bars, a 10,000-square-foot patio and even snow, you get a heck of a lot of shazam for your 30 bucks at this downtown nightclub’s celebration. Boogie on down to djs on the dance floor and on the patio.

Life on Wilshire – $30 general/$75 open bar
Sure, it’s $30 to get into this Mid-Wilshire club and celebrate NYE, but for $45 more (about the price of four cocktails here) you get an open bar all night long! Enjoy djs and dancing and a midnight champagne toast. Call Mike at (323) 651-5433 or lifeonwilshire [at] att.net for tickets.

Teavana: I Have a New Drug – Tea

Teavana

That’s it. I’m done with coffee. I’m now heavily addicted to tea thanks to Teavana, an awesome tea shop usually found in malls. I was strolling around the Galleria in Roseville (near Sacramento) when I happened upon this tea store. Currently on the hunt for mint green tea, I figured I’d find what I wanted there.

As soon as I walked in, I was overwhelmed by all things tea and tea related. There were tea cups, tea canisters, tea diffusers, tea sets and of course a bunch of tea as well as a couple of tea dispensers where you could try some samples.

Unfortunately there aren’t any menus on display for you to peruse the extensive selection so I just stood in line and waited until a tea clerk became available.

Holiday Cocktails Roundup: Eggnog Martini, Spiked Apple Cider and Gingerbread Manhattan

Looking for a little holiday cheer in the frantic last days of frenzied mall crowds, last-minute shopping and party hopping? Well, today is your lucky day. Christmas in a cocktail glass at the following bars and even a little recipe to try at your holiday party!

I love Bar Lubitsch’s Hot Winter Cider. This hot mug of cidery goodness with organic apple juice, Jack and Hennessey never fails to warm me up. And I love wrapping my hand around the pretty Russian-esque glass mug it comes in. Feels like I’m staying in from a blustery white night.

Westwood’s BLVD 16 has comfort winter cocktails. For those who miss pumpkin pie, there’s the Great Pumpkin ($14) cocktail with Captain Morgan Rum, Frangelico, Licor 43, Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur and pumpkin pie mix served on the rocks in a martini glass with a Graham Cracker crusted rim. The Apple Jack ($12) is another spiked hot apple cider with Jack Daniels and cinnamon simple syrup served in a spiced rimmed glass. If perchance you have a cold, the Chamomile Hot Toddy ($12) will have you feeling right as rain (what does that mean anyway) with its chamomile-mango tea, Tuacca and brandy with honey and a cinnamon stick.

New downtown Mexican restaurant, Casa Cocina y Cantina, has every favorite Christmas flavor in a one glass and it’s called Feliz Navinog — chocolate, mint, Bacardi rum and eggnog with crushed candy cane dusting the rim. I know, I’m skeptical myself but I heard it’s actually “crazy delicious.”

Photo courtesy of Citrus at SocialCitrus at Social is showcasing a cocktail flight ($12) just for the occasion — a trio of holiday faves. Egg Nog is made with Vanilla Stoli, brandy, Buttershots, cream, vanilla bean simple syrup, nutmeg, garnished with graham cracker crumble. The Apple Cider is a different take on the winter drink, with Vanilla Stoli, Goldschlager, simple syrup, apple liqueur, cream and garnished with an apple slice. And the Candy Cane is a creamy minty mix of Vanilla Stoli, crème de menthe, simple syrup, cream, dash of cherry liqueur and garnished with a mini candy cane. You also have the option of ordering single large versions of each drink for $13.

I love Luna Park on La Brea, especially for the fact that they have the cutest Xmas-themed cocktails ($9.50 each) I’ve seen this year. The Bumble is a creamy, sweet concoction of vanilla vodka, Godiva white chocolate liqueur and Frangelico named after the redlight-phobic abominable snowman in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. And of course there’s a cocktail inspired by everyone’s favorite Red Nosed Reindeer. This one is made with Captain Morgan, Grand Marnier, Grey Goose and a bit of eggnog, served on the rocks and garnished with cherries and a cinnamon stick. The Mistletoe Martini is surprisingly tropical with melon liqueur, coconut rum, pineapple and sweet and sour, the holiday touch is its “mistletoe” garnish.

The Peninsula’s Club Bar in Beverly Hills is featuring a decadent Eggnog Martini. This one mixes eggnog with Amaretto di Sarono and Belvedere vodka and is garnished with cinammon sticks.

The Wildfish Seafood Grille all the way in Newport Beach is in the throes of its 12 Cocktails of Christmas where they’re pouring premium holiday cocktails ($11 each) every night til December 31. Check out the following drinks: Peppermint Patty, Toasted Almond, Caramel Apple, Pumpkin Pie and Gingerbread Man.

If you don’t feel like making your own mulled wine this year, Wilshire in Santa Monica is serving it up, made with Cabernet, sugar, vanilla bean, cloves, black pepper, oranges, lemons, and brandy ($10) to keep you warm up on those cold nights.

And while I was flying Southwest to Sacto, I found a yummy-sounding Christmas take on my favorite cocktail, the Manhattan, in the airline’s magazine. This uses gingerbread liqueur in the place of Sweet Vermouth! Unfortunately, I didn’t get to copy the recipe down but if I remember correctly, it’s the following (although they did say to shake which is a no-no in my book). If not, adapt to taste.

Gingerbread Manhattan

  • 3 oz. Maker’s Mark
  • 1 oz. gingerbread liqueur

Combine ingredients over ice, stir and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a spear of candied ginger and brandied cherry.

Preggatinis: Cocktail Recipe Book for Pregnant Women (and Designated Drivers)

Cocktail photo by Claire Barrett

Why should drinkers have all the fun this holiday season? And poor designated drivers, sitting there with their sad little sodas and chewed-on straws. Fortunately this month, Natalie Bovis-Nelsen (aka the Liquid Muse) — L.A. cocktail blogger extraordinaire and a certified mixologist — has come out with her first cocktail book for — wait for it — pregnant women. But the thing is if you’re not expecting, Preggatinis: Mixology for the Mom-To-Be ($16.95) with its 75 virgin cocktails is actually also a great recipe book when you want to whip up something for non-drinkers and designated drivers at your holiday parties. Hey, they should have something fun to drink, too.

For instance, Natalie’s Sparkling Pomegranate Snowflake drink served in a champagne flute would be a perfect addition to that champagne toast on New Year’s, not to mention the envy of champagne drinkers.

Sparkling Pomegranate Snowflake*

Fre® Brut alcohol-removed sparkling wine
1 teaspoon pomegranate seeds
Dash Stirrings blood orange bitters (optional)
1 ounce pomegranate juice
1/2 ounce lemon juice
1 sugar cube

Rim champagne flute with sugar. Place 1 sugar cube into the bottom of a cocktail flute. Douse with bitters. Add pomegranate juice, lemon juice and top with alcohol-removed sparkling wine. Drop in pomegranate seeds.

What’s great about these recipes is that they even come with a de-virginize option so that everyone can enjoy the same cocktail — boozers and nondrinkers alike.

White Hot Mama (Heat Resistant Glass)*

1/2 teaspoon ground dried ancho chili powder
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
2 tablespoons white hot chocolate cocoa powder
1 teaspoon honey
1 cup whole milk
2 tablespoons caramel sauce

Drizzle caramel sauce around the inside of a heat resistant mug, particularly around the inside of the rim. Mix the remaining ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a vigorous simmer, over medium heat. Then, reduce the heat and continue to simmer for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Let the mixture cool to slightly above room temperature and gently pour into the heat-resistant glass.

De-Virginize for Dad: White Hot Mama: Add 1 ounce of brandy and 1 ounce of white chocolate liqueur into the glass before adding the hot milk mixture.

Pregnant cocktail lovers longing for the day when they can drink again will love this book which also is organized by pregnancy stages and symptoms and includes sidebars about pregnancy and health. And even if you’re not in the family way, it’s a great resource to keep handy at your home bar.

Hopefully one day soon nonalcoholic cocktails will be available in bars everywhere.

Preggatinis, listed as one of the best cocktail books for 2008 by About.com, is available at Bar Keeper in Silver Lake or you can order it from Amazon.com.

Osteria Mozza: My Favorite Restaurant, Minus the Quail

Gnocchi with duck ragu

People always ask me what my favorite restaurant is. And while I can offer up a selection of those I’m fond of, I never really had a favorite before — that one answer that’s at the ready for any dinner-related question, the one that I utter with glee every time. That is until I had dinner at Osteria Mozza.

Yes, I was soo late to the game on this one, but I usually shy away from places like this. You know, The Hottest Restaurant, The It Spot, Celeb Central. And people were selling their reservations! Wuuut? But finally when my housemate persuaded me to go with her one night, I did and instantly fell in love with the newer Mozza. So naturally I picked it as the spot to celebrate mine and my bf’s anniversary (is that worded correctly?).

Since he loves to eat and enjoys good food as much as I do, I knew he’d appreciate the restaurant, too. So I secured a reservation a month in advance with no hassle.
