This Weekend: Free Cupcakes Again, Red Line Pub Crawl and Jimmy Choo Xmas Tree

Happy Thanksgiving, crackheads! Most of you are probably out of town anyway but for those who stayed I worked really hard finding some things for you to do. BTW, if you came here looking for Black Friday ideas I’ve got none since I’m not doing Christmas this year but fortunately Rundown has got a list of Black Friday specials.

Friday, November 28

Free Crumbs Cupcakes at Glendale Store Grand Opening
If you still find yourself inexplicably hungry after Thanksgiving, you’ll be delighted to know that the new Crumbs location at The Americana at the Brand in Glendale will be giving away 1,000 cupcakes in celebration of its grand opening. Don’t get too excited though, it’s only one freebie per person.

  • 9am. Crumbs Americana, Americana at Brand, 889 Americana Way, Glendale (map). (818) 637-8982.

Red Line Pub Crawl from Union Station to Cahuenga Corridor
L.A. Tribe.net folks are having a pub crawl to take advantage of the Red Line’s new 3am end time on weekends (only til the end of the year). The starting point will be Traxx at Union Station  where pub crawlers will knock back cocktails til 9pm and then hop on the metro heading to Hollywood’s Cahuenga Corridor — Tiny’s KO, Velvet Margarita Cantina, Burgundy Room. Awesome since you don’t have to worry about looking for parking or driving home drunk. Remember to purchase a $5 all day pass beforehand, though, and if you want to keep it cheap, bring your own flask.

  • 8pm. Starting point: Traxx at Union Station, 800 N Alameda Street, Downtown (map).(213) 625-2999.

Neon Noise Dance Party at Medusa Lounge
Feeling all flabby after stuffing your face on T-day? Work out on the dance floor. Indie 103.1′s “Neon Noise” host DJ Paul V will be providing his ultra groovy mashup of indie rock and electronic dance music for the gays and straights on Medusa Lounge’s spacious dance floor. This monthly dance party goes off every fourth Friday of the month. If you RSVP on Going.com, admission is free!

Hot Chocolate Bar and Jimmy Choo Holiday Tree at the Beverly Wilshire
Two swell things under one magnificent roof! The Blvd at the Beverly Wilshire has the most awesome-sounding holiday treat: a hot chocolate bar which features concoctions like the Melted Snowflake, the spicy Mamacita as well as BH-inspired Tiffany Blue and Valentino Red cocktails. And stop by the hotel’s lobby to admire the Jimmy Choo tree which is made of only beautiful JC accessories! Namely the colorful 2009 Cruise collection. The tree will be on display til NYE.

  • Beverly Wilshire, 9500 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills (map). (310) 275-5200.

Ghettogloss’ Silver Lake Art/Craft & Vintage Flea Market
This Eastside flea market sounds like a treasure trove of hip, eclectic finds. Produced by Ghettogloss (who also brings you the weekly gorilla-sexy Bronx Zoo), this bazaar features crafts, collectibles and even tarot readings. A portion of the proceeds will go toward the construction of Silver Lake’s new library.

  • 9am to 5pm. Every weekend through December 21. Citibank Parking Lot, 2450 Glendale Boulevard, Los Angeles (map). (323) 912-0008.

Bar Pintxo: Tapas With a Side of Envy

After the Great Los Angeles Walk and its Britannia Pub after party, H.C., Khoi and I still felt like partying it up, OK, I mean winding down, so we stopped off at Bar Pintxo (a Basque word that means “pinches” of food or snacks and is pronounced “pin-cho”) in Santa Monica to check it out.

I’ve been meaning to try out this Spanish wine and tapas bar ever since it opened last year around Christmas but every time I happened by it was packed, and that’s a small venue with only an occupancy of 30! But this time, on a Saturday early evening it was nice and quiet with only 10 or so people in there, including staff. I’m guessing this was due to it being before dinner time.

Even though there were plenty of seats near the back of the restaurant we chose to sit at the counter with our backs to the window so we wouldn’t be in the walk way and we could watch the cooks. OK, they only seemed to be cutting jamon more than actually cooking stuff but still a nice place to sit. We were also right next to the display case of delicious-looking tapas. Of course, this didn’t help our cause of coming here only for a glass of wine. Before we knew it we were ordering yet another glass of wine, tapas and dessert.

Thanksgiving Cocktails: Pumpkin Pie and Garlic Mashed Potato Martinis

Photo of Citrus at Social’s Apple Cider by Hazelnut Photography

Yes, alas Jones Soda isn’t doing its special turkey and gravy soda for Thanksgiving this year. But never fear, you’ll still be able to drink your mashed potatoes, and in a martini glass at that, or one of the following holiday specialty cocktails. BTW, not all places are open on Thanksgiving so call ahead if you’re really counting on that apres-dysfunctional-dinner drink.

For an organic take on the pumpkin pie martini, check out Culver City’s green eatery, Akasha. Sip this savory concoction of pumpkin spice vodka, TRU vanilla vodka and Silk pumpkin soy with a dash of nutmeg and a graham cracker and brown sugar rim. Or for something nontraditional, try the spicy Autumn Harvest cocktail ($13) made with Veev acai liqueur, Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur, housemade pear/apple juice with cardamom, nutmeg and clove.

If you’re through with pumpkin pie martinis, Citrus at Social in Hollywood is featuring a spiked apple cider ($13). Definitely not for kids, this baby is made with Stoli Vanilla, Goldschlager, apple liqueur, simple syrup and cream and garnished with a cinnamon stick. This cocktail is part of a holiday cocktail flight trio ($12 for apple cider, egg nog and candy cane martinis) but you can also order it solo.

Culver City’s Korean BBQ restaurant, Gyenari, is featuring a Smashed Pumpkin cocktail ($12). This dessert in a cocktail glass is made with rum and pumpkin pie filling mixed with sugar and spice. To make it extra special, it’s topped with a whipped cream float flavored with Grand Marnier, vanilla and sugar.

Hollywood’s own Hungry Cat has a very yummy seasonal Persimmon Margarita ($13). The only margarita that will go nicely with this crisp weather, it’s made with reposado tequila, persimmon juice and lime with a cinnamon salt rim. Or for the only whiskey-based holiday cocktail we’ve found (sniff, sniff), there’s the Granddaddy Maple ($13) with roasted ginger-infused whiskey, lemon, orange and pure maple syrup. Gobble, gobble indeed.

Ivan Kane’s Cafe Wa s in Hollywood is making sure you get a buzz from its spiked apple cider ($10.50). Here, you get not only rum but vanilla vodka with your apple juice. Try it with the pumpkin spice beignets.

Lola’s, the Fairfax martini bar that launched the apple martini, will fill your mashed potato cravings with its unique Garlic Mashed Potato Martini ($11). This hard-core cocktail is comprised of potato vodka and garnished with a garlic-stuffed olive. That’s it. Just remember to pop a breath mint before the world gets fuzzy. Lola’s also has its own pumpkin martini which is $11 regularly or $5 during the Hard Times Happy Hour Mondays through Sundays 5:30-7:30pm.

Another Culver City restaurant throws its own T-day cocktail into the mix. Rush Street celebrates fall flavors with its Spiced Apples & Pears cocktail featuring spiced pear vodka, apple juice, lemon and lime juice and a pinch of cinnamon for extra spice.

Or, as a special from The Edison‘s own Chris Ojeda, here’s a little hot toddy-ish recipe you can make to sedate your family after dinner. FYI The Edison will be closed all week til Friday.

In-Law House Rules Cocktail
(inspired by Ojeda’s in-laws):

  • 2.5 oz Applejack Bonded or Applejack
  • 3 oz of hot water
  • 1/2 oz mulling spiced syrup**
  • A slice of a baked cameo apple***
  • Lemon peel (expressed in the drink)
  • star anise
  • grated nutmeg

In toddy glass or mug place the baked apple slice in the bottom and slightly muddle to break up. Pour the applejack, mulling spiced syrup and water and stir. Add the star anise and grated nutmeg for garnish.

**Mulling spices syrup — make simple syrup (1:1 sugar and water) and let the spice steep like you would a tea over a low heat. Turn off heat and let them steep for 30 minutes and strain out. Mulling spices are available at most grocery stores or health food stores.
***Slice a cameo apple and bake for 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees.

Happy Turkey Day, folks, and be safe!

Great Los Angeles Walk: Loving L.A. Via My Two Feet

Who says no one walks in L.A.? Last Saturday, I did just that with about 150 other Angelenos for Franklin Avenue’s annual Great Los Angeles Walk. The L.A.-appreciative promenade originated at Union Station in downtown at 9am and continued over 18 miles to the ocean in Santa Monica with an after party at the Britannia Pub. And walkers kept track of one another through Twitter.

Eighteen miles was too ambitious for me since I’m no longer in marathon shape, so instead I parked my car in Santa Monica and took the Metro Rapid 704 to West Hollywood (only took about half an hour) where I caught up with H.C. and Khoi, a couple of Great Walkers at the head of the pack.

But I think I cheated myself out of a really interesting walk by joining for only the Westside vanilla-portion of the stroll. Yes, I live on the Westside. I missed out on Olvera Street, Echo Park and Hollywood. Lots of interesting stuff to take pictures of like graffiti, people, buildings and restaurants. Instead I had to get my jollies off misspelled signs, water fountains, weird Beverly Hills stores (there’s a store that actually blings things) and an army of valet.

One thing for sure, though, it was a great way to enjoy the city; to actually take a closer look at places that you only glimpse of briefly from a car window. H.C., Khoi and I took advantage of the freedom our feet afforded us and briefly went off the beaten path, stopping off at Crumbs, then Sprinkles and posed for pictures by the Beverly Hills sign and the BH water fountain at the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica.

This was my first time to actually enjoy L.A. like this so even though we walked at a pretty quick pace, we still made sure to appreciate our surroundings. I’ve passed that Beverly Hills fountain so many times after living here for 15 years and have never taken a picture of it til now.

And it was cool to just walk to places without having to worry about parking first. For instance Clementine’s in Century City is usually a bitch to finding parking near but this time we just walked in and got our refreshing ginger limeade.

I also learned to appreciate the Metro Rapid, which I’ve never experienced before. Even though I rode it briefly to get to my meeting point in the beginning, I liked how quick it was. It was fun to watch L.A. traffic from high up; people honking at each other and flipping each other off and I didn’t have to deal with them. HA ha! Just watched the news on the bus’ TV and checked out the neighborhoods as we whizzed by. I definitely want to use it for a bar hop in the near future.

This is the third year for the Great L.A. Walk and this year’s had the most miles (the route changes every year) as well as the most walkers yet. It was so much fun that I think I’ll do it again next year, except hopefully from the starting line. Since it always takes place the Saturday before Thanksgiving, I’d say it’s an awesome way to get geared up for the LBC Turkey Trot, which I’m doing this year, too. Yay.

BTW, congrats to all those who participated in the walk, including Siel (Green LA Girl) who joined us for the last mile. By the looks of things at the after party, everyone had a great time.

Sugar, Spice & Lots of Booze at Whist’s Pastry/Cocktail Class

Since I’m throwing a holiday treat exchange for me and my girlfriends, I thought attending the holiday pastry/cocktail class at Whist would be a great way to come up with some new ideas. For the class, we were told we’d learn how to make pate a choux, chocolate truffles and praline candy in addition to cinnamon-pomegranate sangria, eggnog and caramel apple cocktail.

However, as it turned out, I suspect it might have been rough for pastry chef Brooke Mosely to teach a roomful of 14 distracted students — high on sugar and tipsy from prosecco and cinnamon-pomegranate sangria.

We had started off the class with Prosecco Brut Mionetto and since I hadn’t even eaten dinner it was so hard to focus on anything. And although I wanted to suck down that yummy, full-bodied sangria I made sure to pace myself so that I would be able to at least learn something from this class.

The Great Los Angeles Walk 2008
Get out of your anti-social bubble (read: car) for once and enjoy your city via your feet. This annual event will take you through 18.3 “pedestrian-friendly” miles of L.A. from Union Station to Santa Monica. At the end of the line, walkers will celebrate at Britannia Pub off 3rd Street Promenade. The event is free but bring cash to pay for your halfway point lunch in WeHo and celebratory beer in SaMo.

  • 9am. Starting point: Union Station, 800 N. Alameda Street, Los Angeles (map). RSVP: franklin_avenue[at]yahoo[dot]com.

Bacharach Brunch at Ivan Kane’s Café Wa s
Enjoy a little Bacharach with your brunch. Burt’s classic tunes played on a piano go along perfectly with oeufs Benedicte ($12) and Croque Madame ($13), don’t ya think? I’ve heard the Daube de Boeuf Hash ($16) with fried eggs, pot roast and julienne potatoes is a great hangover cure. If you feel like spending the dough, for an extra $25 you can make it a bottomless Bacharach brunch with champagne, mimosas, screwdrivers or Bloody Marys.

  • Saturdays and Sundays. Ivan Kane’s Cafe Wa s, 1521 N. Vine Street, Hollywood (map). (323) 466-5400.

Free Cocktails at Vanity Room’s Grand Opening Party
Enjoy freebie apple martinis and pink cosmos (along with beer and wine) at the girliest grand opening ever. Harmonie Boutique in Venice is not only celebrating its 4th anniversary but the grand opening of its more affordable counterpart, Vanity Room, my fave party frocks store (I bought my sparkly GenLux dress here). There will also be a DJ and shoppers will get 15% off their entire purchase during the party.

  • 7-11pm. Vanity Room @ Harmonie Boutique, 2800 Abbott Kinney Boulevard, Venice (map). (310) 306-5059.

Valley of the Dolls Lolita Tea Party at Royal/T
Weirrrd! A tea party with dolls…for grown-ups! Cosplay tea house Royal/T in Culver City is hosting a special tea party for L.A. Lolitas and their dolls, even featuring a special high tea ($25) with settings for both lolitas AND their dolls. Don’t have your own doll? Never fret, there will be a Valley of the Dolls pop-up store so you can buy one. Even though dolls creep me out, some of these are pretty cool-looking. I want this one! There will also be an anime screening in the lounge, J-Pop/J-Rock music and a raffling off of eight dolls.

  • 12-5pm. Free admission. Royal/T, 8910 Washington Boulevard, Culver City (map). (310) 559-6300.

Dim Sum and Then Some Brunch at Equator

IMG_0147

When you think weekend brunch you probably imagine vanilla French toast, cheddar cheese and bacon scramble and a stack of blueberry pancakes. OK, I do. So I was intrigued when I heard about the “Dim Sum and Then Some” Brunch at Equator in Pasadena. You get to choose from a menu of dim sum created by Chef Zhang, who learned a thing or two about the cuisine from his mother. She has worked at acclaimed Monterey Park and Chinatown restaurants for years.

On Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 3pm, the Pasadena restaurant/lounge, presents this unusual brunch menu (each order is $3) of pan-fried pork dumplings (three pieces), shrimp siu mai (four pieces), char siu bao (two pieces) and sticky rice wrapped in a bamboo leaf, to name but a few.

I went here last Saturday to meet up with a friend and it was a fun thing to do, sharing dim sum with a gal pal on a lazy morning. Definitely a lot lighter than a traditional brunch. But I still managed to get stuffed after splitting an appetizer and four dim sum plates. I’m not a dim sum expert so I couldn’t tell you if it was better than Chinatown. However, I did enjoy the steamed BBQ pork buns. Wasn’t all that crazy about the sticky rice, mainly because of the steamed peanuts in it. Not my thing. And this wasn’t dim sum but I loved our app of spicy seared albacore topped with crispy onions ($8). That one, I didn’t really want to share.
