Bailout-Inspired Drinking: Soup Kitchen Happy Hour, Flask Service and $5 Cocktails

http://www.english.uiuc.edu/maps/depression/photoessay.htm
Feeling a little down in the dumps because of the state of the economy? A bit leery about spending money on going out? Here are some L.A. bars that feel ya, whether they have really cheap drinks or drinks that just look cheap.

35-Cent Specialty Drinks at the Edison
Every Friday (“til we all feel better”) as a special to get us through this financial crisis, my fave downtown bar will be selling Your 401K gin cocktail and The Bail Out bourbon cocktail for only 35 cents. You’ll nosh on free grilled cheese melts and tomato soup as well during this 5-7pm Soup Kitchen cocktail hour. And 25 percent of net proceeds will go to local food banks and charities.

  • Fridays 5-7pm. The Edison, 108 W 2nd Street, Downtown (map). (213) 613-0000.

$5 Martinis and $5.50 Appetizers at Lola’s
Well-known martini bar Lola’s in West Hollywood offers its hard times special every day from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Choose from a menu of several martini flavors and pay only five bucks for each one! There’s apple, raspberry, cosmo, dirty, dry, peach or grapefruit cocktails. And during the upcoming holiday season, look out for pumpkin, gingerbread and candy cane martinis. If you’re hungry, any of the appetizers off the regular menu are priced at only $5.50 each.

  • Every day 5:30-7:30pm. Lola’s, 945 N. Fairfax Avenue, West Hollywood (map). (323) 654-5652.

“Bottle Service” in a Brown Paper Bag at Ivan Kane’s Cafe W as
As an ode to these troubling times, this Hollywood bistro/piano lounge has made the usually expensive bottle service a bit cheaper for everyone. The flask service allows you and your pals to order a 375ml bottle of booze — from the $58 Bacardi Light to the $72 Tanqueray. Served in brown paper bags, you can choose to swig from the bottle and pass it around or have it in a glass like a civilized person and customize it with the unlimited mixers (juice, soda) and fruit.

Try Scoops’ New Flavors for Change
If you missed out on the Flavors for Change ice cream social on Tuesday, you can still try out the winning Obama-inspired flavors that were voted the best. There’s “Obaiden,” “Baracky Road,” “Blue Forever,” “Alternative Energy” and “Obama Victory” sorbet. As many of you know, there’s no such thing as a bad flavor at Scoops.

Friday, October 31

4th Annual L.A. International Tamale Festival
Let it be known that tamales make for a great hangover meal. So it’s perfect that the tamale fest starts on Halloween and extends through the weekend. It’s not all about eating, though. They’ve got a tamale cook-off, an altar making contest, lots of live musical performances…and a tamale eating contest. Burp!

  • Friday 3- 8pm,  Saturday 10am-9pm, Sunday 11am – 6pm. Free. 2230 West 6th Street, Los Angeles (map).  (213) 368-0520.

Haunted Hollywood Scavenger Hunt
A fun and unusual way to celebrate Halloween with some friends. Check out this special haunted Hollywood scavenger hunt that will take you through some of L.A.’s spookiest places like the Roosevelt and the Knickerbocker Hotel. No ghost hunting knowledge needed but you should have a knack for word problems. And bring a flashlight and comfortable shoes. You can form a team of up to six peeps and the winning teams will win prizes.

  • 5:30-8pm, $25. Meeting place TBD. Call (323) 799-1374 to register.

Saturday, November 1

Dia de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever Cemetery
One of the best and largest Day of the Dead celebrations out there what with 5,000 to 10,000 revelers anticipated. They’ll be celebrating this Mexican holiday with live music, handmade altars for ancestors, parades, and food. But don’t think this is one more chance to show off your Halloween costume. This isn’t the place for it. Instead, your finest skeleton/Calaca apparel is requested. Ceremonial altar setup takes place on Halloween.

  • 4-11pm. $5. Hollywood Forever Cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).

Fall 2008 Brewery ArtWalk
Peek into the lofts of over 100 resident artists at the Brewery. You’ll get a chance to chat up the artists while viewing their work and to purchase their unique creations at this biannual event. If you want to take a break between all that walking and soaking in of culture, grab some lunch, beers and cocktails at Barbara’s Bar and Restaurant. Or check out the Hipcooks studio to see what tasty treats they’re cooking up for the occasion.

  • Saturday and Sunday 11am-6pm. Free admission and parking. The Brewery, 2100 N Main Street, Downtown (map).

Halloween Parties and Why I’m Not Going

Since I made up my mind to not go out this Halloween (don’t feel like dealing with crowds, traffic and craziness) I went to the Ketel One Halloween party at the Edison downtown last night to get the holiday out of my system and to also get a chance to put on my costume one more time. I spent too much effort and money on that Carrie Bradshaw costume to only wear it once! Yes, that horse mask, which was part of my costume, was my bf’s idea thanks to this Web site.

Anyway, last night’s party was awesome and I figured a good preview of what Halloween night will be like at the Edison. Sure, there won’t be any of the fabulous free food or an open bar but there will be the same Halloween specialty cocktails ($13) — the Vampire’s Tonic (pomegranate martini) and Sewer Water (dirty martini) — as well as a costume contest where you can actually win $500 if yours is voted the best.

During last night’s party, the bartender dressed as Serena Williams (complete with muscular thighs and braids) won the costume contest and a huge bottle of Ketel One. A guy dressed as a Mexican gardener (?!) came in second and Willie Wonka a la Johnny Depp was third.

Also vaudeville act Lucent Dossier, who usually performs on Wednesdays at the venue, will be doing a very special spooky Halloween show for costumed revelers.

I had a really great time last night and the Edison was the perfect space for such an event. Huge, industrial and spooky. Check out that tunnel on the back wall of the Radio Room that I swear is haunted. It’s done up extra creepy for the occasion.

Everyone, well, most people at the party were dressed up. Guys really need to make more of an effort! Come on, it’s a great way to meet girls. A dude dressed as a box of Wheaties picked up a Barbie girl. Folks who show up at the door on Friday sans costume, your admission will be $50 as opposed to $45, if you didn’t already purchase your pre-sale tickets online.

Now, if I was going out on Halloween, the following are the parties I’d check out. I’m not down for the big Hollywood clubby parties, mind you, so if you want those look here:

Metromix’s Drop Dead Gore-geous Halloween at the Natural History Museum
I actually RSVP’d for this “just in case.” So if anyone wants to take my RSVP, just check in as me. But, really, how can I resist a Halloween party at a museum especially one with taxidermied animals and a scary Spider Pavilion? Sure, it’ll probably be packed with people wanting to dance to the roster of djs and live bands but it’s free! AND there’s a photo booth!

The Joker Halloween Party at Wokcano Santa Monica
Although I wasn’t crazy about the restaurant, the fact this is on the Westside works in this party’s favor. Also, the space with the outdoor patio is just really perfect for dancing in the moonlight. KCRW’s Chocolate City dj Garth Trinidad will be providing the groovy tunes. And there are free appetizers and a hosted vodka bar 9 to 10pm. Admission is only $10 to get in if you’re wearing a costume, $20 if you’re not.

Halloween Costume Party at Hangar 51
I like this downtown party for the cheap price ($10 presale, $15 at door, $25 if you’re not in costume) as well as all the live music. Or you can dance outside to djs. If you want some place to dance encostumed this sounds like the party. There’s also a lighted “dead carpet” runway where you can take pictures of your fabulous costumes and full inside and outside bars.

Malbecs and Slim Jims at Colorado Wine Company

lastnight 157

When you think fine wine pairings, I bet the last thing on your mind are Slim Jims and Ding Dongs. But that’s exactly what they served at the Colorado Wine Company this past weekend for the 2nd Annual White Trash Tasting. Before you cry “Sacrilege!” I’ll have you know that Jennifer and John Nugent, the owners of this Eagle Rock wine store, should actually be commended for their unique tasting event.

Apparently it was created to make wine tasting less intimidating to the Average Joe, like me who likes wine but couldn’t begin to tell you about notes and aromas and all that. The wine bar is cozy enough what with the low-key crowd and mood lighting but throw in the customer dressed in denim overalls for the occasion and the red checkered table cloth topped with a bowl of cheese puffs, a plate of Ding Dongs and a crock pot of chili and I never felt more at home. Plus it was extra fun having my blogger friends H.C. and estarLA there.

Halloween Cocktails: Seizing the Spirits

If you love Halloween as much as I do — candy corn isn’t a treat it’s a condiment — you’ll most definitely appreciate this list of cocktails where you can actually drink in the spooky holiday around Los Angeles (includes some Halloween night ideas, too).

The Edison downtown is going all out for Halloween with a kuh-ray-zee shindig ($40 advance, $45 at door, $50 without costume) showcasing an absinthe bar, live music, costume contests and the extra bendy Lucent Dossier Creepy Carnivale. Halloween cocktails ($13 each) include the Vampire’s Tonic — Ketel One Citron, pomegranate juice, Cointreau, lemon and garnished with pomegranate seeds — and the delightful-sounding Sewer Water — Ketel One Vodka, Dirty Sue olive brine and garnished with caper berries.

Ivan Kane’s Cafe W as in Hollywood wants to give your holiday an eerie green glow with its Halloween absinthe cocktails ($12 each). The Green Fairy Curse Margarita is made from blanco tequila, absinthe, lime juice and sweet and sour. Or go with the Bloody Valentine Fresa Fresca – muddled basil leaves, simple syrup, strawberry puree, Ketel One Citron, lime juice and topped with a float of absinthe. But you’ve gotta love the classic, Baby Jane Sazerac with rye whiskey, absinthe and a sugar cube saturated with dashes of Angostura bitters. For All Hallow’s Eve, the supper club will feature a special prixe fixe menu ($49, $19 additional with pairings).

Luna Park on La Brea will be offering the Love Blood cocktail ($10) through October 31. This rich red cocktail is made with Myers Rum, St. Germaine, pomegranate juice, cherries and garnished with a pair of “vampire” fangs. I’ll take 50ccs of that! Stat!

Ortega 120 in Redondo Beach will be celebrating Dia de los Muertos through November 2 with traditional Dia de los Muertos food (candied pumpkin and pan de muerto) and an art exhibit from Raul Amador. But it’s all about those spirited cocktails ($8 each): Chupa Verde — Partida Blanco, jalapeno jelly and lime juice served in a bucket — and the Calabaza Margarita — Partida Anejo, orange juice and pumpkin butter served in a martini glass and topped with whipped cream.

In Culver City, Rush Street‘s Candy Shots ($10 each) will instantly cure any Halloween candy craving. The Candy Corn is made from coffee liqueur, Absolut Vanilla and Grand Marnier. There’s Almond Joy with Van Gogh Dutch Chocolate Vodka, Cruzan Coconut Rum and Dekuyper Almond Liqueur. Or suck on a Tootsie Roll made of Patron Xo Cafe and orange juice. For Halloween, the restaurant will host a blowout featuring not only the traditional costume contest but an in-costume pole-dancing contest. No cover.

Southern-inspired watering hole, South, in Santa Monica promises a party you’ll never ferget, er remember, what with its smoking green Cauldron fish bowl cocktails ($40) that you can brazenly horde for yourself or share with your undead crew, $5 Scary South cocktails, $3 Dixie Blackened Voodoo beer, the ubiquitous costume contest and horror movies on all the TVs.

Wilshire, also in Santa Monica, presents its ode to fall, the Autumn Song ($15) — a spicy concoction of Zubrowka bison grass vodka and apple juice, garnished with an apple wedge dipped in caramel. Mmm, apple pie in a glass.

The Woods in Hollywood features Pumpkin Pie Shots ($3 on Halloween, $6 regular) made of Bols Pumpkin Smash liqueur, vodka, peppermint schnapps, Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum, orange juice, half and half and topped with a dab of whipped cream. For the holiday, they’ll have pumpkin pie shots all night as well as a dj at 10pm and a $100 cash prize for best costume.

Cocktail Review: Mission Cantina’s Jalapeno Martini

Jalapeno martini

Are you the type of person who LOVES spicy foods and feels that there’s no such thing as “too hot”? I challenge you, then, to try the firewater aka Jalapeno Martini ($11) at the Mission Cantina in Hollywood. Made of vodka, olive juice, the tiniest bit of simple syrup and then muddled with jalapeno peppers, this baby will burn the roof off your mouth.

My friend Shelley had ordered it (since I was the designated driver for last night’s girls’ night out) and I took a baby sip of it. What followed was coughing and blowing out puffs of air as if I had just chomped on a Bhut Jolokia chili. I felt like my lips had cuts on them and I had just poured rubbing alcohol on them.

The drink was tasty enough, like a dirty martini with a shitload of jalapeno flavoring but I just didn’t see how anyone could drink that in one sitting. It’s the kind of cocktail that you order if you want to just stick to one all night. Not me. Or if you are extremely patient and not much of a drinker. Again, not me.

We had pizza left over from our dinner at Delancey next door and Shelley proceeded to pull that out of the to-go box and chomp on it to soothe the burn. To my amazement she did manage to finish her drink in a shorter amount of time than I would have. But then again, she likes the spice.

As for the Mission bar itself, it was pretty low-key for a Thursday night, but I like that. And I especially like the fact that the bartender gave me gingerale for free since I was the designated driver. That would be cool if all bars did that.
