I decided to try my hand at mixing a cocktail when I was sent a bottle of Ventura Limoncello Originale ($14.99 for 375 ml) which is the first limoncello to be produced in Ventura County from locally grown fruit and is only available in Southern California.
My new housemates and I were throwing a housewarming party and I wanted to make something special so I adapted the lemon liqueur company’s own limoncello vanilla martini recipe so that it would make enough for a bunch of peeps. The result is a cocktail punch that tastes wonderfully like lemon cream pie with an extra sumthin sumthin.
Ingredients:
1 bottle of vanilla vodka (750 ml)
1 bottle of limoncello (375 ml)
1/2 bottle of lemon-lime soda or to taste
1 can of lemonade concentrate
Ice cubes
Blueberries for garnish
Pour the bottle of limoncello into a punch bowl followed by the lemonade concentrate and stir. Next add the vanilla vodka and the blueberries. Each serving should be poured over ice and topped with lemon-lime soda to taste.
I kept the mixture in the fridge until it was ready to serve and then poured a ladel of the concoction into a glass of ice and topped it with a bit of the lemon-lime soda. The girls in my party LOVED it, calling it Caroline in a glass, whatever that means. Heh. But the boys, my friend John of Social Domain and my bf, thought it was too sweet and they ended up cutting it with some water. John suggested I substitute club soda for the lemon-lime soda. I’ll have to try that next time.
Anyway, give it a try and let me know what you think. Salut!
If you were big into dinosaurs when you were a kid, or even as an adult, I’m guessing you’ll get a kick out of the Walking With Dinosaurs show playing at the Staples Center this weekend. Even though I’m not exactly a dinophile, I checked out the show last night after having watched the making of it on TV. Seventeen man-made dinosaurs, all “life-size” and walking around on stage, interacting with one another. That part was pretty cool. The narrator/paleontologist took us through the different dino periods (Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous), explaining which animal was what, etc.
Now, although I can appreciate the stage interpretation of these massive creatures and their environment and the great amount of work that went into making everything, I was meh about the show while watching it. I blame that on Jurassic Park and even the TV series of Walking With Dinosaurs. After seeing what can be done with computer graphics to replicate what these animals must have looked like and sounded like and even killed like, the live action was kinda, well, not boring, but only mildly amusing. There were a couple of dinosaur battles but of course no clashes which could end in a bloody mess. These were very expensive animatronic dinosaurs and couldn’t be damaged.
But I imagined if this show was around when I was a kid, I definitely would have pee’d in my pants seeing these dinosaurs in action. They moved and roared; yes, the animals roared themselves, it didn’t come from the sound system speakers. The eyes blinked and were expressive, like when the giant 36-foot-high brachiosaurus cuddled with its baby and closed its eyes in contentment. Awww. Flowers and foliage popped up from the ground and it “rained” in the Staples Center as well as “flamed” up during the many fires of those early days. We even took to the skies with the ornithocheirus.
The star of the show, well at least judging by the screams and cheers it drew, was of course the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Funnily enough, David Markland of LA Metblogs and Creepyla.com told me that the T Rex was played by Creepyla.com writer and apparently “badass Sarah Palin impersonator,” Jessica Chisum. When the T Rex started snapping at the other dinosaurs, I couldn’t help but giggle and think, “That’s a good Palin impression. Heh.”
Anyway, yeah, I’d suggest going to this if you know some kids who are dinosaur fanatics or if you are just THAT into dinosaurs. Tickets range from $26-$79.50 but as a special through September 28 you can save $3 per ticket when you get a group of friends of 10 or more together and purchase tickets.

Tis the season of grand eating as we have food festivals going off everywhere in L.A. But one of the biggest ones is the American Wine & Food Festival which is celebrating its 25th year and will take place at the Universal Studios back lot this Saturday.
However, if you’re thinking $300 is a pretty penny to pay for gorging yourself on the tasty treats and cocktails from the top chefs and wine/spirits purveyors from around the world you can always check out the AWFF’s more affordable kick-off party, Red Hot @ Red Seven, at the Pacific Design Center this Friday the 26th from 7-11pm.
For $150, you can enjoy some of the best restaurants in a setting more intimate than that huge back lot. Plus proceeds benefit Meals on Wheels programs in Los Angeles.

So you know how Fred Segal’s big 50% off sale is kicking off this Friday? Wellll, my friend David over at Fred Segal Eyes in Santa Monica has invited me and my crackheads to check out the sale a day earlier at the private presale party on Thursday the 25th!”Is it open to the public or something?” I asked him. “Only people who are VIPs or ‘friends’ are told about this ‘private’ event. So, yes your readers can get in. Your readers are an extension of you and you are definitely a friend of ours!” Aw!
That’s right, you get to shop all the goodies before the public picks through them. Ha! Apparently they have “some of the most amazing merchandise” for this sale — men’s and women’s clothing, hats, handbags, jewelry, shoes, all at 50% off.
At David’s sunglasses shop, he has a selection from Oliver Peoples, Paul Smith, Tom Ford, Balenciaga, Gucci and more. Most of these frames are overstock from designers and are still full price in most stores across the country, but you can get ‘em for half off. Which is perfect cuz I was looking to update my look for fall actually. Heh.
Also kids from the nonprofit Heart of LA (HOLA) will be there to sell their original artwork and you can buy HOLA t-shirts to benefit the organization. So warm fuzzies all around.
That’s my friend Shelley who had put a winning bid on a downtown pub crawl at Savor the Season’s silent auction Sunday night. Shelley thought it would be funny if she won the auction and dragged me along. “Funny” because the company sponsoring the pub crawl is the same one that had banned me from their bars. “They can’t kick you out if you go cuz we won this auction,” Shelley said.
In all honesty, I just don’t care to go but then again, what kind of person would I be if I turned down a free drink? I’m torn. In any case, she thought her winning bid of $110 was a good deal considering the prize’s value was $140 for four drinks (wine, beer or well cocktail) at four different bars (that’s four drinks a bar) as well as a gift basket of two beers, a bottle of wine, appetizer picks and plates.
In any case that was the piece de resistance of our night at Savor the Season, a food festival to benefit the charity Break the Cycle. Shelley and I enjoyed the food and drink from some of the top restaurants and food purveyors in L.A. The portions were appetizer size but there were many and the lines were nonexistent so it was easy to go back for seconds, thirds and fourths as the case may be. Plus they had passed appetizers on top of it all!
It’s about time someone made a t-shirt for Downtown, Culver City, Miracle Mile, Griffith Park…Boyle Heights! You live in L.A. but an “I Love L.A.” t-shirt just ain’t gonna cut it, plus that Randy Newman song gives you hives.
Fortunately Thrillist found Y-Que, a Los Feliz t-shirt shop that has took it upon themselves to create a screenprinted American Apparel shirt for “everything west of the 605,” meaning every neighborhood from Redondo Beach to Riverside (OK, that’s east of the 605).
Little graphics on the tee bring each neighborhood to life as well; Downtown gets the ubiquitous shopping cart, Boyle Heights a mariachi, and South Central a gun. Or you can choose your own graphics, in addition to whatever color t-shirt you want. And at $12-$18, the prices aren’t too bad.
Y-Que’s Web site doesn’t show the whole inventory yet, but you can always check out the goods in person at the store and even customize your gear.
Needless to say, having just completed my move to Westchester this weekend, I am thrilled.

Ever since I saw the signage on the West Hollywood storefront touting “The Britney Shake, The Paris Shake, The Lindsay Shake” I’ve been intrigued by Millions of Milkshakes, a shop dedicated only to that dairy delicacy. What’s this? Will they serve adult milkshakes, i.e. with liquor? What’s with the celebutard tie-in?
Apparently, the idea for MoM started off in London as a 24-hour Hollywood theme diner which served milkshakes and food. Sheeraz Hasan, owner of MoM, wanted to bring his idea for a milkshake bar to L.A. So there we have it.
MoM has already been open for three weeks now and I was FINALLY able to swing by. The store was brightly lit and sported signs galore. “Milkshakes!” “Sundaes!” “Open til 2am!” but no actual menus. There were directions at the start of the line where a helpful…milkshake guide (?) took our order asking us if we wanted 1) a milkshake or sundae; 2) ice cream, soy or yogurt; and 3) which toppings/ingredients.
Sounds simple enough until you see the bazillion types of toppings you have to choose from; nuts, candies, fruit, cookies, cereal, sauces, and even boosts…ay yi yi. Bazooka bubblegum? In a milkshake?!
I’ll be too busy this weekend with my big move (and seeing Beck at the Bowl) but here are some things YOU can do.
Friday, September 19
Old Navy’s Best Friend Weekend Sale
Who shops alone? Exactly. So while you’re out on a spree with your buddy, stop by an Old Navy and you both can get 20% off your purchases if you use the password “BFF.” Yeah, it sucks you have to say “BFF” aloud but, hey, discounts are always good.
Friday, September 19 through Sunday, September 21. Various Old Navy locations.
Godfather Double Feature at the ArcLight
I JUST watched Godfather I and II last year for the first time and wondered what took me so long. Awesome films. And now fans can see it on the big screen at the ArcLight. Sure that’s about six hours out of your day but this print has been meticulously restored, overseen by Coppola himself!
Friday, September 19 through Thursday, September 25. ArcLight Hollywood, 6360 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood (map). (323) 464-4226.
Blumesday at the M Bar
Judy Blume was a part of any young girl’s development. Now you can enjoy her works as an adult as a group of writers and performers will read passages from their favorite Judy Blume works. SNL’s Melanie Hutsell will read Forever and Six Feet Under’s Jill Soloway will pair with Carrie Aizley (Campus Ladies) to read Deenie. I wanna know who’s covering Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret?
8pm. $8 cover, reservations encouraged. $10 food minimum. M Bar, 1253 Vine Street, Los Angeles (map). (323) 856-0036.
Saturday, September 20
Pan de Leche Strawberry French Toast at Ortega 120
This Redondo Beach cantina is kicking off weekend brunches this Saturday. You have five breakfast entrees to choose from but the French toast sounds like a knockout what with thick cut sweet pan de leche stuffed with sweet cream & strawberries, agave maple syrup, powdered sugar. Need more? $3 mimosas, nuff said.

Last Cinespia Cemetery Screening of the Season: Alien
Aww! Is it over already?! Yes, I’m afraid it is. The LAST screening of Cinespia is this Saturday and it’s the mother of all horror movies, Alien! In space, no one can hear you scream…but I’m sure other movie-goers in the cemetery will want you to keep it down. Anyway, I’m really sad I’m going to miss this one.
Gates open at 6:30; show 8pm. $10. Hollywood Forever Cemetery, 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles (map).
Sunday, September 21
Savor the Season 2008
If $300 is too much for you to pay for the American Wine & Food Festival that’s happening next weekend, you may want to check out Savor the Season 2008 which has been called “one of the top ten food and wine events in Southern California” AND it’s $100! Enjoy the goods from some of the top L.A. chefs as well as music, wine and spirits. This event benefits Break the Cycle, the leading organization that raises awareness and provides support for teen victims of domestic violence.
6-9pm. $100 gen admission/$250 VIP. Vibiana, 210 S. Main Street, Downtown (map).
Goldfrapp at the Orpheum
Dude! Goldfrapp is performing at the beautiful downtown theatre, the Orpheum! Imagine Alison’s ethereal voice in that setting. Amazingly there are still tickets to this awesome show. Balcony, but so what?
8pm. $30. Orpheum Theatre, 842 S Broadway, Downtown (map).
It’s easy to take places for granted after they’ve been around for several years but when I heard that Wilshire Restaurant in Santa Monica was sporting a new cocktail menu AND dessert menu I had to revisit it.
Last time I was there, I had gone for their very short 5-6:30pm happy hour, and the specialty cocktail list then left much to be desired. But now the happy hour seems to have been extended a half hour so it’s 5-7pm and the specialty cocktail list (not part of the happy hour) finally sounds like something made by someone who knows what they’re doing. And apparently it is.
I didn’t know this was open to the public as I was invited to cover it for LAist but apparently it IS according to LA.MyOpenBar.com! Little Britain USA, the same show but taking place in America, will be screening at the Original Penguin Store in Hollywood tomorrow night.
You’ll be one of the first few folks to watch LBUSA that, despite being another British show turned American, is, I hear, surprisingly as funny as the original. The show will debut on HBO on September 28.
At the screening party there will be free Bass Ale and snacks to consume as well as tunes spun by Part Time Punks DJ Michael Stock. Like I said, I will definitely be there as I was a big fan of the British show and am curious to see what they do with these characters in America.
I don’t know why this is considered a secret sale because I got an email about it and everything but The Warehouse Sale is having one at the Pasadena Convention Center next weekend from Friday, September 26 to Sunday, September 28. And from the looks of it, it’s huge, featuring over 30 premium brands of denim, dresses, hoodies and sweats for both women and men at up to 90% off.
The sale gets progressively bigger over the course of the weekend, too.
Friday — 5 jeans for $250
Saturday — 6 jeans for $250
Sunday — 10 jeans for $250
The last day sounds like an awesome deal but the catch is that there isn’t any dressing rooms or try-ons allowed for some reason so you gotta be really good at gauging what looks good on you and how it’s going to fit just by eyeballing it. Yikes.
Admission is free if you RSVP (aka register with the site) or $5 at the door.
EVENT: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 to SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28
Pasadena Convention Center, East Pavilion 300 East Green Street Pasadena, California 91101 (map)
OK, this deal seems hardly fair to your friend but if you and your buddy get a Blueberry Bliss Pedicure ($65) at Bellacures in West Hollywood any time from today to Thursday the 18th, one of you (you) will get a free manicure which usually runs $45! Yeah, I know, eesh. But check out what they do to you for your money when you get the pedi.
They soak your tootsies to soften them and then scrub away the dead skin with their homemade blueberry scrub. You also get callus treatment as needed at no extra charge. Afterward, they slather your feet with blueberry lotion and put them in either a steamed hot towel or hot electric booties (your choice) to infuse moisture in your exfoliated skin. And THEN, you get a 10-minute massage.
If you spring for the mani-pedi combo, you get a complimentary blueberry martini to sip on while you kick back and relax. Being a cheapskate, even I can appreciate that it’s good to splurge on a fancy mani-pedi every now and again.
