Why I Hate Some Radiohead Fans
Posted by Caroline on Crack under Los Angeles, Other -
RadioHEAD captured via cell phone camera (only shot I took during the concert!)
OK, in truth this doesn’t have to mean specifically Radiohead fans. I could also apply it to Hollywood Bowl concert goers and maybe even concert goers in general. But I got to see one of my ultimate favorite bands play at the Bowl last night and, of course, it was an awesome experience save for my run in with the crowd of Radiohead-ites (what are Radiohead fans called, anyway?) in the sold-out show. Granted, a lot of this may be just due to the fact that I’m getting older and therefore more curmudgeonly.
Annoying people at the concert:
- The couple who refused to stop holding hands as I tried to push through the crowd to catch up with my party before I lost them in the sea of people. The resilient couple wouldn’t let go of each other even though I was already up against their hands, so I just lifted up their grasped paws and went under it like London Bridge falling down. “Chill, chill!” the dude said. Whatev! He couldn’t let go of his girl for one second to let me pass?
- The 7-foot-tall man with an unusually wide head who, despite sitting in the front row of the section, insists on standing up, causing everyone else behind him to stand up. He could see just fine sitting down as our section was at the edge of the boxed seats so the stage was unobstructed. But nooo, he had to stand up so he could spoon his tiny girlfriend and sway to Radiohead.
- The potheads behind me who kept puffing away during the entire concert. Really? The entire concert? I’m surprised they were able to make it out of the Bowl after. As it was there was a constant pot cloud hanging over my head. But at least it wasn’t cigarette smoke…I guess.
- The mom in front of me who danced with her arms above her head. Now I luuuve Radiohead but I don’t think you can really dance to them. You can move to the music, sure, but swish around like you’re dancing to Madonna’s “Into the Groove”? Nah!
- This girl standing next to us who had both her phone and her camera out, the screens blazing brightly in the darkened venue, to document the concert. She proceeded to take pictures of herself with Radiohead performing as the back drop. Flash on of course.
- All the people around us videoing the concert, and there were a lot of them. You could see their bright screens.
- People who started leaving during the encores, pushing past those still watching the concert. You’re going to miss out on this awesome performance…to avoid traffic?
And I have to admit there were the few moments when I did love the Radiohead crowd:
- When the audience did that little kid cheer during “15 Step.” Aww. Yayy!
- People actually hugged each other when they heard the first moments of “Karma Police.”
- When everyone in the Bowl sang, “This is what you get…” in unison.
- When Radiohead started “Fake Plastic Trees” and a girl behind us yelled, “I knew it! I knew it!”
BTW, here’s an actual review about the show including some video clips. Crazy Andy!

Yeah some of those ppl you hate were kinda like me, or like ppl I know who loooove Radiohead who love to dance vigorously with their hands and legs all over the place. But yeah, it was such an awesome performance. I think night #1 was definitely more energetic…the night #2 crowd seemed quieter and subdued. Which is weird since I noticed there were more 20 somethings in night #2… I felt like the only one cheering and screaming for Radiohead in my row and section.

Noo, the dancing thing was only mildly irritating. You aren’t a gigantic person who obstructed everyone’s view and you definitely didn’t take pictures during the concert. But maybe everyone was chill during this night because it was a school night?

You’re mad at a guy for being tall?
Who sits at a Radiohead concert?
Unbelievable show, by the way.

BM,
I’m mad at him for being tall, sitting in the front row and standing up anyway. I forgot to add that after four songs he was nice enough to sit down for the rest of the concert…until the encores.
Oh, and people behind me got mad at me for standing up cuz I couldn’t see. So there you have it.

The tall guy standing at a concert drives me crazy. I was at a show the other day, everyone was sitting except for this one huge guy, causing one small area of people to stand up. Everyone got mad at us, but we couldn’t see because of this d-bag!

Caroline - no offense intended - I just expected that everyone would be standing, given the energy at the show (my section was up pretty much the whole time). Hope you had a good time overall; I have never seen anything quite like what went out last night.

DC,
I’m sayin!
BM,
No worries. Yeah, it was an awesome show and these were actually the best seats I’ve ever had for a Radiohead concert…or really any concert, I think.

Trying not to be jealous, here! But glad you had a great time despite the peeves you had to endure. I can relate to most of them. :)
My friend went the first night and was disappointed they didn’t play more old stuff. Or even a little, I think. He also noted Thom forgot lyrics a couple times which made the band start over. No one’s perfect!
The consolation I give myself was that I was less-than-impressed with their latest effort. I admit that I get intimidated by fame supposedly “alternative” bands achieve.

Esther,
OMG I LOVE In Rainbows. And I love how each of their albums sound progressively different. In any case, it’s funny how when they played stuff from The Bends it sounded like classics. And it seemed like everyone knew the words to the OK Computer songs.

you are getting old.

Who’s Radiohead?

In Rainbows never sounded as good as it did last night. These REALLY are great songs (although I still think “House of Cards” is Radiohead’s weak take on yacht rock). Always relevatory is how Fake Plastic Trees is so obviously the prototype on which Coldplay invented themselves.
It was the best concert I’ve seen all year.

I think Radiohead fans should be called Radioheadheads.
(I bet that’s an old joke, but I wouldn’t know because I’m sheltered and lived in a non-English speaking country for too long.)
Why did Gerard end up going to two shows? How the hell did he manage that?

You know what They say: if it’s too loud you’re too old! ;-)
Going to a lot of shows, I totally see where you’re coming from. Though, most of it is just the way the concert-going experience is these days (cams, pot, standing up)…but leaving during the encore?! That just ain’t right!

I went to the same concert. It always amazes me that people pay money to see these icons of music and then spend half the concert talking or stumbling around. There were 4 people smoking marijuana in front of us for most of the concert. Another drunk lady went to the bathroom at least 5 times. Another person kept whistling every time a song would begin. No courtesy, no concern for other people trying to watch the performance. That said, Radiohead was amazing.
