Kokomo Cafe: Free 90210′s Peach Pit Specials

From Seriouslyomg.com

Last week when I was taking the lonnng way to ArcLight Hollywood to see Tropic Thunder, we drove down Beverly Boulevard in West Hollywood and noticed quite a ruckus of trucks, lights and people standing around this one particular restaurant. The signs around this restaurant read “Peach Pit.” “That can’t be right. A place with such a stupid name couldn’t exist in real life,” I thought. “And on Beverly Boulevard?” My friend dotsara, who was with me, asked, “Is there really a Peach Pit?” Turns out they were filming that new 90210 at the Kokomo Cafe, usually one of my fave places for chicken and waffles. Ohhhh. Meh.

In, er, celebration of its anointment as the real-life stand-in for the new West Bev High kids’ hangout, Kokomo Cafe will be serving some of its Peach Pit/90210-inspired specials for free on Tuesday, September 2 (the day the show premieres on the CW) from 2 to 4pm.

  • Leggo My Eggold: a Belgium waffle with two eggs and bacon
  • Mr. Wilson Burger: double beef burger with cheddar and bacon
  • Nat Your Average Smoothie: Made with peach ice cream, of course

There will be more 90210 specials available for purchase as well, but all will be available for purchase throughout the month of September.

In any case, I keep meaning to check out the Kokomo’s relocation from the Farmer’s Market on 3rd Street. I’m craving me some fried chicken with vanilla waffles ($8.95). Mmm!

This Weekend: But, I’m Not Ready To Say Good-Bye

Awww, the last weekend of the summer. Whether you spend it running the Nike + Human Race 10K or just hitting as many end-of-summer pool parties and barbecues as possible, I hope you have a good one. As for me, this might finally be the weekend I get that Vespa. I know!

Friday, August 29

Buy Your Tickets to Jon Favreau’s Live Commentary of Iron Man
This is the coolest thing I’ve ever heard: Jon Favreau, the director of Iron Man, will be doing a commentary during a screening of his awesome superhero movie at the Aero Theatre. You know, just like they have on DVDs. I love that feature. However, if you’ve never seen this movie before, this is probably not the best way to see it. “Yo! Down in front! Shut up!” Heh.

  • Tickets $10 for show on September 6.

Last Fridays Off the 405 Ever!
It’s the last one of the season and next year they’ll be moving it from Friday to Saturday, thus no more afterwork celebrations. Ah well. This last one features a moody Cure-esque vibe from Echo Park’s own Monsters Are Waiting and a DJ set from Justin Warfield and Adam 12 of She Wants Revenge.

  • 6-9pm. Free. Getty Center, 1200 Getty Center Drive, Los Angeles (map).

Saturday, August 30

Grand (Re)Opening of Skylight Books
Independent bookstores rule and one of the great L.A. ones is becoming even greater with its expansion. The Skylight Books annex — where you can find the art, design, music, film/theatre books and magazines — opens this weekend. A party, ribbon-cutting ceremony and even a champagne christening highlights opening day at 3pm. Enjoy a musical performance by Skylight Juice, the bookstore’s own band, as well as discounts and refreshments.

  • 3pm. 1818 N. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles (map). (323) 660-1175.

F Yeah Fest 5
I was gonna say go to this event cuz it’s cool but now I’ll just say go to this event to support the promoters who recently got a horrible beatdown by the Hollywood Bowl security. Eesh. And besides that, at the Echo and Echoplex, for only $16-$17, you’ll get to enjoy 30 bands each day, like No Age, Crystal Antlers, Ladyhawk and more.

  • Saturday and Sunday at 4pm. $16 advance/$17 at the door. The Echo, 1822 W. Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles (map). (213) 413-8200.

Monday, September 1

Labor Day Pool Party at the Backyard @ W
It just wouldn’t feel like Labor Day without that requisite pool party. And might as well make it a fancy one at the W where fashionable pool attire is required. Nosh on the special holiday breakfast menu while sipping cocktails. If you’d rather dance than soak in the pool, DJ Marshall Barnes and DJ Politik will provide the tunes. If you don’t make it onto the list for this party, there is always Saturday’s ultra-hip Wet Pool Party at Custom Hotel ($30).

  • 10am-8pm. The Backyard, 930 Hilgard Avenue, Westwood (map). (310) 208-8765. For guest list, email events [at] choicehospitalitygroup.com.

Viva Las Vegas at ArcLight Sherman Oaks: Swingers Screening and Vegas Cocktails

One of my favorite movies about L.A. has gotta be Swingers. I love watching it and revisiting the hot spots of the ’90s — The Dresden and The Derby. And remember when Vince Vaughn was considered cute and not so bloated? Anyway, wrapping up the special Viva Las Vegas Party ArcLight series for its members is a 21+ screening of Swingers at the ArcLight Sherman Oaks. Yes, the liquored-up screening. Cuz it wouldn’t be Vegas without cocktails, baby. At the bar, you can take your pick of Sin City-themed drinks:

  • Old Blue Eyes ($10): Stoli Blueberi and Absolut Vanilla
  • Blackjack ($9): double shot of Gentleman Jack on the rocks
  • Hot Dice ($7.95): Coffee with a shot of Patrón XO Café coffee liqueur, a swirl of Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate Syrup, topped with whipped cream

No special fee to become an ArcLight member, just register. And you’ll get heads-up about special screenings (that’s how I got to see The Dark Knight before the premiere midnight screenings), members-only invitations to private screenings and Q&As, and member admission pricing.

EVENT: THURSDAY, AUGUST 28 at 7:30pm

Why I Hate Some Radiohead Fans

radioHEAD.jpg

RadioHEAD captured via cell phone camera (only shot I took during the concert!)

OK, in truth this doesn’t have to mean specifically Radiohead fans. I could also apply it to Hollywood Bowl concert goers and maybe even concert goers in general. But I got to see one of my ultimate favorite bands play at the Bowl last night and, of course, it was an awesome experience save for my run in with the crowd of Radiohead-ites (what are Radiohead fans called, anyway?) in the sold-out show. Granted, a lot of this may be just due to the fact that I’m getting older and therefore more curmudgeonly.

Annoying people at the concert:

  • The couple who refused to stop holding hands as I tried to push through the crowd to catch up with my party before I lost them in the sea of people. The resilient couple wouldn’t let go of each other even though I was already up against their hands, so I just lifted up their grasped paws and went under it like London Bridge falling down. “Chill, chill!” the dude said. Whatev! He couldn’t let go of his girl for one second to let me pass?
  • The 7-foot-tall man with an unusually wide head who, despite sitting in the front row of the section, insists on standing up, causing everyone else behind him to stand up. He could see just fine sitting down as our section was at the edge of the boxed seats so the stage was unobstructed. But nooo, he had to stand up so he could spoon his tiny girlfriend and sway to Radiohead.
  • The potheads behind me who kept puffing away during the entire concert. Really? The entire concert? I’m surprised they were able to make it out of the Bowl after. As it was there was a constant pot cloud hanging over my head. But at least it wasn’t cigarette smoke I guess.
  • The mom in front of me who danced with her arms above her head. Now I luuuve Radiohead but I don’t think you can really dance to them. You can move to the music, sure, but swish around like you’re dancing to Madonna’s “Into the Groove”? Nah!
  • This girl standing next to us who had both her phone and her camera out, the screens blazing brightly in the darkened venue, to document the concert. She proceeded to take pictures of herself with Radiohead performing as the back drop. Flash on of course.
  • All the people around us videoing the concert, and there were a lot of them. You could see their bright screens.
  • People who started leaving during the encores, pushing past those still watching the concert. You’re going to miss out on this awesome performance…to avoid traffic?

And I have to admit there were the few moments when I did love the Radiohead crowd:

  • When the audience did that little kid cheer during “15 Step.” Aww. Yayy!
  • People actually hugged each other when they heard the first moments of “Karma Police.”
  • When everyone in the Bowl sang, “This is what you get!” in unison.
  • When Radiohead started “Fake Plastic Trees” and a girl behind us yelled, “I knew it! I knew it!”

BTW, here’s an actual review about the show including some video clips. Crazy Andy!

FREE Ice Cream: Silky Smooth Ultra Creamery

Picture 1.png

I’ve never heard of Silky Smooth Ultra Creamery before (maybe cuz its only location is deep in the bowels of the Beverly Center Mall and not even in the food court) but apparently it was voted #1 ice cream/gelato in L.A. on MyFoxLA and it’s a “microcreamery,” meaning that it handcrafts this unique fusion of gourmet ice cream, custard and gelato. Its 90% fat-free desserts are made fresh and served at a warmer temp than usual ice cream temperatures so as to not shock your tastebuds and therefore let you enjoy it more. A thorough review about the goods can be found here.

Anyhoo, if you don’t know about this place either, you can check it out this Wednesday as they will be giving away one free full serving of a single flavor of either the frozen dessert or fruit sorbet. You know what they say, “The first taste is free.”

Pamper Me Fabulous: An Ultimate Girls’ Day Out

Neihule Salon

With mini spa treatments galore, sweets to your heart’s content and a swank downtown Los Angeles loft setting, who wouldn’t enjoy being a girl at the Pamper Yourself Fabulous event last week? I was lucky enough to be one of the 100+ attendees at this sold-out spa day, a girls’ day out unlike any other. No sample sales to stress over or wine tastings to get sloppy during, it’s all about rest and relaxation here. For $165 a ticket (10% of the proceeds benefit the charity Step Up Womens Network), we were treated to our choice of three mini spa treatments (each about 15-20 minutes long) from some of the hottest L.A. spas and salons, which most likely charge a pretty penny for their regular services.

Even though there was the uber-popular salon Neihule offering haircuts and styling, a spray-on bronzing by E! reality TV show/tanning salon Sunset Tan and a cold stone facial massage by Cote D’Azur, I opted for the simple pleasures, plus I already got my hair done and I’m already a lovely olive color.

Nope, instead I enjoyed a quickie makeover by Artform Studio where the makeup artist showed me the joys of shiny pink lip gloss. I then passed out during a luxurious hand and foot massage at El Leon Spa and got polished up with a little eyebrow shaping by Christopher Watt Esthetics.
