Girls Love Whiskey, Too

The other day while I was waiting for a friend at South, I had ordered a Maker’s Manhattan. The trio of happy hour revelers sitting a few barstools down from me asked me what I was drinking as they were apparently intrigued that it came in a martini glass. When I told them, they went on to have a conversation amongst themselves. “That was my dad’s favorite drink,” the one woman told her friends. “He had a drinking problem.” H’well! I’m sittin’ right here! Whatev.
Why do people think whiskey is too hard-core for women to drink? Or that if you are a woman who drinks whiskey, you must be trying to fit in with the guys. In any case, the above is my growing list of favorite whiskeys. I say “growing” because just when I think I’ve found a favorite, another one pops up. So many yummy ones. As I’ve said before, I suggest visiting the whiskey aisle at Wally’s in West L.A. if you’re looking for help choosing a good one or check out a Scotch tasting at the Wine House.
The next time you visit, we’re doing a blind taste test of all our single malts!

First of all I believe poeple who don’t know whiskey think like that.
A connesieur of Whiskey will know what whiskey is really like.
I always had a glass of whiskey after a long day, and always felt good about it. My piano teacher , she also teached me to have a small glass after lunch for digestion.
Well, after all, if you know how to taste it ( forget about people who want to get drunk and they drinks whiskey by shots, and forget about other people who think Jack’s daniels is a whiskey) You will find yourself in a really nice adventure with different tastes and smells.
Oh, Whiskey:)
Or that if you are a woman who drinks whiskey, you must be trying to fit in with the guys.
In here, I always found the opposite.
Actually 1. going in a bar and asking for a neat whiskey (named per choice of the moment) even the bartender looks always suprised, but nevertheless
2. I’ve seen a lot of guys trying to fit into your “whiskey world” while they see you having one. Mostly they are intimidated. In this case, i have stories of guys trying to show themselves and drink “whatever whiskey” just to fit. ( some of them just passed out after)
So..there’s no sexuality call in whiskey, but you always need a guide in the beginnings of your adventure. Just somebody who will share his culture about it.
I will reccomend :
Talisker
Green Bushmills (10 years old)
Edradour (the smallest distillery ever)
and of course , for just a happy hour I always go for simple Bushmills or Cutty Sark. Both are light and tasty.
A Maker’s Manhattan, perfect, straight up, is my favorite drink. Half the fun is drinking it from the martini glass. If it’s served in anything else, I send it straight back to the bar. But, I confess. As much as I love Maker’s Mark, I hate to order call drinks because it adds another $3 to a drink that’s already in the double digits.
Jennifer,
OK! Sounds like a funnnn visit.
K.,
Actually you’re right about the bartender raising an eyebrow to my ordering a Maker’s Manhattan. One time I thought the waiter at the Abbey was going to high-five me.
Susan C,
At South the MM is actually about $12 or so. To me that’s worth it considering I’ve paid for not-so-great cocktails for about that price. This way I know I’m getting something good fer sure.
Ever since I got a bottle of the Glenlivet in a family Christmas gift exchange I’ve been trying to learn more about whiskeys. I first thought I preferred Scotch, but I think I just liked the idea of these cool old Scottish mills..lately I’ve been more into bourbon. I still have a lot to try/learn, but I definitely appreciate whiskey a lot more than vodka or rum, so I’m happy to try new stuff each time I go to a bar! (Lately it’s been a bourbon and ginger for me.)
