Malo’s New and Tasty Tequila Cocktail Menu

Wonder where all your favorite bartenders from Seven Grand have gone?
Well, Aidan Demarest (formerly 7G and the Doheny’s GM) is now director of beverages and spirits at the Edison, Damian Windsor will be starting his stint at Gordon Ramsay at the London on July 2 (I’ll consider that an early bday present), Marcos Tellos is bartending at West Hollywood’s Comme Ca and running For Medicinal Purposes — a cocktail consulting company — with Damian, Patrick Kelly (former 7G bar manager) is working on opening his own bar, Michel Dozois is working at Comme Ca and has his own gourmet ice company and Christine D’Abrosca (the only woman bartender at 7G) is now the beverage manager at Malo Taqueria Chicana, the hip Mexican restaurant in Silver Lake.
And Malo’s cocktail list is souped up thanks to the cocktail wizardry of Marcos and Damian. So now you get more than margaritas, mojitos and sangria. Not that Malo’s original concoctions were bad. There are just more of ‘em now. And you get things done to tequila that you’ve never even thought could happen before. Sounds so drinkable. Tequila fans will rejoice and tequila haters may want to reconsider.
The muy especial specialty cocktail menu after the jump…
- Medicina Latina ($13): 4 Copas Reposado, fresh ginger juice, agave and lime with a Del Maguey Mezcal Mist
- Anejo Honey Sour ($15): 4 Copas Anejo, fresh lemon and honey syrup
- The Spicy Cucumber ($11): Casa Noble Silver, cucumber, agave nectar, fresh lime and chile
- Anejo Old Fashioned ($12): Gran Cenenario Anejo, agave nectar and bitters
- La Ultima Palabra ($11): Casa Noble Silver, fresh lime, maraschino liqueur and Amarena cherries
- El “Natural” ($15): Partida Anejo Tequila, Partida Agave Nectar, fresh lime served up
That Medicina Latina and La Ultima Palabra sound dee-lish!
There’s also a mezcal and sotol list as well as an extensive tequila menu which Christine emphasizes doesn’t include Patron as Malo ONLY carries 100% Blue Agave that is “hencho en Mexico.” “The United States does not recognize all the laws of tequila like we recognize the laws of say Cognac or Champagne and so on,” says Christine. “So it is important that even if it is 100% Agave it also says ‘Hencho en Mexico.’ There is a group of beverage industry people who are working together to change that.”
Malo’s cocktail list will change and evolve over time, and every two weeks (starting June 25) there will be house specials as well. Currently, there is a happy hour Monday through Friday 5 to 7pm with $5 margaritas and $3 well drinks, but look for a slightly improved HH menu on July 1. And the restaurant is now open for brunch and afternoon tacos on Saturdays and Sundays at 9am.
Sounds like I may have found a new hang!

H.C.,
Yeah, I definitely have to try out the cocktails. They sound soo yummy.
Yolanda,
I’m actually going to be taking a road trip for my birthday. Since I have the big blogiversary party in August, I figure I’ll focus all my party energy on that one instead.

Yes! Malo is awesome, the drinks are great and so is the al pastor ;-)
I’ve also had great luck asking the bartenders there to “freestyle” something interesting…kind of a favorite request lately. Some times I just don’t know what I want!
(P.S. AWESOME blog…Google Reader recommended the feed, so I’ll be tuned in from now on ;-)

Ethan,
I like to ask bartenders to freestyle it, too. Or ask them what their specialties are. That’s always fun and interesting to see what they come up with. Thanks for reading!
