Destee-Nation Unknown: SoCal Bar T-Shirts

Destee-Nation's Paradise Cove T-ShirtIt probably wouldn’t surprise you to know that I have a small collection of bar t-shirts. There’s that raunchy Irish pub in San Luis Obispo, that lazy mai tai bar in Maui and that meh martini bar in West L.A.

OK, it’s a very small collection but I just realized that I had it. And then I thought how cool would it be if there was a site that listed every bar that sold a shirt. That way you could just buy it online instead of having to hunt them down, especially if it was a bar in New Orleans and you were just feeling nostalgic.

I was just about to mail this idea to myself when I read a blurb about Destee-Nation on Thrillist. Destee-Nation is an online and retail store that sells T-shirts from real places, including bars! Each T-shirt description is even good enough to provide a little background of the bar, some pictures and address and hours info!

So far, it seems, for SoCal, they only have tees for Shellback Tavern in Manhattan Beach, Reel Inn and Paradise Cove in Malibu, Newport Beach Brewing Company, and Longboard Restaurant & Pub and Huntington Beach Beer Co. in Huntington Beach. But they’re on the lookout for more tees to add to their collection, so you can add them to your own.

If you have a favorite drink spot (or SoCal spot) that you think deserves to have a tee made of it, submit your suggestion via the nifty Suggest a T-Shirt form. If the Destee-Nation folks like what they read, they’ll go check out the establishment.

Sooo, what are some good bars? I’d say the Good Luck Bar, definitely Tiki Ti, and, ohhhh The Edison. Those would make really cute tees that I’d proudly wear.

uWink Rebooted: Has the Novelty Worn Off?

Mei-Mei and Shelley playing some game

Last night I decided to have a low-key intimate celebration for my fake birthday (my real birthday is next Saturday) at uWink in Hollywood & Highland. I had had such a great time at the new restaurant’s grand opening media party a couple of weeks ago that it seemed perfect for my small party of six. We’d nosh on appetizers, drink cheap and potent cocktails and play drunken trivia. And since I heard reports that the place is usually pretty dead I knew I’d get the non-hectic birthday I desired as well as a guaranteed place to sit. And plus, no reservations needed, even for a group of six.

Unfortunately my experience there was so different from my first time. The staff was still friendly and the games were still fun and I still enjoyed my cocktail (this time I ordered a Maker’s Manhattan which was delicious) but everything else was…well, not great.

I discovered that you actually don’t get game credits for your purchases (i.e. you order a $7 cocktail and get seven credits). Now it’s 25 cents a credit! This was a recent change. But at least the first 60 minutes of game-playing are free. However, I’d recommend getting out of there after those 60 minutes are up because you can easily rack up the credits in a short amount of time. (Each game is worth about two to three credits.)

A swap meet, bikinied girls in gorilla masks and horchata martinis, sounds like it’s going to be an interesting weekend.

2008 Summer Swap-O-Rama-Rama
I’ve never been to a swap meet before but this one in Venice sounds so fun, and it happens to coincide with the Venice Eco-Fest as you do a little recycling of your own. Just bring a bag of your used/unwanted clothes, pay the $5 admission and then go through the piles of free clothes that everyone else brought. You can take home as much as you can carry out. Sounds like a great excuse to do some spring/summer closet cleaning…and to refill your closet again. What’s left over after the swap will go to Out of the Closet. There will also be DIY workshops to teach you how to transform your new used clothing.

  • 11am-5pm. $5 if you bring a bag of clothes, $10 without. Venice Center for Peace with Justice and the Arts, 2210 Lincoln Boulevard, Venice (map).

2nd Annual No Cookie Left Behind Bake Sale
If you have a sweet tooth that can’t be denied, check out this special bake sale (part of Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale) that will feature scrumptious goodies like banana caramel cake, homemade chocolate peanut butter cups and a chocolate Guinness cake, to name just a few. Drool! Everything is created by local caterers, cookbook authors, local bakeries and food bloggers. The kicker is it’ll take place in L.A.’s favorite ice cream shop, Scoops! So if you are still jonesing for sugar, try out one of owner Tai Kim’s amazing and unusual ice cream concoctions. Feel good about every purchase you make as every dollar goes to fighting childhood hunger.

  • 12-4pm. Scoops, 712 N. Heliotrope Drive, Los Angeles (map). (323) 906-2649.

Bronx Zoo at La Cita
I’d say an awesome way to pass a Saturday afternoon is sipping cocktails and sketching bikini-clad girls in gorilla masks. That’s what’s going down at the Bronx Zoo summer party series at La Cita. You heard me, girls in gorilla masks who come out every hour on the hour. I know that’s why I want to go. The only thing that sucks is no cameras or photography are allowed. Boo. But if you’re game for taking this eccentric art class bring your own paper, clipboard, charcoal, pencils, etc. The series will go on each Saturday through September.

  • 2-8pm. $5. La Cita, 336 S. Hill Street, Downtown (map). (213) 687-7111.

Ortega 120 Sunday Afternoon Grand Opening Fiesta
What’s a horchata martini and where and how can you get one, ya ask? Ortega 120, a new Mexican restaurant in Redondo Beach, is celebrating its grand opening this Sunday with cocktails, food and live music. Try out that horchata martini or perhaps the Caipirinha de Fruta or how’s about the Ortega 120 “liquid gold” margarita? Call (323) 792-4120 to be added to the invite list as there is limited space.

  • 3-6pm. Ortega 120, 1814 S. Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach (map).

Bar 107 Yard Sale
Oooh, a yard sale with cocktails. Yes, you can rummage through clothes, knickknacks and even old VHS tapes with one hand and enjoy your $2 Bloody Mary or mimosa with the other! All proceeds go to a school for kids living on Skid Row. Here’s the flier thanks to Thrillist.

  • 10am-2pm. Bar 107, 107 4th Street, Downtown (map). (213) 625-7382.

Keeping Good Cocktail Company: My Fave L.A. Bartenders

Bar Lubitsch

Last night I judged a Martin Miller’s Gin & tonic competition at The Edison (fun!), more on that in a future post, but I ran into Marcos Tello and Michel Dozois, old friends/fave bartenders, after having not seen them since “the incident.” Anyhow they caught me up on what they’re up to and more importantly where I can now visit them if I want a cocktail done right.

Well, I can’t keep everyone’s schedules in my head so thought it best to write them down. While I’m at it, I thought it was the best time to finally share a list of my favorite L.A. bartenders so you, my dear crackheads, can enjoy their company and cocktails, too. Damn, I love these guys. They just know how to make a damn tasty cocktail (sorry for all the swearing) whether with creative mixology or a heavy pour, plus they are such darlings.

Adam Milstein of South: I know what you’re thinking, “How can a Santa Monica sports bar know anything about making a good cocktail?” Well Adam, part-owner of South and a sweetheart to boot, does. And the specialty cocktail menu at this Southern-themed bar is delightful — from the mint julep to the pineapple upside down cake — especially to cool down those long hot summer days. Obviously, Adam is invested in keeping his customers happy and coming back for more and that’s just why I keep coming back to South; the hush puppies and mac and cheese help, too. Plus, did I already mention that Adam’s a sweetheart? I always go during the early hours of the evening, like right after work as I really hate it when it gets crowded.

  • Hours: Thursdays and Fridays 6pm to close.

Chris Ojeda of Osteria Mozza: OK, honestly I just met Chris last night when he was judging the gin and tonic contest alongside me but just watching him and listening to him talk about what goes into a great cocktail, I could tell his cocktail knowledge was vast. Plus, he runs For Medicinal Purposes with my other fave mixologists Damian Windsor (Gordon Ramsay at the London) and Marcos Tello (Comme Ca and The Edison). Sold! Chris’ favorite cocktails to make are the classics but you can also ask him for Osteria’s specialty, Amaro cocktails (these incorporate the Italian digestivo), or for their newest cocktail which combines balsamic vinegar and housemade foam. Fancy.

  • Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday nights til close.

Christine D’Abrosca of Malo: I just blogged about the tasty tequila cocktails at Malo but if you want to have them made from one of the best there, check Christine out. Her favorite drink to make is the Rosita, a little number that’s only on the special menu. This cocktail comes with some pyrotechnics in the form of a flaming orange peel. In the drink you’ll enjoy Gran Centenario Reposado, Aperol, Carpano Antica, dry Vermouth and a couple dashes of orange bitters. Caliente!

  • Hours: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday nights and Saturday afternoons.

Jared Meisler of Bar Lubitsch: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Bar Lubitsch is THE place to go to for some great vodka cocktails. A big deal to me considering I’m first and foremost a whiskey gal. But there, they have none of those frou-frou over-the-top juicy-liqueurs-creams-flavored-vodka concoctions. Just tasty, straightforward and potent goodness. Mmm, Ninotchka — Jared’s other specialties are the cucumber gimlet and the Lubitsch Touch. As owner of BL, Jared obviously knows how to make his special cocktails — how they should taste and how they should be presented. He takes the cocktailing seriously and that’s why I’m more than excited to have my blogiversary party at this hip West Hollywood bar this August 5th. Woo hoo! Can’t wait!

  • Hours: Friday nights til close.

Marcos Tellos of Comme Ca and The Edison: This uber-talented cocktail connoisseur runs cocktail catering company For Medicinal Purposes where he, along with Damian Windsor and Chris Ojeda (Osteria Mozza), reinvents and creates cocktail menus for restaurants and high-profile events. Now he works the cocktail shaker at two really high-end places, one a hip WeHo restaurant and the other a swank downtown hot spot.

  • Hours: Comme Ca on Mondays and Tuesdays 7-10pm and The Edison on Wednesdays and Thursdays til close.

Michel Dozois of Comme Ca: When he’s not running his gourmet ice company La Glace — shotglass ice cubes, rosemary sprigs on ice, etc. — he’s slinging drinks at Comme Ca. Unfortunately Michel and Marcos don’t work the same nights but I guess that just assures you’ll get a good cocktail made regardless what night you go. In any case, Michel suggests that would-be bar diners call ahead the day they intend to go and ask for however many seats at the bar and he’ll reserve them. Usually there are only five bar stools available (five!) but Michel always manages to squeeze one more in. He’s a character, that one.

  • Hours: Wednesday and Saturday nights.

Stephen Smith of The Griffin: I remember the first drink Stephen ever made for me like it was yesterday. Actually it was just this past April but it sealed the deal for making this Atwater bar one of my faves. Stephen is the bar manager here and can pour a mean Manhattan. Mmm. Very charismatic and chatty, he keeps his customers laughing and well taken care of.

  • Hours: Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Steve Taschler of Rush Street: This new Chicago-esque restaurant/bar in Culver City hasn’t opened yet (its public opening is scheduled for July 11) but Steve, my ol’ buddy bartender from Ford’s Filling Station, has confirmed that he will in fact be putting in the hours there. I met Steve at Ford’s and followed him to Kumo. Bartending may not be his first love but he has the creativity and the listening skills to make you just the drink you want to suit your mood. He’s kept me entertained by my simple request to “make me something sweet but not too sweet.”

  • Hours: Wednesday-Saturday nights.

Still waiting to hear back from some of my other faves, but I’ll update this post when I do.

Citizen Smith Mondays: Swank Dining on a Budget

Trio of sliders

You know where you can find me on Monday nights from now on? At Citizen Smith for its Friends and Family Mondays where you can get 50% off ALL food. Yup, my friend Shelley and I went there last night to check it out. It sounded like a deal too good to be true but this time it actually was true…and delicious.

The Hollywood restaurant on a Monday night wasn’t exactly packed but it looked like most of the tables were occupied. We had made a reservation beforehand and were seated across from the bar in a huge booth with a pony skin wall. Suddenly we wished that we had invited more people as it felt silly for us to take up this huge booth. Would have been awfully romantic though had it been a date.

Yamashiro Movie Nights and South Park Sing-A-Long

Some really cool movie events coming up!

Yamashiro, that beautiful Japanese restaurant overlooking Hollywood, is now having free movie nights in its Sky View Lounge through July 23 (thanks to Dig Lounge for the heads-up). That’s all well and good but the best part to me is that they’re screening Breakfast at Tiffany’s on July 2! What an elegant setting to enjoy this fabulous Audrey Hepburn classic. Sip on a Blue Sapphire martini ($12 — vodka, sake, lychee juice and blue curacao) and nosh from the full service menu. Even though there will be two screenings at 6 and 9pm, you may still want to get there lots early to score a good seat.

And on the other end of the classy spectrum, this is probably the best sing-a-long I’ve ever heard of and that includes the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode or the Scarface swear-a-long. OutFest‘s sing-a-long for this year is South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. Genius. Admission is $18 but you can get in for just $12.50 ($9 plus $3.50 service fee) through Goldstar. Dress as your favorite South Park character — Towelie anyone? — and bring your pack of Orbit gum cuz you’ll need it after singing along to potty-mouthed classics like “Uncle Fucka” and the Oscar-nominated “Blame Canada.”

Today’s Stream of Consciousness

OK, not the way I want to start a Monday but I’m soo bummed about George Carlin. It’s not like he was a close personal friend but he made me laugh and cringe and go, “Ooooooh.” And I loved him as Rufus in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. May he rest in peace.

In lighter frivolous news, wanna deal with this heat and get your toes summer pretty? Today and tomorrow you can enjoy a free pina colada at nail salon Bellacures with any service you choose. You may want to pair it with the special June service, the coconut soak mani ($50) and/or pedi ($70), if you want to keep the tropical theme going.

Verdugo Bar is having a “special private” IPA tasting next Sunday, June 29 from 5:30 to 8pm but I don’t know if that means I’m not supposed to tell anyone or if it’s just because there’s limited seating. Well whatev, it’s $20 to participate and pre-payment is required to save your space. RSVP asap to tasting list [at] verdugobar.com or call (323) 257-3408.

The Colony Cafe in West L.A. has extended its hours now so that it’s open at 8am through 8pm Monday through Friday. FINALLY! Now you can actually enjoy a breakfast (Bagel Press sandwich) and a dinner (bacon-wrapped hot dog or BTLA burger) there. And I can now pick up my beloved Tropical Bliss smoothie on my way to work! I know the Web site still says the short hours of 11am to 5pm on weekdays, but I’m going by the huge banner on the restaurant and the signs on its doors.

Google users, FYI, I have a special gadget you can add to your customized Google page. I update it every time I blog something new so you don’t have to wait for the newsletter or Twitter. I think it’s pretty nifty.

Thanks to Thrillist for this heads-up, but there’s this site called RepairPal where you can estimate how much it would take to repair your car. The site also gives you a list of common problem areas for your particular car and a list of repair shops in your hood. No word on if or when they’ll cover Vespa repair shops.

Speaking of Vespas, yesterday I tried to pick up my new Vespa at the dealership. It’s taken me this long because I couldn’t decide if I wanted the LX 150 or if I wanted to pay $800 more for the cute vintage-looking LXV. But regardless, they were completely sold out of LX 150s. Vespas seem to be pretty popular lately in light of the outrageously high gas prices. Anyhow, apparently the 2008s don’t come in the plum color I wanted. So I now have to wait til next week to get the Portofino Green 2008. Next week! Boo.

BTW, I HATE hate hate the DMV, especially the one in Santa Monica. Flames…on the side of my face…burning, heaving….
