How To Spectate the 2008 L.A. Marathon

The 2008 L.A. Marathon is going to be my first one ever so on top of being excited, I’m really really nervous. Run 26.2 miles? Are you kidding me? Eesh! It’ll probably be the meanest thing I’ve ever done to my body so I’m going to need all the encouragement I can get when I’m feeling like giving up at Mile 19. In fact I’m going to go out on a limb and say that all marathoners, especially first-timers, luuuuvs it when people come out and cheer us on from the sidelines. We’ll have our names on our bibs so please shout them out when we run by. There’s something about hearing our names cheered at the top of people’s lungs that is so invigorating.

I’ve already told all my friends what my pace will be so they can guesstimate where I’ll be at various points of the course and hold up “Go Caroline!” signs (and I also signed them up to get text message alerts about my progress). But I forgot to tell them all the crucial stuff that marathon spectators might want to know, like where to park, how to get around, where to meet your marathoner after, etc. so I’ll tell you…and just email them this post later.

It’s going to be crazy driving around L.A. what with all the closures of major streets and about 1 million spectators anticipated to show up. But fortunately the Metro Rail has stations close to the marathon course: Hollywood/Highland and Hollywood/Vine near the beginning of the race, Wilshire/Western, Wilshire/Normandie, Grand, Pico, and the 7th Metro and Pershing Square stops which are five blocks from the Family Reunion Finish Line Festival.

Unfortunately spectators won’t be allowed on the first three miles of the course nor at the finish line itself. But you can meet your marathoner after the race at special lettered meeting spots at the Finish Line Festival on 3rd Street and Flower where you can find them by their last name.

If you go Metro make sure to purchase a $5 all day pass in advance so that you don’t have to wait in crazy-long ticket vendor lines at each station. You can buy these passes from any Metro bus or any rail station. For parking, check the rail station map to see which rail stations have a park/ride.

Have lots of time to kill til your runner comes by? Fortunately there will be entertainment centers located throughout the course where you can find cultural performances, food festivals and, most importantly, port-a-potties. New on the course is the Mariachi Mile on Mile 21 in Boyle Heights where 100 musicians will be on hand to invigorate runners to those last crucial miles. Dance the mariachi and cheer on your friends from the entertainment center there.

Thanks again for coming out to cheer us on. I’m looking forward to the race and to seeing all the smiley faces on the sidelines. If you happen to spot a girl with a bob tucked into a black cap wearing a black running skirt and “Caroline” on her bib, feel free to show her some love!

FREE TICKETS for Grizzly Bear at Disney Hall

When I first saw the headline for this show, I was a bit confused. What’s a Grizzly Bear doing running amok at the Disney Concert Hall and why isn’t anyone concerned? But then I realized that Grizzly Bear is actually the name of an atmospheric quartet from Brooklyn. Cool! The L.A. Phil will actually perform in the first half of the show, playing music hand-picked by GB. And then the quartet will perform its dreamy and melodious full set after. Imagine how beautiful that’ll sound in the hall.

Anyway, thanks to the L.A. Phil I have a pair of tickets for Saturday’s show to give away to the first lucky crackhead to send me their name and contact info to carolineoncrack at gmail.com. The tickets normally retail $24 a piece and are located in the terrace section of the Hall, Row J, seats 153 and 154.

Good luck!

Dessert Tasting at Patina: Spring Preview

Strawberry/Ginger Sorbet

A strange thing happened to me. I was invited to a dessert tasting at Patina to sample renowned Pastry Chef Ian Gresik’s spring preview dessert menu. It’s strange because I’m not a professional food critic, just a blogger with an insatiable, albeit picky, sweet tooth. And yet here I was in fancy-pants Patina downtown in the shadow of the Disney Concert Hall being waited on and served desserts that looked like beautiful works of art. Sweet!

Free Cocktails at Fashion Week Kickoff Party

Photo from Gen Art

Spend a swank evening sipping cocktails alongside models and other beautiful people at the Park Plaza Hotel. I know, this event may be too fancy for me but it’s got free cocktails so hayyy! The 5th anniversary of Los Angeles’ New Garde party will kick off L.A. fashion week by presenting the fall line of new “avant-garde” designers JMary, Jesse Kamm and Les Sang Des Betes.

Apparently there won’t be a runway show per se but rather the models will be displayed showing off the designers’ fashions in separate art installations.

Schedule:

7pm-8pm: Pre-Reception
8pm-10pm: Live Model Presentations
10pm-11pm: After-Party

The cocktails will be courtesy of Sake2Me and Siku Glacier Ice Vodka and tunes will provided by DJ White Shadow and the Schoenecker Brothers.

If you want in on the party, general admission is $50 for non-Gen Art members and $90 for VIP non-members but you can get 20% off your ticket if you enter the code “NG2008″ at the time of purchase, thanks to CozmoCard. Yeah, you do have to pay to get in but at least you don’t have to fork over more bucks for drinks.

EVENT: FRIDAY, MARCH 7 from 7 to 11pm

Dinner at Akasha: I Am Now a Vegan Convert

Salty Chocolate Tart

People who know me know that I am so not a healthy eater. Healthy in terms of reading labels, counting calories and treating my body as a temple. But regardless of the fact that the new green restaurant in Culver City, Akasha, serves organic and vegan fare, I was dying to check it out. I had to, they have a cocktail list. But what started as a casual visit with the intention of sampling some cocktails, maybe an appetizer and maybe a dessert, turned into a full-on dinner.

9th Annual Open That Bottle Night: No Corkage!

No corkage fee!

Shot of Mode (who isn’t participating)

I first heard about this from Pacific Dining Car but I didn’t know there were more restaurants involved in this 9th Annual Open That Bottle Night. Apparently some Wall Street Journal wine writers started this tradition where they encouraged winos to bring out those vintages they were saving for a special occasion and enjoy them at participating restaurants.

The idea is that you would share your story with other vino lovers about why that particular wine is special to you and what occasion you were hoping to save it for. Personally, I’m stingy and can’t understand why anyone would want to share their special wine with strangers but for the more gracious among us, here’s the event for you.

Eater LA convinced over 20 L.A. restaurants to participate in the tradition by waiving their usual $20-$35 corkage fee (some have a 2-bottle limit). So now you can break open that bottle and enjoy it at a pretty swank restaurant. It will definitely make that expensive dinner a tad cheaper not having to purchase wine to go with it.

Make your reservations tout de suite!
