Ha! The Tribune eNewsletter just included "the Cocktails You Eat" article from last week's LAT, might as well link it:

Also, the video podcast I was talking about, tough beans the hostess lives in SF:

LAOCfoodie,

Yes, that's what I mean by sugary, so that it masks the actual alcohol taste, cuz "girls can't handle alcohol." Ha!

LOL, a super sugary/syrupy doesn't even qualify as girly in my book -- more like undrinkable (at least as a cocktail).

For me, girly drinks are the ones where spirits are more background than the dominating flavor (as is the case with many fruit-based cocktails). But of course, that doesn't mean they can't be delish.

Caroline,
Given your comments above, I think you would like the superfresh fruit drinks at the Hungry Cat in Hollywood. I searched but could not find any indication that you've been there (I'm probably missing something). If you haven't been, you should check it out.

LAOCfoodie,

Actually, to me a girly drink is something with lots of syrups and liqueurs and even a liberal use of cream. The Providence cocktails seemed to be more about juices and nectars. What's the difference? The former are way too sugary and rich while the latter are naturally sweet making them subtle and more flavor-enhancing rather than overpowering.

Thanks for the heads-up about the LA Times article and the video podcasts!
